Ultracet

Ultracet is a combination of two drugs, tramadol (Ultram) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) that is used to relieve moderate, acute pain such as pain following dental or surgical procedures. Tramadol and acetaminophen each relieve pain, but they do so by different mechanisms. Tramadol achieves pain relief in two ways. It binds to the µ-opioid receptor on nerves (the same mechanism that is responsible for the effectives of narcotics, such as morphine), and it also inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine by nerves. This inhibition may lead to reduced transmission of pain signals through the spinal cord to the brain. Acetaminophen achieves pain relief in the spinal cord and brain by increasing the threshold to pain, that is, by increasing the strength of the painful stimulus that is necessary in order to give rise to the sensation of pain. It does this by inhibiting an enzyme that makes prostaglandins.

I was taking Ultracet for about 3 months for arthritis in my shoulder--usually 2 to 4 pills a day. The pills gave me a pleasant feeling and did help with the pain, but they definitely can become addicting. Be careful if you ever want to stop taking them--withdrawal effects are not pleasant! I had a delay in getting a prescription refilled which resulted in my stopping the pills abruptly for about 3 days. On the second day, I had flu-like chills, sweating, restless leg syndrome at night (the worst!) and a general feeling of uneasiness. That was enough for me--bye bye Ultracet.

Hi it's Aracnasexxxphobia, I took 2 ultra set for a spider bite in my lower groin. I was very woosy and called all girls i knew, before i came to my senses. I later woke up on my couch with a large digital cable bill. My name is A. B. and suffer from alcohol and live near the woods. I would not suggest taking ultracet after spider bites. These library computers are awesome.

I just got a root canal because my tooth is "dying" and it was causing severe pain throughout the whole right side of my face, head, and ear. I asked the Ortho not to give me Percocet or Vicodin because I get nauseous / puke profusely. I took an Ultracet and luckily I only felt a twinge of nausea... just on the brink of nauseous but I could live with it. It also made me feel really dopey and high. I liked the feeling because I had been days of severe pain and finally it was gone after the numbing from the dentist and the Ultracet... However, when I took one just before bed (4 hrs after 1st dose) I did get nauseous. I also felt twitchy and restless. My mom takes Ultram religiously for her headaches, and takes two at a time... I don't know how she does it. She is dependent on them. I went to work today and took one because my face started pulsing again. It was interesting because I didn't get nauseous and I felt more productive. I did get dopey for about 45 minutes but it went away and the pain stayed gone well after that. So in my short experience with this drug, I've noticed the side effects aren't as bad during the day (maybe because I'm moving around more and not concentrating on them). I've also noticed that if taken during the day I got a little bit of an energy burst after the 45 minute dopey phase passed. Now it's night time again and my face hurts again, so instead of taking a full pill, I broke it in half (Verified with pharmacist that it's okay), and took an 800mg ibuprofen. Hopefully, I won't get sick and I'll sleep through the night without a pounding face alarm clock.

Ultracet Chemical Information

acetaminophen - An acetanilide with analgesic and antipyretic activity. Although the exact mechanism through which acetaminophen exert its effects has yet to be fully determined, this agent probably acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system (CNS). Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS results in elevation of the pain threshold and lowering of the thermal set point in the hypothalamus.

tramadol hydrochloride - A synthetic codeine analogue, Tramadol Hydrochloride has central analgesic properties with effects similar to opioids, such as morphine and codeine, acting on specific opioid receptors. The hydrochloride salt of Tramadol and used as a narcotic analgesic for severe pain, it can be addictive and weakly inhibits norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake. (NCI04)
