Remicade

Infliximab reduces the effects of a substance in the body that can cause inflammation. Infliximab is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and ankylosing spondylitis. Infliximab is also used to treat severe or disabling plaque psoriasis (raised, silvery flaking of the skin). Infliximab is often used when other medicines have not been effective. Infliximab may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Before you start treatment with infliximab, your doctor may perform tests to make sure you do not have tuberculosis or other infections. Infliximab is given as an injection through a needle placed into a vein. Your doctor, nurse, or other healthcare provider will give you this injection. This medicine is usually given at intervals of 2 to 8 weeks. Infliximab must be injected slowly, over about 2 hours. Your doctor may wish to observe you after the injection to make sure the medicine has not caused any serious side effects. You may be given instructions on how to use your injections at home. Do not use this medicine at home if you do not fully understand how to give the injection and properly dispose of needles and other items used in giving the medicine. Infliximab can lower the blood cells that help your body fight infections. This can make it easier for you to bleed from an injury or get sick from being around others who are ill.

I am a 47yr old female with uc. At present, 50cm of my large intestine is affected. I've been on numerous meds and have always refused prednisone. 4 days ago, I have to give in as I am very ill, so the Dr. has put me on 30mg prednisone daily and is trying to seek approval for Remicade. At first, I was excited, but now from reading the list of possible side effects, I am really scared. The most severe symptoms at present at bloody d, stabbing abdominal pain and general feeling of hopelessness. I've was in Emerg on Tues. and I do not have a perferated bowel, but the Dr. says that if things don't get better, I'm going to have to have surgery. Can anyone give me any words of wisdom? Thanks, SM in Canada

I have been on remicade since october 2007, my ulcerative colitis is under control, but just the past 4-5 months I get pain in my joints, that migrate from one side to the other side. The pain usually occurs 1 week before my infusion. I also have experienced yeast infections, constantly, sores in my mouth and a swollen tongue which usually happen a week before my infusion. The day I get my infusion, I am tired, but the next 4 weeks are fine. I am concerned about still being on the remicade but don't want to live my life, wondering if I will make it to the bathroom or not. I am concerned about all the strange things that are happening to my body, but really don't want to live running to the bathroom. I have also had some dental problems, fillings just falling out and severe grinding in the night. Does anyone have any of these strange side effects happening to them?
