I have had no side effects!!
Well I have been taking Avelox 400mg for 5 days now, and had no side effects whatsoever. I asked my doctor to give me this prescription for upper respiratory infection, and after two days of taking it, I felt 200% better. It is now 5 days, I feel great, and not one side effect. This goes to show that what may be a terrible experience using Avelox for one person, it may be a great experience for another person. I was a lucky one that have not had any side effects at all. I have never recovered so quickly from taking an antibiotic in my life and I'm 38 years old. I do though recommend doubling up on a 30 day treatment of Acidophilus. This will help you replenish the Good bacteria in your body that was also killed off when taking a strong antibiotic such as Avelox 400mg. This antibiotic kills the bad bacteria causing the infection and the good bacteria in your body as well. Acidophilus after treatment is highly recommended. Other than taking Acidophilus after the treatment, I found this antibiotic to be the best that I have ever taken. Take care, Joe.

I have a tip and an Indian friend of mine told me this traditional remedy and it worked with my white tongue coated with anti-biotics induced candida, he said you probably have this in your entire gut after the antibiotics especially after doxy. He told me to eat a fresh garlic clove every morning and drink at least 2-3 glasses after that. i did that and after 2 days my white candida coated tongue is gone. i feel a little refreshed for some reason. think its working wonders. if you research more it takes time for candida to go away. so i'm taking garlic every morning from now on. and in the evening and at night after meals, i take this GNC MEGA ACIDOPHILUS, has 1.5 billion cells in a capsule.

According to my 3 month research and dietitian's ideas and traditional remedies and friends who have experienced this who have posts on this site... Antibiotics kill all bacteria's in the entire gut, when they are killed they transform into yeasts and molds inhibiting the intestinal walls. Candida is the most common yeast. acidophilus alone wont do much and will take a lot of time until that yeast and mold are not cleaned.
GARLIC is the most potent natural yeast/mold killer for our entire GI without side effects. I suggest you clean your gut with that in the morning and while you are through the day, on your second meal take GNC's MEGA ACIDOPHILUS. try this remedy all of you and do let me know how it works out. the only thing i am scared of is the ringing in the ears even after 3 Months of quitting doxy but again i think everything that goes wrong in our body has something to do with our gut. after all, our entire Gastro-Intestinal Tract is our 80% immune system and we put antibiotics in our gut disrupting our very own immune system.

I didn't know doxycycline was this potent. Since its a Broad-Spectrum Anti-Biotic, it was supposed to do things it did to me and to people in this forum. Now the damage is done and I hope TIME WILL HEAL for sure as our livers and kidneys get rid of the drug from our blood slowly while we feed our gut with anti toxins and populate it with good bacteria.

After struggling with IBS for a few years, I finally found out I was lactose intolerant. My doctor told me to get Lactaid. It was the best thing in my life. I take it sparingly (half a pill if I am not eating much, and not daily). I also take a mild course of Acidophilus on a daily basis. I just wanted to post this so that those who are struggling with it can possibly find help.

Thank you for this site...although it is too late being I already poisoned myself with my 1st dosage - I know better now to STOP TAKING THIS DRUG IMMEDIATELY.
31 y/o male - non smoker - In good overall health.

