Bactrim DS

Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are both antibiotics that treat different types of infection caused by bacteria. The combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim is used to treat ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, traveler's diarrhea, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Measure liquid medicine with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Take this medication for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.

It all began when I had to miss work because of a very big boil on the inside of my thigh. So I decided to go to the doctor to get it lanced. The first time I went to the doctor he didn't lance it but he prescribed me the bactrim for the infection and lortab for the pain. Well that night I took the lortab and bactrim right before going to bed. Three hours later I woke up with an awful headache. It felt like a powerful on and off throbbing sensation but also painful. I rubbed my head until I fell back asleep. Four hours later same thing happened again. So I got up took the lortab and the pain stopped after about twenty minutes. I went back to the doctor and had the boil lanced which hurt like h*ll, and got a antibiotic shot. The doctor suggested that my headaches came from having the boil itself and suggested i continued taking the bactrim. Ive been taking it religiously for two days now and the only side effects i've had are dizziness, nausea, and feeling very sluggish. I take the bactrim witha lortab tablet each time to make sure i dont get anymore of the headaches.

I cannot sleep, my body is tired but my mind is racing, Im paranoid and anxious. Light case if nausea, off and on headaches, just a little depressed not severe though.

Bactrim DS Chemical Information

sulfamethoxazole - A broad-spectrum, short-acting sulfanilamide and a synthetic analog of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) with antibacterial property. Sulfamethoxazole competes with PABA for the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, thereby preventing the incorporation of PABA into dihydrofolic acid, the immediate precursor of folic acid. This leads to an inhibition of bacterial folic acid synthesis and de novo synthesis of purines and pyrimidines, ultimately resulting in cell growth arrest and cell death.

trimethoprim - A synthetic derivative of trimethoxybenzyl-pyrimidine with antibacterial and antiprotozoal properties. As a pyrimidine inhibitor of bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, trimethoprim binds tightly to the bacterial enzyme, blocking the production of tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid. The antibacterial activity of this agent is potentiated by sulfonamides. (NCI04)
