Albuterol works by relaxing muscles in the airways to improve breathing. Albuterol is used to treat bronchospasm (wheezing, shortness of breath) associated with reversible obstructive airway disease such as asthma. Albuterol may also be used for conditions other than those listed in this medication guide. Take albuterol exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. To ensure that you get a correct dose, measure the liquid forms of albuterol with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one. Do not break, crush, or chew the Volmax or Proventil Repetabs tablets. These are specially formulated to release the medication slowly in the body. The Volmax tablets have an outer shell that is not absorbed by the body. Occasionally, this shell may be seen in the stool. This is not a problem as the medication has been absorbed by the body. Seek medical attention if you notice that you require more than your usual or more than the maximum amount of any asthma medication in a 24-hour period. An increased need for medication could be an early sign of a serious asthma attack. Store the Volmax brand of albuterol tablets in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit (2 and 8 degrees Celsius).

Nightmare!! My 18 month old was prescribed albuterol nebulizer treatments by our pediatrician for RSV. My sweet little boy has turned in to a demon!!! He gets this glazed over look in eyes and doesn't stop screaming until he finally gives out and goes asleep. He reminds me of a rabies dog gone mad. He has literally growled at me. Im an RN and I know how important his treatments are but it is not worth it!!! I stopped the treatments two days age and the "fits" are slowing down a little. I only pray they go away for good and I get my sweet baby back! ALBUTEROL WILL NEVER ENTER MY SON'S BODY AGAIN!!!

I have a 2 year old grandson, and he was just diagnosed with having asthma. CHKD children's hospital ER doctor prescribed him Prelone steriod and albuterol 2.5mg for him. His lungs were sounding clearer but later in the day my grandson was really mean and angry. You couldnt even look at him hard and he would scream NO nooooooooooooooo. Crying and not eating. Irritable until I stop the dosage. I new immediately that he was having a reaction to this medicine. My grandson is a sweet and loving child. He couldn't even sleep so I called the doctor and advised them I was stopping it and requested something else.

albuterol - A racemic mixture of the r-isomer levalbuterol and s-albuterol, a short-acting sympathomimetic agent with bronchodilator activity. Albuterol stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors in the lungs, thereby activating the enzyme adenylate cyclase that catalyzes the conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic-3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Increased cAMP concentrations relax bronchial smooth muscle, relieve bronchospasms, and reduce inflammatory cell mediator release, especially from mast cells. Albuterol although to a lesser extent, also stimulates beta1-adrenergic receptors, thereby increasing the force and rate of myocardial contraction.
