Wow, it amazes me how many negative reviews this BC (birth control) received after doing a Google search and yet this RING FROM HELL is STILL on the market. And even worse, doctors who are prescribing it are CLUELESS. They don't give you the full extent of the side effects when you ask them about it. And when you don't ask them, they don't even tell you anything!
My first experience with NuvaRing was a positive one, or so I thought. I was on it for about 1 1/2 years, if I remember correctly. It cleared up my skin, made me gain weight (which is actually a good thing, considering I was always so rail-thin), breasts got bigger, didn't affect my sex drive...it basically took care of all the problems I was having before. However, looking back, I do remember gradually losing my mind, having dizzy spells, and depression. I don't remember why exactly I took the ring out, but I think it was because I didn't have insurance anymore to cover it. The experience of going off the ring wasn't too bad at all, from what I can remember.
NOW, just recently, approx. 9 weeks ago, I decided to give this thing a whirl for a second time because I mostly remembered the high points and I was dealing with acne breakouts on my cheeks when I turned 22 (which I never had before). I remembered how well it cleared up my skin last time, when I was dealing with mild teenage acne. Unfortunately, this time around, being on it for roughly 2 months, I didn't have such a great experience. Side effects came on strong immediately, and the worst I've felt. Like this one time, I was getting ready to sleep when suddenly, I felt like my chest was being sat on, like a sensation of heaviness or pressure on my chest and I could not inhale fully. I couldn't catch my breath if that makes sense. It lasted until I finally passed out from sleepiness. It was scary...also; I started to have acne breakouts as well, and developed rash acne AND 2 deep pimples that were large in size. This made me quickly remove the ring on the spot, even though I had just inserted 3 days ago. Other side effects included painful bloating, constipation, very bad cramps, negative mood, low sex drive, vaginal burning and dryness, occasional chest pinch or pressure, and zero motivation.
Also, quick question, has anyone experienced moments of complete stiffness or dazedness or whatever? For example, I remember I was eating a great meal and watching TV with my fiance when suddenly, I just started to slow down in movement. I just put my utensils down and placed my arms on my side, and my vision became out of whack. It went from blurry to clear, blurry to clear and I felt out of it and that something was very wrong with me. Like, I was spacing out hardcore. It was like being catatonic, but not fully. Not sure if this was directly related to the BC, but I've never experienced this before until I was on the NuvaRing...hmmm
Anyway, after taking the ring out about 4 days ago, I have experienced what seems to be yet a second withdrawal period (as well as headaches). And I just ended my "period" last week. Only had the damn ring back in for 3 days?? Now I'm concerned because I've read you can have side effects even while trying to GET OFF the ring? Such as hair loss, unrecovered sex drive, acne, and withdrawal bleeding which lasts for days to weeks. And I was only on the ring this time around for 9 weeks. I will keep you all posted on how long my withdrawal effects take to subside….
This is my personal experience with it and I think that the idea to directly penetrate hormones into our bloodstream with third generation hormones is just too much for us women to handle. Why is it that we women have to suffer through all this? Why don't men create a birth control for THEMSELVES and deal with it! After all, we can't get pregnant without a sperm so men should be on BC, not us! Grrrrrr…Sorry, another withdrawal side effect from getting off the ring (crankiness).
Good luck to all,
L.A.

I was so glad to find this website. I was feeling terrible after having the Mirena in for around a year. I started looking online when I woke up several days in a row feeling so bad and nauseous that I was worried I was pregnant!
I was very fatigued, achy, having trouble sleeping, having strange acne breakouts on weird parts of my body, terrible abdominal cramps - yet no period, bowel problems, VERY slow to heal my sports strains/sprains, nauseous, random headaches (and I have NEVER been prone to headaches), odor, crotch drop, hair loss, forgetfulness, BAD mood swings/depression, dehydration. I looked and felt like I had aged 10 years...All this time I was blaming it on having a two kids, getting older, stress, etc.
Well, thanks to this site, I had my Mirena removed last week. I had no ill side effects from the removal and had a normal period for the first time in about 6 months. I felt incredibly better in a few days! I have more energy, I have slept much more soundly - the dark circles around my eyes are diminishing and I look much better. My routine bumps and bruises from soccer and taekwondo are healing at a normal pace and I don't feel achy all the time. Basically I feel great, and I hadn't for a long time. I feel like myself again.
If you have ANY of these symptoms that everyone is talking about...don't write it off to anything else, and don't let your doctor tell you it's due to other things. You know your body and what is normal. If you are wondering at all why you feel bad - get the thing OUT and do it NOW! (My GYN was very understanding and compliant to my request, but still insisted that my symptoms were most likely due to stress than anything else). At least you will have peace-of-mind knowing that you eliminated the IUD as a cause of your symptoms. You can always have a new one put in if you find that not to be the case.
I hope this site is correct regarding the class action lawsuit, because I am seriously considering joining it. Mom's have it hard enough without this IUD complicating their lives further!

Started Januvia about 7 months ago. Have noticed increasingly blurred vision (not sure if I am just developing long sightedness though - I'm 41), some disrupted sleep patterns, adult acne breakouts and they take forever to heal (which I never had a problem with before), slow healing of small cuts on fingers and with the slow healing, scars are obvious. After reading all the posts here, I am determined to check with the doctor to consider taking off Januvia altogether...not willing to risk more exposure. Exercise and diet will help enough with Glucobay as before.

