Lantus Information

Lantus

Insulin glargine is a man-made form of a hormone that is produced in the body. It works by lowering levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin glargine is a long-acting form of insulin that is slightly different from other forms of insulin that are not man-made. Insulin glargine is used to treat type 1 (insulin-dependent) or type 2 (non insulin-dependent) diabetes. Insulin glargine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. You should not mix this medication with other insulins. Insulin glargine is given as an injection (shot) under your skin. Your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist will give you specific instructions on how and where to inject this medicine. Do not self-inject this medicine if you do not fully understand how to give the injection and properly dispose of used needles and syringes. Insulin glargine should be thin, clear, and colorless. Do not use the medication if it has changed colors or has any particles in it. Call your doctor for a new prescription. Choose a different place in your injection skin area each time you use this medication. Do not inject into the same place two times in a row. Use each disposable needle only one time. Throw away used needles in a puncture-proof container

I took lantus 3 years ago. I started to have problems where I thought I was having lows, but my blood sugars would be in the 200s. I had fast heartbeat, I had aches in the morning in my stomach almost like flu aches. I had frequent thirst and urination. I would pea a lot, but at night I was thirsty and would drink tons of water and pea. I even had an eye problem for a while, and I had painful sensation in my feet. My doctor says that it's neuropathy, but I've never had that in my feet like that. Sometimes I would get tingling in my feet, but this painful sensation has to be the lantus. I ended up in the hospital. They were claiming I had ketoacidosis. They were making it seem like I did that too myself. I don't skip shots. It had to be the lantus. I'm just glad I'm still alive. I don't take lantus anymore.

I’ve been on Lantus and Novolog since Dec. 2008. Since that time I have experienced the following symptoms whenever I take either if these insulins: dizziness, nausea, tightening sensation in my throat, and burning/stinging sensation in my legs, feet, and back. I also have general weakness, digestion problems, and eosinophilia, which my hematologist believes are caused by an allergic reaction—most likely to GMO (synthetic) insulins. I have type 1 diabetes, so I am going to have to import some animal insulin from Great Britain. It will be expensive and involve some paperwork, but animal insulins for human use, of course, are no longer sold in the USA.

Have been put on to Lantus in October and have put on 14lbs in weight and have terrible pain in my legs and feet. Have just related this to the time I was put on Lantus, will put on appointment to see doctor and discuss this, I feel like just stopping this and see what happens.