What happened...(brief history of what got me to the point of being prescribed this horrid drug)
I caught a cold a few days after drinking quite heavily at a wedding (Aprox 1 month ago). It was severe enough for me to take a trip to this new doctor that is in my network and nearby (how I wish I could use my old family doctor that is out of network).
Symptoms then were congestion in my head and upper chest, cold sweats, runny nose. The doctor told me to take some over the counter stuff and try to fight it off w/ Mucinex, and Zyrtec - and lots of liquids. If that didn't work, he asked me to return.
It took about 5 days, and I seemed to kick the cold.
Approximately 2 weeks went by where I was feeling fine, then it seemed as if I was coming down with something again. (Last Thursday was when I started feeling ill)
I think what brought it on this time was breathing in excess dust at work opening some skids of paper in our warehouse.
Anyhow, this time around I had a pretty serious cough, felt feverish, and fatigued.
Sunday morning I woke up and took two Mucinex to break up the cough (which work great by the way)...and I hacked up something awful enough to call my doctors emergency line and have him paged. I was ready to go to the ER. It wasn't just phlegm or mucas - it was a soild mass of lord knows what containing blood. It look like an organ from a small critter.
Doctor said to keep taking the Mucinex and if I didn't feel better to come see him.
The coughing got worse on Monday, and the mucus I was spitting up wasn't pretty.
I went to see him yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) and he said its time to start you on an antibiotic and diagonsed me with an Upper Respiratory Infection.
He gave me Avelox, and Advair, and I asked for some of the good cough syrup w/ the codeine. He also sent me for a chest X-ray.
I got home around 4pm, made some food, then took some syrup and tried the advair.
I waited to take the Avelox til later on in the evening so I could set up a routine as I work nights and 9pm would be good.
I took the Avelox, around then, along with another dose of the cough syrup.
Around 1 hour later I felt extremely nauseous. I would burp, and feel almost ready to vomit...it was my body rejecting this horrible drug. The nausea came and went, came and went - then I got tired.

I laid down around 11pm and then the REAL trouble started. I must have fell asleep for about 30 mins, then woke up suddenly gasping for air...It felt like my heart was about to stop. I sat up in the bed panicked. I then got a little nervous, but calmed myself down, drank another glass of water and tried to fall back asleep. Sure enough just as I was about to drift off, the same sudden feeling of my breathing or heartbeat was interrupted and I sat up again. I had tingling in my chin area and in my arms. Walking to the bathroom I felt slightly disoriented and dizzy, and my legs and whole body felt weak. I also started getting itchy in my legs and groin area. Now I'm scared to go to sleep so I come to the computer and started researching this Avelox. It's 3:30 am now as I'm writing this. I looked at this site and http://www.fluoroquinolones.org/ before decided to post my experience.
I am still very itchy, slight nauseous, and feel disoriented. I'm scared to lay down to sleep now, but hopefully that will wear off soon - but I feel very nervous, uncontrollably. I almost want to induce vomiting to maybe get out any of the drug that is left in my stomach, but hate vomiting.
I will not take another dosage of this Avelox, no matter what this doctor tells me...and will give him a piece of my mind for prescribing this instead of something like ammoxocillin or just penicillin.

I finished a 5 day course of 1000 mg a day over a month ago. About a week afterward, I started having sharp pinging pains in the "bend" areas of where my colon is. Painful gas and bowel movements, and blood in the bowl. (not in stool) Also have had gum pain and mouth ulcers. My intestines feel blistered. I'll be ok a couple of days when eliminating, then suddenly a bowel movement will be followed by bright red blood and tissue. Very scary. I am taking Acidophilus, trying to eat carefully and drink only water, nothing harsh or citrusy. I have pain on the left side of my gut mostly. Under ribs, at waist and very low left side. I'm afraid, but then, this is a harsh drug and I do not have fever, have not dropped weight, lost appetite, or felt weak. I just feel like my insides are shredding and ulcerated. I will NEVER take this again. It's odd, because I have taken it before, for much long than this. I refused to take the last 2 doses the former time, because it literally tasted like fertilizer smells when i would belch after a pill. Vicious drug. I am watching myself and my issues, and hoping I don't have to have further treatment and that I have not totally ruined my colon beyond repair.

I was prescribed this drug for C-Diff.
This is my 2nd time taking this drug for the C-Diff.
It absolutely makes me so miserable,
physically and mentally.
I feel bad all over.
It's hard to describe, you feel like
you're going to die or something.
I have an extremely bad headache.
My shoulders and hands hurt.
I ache and feel weak.

