What is Cerebro-Oculo-Facio-Skeletal Syndrome?

Published:

Cerebro-oculo-facio-skeletal syndrome (COFS) is a pediatric, genetic, degenerative disorder that involves the brain and the spinal cord. It is characterized by craniofacial and skeletal abnormalities, severely reduced muscle tone, and impairment of reflexes. Symptoms may include large, low-set ears, small eyes, microcephaly (abnormal smallness of the head), micrognathia (abnormal smallness of the jaws), clenched fists, wide-set nipples, vision impairments, involuntary eye movements, and mental retardation, which can be moderate or severe. Respiratory infections are frequent. COFS is diagnosed at birth. Ultrasound technology can detect fetuses with COFS at an early stage of pregnancy, as the fetus moves very little, and some of the abnormalities result, in part, from lack of movement.

NOTE: This disorder is not the same as Cohen's syndrome (cerebral obesity ocular skeletal syndrome).

Is there any treatment?
Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Individuals with the disorder often require tube feeding. Because COFS is genetic, genetic counseling is available.

What is the prognosis?
COFS is a fatal disease. Most children do not live beyond five years.

What research is being done?
The NINDS supports research on genetic disorders such as COFS. The goals of this research include finding ways to prevent, treat, and cure these disorders.

I have just read all of these experiences and I'm going through the same thing. I had my doubts thinking that Mirena is to blame but I have had horrible mood swings and cry sometimes for no reason at all. I can't seem to deal with stress and because of this my boyfriend of 2 1/2 years is not currently living with me and our son cause he can't deal with my mood swings. I was never like this before I got the mirena. So, I've decided to make a doctors appointment this coming monday to get it out. This is ruining my relationship.

I was hopitalized last week with pneumonia. During the five days I was in the hospital I was given 80mg of Prednisone daily through my IV. I had no side effects during my stay. When I got home I started taking 40mg daily by mouth and I am now tapering off of it (40mg 3 days, 30mg 3 days, etc) As soon as I got home I started experiencing painful swelling in my knees, ankles, wrists, and shoulders. My knees are the worst. They are always swollen and I am having a hard time walking. I also cannot sleep more than 2 or 3 hours at a time. Has anyone had side effects similar to this? I called my nurse and she acted like I was crazy.

Hello ladies: This is to remind all of you that have experienced terrible side effects from this pill that you are not alone. I urge all of you to do your own research, especially if you have experienced a blood clot or other serious medical issue that would justify adding your name to one of the many lawsuits. I also urge you to visit the "Yasmin Survivors Forum" (if you type it into your search engine it will come up in the results) where you will find women from the US, Canada, and Europe who have experienced the same side effects that you have experienced, and are there to offer advice and support. I hope to see you there, and in the meantime, I wish you the best of luck and improved health. -M.

Crash huh? Wow, I new something was up but not this. I had my Mirena removed at the end of January and had it since April of 2007. Here we are almost the end of March. Had a period 2 days after removal but for only a couple days. First day normal then tapered off. Haven't had another yet. Just waiting. Had some sad/stressful events happen the weeks following removal. Thought the depression and crying were because of the sadness I felt. Now I know there is something else. I have brain fogginess, anger issue, hard time coping with stresses of everyday life ( I have a 3 year old son ), body aches, breast tenderness ( I have taken 2 preggo tests...negative ), Exhausted from the moment I wake to the moment I lay in bed, stomach bloat, hungry all the time, nauseated, cramps/abdominal pain and lack of sex drive ( which is sooo not me). I will give this til the first of April, if nothing changes I will go in to the Dr. I felt wonderful while on Mirena and had no period...well, maybe once a year, light for a few days. I'm suprised I am having this tough of a time and didn't realize the drastic change in my body. I hope this post has helped some of you, I know some of yours have helped me. Thank you
