Alprazolam is in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peens). Alprazolam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety. Alprazolam is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression. Alprazolam may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication. Alprazolam may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Alprazolam should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. Measure the liquid form of alprazolam with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

ive been taking for 2 years im lightheaded all the time dry mouth and im more nervous and anxious when i take it. at first it was helping me.Now it just makes things worse and trying to stop it is hard.I'm trying to dose off of it now i was taking half of 1 mg a day then 1 mg a day now im trying to half the half and im just getting worse i wouldn't recommend taking alprazolam(zanax)yes it calms you down for a little bit bit in the long run its no good.Oh yeah have bad dreams on it(a side effect) and also wake up with racing feeling at night maybe 5 times a night.

Hi everyone, I cannot live without xanax and its terrible, I have been on them for 5 months and have tried to stop them and its a nightmare. I suffer memory loss, have blackouts that I do not remember what I have said after a few drinks. It does help ease the social anxiety. But I have become moody, sleepy. . Does anyone else have these problems?

Xanax was the best thing that ever happened to me. It changed my life I feel normal again form suffering w/GAD and phobias. The side effects are minor and will subside if you are taking a reasonable dosage. I take 5mg only when i feel like i will have a panic attack. Its worth a try!

Xanax Chemical Information

alprazolam - A triazolobenzodiazepine agent with anxiolytic, sedative-hypnotic and anticonvulsant activities. Alprazolam binds to a specific site distinct from the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) binding site on the benzodiazepine-GABA-A-chloride ionophore receptor complex located in the limbic, thalamic and hypothalamic regions of the central nervous system (CNS). This binding causes an allosteric modification of the receptor and enhances the affinity of GABA to the receptor leading to an increase in the frequency of chloride-channel opening events. This leads to an increase in chloride ion conductance, neuronal hyperpolarization, inhibition of the action potential and leads to a decrease in neuronal excitability.