I had a yeast infection a month ago and from time to time, I get this clear light green vaginal discharge. I was wondering if it is because of the BCP or what? I saw the OBG and they did some tests which all came back negative. just wondering if anyone of you out there is having the same thing. Thanks

DO NOT take antibiotics unless it is a Life or Death situation!
I have been diagnosed with CYSTITIS, based in my breasts & bladder, and now I'm scheduled to go in for other tests because I have had excessive bloating, IBS & pain in my gut.
I thought the Nuva Ring was causing my extreme random cramps, my breast soreness (Extremely Painful, making me want to inject them with novacaine, if it were a good idea...), my Pain During Sex (esp. since I have a lovely sex drive) and most recently, the constant urge to pee when I didn't, but it was NOT the birth control.
ANTIBIOTICS CAUSED THIS!
In the last month I have met 3 more women (& 1 man) with the same/similar problems and diagnosis, All on heavy antibiotics in the last year.
The good news is that it is Not cancerous to my knowledge, there are foods you can eat, like those that are good for reducing swelling, and it's a good idea to Avoid certain foods such as soy, anything too acidic like tomatoes, cranberries or citrus fruits & juices, preservatives, additives, really spicy foods, etc. **It is Very Important to take a Pro-Biotic capsule with At Least 4 different types such as Acidophilus, Bifidum, and others, depending on your symptoms & areas of concern (look up what bacteria does what). Taking these only during antibiotic usage Is NOT Enough!
The bad news? If a few months to a year of partial/full diet change does not help, it is considered either too late to help (get used to the pain, it's not going anywhere) or it may be an auto-immune disease, though this is quite rare.
PLEASE, LADIES -- Take Care when dealing with antibiotics, they are much more dangerous than many people/doctors know/are lead to believe. (And as for the yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis? Take 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide, 3 parts water, douche (rinse, do not let it set for more than 10 sec's) once a day before bed/naptime for a few days, splash Outside Only with cool water if needed, but Not inside. Burn/irritation for about 1 min. but Absolutely worth not waiting for a doc's prescript. or spending endless $ on crappy worthless ointments/creams. Totally safe when Diluted -- Hydrogen peroxide is made naturally on its own in All Vaginas, this just helps to kill yeasts and bad bacteria which are Anaerobic (do not like oxygen).)

I am 34 years old. I went to the OB today after having Mirena inserted in August. I had a baby last March and was nursing her at the time. I had asked my OB a few months ago if fatigue was a side effect, as I have been just exhausted for months. She said no. I am exercising, eating exceptionally well, and losing very little weight. I have been extremely emotional--on the verge of tears all the time. My marriage is terrible right now.

I mentioned at today's appt that I had some irritation/itching/rawness feeling in my vaginal area. She did a culture of my discharge and said there was no bacteria/infection, but she saw some "premature" cells, (I don't know recall exactly what she said, is a blur, but she gave me estradiol vaginal insert tablets and told me to use them for 3 months. She said that maybe starting me on Mirena while I was nursing got my estrogen too low and that I "shouldn't have to be on this {estradiol} forever." Am I now experiencing premature menopause? No wonder I've suddenly sprouted gray hairs over the last 6 months!

I have been on Singular for 3 years, the Dr prescribed
this for allergies. This past year I have noticed an increase in
sinus drainage constantly and a cough. Also some wheezing when I
lay down. A nurse told me today about
the write up on Singular and coughing because of Lisinopril.
Well coincidentally just last week I decided to stop the Singular and
no more sinus. drainage. NO MORE SINGULAR FOR ME and I am also telling my friends about it.

Just finished a prednisone taper. I am developing 'oral thrush' - can someone please give me a suggestion for getting rid of it quickly without having to take more medication??? A mouthwash or something - please this is awful.

I was on NuvaRing from February 2007 to August 2007. The first 3 months I experienced spotting and brown discharge after sex. I almost always experienced vaginal burning during, and after intercourse (as many of you mentioned), and had about 6 different diagnosed yeast infections (which I have never had before in my entire life), but I felt like they were constant than 6 and they never went away even after mega doses of expensive medications.. I took Acidophilus supplements, bought cremes from the store, took tons of rounds of Diflucan, but I was never feeling good and healthy down there the whole time I used it. Sex was usually painful and uncomfortable afterwards, and for the next few days afterwards even not having sex.

