Cephalexin is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. Cephalexin fights bacteria in the body. Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Cephalexin may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Take the medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the instructions on your prescription label. Take cephalexin with a full glass of water. Dissolve the cephalexin dispersible tablet in a small amount of water, about 2 teaspoonfuls. Stir this mixture and drink all of it right away. To make sure you get the entire dose, add a little more water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away. Do not swallow or chew a dispersible tablet. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Take cephalexin for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Cephalexin will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.

I was prescriped a one week cycle of Cephalexin for tonsillitis and swollen lymph nodes. The first side effect was a tingling/burning sensation on the palms of my hands and soles of my feet. Two days later I got a red bumpy rash around my wrists and ankles and I began getting itchy, dry, flaky skin all over my body, especially on my genitals, buttocks, and face. I applied the topical steroidal cream Desonide which relieved the rashiness but the dry flaky skin persisted.
Once the prescription ran out I noticed the skin on the palms of my hands and soles of my feet began cracking, peeling, and exposing a highly sensitive layer of raw underlying skin which continued to flake and peel. I began applying liberal amounts of moisturizing lotion all over my body to relieve skin dryness and began applying large bandages with Neosporin to the painful peeling cracking skin on the soles of my feet. 5 days after ending Cephalexin treatment I began feeling pain in my finger joints and widespread muscle pain primarily in the hips, back, shoulders, neck, and upper arms. Advil coupled with the use of a heating pad relieved this pain to some extent.
9 days after ending Cephalexin treatment I continue to experience joint pain and weakness in hands, widespread muscle pain, and peeling skin on hands and feet. The skin peeling is finally starting to moderate and requires less intense bandaging to the peeling cracking feet, but more concerning to me is the persistent joint and muscle pain. I am a healthy 37 year old male but when I wake up in the morning I move around like an 80 year old arthritic man until I take a few Advil.
Cephalexin cured my tonsillitis and swollen lymph nodes, but the side effects have been a nightmare. I would never take Cephalexin again or recommend it to anyone.

I'm back again.
Please refer to three previous listings for ifititches, I'm now ifititches2.
Firstly I withdraw my apology , I still think Cephalexin Monohydrate is the cause of all my problems.
The first dermatologist got the `scabies` wrong.
The new dermatologist is on the right track, because after 6 months of hell, I'm improving week by week,.
The use of Eleuphrat cream (not ointment) is marvelous, reducing hives and itching but this only treats the complaint not the source of the problem.
Long term use of Eleuphrat causes thinning of the skin and will bruise very easily, cuts take ages to heal. I still use it sparingly.
The answer for me is QUESTRAN LITE, a powder taken in water 3 times a day. It causes constipation but this is a small price to pay for a cure.
I knew after the first 2 weeks of Questran that the new dermatologist was on the right track because the redness and itching of my chest was reducing and continues to reduce.
Why I'm so convinced that Cephalexin Monohydrate is the cause of my poisoning is that I found a note filed just after I stopped taking it , noting that buttocks and back had started itching. The worst was yet to come.
There is a very long list of drugs tried and failed, some with devastating results. Also many creams.
I hope this is of help yo you.

I had an eye infection. I took Cephalexin for two days. Two days later my face broke out into this itchy, red rash. My face then got swollen and felt like sandpaper. It is horrible. It is slowly going away with some steriod cream given to me by a dermatologist. But today i noticed a rash on my neck as well. It is horrible! I wouldn't recommend ANYONE taking this medication!
cephalexin (as monohydrate)
