Ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel contains a combination of female hormones that prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). This medication also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel are used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. Ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. You will take your first pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period begins (follow your doctor's instructions). You may need to use back-up birth control, such as condoms or a spermicide, when you first start using this medication. Follow your doctor's instructions. The 28-day birth control pack contains seven "reminder" pills to keep you on your regular cycle. Your period will usually begin while you are using these reminder pills. You may have breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first 3 months. Tell your doctor if this bleeding continues or is very heavy. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart

Has anyone else experienced VERY frequent urination? I was on Desogen from about February until I stopped a month ago. The urination was getting very bad all day and started slowly in May, but progressively got worse until it was unbearable from about August until I stopped taking it. It was only during the day that this was an issue.
I have now been off of it about 3 weeks, and I am still experiencing the same symptoms. How long will it be before the pill is out of my system and I can see if that is what is causing the issues? HELP!

I have been on apri for about two years now. I am 21 working college student and was happy with apri for the first year of taking it but in the past 6 months to the past year some side affects have became a problem. I am constantly overly tired and lazy with a complete lack of motivation. I have also had a serious hair loss problem to the point where my mom noticed overly thin hair all of the sudden. I am over all happy with apri but I miss having my normal daily energy. Apri has helped my periods-shorter and lighter with little cramping and my sex drive is fine. Mood swings have increased where I also get irritated way more dramatically over little/nothing things. I am thinking about going off of BC completely for two months to see how it will change me to see if its worth the hair loss, mood swings and complete lack of energy.

I have been on Apri for 3 years and I am suffering from EXTREME MIGRAINES and DEPRESSION. I came off of the drug for a month and was fine just heavier cycles, but was urged by my doctor to get back on and take for 3 months w/o having a cycle (skip the white pills). I am sick again, can barely function. After I finishing this package I have made a vow to myself to never take Apri.

desogestrel - A synthetic progestogen with progesterone hormone receptor agonistic activity. Desogestrel binds intracellular progesterone receptors in progesterone responsive tissue and the resultant complex interacts with DNA and results in either gene transcription or gene repression. This leads to an inhibition of LH release and prevents ovulation and alters the cervical mucus. Desogestrel is used in birth control pills alone or in combination with estrogens.
ethinyl estradiol - A semisynthetic estrogen. Ethinyl estradiol binds to the estrogen receptor complex and enters the nucleus, activating DNA transcription of genes involved in estrogenic cellular responses. This agent also inhibits 5-alpha reductase in epididymal tissue, which lowers testosterone levels and may delay progression of prostatic cancer. In addition to its antineoplastic effects, ethinyl estradiol protects against osteoporosis. In animal models, short-term therapy with this agent has been shown to provide long-term protection against breast cancer, mimicking the antitumor effects of pregnancy. (NCI04)
