Taking for four days, with the hopes of clearing an abcess in my jaw that arose from tooth cavity. Ive experimented with a lot of medications, this has the worse side effects ive ever experienced. The loss of fine motor coordination and prolonged episodes of numbness and hypersensitivity far outweigh the advantages of the drug anti-biotic activity. I can confirm that i too have read that in most cases Metronidazole causes persistant (but NOT permanent) 'peripheral neuropathy' and that this can be quite a discomfort. However im yet to come across a site that mentions the onset of permanent periphral neuropathy which is reassuring. Metronidazol is a nitroimidazole anti-biotic and is absorbed by anaerobes where in its reduced form disrupt the bacteria's ferredoxin-pyruvate cycle, preventing it from respirating. Sounds effective? however nitroimidazole compounds also interfere with acetylcholine release in presynaptic neurons, this reduces gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA- a neuroinhibitor) thresholds leading to CNS toxicity. This is clearly some bad shit.
Other effects that i have experienced is a loss of self identity, confusion and a sense of impending doom, when this occurs i find the best thing to do is drink water and have a warm shower since this has the effect of stimulating the brain and aiding the release of calming hormones.
I can agree with others here, coffee and/or nicotine is not an option. When drank coffee two days in to my antibiotic regieme the nausea/itching and CNS irritability/hypersensitivity seemed to intensify. Urination has increased by three-fold and is dark in colour. Other effects are intense nightmares and inability to sleep, ringing in my ears, blurred vision and a feeling of pressure in the head although these are not prologed effects and arise only occasionally through the day.
I bit of advice to anyone if your taking these pills and experiencing side effects is to stop because you clearly have sensitivity issues with the substance. Remember that synthetic antibiotics are poisonous and we're essentially poisoning ourselves to rid the infection. If you need a replacement i suggest you inform yourself with the use of GARLIC. Ive substituted my administration of metronidazole for medicinal doses of garlic combined with two litres of water over the space of an hour, with ginger tea to relax and help purge the effects of the Met. So far im feeling good, the nasty effects of the met have almost subsided and i have almost full sensitivity back in my right arm. The importance of a strong Natural anti-biotic is imperiative since the infection (tooth abcess) could come back two-fold and spread to the brain (very bad news). Garlic is amazing, apart from reducing cholrsterol and blood pressure, it also functions as an antiseptic, antibiotic, assiting the immune system by simulating the release of T-cell flaglocytes and mageocytes (immune defense cells). just eat three cloves of garlic a day, mix it in food or just eat it like it is. Just make sure to drink at least three litres of water through the day because it helps deliver aillcin (garlic active ingedient) around the body and aids hydration. Remeber that garlic thinns the blood though (like asprin) and if Metronidazole is causing bloody stools or bleeding anywhere else, consult your doctor first. To help the floppy feeling salt water and bananas (potassium) are a must, salts are important to repair the impaired CNS (caused by Met). Beetroot is helping my circulation return to normal and help me feel more myself again i bought a jar earlier but im going to get the raw stuff later too.
If you get scared when taking this stuff try not to panic, what you feel is quite normal, the guys that developed this at Pfizer knew all about it. The uncomforable effects will go away when you stop taking it, but remeber if you decide to stop half way through the regieme, consult the doctor for a replacement, since the infection may come back and if it does it will be stronger than ever.
Diet is everything.
Good luck
Good luck and stay away from this toxic-ness its just not necessary

I've taken Metronidazole three times/day for two weeks for a foot infection. The metallic taste and nausea appeared after 7 days. Now it's horrible... every single meal that I've had since I've been taking the pills now gives me nausea, so I can't eat. Today I had a cup of coffee and it has been the most horrible experience (nausea, vomit, headache). I've felt really tired, I can't work, because of the nausea and fatigue. I'm done... will not continue taking my pills any more! DO NOT DRINK COFFEE IF YOU'RE ON METRONIDAZOLE!

I was prescribed Metronidazole for associated antibiotic diarrhea. For the first 5 days I had no side effect. On day 6 I started to feel fatigue and this symptom would seem to come in waves. It seems to increase this symptom as the days progressed. Now Im on Day 8 and feeling just completely out of it. Like i haven't slept or sort of a drunk feeling. I have to say that I have never experienced any side effects from prescription medication before so this is the first. I can't wait to get done with this. I just want to be back to my same self.

metronidazole - A synthetic nitroimidazole derivative with antiprotozoal and antibacterial activities. Although its mechanism of action is not fully elucidated, un-ionized metronidazole is readily taken up by obligate anaerobic organisms and is subsequently reduced by low-redox potential electron-transport proteins to an active, intermediate product. Reduced metronidazole causes DNA strand breaks, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis and bacterial cell growth.
