Ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel contains a combination of female hormones that prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). This medication also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel are used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. Ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. You will take your first pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period begins (follow your doctor's instructions). You may need to use back-up birth control, such as condoms or a spermicide, when you first start using this medication. Follow your doctor's instructions. Some 28-day birth control packs contain seven "reminder" pills to keep you on your regular cycle. Your period will usually begin while you are using these reminder pills. Breakthrough bleeding may occur, especially during the first 3 months. Tell your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart. When the pills run out, start a new pack the next day. You may get pregnant if you do not use this medication regularly.

I loved alesse when i was on it i has no problems, but then the pharmacy gave me the generic alesse (aviane) and i have had every problem you can think of while on mainly headaches and very, very nausea.

I have been taking the generic form of Alesse for just 5 days and I am ready to stop it. I have been experiencing Severe insomnia. I was up until after 5 a.m. yesterday and it is 3:30 a.m. as I am writing this, and I have to work tomorrow! Also, I've been experiencing mood swings and depression. I even told my doctor that my primary reason for going on the pill was to control my PMS better...this isn't doing the trick. I'd like to think that if I stayed on this a little longer things might get better, but this is not worth it. I have been on birth control in the past and never had problems like this. I don't think it's worth any woman putting herself through these and other symptoms just to take the Pill. Condoms suck, but it's better than putting yourself through emotional hell.

I am 28 and have been on Alesse for almost 3 years and just now realizing my depression, raging hot flashes, crying spells, tiredness, general crabiness and a host of other negative traits may be due to my B/C. I am going to my doctor on Friday to see about changing B/C and also testing for primary ovarian insufficiency as I have never had a regular cycle since I started menstruating when I was 17. I was on Yasmin for a short while before Alesse which gave me severe paranoid episodes so I switched to Alesse. The current changes came on so gradually I didn't notice them. The hot flashes have pushed me over the edge so that finally caught my attention. I hope to find some relief somehow, and some answers.

Alesse Chemical Information

ethinyl estradiol - A semisynthetic estrogen. Ethinyl estradiol binds to the estrogen receptor complex and enters the nucleus, activating DNA transcription of genes involved in estrogenic cellular responses. This agent also inhibits 5-alpha reductase in epididymal tissue, which lowers testosterone levels and may delay progression of prostatic cancer. In addition to its antineoplastic effects, ethinyl estradiol protects against osteoporosis. In animal models, short-term therapy with this agent has been shown to provide long-term protection against breast cancer, mimicking the antitumor effects of pregnancy. (NCI04)

levonorgestrel - The levorotatory form of norgestrel and synthetic progestogen with progestational and androgenic activity. Levonorgestrel binds to the progesterone receptor in the nucleus of target cells, thereby stimulating the resulting hormone-receptor complex, initiating transcription, and increasing the synthesis of certain proteins. This results in a suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) activity and an inhibition of ovulation, as well as an alteration in the cervical mucus and endometrium.
