Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are both antibiotics that treat different types of infection caused by bacteria.
The combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim is used to treat ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, traveler's diarrhea, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
You should not use this medication if you are allergic to sulfamethoxazole or trimethoprim, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you have anemia (lack of red blood cells) caused by folic acid deficiency.
Before using sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, a folic acid deficiency, asthma or severe allergies, AIDS, a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD deficiency), or if you are malnourished.

I took SMZ/TMP DS for a really bad sinus infection. I started getting really bad headaches and just thought it was due to the infection. Next couple of days I started to feel real weak and always sick to my stomach.Six days later I woke up with a really red face, almost looked like a had sunburn. I just let it go until I woke up the next day with a rash on my chest along and my face and ears. It then moved to my stomach ,arms, legs and back...lets just say everywhere. I had to get a steroid shot and medication. NEVER WILL I TAKE THIS AGAIN!!!

Thank goodness I have not had to suffer as many have. My side effect is terrible, lucid dreams. And I mean bad, sick, dreams
This drug needs more study or an alternative for general infections. I was told it was for a staph infection.
Has anyone tried to be a good citizen and try and report to government.
Don't bother, you have to jump through so many hoops.Good luck all.

Started taking this med about 3 days ago and bamm....appetite gone. And I mean gone. I don't even think of food (previously an every hour of the day hobby) Never experienced anything like this lack of hunger in all my days.
STRANGE. SCARY. AFRAID TO WEIGH MYSELF.
Nausea and some body aches but to date thankfully no rash monsters have visited.
Will stop taking today to hopefully prevent worsening and fully inform my doc and the phamacy.
sulfamethoxazole - A broad-spectrum, short-acting sulfanilamide and a synthetic analog of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) with antibacterial property. Sulfamethoxazole competes with PABA for the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, thereby preventing the incorporation of PABA into dihydrofolic acid, the immediate precursor of folic acid. This leads to an inhibition of bacterial folic acid synthesis and de novo synthesis of purines and pyrimidines, ultimately resulting in cell growth arrest and cell death.
trimethoprim - A synthetic derivative of trimethoxybenzyl-pyrimidine with antibacterial and antiprotozoal properties. As a pyrimidine inhibitor of bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, trimethoprim binds tightly to the bacterial enzyme, blocking the production of tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid. The antibacterial activity of this agent is potentiated by sulfonamides. (NCI04)
