My 14 year old daughter was prescribed Advair 1 week ago. She had been on prednisone and Abuterol for 5 days and was still experiencing wheezing. Today I got a call from the school that she was very agitated. When I got there her eyes were darting everywhere and she was crying. She said that first she felt angry, then couldn't keep still and felt paranoid. When the nurse tried to reassure her before I arrived, my daughter didn't want anyone near her. She settled a little when we got home and now has been buried under her covers for 2 hours.
She will NEVER use Advair again. And I will make sure my friends know what severe side effects this drug has.

My son (9) was on advair off and on for a while for severe asthma. I noticed depression, anxiety, fatigue and fibromyalgia type pains all over his body. I had him checked for lupus and other diseases and all negative. He also developed a severe rash between his legs causing much pain and discomfort as he had to walk like a bull-legged horse-riding cowboy. Showering often never helped. I assume he has candidis yeast infection(systemic). He was finally put on Prozac and I took him off Advair against my doctors advice. i took him off slowly and your body may need to make it's own steriods and not go into shock. He takes as much albuterol as needed to get him better and then i give him prednisone for 3 days when things become an emergency. tTe prednisone leads my son to anger and suicide but it goes away after he finishes his course, but it saves his life. He is now 13 and much happier and his face and body has thinned out by half. I will never give my son Advair again.

Previously posted 8 year old son w/ suicidal ideation and depression...I'm seeing comments about "inattentive." I've been saying my son is ADD for years....How many of you saw this possible side effect? Off of Singulair for 14 days now....behavior unbelievably improved.

After reading more posts and comments to others re: SINGULAIR and discussion of side effects of steroids - I am really scared as you could all imagine! Do I need to look for any side effects from the flovent and albuterol? What should Iook for? I am so not the paranoid type but am quickly becoming more now b/c I don't want my son to suffer anymore. I know predisone long term but what about the flovent which is a steroid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi All! So glad to read of all the "happiness" since off of singulair. My 2 sons and I are off for a week now and what a difference. My 6 year old is back to his old self. He is much happier and is laughing a lot and not throwing angry tantrums. My 8 year old feels much better as well. He is much calmer and has had only one outburst in a week compared to daily. I can't wait to see if he can come off of ADHD meds too. I feel much more laid back. I thought my mood swings were hormonal but since I have had a hysterectomy, I thought they should subside. My estrogen level seems good but I just thought I was being female! I can tell a difference now and I feel better. I am getting along with just my asmanex for now. I wonder if the singulair really even helped me at all. I had a little tightness the first few days but now I feel just like I did on the singulair. To me this med is just not worth the risk. We have no family history of ADHD or depression so I wondered why my boys had the thoughts and symptoms they did. Singulair was the only drug my youngest was on so I know his symptoms came from that. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the posts!

I get bronchitis when I use this product. I have had to resort to illegal methods of getting the older inhalers. I can't afford to be down sick for 2 weeks at a time because a government decides for me that my medicine is bad. I'm sorry, me breathing is more important then ANYONE elses opinion. Especially those without asthma who say HFA is exactly the same. It's not. I haven't been able to tell a diffrence between it and primitine mist. Both INFERIOR products.

My daughter was born with a breathing condition(never pinpointed) that kept her in intensive care for almost 2 weeks. As she grew she seemed ok. Then pneumonia appeared at 1 1/2yrs. and she has been hospitalized 5 times since with various forms of pneumonia(walking, single, double) since. We moved from the city to the 'burbs and all seemed well. She would take the occasional Xopenex(Abuterol made her nuts). To make a long story short, after 2 years in the new house new symptoms appeared. All of a sudden there was coughing at night that would not stop. We went to a new Dr. and he prescribed Singulair. This was October of '06. Soon thereafter, the behavior began to get worse. Tantrums and extreme moodiness began to become more frequent and her school work began to suffer. We've just been informed that the school is recommending holding her back. When I talked to the teacher, she indicated that my daughter has gotten "worse" since Christmas. Teacher also does not believe that there are any learning disabilities. I know that it is the Singulair. She has the constant stomach ache and no appetite to speak of. All of the professionals are assurring me that Singulair is safe. She is not on this nasty drug any longer... Waiting for changes...

I have had severe chronic asthma for over 20 years. Started Advair 500/50 4 years ago and my asthma is completely under control--almost never need to use my abuterol. But I have gained 50lbs, and I exercise 5x a week and eat a 1200 calorie diet, and I still gain 1-2 pounds a month. I have several cushing's like symptoms. Excessive weight gain in abdomen and breasts while my arms/legs are thin. Hair loss. Severe stretch marks on abdomen and thighs. Blurry vision, headaches, severe cramping in my calves and strange rash-like bumps on the backs of my arms. Not to mention chronic tachycardia and constant thrush in my mouth. Also my thyroid quit working a year ago and I am on synthroid now. Now it appears I may have an adrenal gland problem. I never had these problems before the Advair. When I mentioned my concerns to my pulmonologist he actually laughed at me. I wonder if Glaxo gives kickbacks to Dr.'s who prescribe their drug.

Well you all convinced me NOT to take this drung. I've had persistent sinus infections and ear infections and upper respiratory infections for years now. I've been on zyrtec, flonase, astelin, nasonex, abuterol, benadryl ( works the best in my opinion) claritin, anti-biotics-- out the yin yang-- and now my new doctor was suggesting singulair. Umm...I don't think so given what I have read in here.

I am already on the heavy side and DO NOT need to gain ANY weight. I could 't even think about not sleeping properly and having nightmares and I already deal with a bit of anxiety and take Xanax occasionally.

This drug DOES NOT sound as if it is for me!! I'd be a complete mess!!!

Thanks for all your insight. I'll tell the new doc to come up with another solution!
