I'm 46 living with GERD and Hiatal Hernia diagnosed 5years ago. Since then I've been taking Zantac 300mg daily. It does help me avoid acid-reflux and stomach cramp. However, I've been suffering from sleeplessness (only 4-5hrs average) and more importantly memory loss. I also developed issue with eyes - my eyesight degraded and exam revealed that there is a possibility of glaucoma. My eye problem could be due to aging and my sleep problem could be due to stress, but memory loss is quite significant - none of my siblings (they are 6--8yrs older) have any memory issue. It's impacting my work life since I cannot easily recall things and my coworkers notice it. I searched Internet for memory loss problem and found the following alert from John Hopkins http://www.johnshopkinshealthalerts.com/alerts/memory/JohnsHopkinsMemoryHealthAlert_205-1.html it says medications causing memory loss include heartburn drugs such as Tagamet (cimetidine), Pepcid (famotidine), and Zantac (ranitidine). Voila! Good news is that it says the problem is reversible. I'm stopping Zantac right away and hoping to get back to normal memory in near future.

Have been taking zantac 300 for about two weeks. At the beginning, took it in the mornings but fatigue was so extreme that I had to switch to taking it at night. Started waking with extreme breathlessness and stomach cramps, which I didn't tie in with the tablets. Two weeks later, stomach cramps (stomach and centre abdomen) are getting increasingly worse. I've also had increased anxiety, a trapped gas feeling in entire abdomen, I burp constantly but the burps don't relieve me and I feel breathless and very panicky with them and I also feel that I am full up to my eyeballs, even after the smallest amount of food. I've lost my appetite even more (something I didn't think was possible considering how little I was eating). My joints and muscles ache. But the reason I'm going to stop taking this tonight is the unbearable stomach pain, I'm hoping the Zantac is the reason for this ... the ulcer pain that I had prior to starting Zantac was more bearable, I think I'll stick to antacids.

i have had problems with acid reflux for approx 5 years now and have tried everything pretty much. i first went for tests and they did the one where you swallow the liquid metal stuff (barium?) and then a endoscopy. my regular doctor said i had a slight hiatal hernia after the barium test and after the endoscopy my stomach dr said i had acid reflux and didn't have a hernia so he started me off with nexium which worked good for a while but i began to have side effects . i would just feel not right mentally cloudy all day, extremely dizzy.after that it seemed like every drug he put me on (prilosec, aciphex, prevacid) seemed to have the same results. so i decided to see if i stopped completely if these feelings would go away and sure enough they did but the acid was soon to follow. i started taking zantac 150's and they worked but now i feel like i cant sleep at night and sure enough thats one of the side effects. i also read not to drink alcohol when using these drugs. so now i pretty much sit here not knowing what move to make next
