Adderall Information

Adderall

Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.

Adderall is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Adderall may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Do not take Adderall if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take Adderall before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, or if you have hardened arteries (arteriosclerosis), heart disease, moderate to severe high blood pressure (hypertension), overactive thyroid, glaucoma, severe anxiety or agitation, or a history of drug or alcohol addiction. Some stimulants have caused sudden death in children and adolescents with serious heart problems or congenital heart defects. Before taking Adderall, tell your doctor if you have any type of heart problems.

I am a soon to be 46 year old female. I was diagnosed about 6 or 7 months ago with ADHD. I became aware of what ADHD actually was when my son who is now 20 was diagnosed when he was about 14. I realized that after being labeled a gifted child since second grade and participating in the gifted program, his grades began to systematically slip. I took him to a psychologist and they said classic ADHD. He couldn't possibly function on that level even though he was intelligent enough. Once reaching high school the organization and focus for a gifted cirriculum were way beyond what he could handle without help. He began medication and had almost no side effects and I saw some improvements. Unfortunately, I had caught this too late and it was hard for him to recover as poor habits were formed. We did manage to get him through high school and a diploma. I had always thought that I had the same issues and now that my daughter is also diagnosed by the school psychologist, I thought I might as well take care of myself too. ADHD is often genetic. I was diagnosed as having severe ADHD. I am taking Amphetamine salts ER 25MG capsules. I'm guessing that is the generic form and my daughter also takes Dextroamp- Amphet ER 30 MG. Her doctor feels ok raising the dosage much more quickly that my doctor does. I'm assuming this is the generic version of Adderol. I have always been the type of person that could drink a gallon of coffee and notice no side effects and could sleep right after drinking it. My effects are the same with what I am taking now (We'll call it Adderol). I take it at about 9 or 9:30 am and by the time 8 o'clock at night rolls around, I definitely feel the effects wearing off and I can get sleepy. There is only one side effect that I ever notice and that is that my mouth gets really dry. Not like I am thirsty but more like cotton mouth. I do find that some sort of hard candy helps, anything that keeps you salivating. Drinking water doesn't help because it is not dehydration, it is dry mouth. Believe me, I would rather live with that than the effects of no medicine. I would also suggest that if you are diagnosed with ADHD later in life that a good knowledgeable counselor is in order. Long term effects of going untreated are astounding. Relationship issues, inpulse behaviors and poor decision impulses are only some of the damage untreated ADHD can cause if not treated at an early age. Relearning how to do many things as many resources are used to compensate for the ADHD taking away those resources that should have been used for other things in life. Taking medication is not only to give you the concentration that you need but it is helpful for so much more. As far as forms of depression while taking meds for ADHD, I'm not sure that just taking Adderol is such a good thing. I have not noticed any crankiness or other issues such as that. The medication is either not the correct fit, or there are other underlying issues that also need to be addressed speratley. As another person on this site said, if you are having side effects that are anything but tolerable, you may have been misdiagnosed. If you truly have ADHD, if you understand what that actually means in a clinical sense, stimulants will help. Don't take it and find an alternative medication. I have also heard that you could develop ticks due to the fact that many people with ADHD also show forms of OCD. Most of us do actually. It does not mean that you will develop them but it is a common symptom. Thankfully, I don't have any!

I started taking generic adderall for ADHD a little over a week ago. For the first week it was wonderful but on the 7th night I started to feel short of breath. I halved my second dose the next day to see if this helped, and it did, until the following day, I again halved my dosage but this time it didn't seem to help with the breathing difficulties. I didn't take it at all today but still feel short of breath. It's kinda freaking me out but I feel that if adderall was causing the breathing issues they should have stopped by now...so I am not sure if my problems are all in my head.

Adderall Chemical Information

dextroamphetamine sulfate - The salt of the dextro-isomer of amphetamine and sympathomimetic amine with CNS stimulating properties. Dextroamphetamine sulphate acts by facilitating the release of catecholamines, particularly noradrenaline and dopamine, from nerve terminals in the brain and inhibits their uptake. This leads to an increase in motor activity, causes euphoria, mental alertness and excitement and suppresses appetite. This drug causes dependence and may cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. It is used in the treatment of narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

amphetamine aspartate - The aspartate salt of amphetamine, a sympathomimetic amine with CNS stimulating properties. Amphetamine acts by facilitating the release of catecholamines, particularly noradrenaline and dopamine, from nerve terminals in the brain and inhibits their uptake. Physiological effects include an increase in motor activity, euphoria, increased mental alertness, excitatory behavior and appetite suppression.

amphetamine sulfate

dextroamphetamine saccharate - The saccharate salt form of the dextro-isomer of amphetamine, a synthetic substance related to natural sympathomimetic amines, with CNS stimulating properties. Dextroamphetamine saccharate acts by facilitating the release of catecholamines, particularly noradrenaline and dopamine, from its storage sites in nerve terminals in the brain, and inhibits their uptake within the mesocorticolimbic system, a major component of the brain reward system, thereby resulting in measurable behavioral changes such as euphoria. As a CNS stimulant, this agent may increase blood pressure and reduce appetite. Similar to other amphetamines, dextroamphetamine has a high potential for abuse, dependence, and addiction if used in large doses over extended periods of time.
