Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride) Tablets and Oral Suspension Paxil CR (paroxetine hydrochloride) Controlled-Release Tablets

Published: Fri May 12 00:00:00 +0000 2006

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and FDA notified healthcare professionals of changes to the Clinical Worsening and Suicide Risk subsection of the WARNINGS section in the prescribing Information for Paxil and Paxil CR. These labeling changes relate to adult patients, particularly those who are younger adults. A recent meta-analysis conducted of suicidal behavior and ideation in placebo-controlled clinical trials of paroxetine in adult patients with psychiatric disorders including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), other depression and non-depression disorders. Results of this analysis showed a higher frequency of suicidal behavior in young adults treated with paroxetine compared with placebo. Further, in the analysis of adults with MDD (all ages), the frequency of suicidal behavior was higher in patients treated with paroxetine compared with placebo. This difference was statistically significant; however, as the absolute number and incidence of events are small, these data should be interpreted with caution. All of the reported events of suicidal behavior in the adult patients with MDD were non-fatal suicide attempts, and the majority of these attempts (8 of 11) were in younger adults aged 18-30. These MDD data suggest that the higher frequency observed in the younger adult population across psychiatric disorders may extend beyond the age of 24. It is important that all patients, especially young adults and those who are improving, receive careful monitoring during paroxetine therapy regardless of the condition being treated.

I was very relieved to find this page, as well as many other forums with so many different women's personal Mirena experiences. I understand that there are women who have used Mirena and have had very positive experiences with it. I recognize that it is a very effective form of birth control for some women. I have enjoyed it as an effective form of birth control in my monogamous relationship. I have enjoyed the fact that it controls my bleeding; I used to have heavy bleeding monthly that sometimes put me out of commission for a day or 2. (extreme clotting, trips to the bathroom every half hour). However, having Mirena has not made my period regular or non-existent. I spot unexpectedly and at random, somedays heavier or lighter than others. It's also common for me to bleed lightly after sex. After insertion I experienced 2 months of intense and painful cramping. (I have a relatively high tolerance for cramping pain, as I have always cramped heavily during my cycle). I was taking up to 12 extra strengh Aleve/Advil/Tylenol in a 24 hour period to deal with the pain. After 4 weeks I returned to the doctor who had inserted it for me, and she did a physical exam to check my strings and see that the IUD was in place. She sent me for an ultrasound as well. The doctor didn’t find anything out of the ordinary, and the ultrasound came back normal. The doctor said that sometimes it takes few months for your body to adjust. I was willing to give it some time, especially since she said my uterus was somewhat “on the small side”. (In addition to the $450 I had spent on the device, and the fact that I cannot take the pill). I waited another 7 weeks, and eventually the extreme cramps subsided. I stopped spotting so regularly and I thought it was starting to work. At the same time, I was gaining weight at a pretty consistent pace and was feeling exceptionally low in terms of mood. I was hesitant (and still am) to blame my mood & weight increase on the Mirena. I have struggled with depression for app. 7 years, and just prior to the IUD insertion I went on an all-inclusive 2 week extravaganza vacation to Jamaica. On the vacation I gained about 6 lbs. My weight has always fluctuated 10 -12 lbs depending on my desire to eat right and exercise. However, I had never gone above 170. And I’m taking anti-depressants. In the months that I’ve had Mirena, I have had some of my worst depressive episodes. (I’ve had it for 9 months). I’m also at 194lbs. (30lbs heavier than a healthy weight for my body type). If not for an incredibly supportive and understanding boyfriend, a great family and circle of friends, I don’t know how much lower I could have sunk. About 4 months after the insertion, I even increased my anti-depressant dose in an attempt to improve my mood. I had my blood work done twice to check my thyroid & iron levels, and everything came back normal. I honestly did not think the Mirena contributed to my weight gain & depression. I started drinking a LOT, almost every night. If I drank, I didn’t have to think. It was a temporary relief…. In addition to a hell of a lot more calories. And after my boyfriend pointed it out; a depressant in itself. Everything feels cyclical. I am depressed because I’m fat so I drink because I’m depressed and then I get fatter because I drink. Finally I saw a different doctor last month, and she told me that Mirena can contribute to weight gain and depression. She sent me for another round of blood tests to be completely sure… and tomorrow morning I’m having it removed. I don’t want to get my hopes up and think that the removal will solve everything. I know that I will still have to deal with my depression, as I always have… but I hope that it will give me the extra push that I need to get out of bed in the mornings. I don’t know what I will do for birth control… I’m pretty much out of options. But hopefully I can get myself back. Thanks everyone for their input. Good luck.

I went on the pill just over a year ago for two months during that time I was 17 i didnt think I would be susceptable to getting thrush! however during this time I began getting it once a month my GP advised me to go off yasmin. BUT 18 months later i am on no oral contraceptive pills and still get thrush every month! I have tried everything from series of oral pills, cream even natural medicine and followed a yeast free sugar free carb free diet!! it is so upsetting and really lowers my self esteem how can a pill like this be on the market!! I can't believe that after this long yasmin is still ruining my life if anyone has a similar story i would love to hear from you I feel like the only one with this bizarre condition no one can seem to find a cure for!!
