5 years later

Having had this P M R for 5yrs, and tried to come off the prednisolone a number of times, and told on many occasions that the disease will burn itself out.
Is there anyone out there who has managed to break free from PMR.
Failing that is there another alternative to Prednisolone?

Re: 5 years later

I was diagnosed with Temporal Arteritis 8 months ago. I am glad you have not had to deal with temporal arteritis which goes along with some PMR sufferers. Prednisone is really a hard drug on your body. It is the only drug to counteract the effects of temporal arteritis. Blindness can occur suddenly if the blood supply to the optic nerves is compromised. Hope you are better.

Re: 5 years later

I had PMR for 6 years..and yes I am off prednisone. I slowly weaned off it in the last year and a half by reducing dose slowly by .5 milligrams and staying there til the pain was bearable..then down anothe .5 milligram..had many painful days but I also took flaxseed oil and plants sterols and got off permanently 6 years ago.

Now I have bad osteoporosis and gained 30 # while on it. I have lost 25 of the pounds and feel pretty good most of the time. Hang in there..you can get off but it is hard after so many years on it.

I also had Temporal Arithritis in the beginning but that went away after those 60 MG prednisones.....Took almost a year to get below 20 and close to 4 years to get down to 6-8 mgs daily. There is no real alternative to prednisone...increase your Omega 3 intake and see if that helps. I am 78 now and feel better than I did at 68!

Re: 5 years later

Thank you for responding. I am so glad to know that you are doing better and that you are doing wel at age 78. I will increase the Omega 3 capsules, and stay positive about the possiblity of getting off prednisone, or at least reducing to a low dosage. The side effects are so bad. Did you have the problem of your eyes watering and blurred vision while on prednisone. My fatigue level is so bad and, of course, I have the weight gain and the moon face, thinning hair, etc. I am glad that I have had no mental problems on this drug as so many people have experienced. I was encouraged by your note. Shows me that there is hope after all. Thanks

Re: 5 years later

Google "The Road Back Foundation"
I followed the recommended antibiotic protocol and my inflamation is now almost nill. I am on a daily dose of 4mg of the Pred and now function totaly normaly.
Prior to finding this alternative treatment I was on Methotrexate
which is a killer more than a cure.
Get well soon, Kind regards: Gordon
