There have been numerous cases of accidental and intentional overdose with propoxyphene products either alone or in combination with other CNS depressants, including alcohol. Fatalities within the first hour of overdosage are not uncommon. Many of the propoxyphene related deaths have occurred in patients with previous histories of emotional disturbances or suicidal ideation/attempts and/or concomitant administration of sedatives, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, or other CNS-depressant drugs. Do not prescribe propoxyphene for patients who are suicidal or have a history of suicidal ideation.

Darvocet-N contains propoxyphene napsylate and acetaminophen.

Propoxyphene Napsylate, USP is an odorless, white crystalline powder with a bitter taste. It is very slightly soluble in water and soluble in methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and acetone. Chemically, it is (αS,1R)-α-[2-(Dimethylamino)-1-methylethyl]-α phenylphenethyl propionate compound with 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (1:1) monohydrate, which can be represented by the accompanying structural formula. Its molecular weight is 565.72.

I HAVE ALWAYS EXPERIENCED ITCHING WITH CODEINE, SO I SWITCHED TO DARVOCET, NOW I HAVE ITCHING, URINARY RETENTION, AND ANXIOUSNESS WHEN TAKEN.

Actually I have a Question, I was experiencing a bad headache Wed.night, used an ice pack, took 3 tylenol & later Darvocet every 4 hours for pain, I woke up Thurs.morning with my neck all red and burning sensation. I am also on Singulair, Xanax, Calcium and womens Vitamins Please help

Darvocet-N 100 Chemical Information

acetaminophen - An acetanilide with analgesic and antipyretic activity. Although the exact mechanism through which acetaminophen exert its effects has yet to be fully determined, this agent probably acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system (CNS). Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS results in elevation of the pain threshold and lowering of the thermal set point in the hypothalamus.

propoxyphene napsylate - A synthetic diphenyl propionate derivative structurally related to methadone, Propoxyphene Napsylate acts as a central narcotic and analgesic agent by interaction with mu opioid receptors, but with less selectivity then morphine. The dextro-isomer has analgesic effect, while the levo-isomer exerts an antitussive effect. The napsylate salt allows better dosage formulation than the hydrochloride salt. (NCI04)
