Atenolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Atenolol is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. Atenolol may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Take atenolol exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Take this medication with a full glass of water. Take atenolol at the same time every day. Do not skip doses or stop taking atenolol without first talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your blood pressure will need to be checked on a regular basis. Do not miss any visits to your doctor. If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon that you are using atenolol. You may need to briefly stop using atenolol before having surgery. Atenolol is only part of a complete program of treatment for hypertension that may also include diet, exercise, and weight control. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely if you are being treated for hypertension. If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel fine.

Have been taking 25mg daily for 3 months for MVP switched from inderal--gained 10 pounds (can't get my heart rate over 92 during high intensity workouts) extreme fatigue, confusion, memory loss, attention deficit, decreased ambition and creativity, high cholesterol, dangerously low BP, nightmares, hair loss and EXTREME muscle pain in feet so intense some mornings I can barely walk. Thought it was plantar fasciitis. I'm 44. I weaned off it to half tab for a week, then stopped completely. I've been reborn! Energy back--foot pain GONE. Vanished. Hate this drug. I'm anninner city HS teacher and there's no way I could teach on this drug. Sapped me.

I have been taking atenolol for about eight years,25mg daily.I was never titrated to find out what was the correct dosage! This used to reglarly done in the seventies to patients going on to this and other simillar drugs. About four months back the parmacist supplied me with 50mg tablets (clearly marked as such on the box and on the tablet), I did not notice the mistake.
However after about a month of dreadful nightmares, falling out of bed etc., I checked the tablets ! The pharmacist was very appologetic..
About two months back I started to have almost continual headaches/dizzyness. I reduced the atenolol by cutting the tablets in half, after ten days I stopped taking atenolol.
I have been carefully graphing my BP and it has risen from an average of 140/80 to 160/88. This for three days with out atenolol.
The headaches ae now minor and respond to paracetamol=tylenol in USA.
I am now taking indapimide 1,25mg daily to see if this will lower the systolic. If one needs an informative book buy: Pathophysiology of Heart Disease by Leonard.S.Lilly
Also on the internet check Vaughn's Summaries very informative.

I have been taking Atenolol for 4 years, however Wal-Mart now only gives me the ones manufactered by MYLAN for the past 9 months. This brand caused me to have nightmares 5 days in a row for the first week. I have very bad nightmares about every other night. It causes me to wake up in a cold fright. Sometimes, I am scared to go to sleep for fear of what I may dream. Sometimes I hear my daughter calling me but she really isn't. I also think I see members of my family around the house but they aren't really there. I looked on-line and found that Atenolol can also casue hallucinations. i am trying to get off the medication.

atenolol - A synthetic isopropylamino-propanol derivative used as an antihypertensive, hypotensive and antiarrhythmic Atenolol acts as a peripheral, cardioselective beta blocker specific for beta1-receptors, without intrinsic sympathomimetic effects. It reduces exercise heart rates and delays atrioventricular conduction, with overall oxygen requirements decreasing. (NCI04)
