I had my mirena put in on Feb 2007, 6 weeks after I had my son. I had more bleeding then normal for me in the first 6 months, but the doctors said it was normal. So I decided to wait it out. I did have some random symptoms every now and then but nothing major. I had no problems with it after the first year up until about a year ago. About a year ago I started having more and more abdominal and pelvic pain that would radiate down my legs and into my back. Last August I was doubled over in pain and went into the ER but all my tests came back normal and they acted like I was making all of this up. I just recently switched to a new doctor and she was asking questions about my experience with the mirena, I told her about the visit to the ER and she said that it sounds like a cyst. She also said that the Mirena doesn't necessarily cause the cysts, it just doesn't prevent them. So, over the last year I have been dealing with all of these symptoms along with bloating, mood swings (I am emotional and irritable which has gotten worse), migraines (which I have had for years but have gotten so much worse and I am on 2 medications to take the edge off), cramping (especially after sex), more acne then usual during certain times, lower back pain, ringing in the ears, fatigue which doesn't help with the lack of motivation. I have also had to stop during intercourse due to severe pain from the cysts and I have bad cramping after. I also wanted to mention that most of my pelvic pain is on the right ovary which is where I seem to get most of the cysts. So, over the last few months my fiance and I have tried to figure out the best form of birth control. We are having trouble because we only plan on using it for about a year until we are ready to start trying to have children of our own. The biggest problem I have with the pill forms are the fact that my body normally has low doses of hormones, which is why I wasn't having periods for 6-12 months at a time and because of this I get severe mood swings and my body gets thrown all out of whack.. Not to mention the convenience of not having to worry about taking a pill everyday was great because I am horrible with taking my vitamins everyday. We are looking forward to getting the mirena taken out ASAP and getting back to our normal life so we can enjoy it for once. I wish I was able to research this before I had it put in but the problem was that it was too new. I do look forward to giving you any updates as they happen.

Mirena
Everyones right this page is relief. I'm a month and a half into taking doxycycline for malaria prevention, and though the first two weeks were fine, no side effects, anxiety has been building everyday since which is very out of character for me. Today I had a near full blown panic attack, I think anyway as ive never had one before. I'm well traveled also, and have always been fine before. I have no histoy of mental illness or depression, but as point of interest have smoked marijuana regularly at several times in my life. Im wondering if this has had any schizophrenic interaction with the doxy. Anyway, I have experianced these effects getting worse for over a month now. I am going to hold out and take for another week as Ive left a malarious area, if i can make it another week it wont have been for nothing at least. wish me luck!

Doxycycline Hyclate
I'm so sorry to hear that the Mirena isn't working for so many women. It sounds like your physicians are also neglecting to properly inform you of what to expect immediately after insertion. That must make it so scary! I am 31 years old, no children and on my second Mirena insertion (preparing for my third.) My life would NOT be worth living without it. While I never had heavy periods, I had horrible migraines, mood swings that I was prescribed anti-psychotics for and fatigue to the point of not being able to maintain employment. The Mirena changes all of this for me. The first few days after insertion are awful. I tell everyone to plan a week of comfort measures to be safe. Then it takes a few months for the healing process (it is an invasion procedure and requires a healing period) and for the pelvic discomfort to disapate. I do not have periods anymore, I have spotting two to three times a year for maybe an hour. I do have occasional cramps/twinges that are not life-interferring. I do have a slight increase in acne and facial hair. My hair has thinned a bit. I would still have these things over my life without a Mirena. I will also note that having the second one longer than the first (I am on year five), I have noticed that the last two years have been less effective in controlling my menstrual cycle symptoms (migraines, fatigue, mood disorders) and I plan to ask my doctor if there is a certain waning of effectiveness after three years. I notice many women have noted the 2-3 years without symptoms and then the have concerns. This seems less than coincidental to me. All of this to say: of course the Mirena is not going to work for every woman. If you are looking for a birth control method only, then maybe this isn't for you. But for women like me...where nothing else has even touched the benefits I receive from my Mirena, I ask that you be open to seeing that it is still a neccessary product. Thank you and good luck to all of you....

Mirena
I experienced elbow and shoulder pain the next day after first 750 mg dose for a sinus infection. The day I took that dose I went to the driving range and hit a couple buckets of golf balls so I thought the pain the next day was because I somehow over worked myself seemed odd because I was 26 and never felt joint pain in my arms in my life. After a few more daily doses I noticed bad hip pain so I called my doctor and he suggested to take two more days totaling 8 instead of 10 then stop and it should take about a week for the joint pain to go away. Well the pain in my ankles and hips was so severe that I could not stand or sit I had to lay on my side for two days unable to work or move even. The following two weeks were terrible. NO PAIN MEDICINE WORKED OR HAS EVER WORKED. The pain with this medicine will not go away with pain meds so don't bother. After 3 months I was able to function somewhat normal just in pain constantly mainly my heels could not bear weight and it hurt sit and the left elbow and shoulder joints felt like they were on the verge of seperating. The 5th month I was almost back to normal and that carried through into the end of the six month of healing then a lapse back to almost the 1st month level of pain and I noticed when ever I took a anti inflamitory like motrin or aleve or even fish oil the pain in my hips would return so I stopped all meds and did some research on tendons. I found a article about protien and collagen rebuilding in sports injuries. I started taking whey protien you know the stuff body builders drink and glucosamine chondroitin for joint health. Within 2 months I really felt the best I had since June 2nd 2009 the day I took the first dose of Levaquin. This is a long healing process and some days are good and some bad but I am getting better and hold on to hope that after I rid my body of the damage and rebuild my tendons and joints that they will be stronger than ever. Oh yeah the Levaquin did not heal my sinus infection either I discover Organic Apple Cider vinegar curse a sinus infection in 3 days tops. I have not been to a doctor since Levaquin and now have fear of doctors and meds I will try anything natural before I take any more poison from docs. I was 26 and threw the black box warning in the trash saying " I have never been alergic to anything" one of the worst mistakes of my life! Do not take this medicine! Ohand there was also and still is easy fatigue in muscles in forearms like typing this post has caused some pain in wrists but even that goes away after some rest. Hoping this letter helps and anyone affected by Levaquin please don't loose hope it is a very depressing ordeal. I was 26 and did not know what fatigue, joint pain, muscle weakness, missing work, staying indoors instead of playing outside, not being able to golf, ride a bike, run, or enjoy life was like until I took Levaquin but I am finally healing and can once again do the above metioned activities. I wear my steel toe boots at work again (I had to wear sneakers for 3 months the only way I could stand) and after I finish this letter I am off to play golf! Stay in there increase your protien intake (whey protien works for me), take some joint meds and do not take pain meds they do not help with the pain (well at least not for me) so why further labor your body with more meds to filter out. Hope I helped somone and I hope I continue to heal cannot wait to be 110% what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and I am sure you reading this (if you have taking Levaquin) and myself have paid some serious dues so we have got to come back stronger!

Levaquin
I was taking Topomax for about 2 months. I have been experiencing heart palpitations. They are scary and I went to the emergency room. They did an ekg and said everything looked fine. I stopped taking the medicine and the palpitations went away. I started taking the medicine again and I had chest pains and palpitations came back. I am wondering if anyone else has had this or is it my imagination. I do get anxiety do to the medicine where I can't calm down which probably makes everything worse.