I also experienced extreme depression and lack of confidence, whether that was chemical, or due to how the was the ring made me feel physically (unattractive and incapable of acting as a sexual being).

I tried to tell my doctor I knew that the NuvaRing had caused these side effects, but she said that "There are no studies that suggest NuvaRing causes yeast infections or creates similar symptoms." This was very shocking to me. It felt like she had said it many times before to other women, but when I researched I couldn't find any information on negative side effects until now.

I'm a 37 year old female and have severe asthma and allergies and have used pregnisone on and off for 30 years. I believe I am the poster child for the long term side effects. My immune system is shot to the point that my normal medicines for asthma (ventolin, advair) and allergies (tylenol sinus, claritan, visine A) and ezcema (elidel, hydrocortisone, etc. - - NOTHING works!

In the past 6 months, I have developed various infections that the doctors have not been able to identify. My eyes are swollen and red with large amount of white/yellow secretions. Vaginal secretions. Face swollen. Skilled covered in a rash with ezcema out of control. Sharp pains in my back and stomach. Constant asthma. Abnormal hair growth. It is to the point that it is impossible to function and each doctor just wants to prescribe more pregnisone. I feel as if my body is a walking time bomb and it is so full of all the cortisone from over the years and has just decided no more.

I admit that I too readily believed in the doctors when they would rapidly prescribe the pregnisone. Only now am I paying attention to the long term side effects.

Has anyone had tests done to test their immune system and other organs for damage? Thanks and best to our pregnisone club.

I was put on a 5-day dose of Levaquin, and am on my 4th day. After the first dose, I started to get severe itching and pain in my vaginal area. I know it's a yeast infection because I had it once before. I have also had really bad insomnia for the past two days. Called my doc; she told me to continue the medicine and perscribed Diflucan and monistat 3-day. She also said to take Benadryl for itching, but I am feeling really tired already, and I think the Benadryl would just make it worse. I am very tempted to stop taking this med right now, but not sure if it's ok to do that. Has anyone else gotten a yeast infection from this? Thanks, and I hope everyone starts to feel better soon.

The Nuva Ring was giving me a yeast infection. So I talked to my doctor about it. Now I am on a regime of taking a diflucan (perscription to get rid of yeast infections) the day before I insert a new ring. Between that and taking acidophilus daily, I have not had any signs of a yeast infection!

I took my first (and only) dose of Omnicef 4 days ago for a sinus infection and have not stopped having tummy problems. The smell or even thought of food makes me want to vomit, I have constant non-stop diarrhea. I feel woozy and sweaty and like I am going to faint. I'm very thirsty and tired. My stomach is contantly rubmling and cramping and feels gassy but is much much worse. This prescription cost so much and only caused me more pain and trouble. Pepto-Bismol has not helped. PLEASE REFUSE TO TAKE OMNICEF IF YOUR DR. PRESCRIBES. I'd take a sinus infection over this any day. It terrifies me to think this is being prescribed for children...I am 34 and can not image what it must be like for a little one to have to go through this. I am going to find out what I can do NATURALLY to fix my stomach problems and take care of my sinus infection. Monday I'll look for a NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN to consult with in the future! P.S. The person who recommended taking a PROBIOTIC was right. I am going to begin taking ACIDOPHILUS.

Also increased yeast infections every time I take an antibiotic even if I eat yogurt and take extra acidophilus.

For people having stomach problems: There is a brand name of doxycycline called "Doryx" that is enteric coated so that it goes through the stomach and dissolves in the intestine instead, so that it doesn't cause stomach symptoms. Ask your doctor to switch to "Doryx".

With regard to diarrhea, I would recommend going to your local health food/supplement shop and picking up a probiotic like acidophilus in the refrigerated section (or perhaps a combination product with different probiotics). This will help to replenish "friendly" bacteria in the intestinal tract and prevent diarrhea if you take it at least twice daily. Just be sure to take it far away from your doxy dose.

