Synthroid Information

Synthroid

Levothyroxine is a replacement for a hormone that is normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own. Levothyroxine treats hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Levothyroxine is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), which can be caused by hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer. Levothyroxine should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems. Levothyroxine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Take levothyroxine exactly as your doctor has prescribed it for you. Do not use more of the medication than recommended. Do not take levothyroxine for longer than your doctor has prescribed. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication. It is very important to take levothyroxine with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. The levothyroxine tablet can dissolve very quickly and swell in the throat, possibly causing choking or gagging. Take this medicine on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before eating. Levothyroxine is usually taken in the morning. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions and try to take this medication at the same time each day. It may take several weeks before your body starts to respond to this medication.

OMG!! Now I know I'm not going crazy! I'm 53 years old and have been on Armour Thyroid for about 4-5 years and was doing great. Just recently, it has become impossible to acquire it and for the second time, my doctor has put me on Synthroid. I begged for something different. I've been on Synthroid for 2-3 weeks. I thought I was having a nervous breakdown, went to see my therapist who thought I may be suffering from depression and said perhaps I need an anti-depressant. I said "no, I don't want more medicine. I feel like I've taken a mega dose of benadryl. I'm jittery and lethargic at the same time. I have unbelievable fatique. I feel like I'm depressed. I can't concentrate on anything. Brain fog is making it nearly impossible to do my job. I can't believe no one is listening to us. I'm not going to take Synthorid anymore. I'm going to try a compounded formula that has both T3 and T4. Please wish me luck. I want my life back. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

I am very glad I've seen this site. I was not on synthroid long, but I can tell you I felt horrilbe from it. I started the medication in August 2009, and quit taking it in October 2009. I ached all over, I had a hard time getting up from a sitting position, headaches, very fatigued, stomach problems, constipation. I stopped taking the medication and felt much better. I called my Doctor in December to ask what I should do and he said start them again and see what happens. He said the dose is so low he dosen't understand why I have problems. Well I took it for 4 days and suffered all over again. I quit again. I just started again and after the sixth day I got so sick I was trembling badly. I also felt very nauseated. I quit taking them again. I made an appointment with another doctor. But I will not take that medication anymore. My stomach still bothers me but not as much as it did when I was on the medication. I believe it will get better now that I am not taking the medication.
