i took bactrim for a UTI and it was a night mare!!! i started taking it on a Wednesday at 1am and took it twice a day i couldn't sleep it made my body ache and i started hallucinating!! and Friday night i got really bad hot flashes and was shaking when i woke up Saturday morning my neck felt swollen so i went back the er!!! i was dehydrate and my uti had got into my blood stream and it took about a week for the hallucinations to stop
Mrclean - I can speak to the nightmares and hallucinations. I was prescribed Bactrim and a Penicillan derivative for an infection on my arm. I finally fell asleep 10-12 hrs after being released from the ER and taking bactrim. I awoke about 20 hours later extremely confused and disoriented. I had dreamed the entire night and I didn't know what was real or not. I called my brother for a reality check and he thought I was going crazy. I was having auditory and visual hallucinations so took some of my alprazolam. This compounded the side effects and I got into a car accident on the fwy and was arrested for DUI. They continued to give me a sulfa (like bactrim) type antibiotic in jail and I continued to have dreams both sleeping and awake (hallucinations). I believed the gaurds were conspiring to charge me with a handful of other crimes and even confronted them about it. In fairness to Bactrim and it's manufacturers these side effects may have been compounded by the fact that I was detoxing off of opiates and alprazolam, which causes dreams and sleeplessness when it is taken away. I concede that these probably had a lot to do with my symptoms but the Bactrim put me over the edge mentally. As for my infection this drug worked extremely well.