With regard to thrush and yeast overgrowth, ask your doctor for some Nystatin. Nystatin is a very, very non-toxic anti-fungal with virtually no side effects most of the time. It is not absorbed from the intestinal tract. It is used to clear yeasts like candida from the mouth and digestive tract. It comes in both tablets and powder. If purchased in tabs, be sure to chew the tablets and swish the contents around in the mouth before swallowing.

Hi, I have been taking topamax for about 5 weeks now, maybe a little longer and only 25mg. I have to say my migraines are gone for the most part, except little what I would call headaches that don't last long now and then and I did have one migraine around my menstrual cycle. My side effects have been abnormal menstrual cycle, altered taste (especially pop), slight not hungry feeling, and urinary problems (UTI, frequent need to go, etc...) A couple of side effects that I think are from the medicine because I have seen them listed as side effects are sore throat, tongue has a burning sensation, but not all the time. Has anyone else had these side effects? I have read them as side effects (sore throat, burning sensations), but have never read anywhere of anybody actually having them, especially the tongue thing. Any input would be helpful. Thanks

I developed a staff infection from a horse throwing me and landing on my leg. What I though was scraped up skin was actually a big chunk of dead skin where there was no drainage. They drained about a 1/2 cup of puss from the back of my leg. Then I was presented with the choice of losing my leg or taking antibiotics. I chose the antibiotics because within 12 hours the infection had taken up almost all of the lower leg. I was given two antibiotics, one of them being levequin. I was on levequin for 15 days. I had no really severe reactions until the 14th and 15th day. Now the pain is very extreme in the sacral area and I have trouble sleeping sometimes, nightmares, and depression. My feet and hands became very dry and had burning pain. I had very bad stomach cramps which I used a flora/probiotic for and it corrected. I took 5 doses of 10 capsules... one that evening and 4 the next day (2 to 3 capsules equals 60 billion viable cells per gram of flora or acidophilus and bifidum cultures. I am now continuing that treatment taking 10 capsules a day. I have heard that lactobacillus GG is the best culture for antibiotic resistant bacteria (C-diff toxin bacteria colitis).
I have been praying and searching for a holistic treatment for the problems. Because the fluoride in levequin makes the body very acidic and robs the body of calcium I have taken many supplements and done a lot of raw juices. I think the reason I did not react sooner is because I have been using a rounded teaspoon of dulse (a seaweed containing natural iodine with naturally occurring minerals) a day and a teaspoon of chlorella, both of which (iodine and chlorella) are specific for eliminating toxic metals and poisons in the body (ex. copper, radiation, mercury, fluoride, etc.). The best product I have used for the pain is an alkaline water call Essentia. I can be in horrible pain and drink a full glass of this and I the pain eases right up and my brain clears. The water is sold at the Smith Food Stores and I would like to see someone else here try it and see what it does for their pain. I honestly believe that the human body has the intelligence to heal provided we can supply it with the right healing substances to carry the poison out.
I will be trying acupuncture to hopefully further accelerate the healing process and stabilize the back, so I can do a let you know how that works. I would like to see more feedback of what works to alleviate the problems.

Started 500mg for sinus/upper respiratory infection on 7/15. So, I am on day 7 of a 14 day prescription. Side effects include: restlessness, insomnia, muscle restlessness (not really a pain, more like a spasm feeling) in thighs and forearms, headaches that radiate down through my jaw and cause tooth pain, neck tension, increased appetite - especially cravings for sweets (which has led to some reflux and sore throat). Dr. refuses to acknowledge these as side effects and feels they are symptoms of the infection. White count originally at 16 is down to 12, so she feels the Levaquin is working and that I should stay on it. ??? Not sure what to do, so I've started taking Acidophilus 3 times a day to at least counter the possibility of yeast build up in intestines.

