What is Neuronal Migration Disorders?

Published:

Neuronal migration disorders (NMDs) are a group of birth defects caused by the abnormal migration of neurons in the developing brain and nervous system. In the developing brain, neurons must migrate from the areas where they are born to the areas where they will settle into their proper neural circuits. Neuronal migration, which occurs as early as the second month of gestation, is controlled by a complex assortment of chemical guides and signals. When these signals are absent or incorrect, neurons do not end up where they belong. This can result in structurally abnormal or missing areas of the brain in the cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, brainstem, or hippocampus. The structural abnormalities found in NMDs include schizencephaly, porencephaly, lissencephaly, agyria, macrogyria, pachygyria, microgyria, micropolygyria, neuronal heterotopias (including band heterotopia), agenesis of the corpus callosum, and agenesis of the cranial nerves. Symptoms vary according to the abnormality, but often feature poor muscle tone and motor function, seizures, developmental delays, mental retardation, failure to grow and thrive, difficulties with feeding, swelling in the extremities, and a smaller than normal head. Most infants with an NMD appear normal, but some disorders have characteristic facial or skull features that can be recognized by a neurologist. Several genetic abnormalities in children with NMDs have been identified. Defects in genes that are involved in neuronal migration have been associated with NMDs, but the role they play in the development of these disorders is not yet well-understood. More than 25 syndromes resulting from abnormal neuronal migration have been described. Among them are syndromes with several different patterns of inheritance; genetic counseling thus differs greatly between syndromes.

Is there any treatment?
Treatment is symptomatic, and may include anti-seizure medication and special or supplemental education consisting of physical, occupational, and speech therapies.

What is the prognosis?
The prognosis for children with NMDs varies depending on the specific disorder and the degree of brain abnormality and subsequent neurological losses.

What research is being done?
The NINDS conducts and supports a wide range of studies that explore the complex systems of normal brain development. The knowledge gained from these studies provides the foundation for understanding abnormal development and offers hope for new ways to treat and prevent NMDs.

I had my Mirena inserted in Nov. 2007. I bled off and on for at least 6 months but was willing to wait it out. 2 1/2 years and 20 lbs later, I just had my right ovary removed. I landed in the ER due to horrible abdominal pain on my right side. The pain was constant and intense causing me to vomit repeatedly. It turned out that I had 2 huge cysts on my ovary and the ovary had flipped over on itself. Now I am down to one ovary at the age of 30 and scared of losing the other one. If there is anyone else that has experienced this, please send me a message. I have 3 beautiful boys and am done having children but I want to have this thing removed before I lose another ovary and am sent into early menopause. I'm heavier now than I have ever been in my life. I have constant cravings and a giant appetite. I've had numerous injuries related to simple exercises that I never experienced before having the mirena. I'm constantly tired and uninspired. I just want to get back to myself.

If you actually read the packet that comes with the drug you would know that these are the side effects that are listed there. Stomach irratation is common with all antibiotics. If they are bothersome then you should contact your doctor. Doxycycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic meaning it is not going to target just you infection but all the normal flora as well which puts women at risk for yeast infections. If you take it with a spoon full of yogurt it should help counteract this problem. UNDER NO Circumdances should you stop taking this medication. Antibiotic must be finished. The reason we have super bugs like MRSA or worse VRE which is a bacterial infection that is resistant to the strongest antibiotics known to man is because people do not finish their antibiotics. The bacteria may go dormant after a few days of taking the antibiotics so you are feeling better and you stop taking the pills, but the "bug" isn't gone yet and now that it's been exposed to the antibiotic it's developed an immunity to it and the antibiotic no longer makes a dent in the bug. So if you feel you can no longer stand the side effects from this medication, then call your dr and tell them, most likely they will switch you to a different med. I hope you find this helpful!

I was prescribed 20 MG of Doxycycline Hyclate for 30 days by Chicago's Top Opthamologist for blepharitis by my eye, back in January 2010. He prescribed 2 other med's as well. One an eye drop and another that was taken off the market. Himself nor his office has yet to contact CVS back, 2 months later. Anyway, I had suffered from panic attacks a few years ago and I also have intense GERD. After reading this website, I am SO DARN GLAD, I never took this medicine. It could have really done some massive damage to myself.