I am so glad i found this site. I was convinced i was developing severe arthritis at age 39. I was put on a 3 weeks course of levaquin in November to combat a sinus polyps and sinus infections. Shortly after, i started complaining to my husband that i was afraid i was getting arthritis. Had the aches and pains through December and then got another sinus infection in january. Was given another course of levaquin and the 2nd day into it, i awoke with terrible pains in my wrists, knees, ankles and shoulders. I called my doctor and got prescribed another antibiotic. It is now February 7 and the side effects linger including sleeplessness (benadryl can get me to sleep) and dry mouth. My symptons kind of come and go - my joints will feel fine for a couple of days and then randomly the pain returns in my ankle, or hands and feet (sometimes all 3). I wanted to encourage many of you that although this is irritating and uncomfortable, you will get better in time - it is a slow process to get this drug out of your system. I have done lots of research and have found that taking 2 tablespoons of milk of magnesium a day can help clear the poison from your system plus taking acidophilus to restore your healthy bacteria and echenasia goldenseal to restore your immune system. Plus and most importantly drink LOTS of water. I have learned that depending on the severity of your reaction - that getting back to normal can take anywhere from a few months to 2 years (for the most severe reactions) But more than likely, it will be a several months. I am feeling better and the aches are tolerable. I am thankful i figured out it was the levaquin or i might be in really bad shape right now. I have two small kids, work part time and don't have time for this!!! I have also learned that you can take this medication one time and suffer mildy and then the second dose can knock you out - so even if you didn't react severely the first time, i urge you not to take it again. Anyway, i would love to hear from others how long it took to get better. I am 2 weeks into my recovery and feeling hopeful and lots more educated. I will never take meds for granted again. Normal, healthy male, 57, with suspected prostrate infection. Prescribed 500MG Levaquin for 30 days. I've used it before over the years for sinus infection (10 day regimen) and it was quite effective, although I had noticed some muscle and tendon soreness. This time, 14 days into it, I'm experiencing severe irritability, and stress. The muscle soreness and joint stiffness are constant, particularly in the feet and hands. I've read a number of postings about accompanying stomach and digestive problems - you must use acidophilus when taking a drug like this - all the beneficial flora in the digestive tract are being destroyed and you have to replace them or you'll get bloating, gas, stomach and intestinal cramping, etc. The mental distress is new for me on this one and it concerns me.

Wow!!! I was on Advair for 6 days when I got what I thought was indigestion that would not go away but it was in my throat. I mentioned to the doc that I was fine before the Advair and medrol pack (asthma attack) but was given Reglan and told to take Pepcid twice a day and sent for an upper GI series. The GI series was fine. I slept upright, stopped the coffee, soda, tomato products, downed Tums and Mylanta but nothing helped. Stopped the Advair and saw the doctor the next day. Again told the doc I was fine before the Advair, on Advair for 2 weeks and my throat was checked this time. White blisters!! On Nystatin and now lozenges. My throat stills feels horrible after a week on these meds. Added Acidophilus, Garlic pills, CoQ10 and waiting to feel better. NEVER, NEVER take Advair.

I would like to Thank all of you for taking the time to inform others about your experience of side effects from advair. I have learned so much! And I'd like to thank Guest 4309 for making the connection between yeast infection and advair. After doing a google search for yeast infection, I found many reputable sites (Duke University, urology.org, etc.) that state that steroids and corticosteroids (that's what advair is) can and do cause yeast infections (Candida, thrush, skin infections, sinsus and ear infections/itching). I AM BLOWN AWAY THAT MY ALLERGIST TOLD ME FOR A YEAR THAT THE CONTAST ITCHY THROAT and EARS and LOSS of VOICE, among other problems, WERE NOT CAUSED BY ADVAIR! Like Guest 4309 I wish I had NEVER taken advair. I am off it now and I'm taking glucosamine and acidophilus and eating lots of plain yogurt. Let me tell you, I already feel better. ANd I have sent for the book "Conquering Candida" on www.half.com for $7.50. I'll let people know what happens to me. ANd, please let us all know what works for you!