I am a 37 year old Mom of 4 children. All were c-section babies. I had my tubes tied after the 4th child. She is now 2 years old. I went in to my OB/GYN complaining of uncontrollable bleeding and crazy heavy periods that lasted up to 14 days and left me feeling fatigued and miserable. I was given an extensive ultrasound. No abnormalities seen except for an elongated uterus. I was not a candidate for ablation, and they felt I was too "young" to consider a partial hysterectomy. So they pushed the MIRENA. I asked a million questions. I was only told how wonderful it is and that I should respond well to MIRENA. I used a contraceptive patch for my wedding and honeymoon, so that I wouldn't have my awful period through it. Then a week after the honeymoon was drug free. Then I had MIRENA inserted in surgery under anesthesia after a dnc. I bled for a month and a week straight. Then it slowed and stopped. I still had 10 day cycles for 5 months, not as heavy as before but not the light ones I read about either. This month I only had a three day cycle. As for all the symptoms, I truly thought it was stress... as I run my own business have a new husband and 4 children and am in a nasty custody battle over my first three kids with the ex husband. I've never experianced acne breakouts until MIRENA, I am so exhausted and never feel rested when I scrape myself off the mattress, and I have breakthrough bleeding after every time we have intercourse. I feel like I have pms daily and have been dieting with no results. I even went to my GP and tried a prescription weight loss drug to boost my weight watcher's efforts. I no longer have insurance to cover having it out, and can't afford the hysterectomy I actually need. I feel relieved that I am not the only one, but trapped by a doctor who should have listened to me when I told her I don't do well on hormone drugs and that I really just don't need my poor scarred and tired uterus any more.
Thanks for sharing.

I had the Mirena put in a year ago. Experienced bleeding for approx 3 weeks. Not really seen my period since(Wooohoooo),except for some light spotting round "that time of the month". I recently have been experiencing very bad acne breakouts.Have always felt that my tummy is bloated and have a very low sex drive. But my BIG QUESTION is Has anybody experienced a burning sensation in either of their bum cheeks,(especially when sitting, feels like it's on fire)which is unexplainable by numerous doctors and endless tests I have had done. Not sure if it's related, but so desperate for this burning to stop.

I had the Mirena inserted on 06/19/08, a day before I was scheduled for my second back surgery. Yea, I maybe should've waited but it took me 3 months just to get an appt with my gyne so I decided to keep it. It hurt like hell. I didn't think much of it because it was birth control (just implanted). Well, the next day I had surgery and everything was fine. All the doctors new that I did have the procedure prior to surgery and said it would not interfere. Anyhow, I was sent home and ended up back in the hospital 3 days later from a horrible migraine. I had never had a migraine in my life and it very unlikely to start with symptoms at the age of 30. They thought it was a possible reaction to anesthesia but the more I think about it...I don't think so. All test were negative but I had a migraine for about 3 days. I was very depressed and in extreme amount of pain (from headache, not the back-- that part was actually a breeze compared to last time). I started with severe anxiety attacks to were I was (and still am) afraid to drive on the freeway. I have a feeling of uncontrol/ fuzzy- like I'm not really driving, just floating along the freeway. My skin is horrible. I have acne breakouts like crazy and am actually getting a "rash/small bumps" on the upper part of arms/shoulders. It's weird cause my friend has this same symptom and she has had hers for about 2 years. Anyhow, I have weight gain, some hair loss but have noticed more so hair growing on my face/chin. Headaches are still there (sharp, stabbing to forehead) but they come in spurts. I'm very irritable and my husband thinks I don't love him anymore because I don't want to have sex. (Whats the use of being on birth control if you don't want to have sex?) My breast are very tender to touch and I am very tired and dizzy at times. I have scheduled an appt for mid Dec to have it removed. I will update the status of symtoms. From what I can tell by reading all the blogs....its definitely this IUD.

I have had the Merina for 4 years. I never had any problem with it...up untill now. Insertion was easy and my periods stayed regular. No problems at all. I even recommended it to all my friends. This last year I have had so much depression and phantom pregnancies. I keep thinking I am pregnant when I am not. I think my body is not agreeing with the hormones.
My friend had hers removed after 1 month due to weight gain.
My sister's started to fall out and now she is 6 months pregnant. She had it removed as soon as she found out she was preg.
I wanted to let you all know there is a link and phone number on the Merina website to report negative side effects to the FDA.

I have had the Mirena for 1 1/2 yrs now. Within the past six months I have started to develop acne, all the while my period was starting to fade less and less every month. Now, the acne is severe and the periods are completely gone. I'm just wondering if this is all related. I have scheduled a appointment with a skin clinic, and also called my gyno. I am waiting on a reply from the nurse at the gynos office to see if I need to go on to the skin clinic, or if I just need to get this removed. I have never had more then a pimple or two on my face at one time. Now, I have them completely covering my hair line, almost like a rash.

Ugh. I'm so glad I found this list and that everyone has been so candid!!! I am in my 2nd pack of Femcon and the symptoms are only getting worse. Toward the end of the first week I began spotting and did so on and off for 2 weeks. When I took the brown pills, I had my classic day-later start of a true period, as I have done with the Ortho versions I used to be on. Naturally, the period was very light--actually it never did go to red, only icky brown for a whole week. Then I started the first 2 pills of the 2nd pack before seeing my doctor for the pre-op appointment before my Esure procedure. (He put me on this pill when I told him that I didn't trust condoms alone in the 3 month waiting period while the procedure takes--I don't trust the Divine Sense of Humor this close to finally being sterile.) He told me to stop taking them for 5 days while they put me on something else that would thin out my lining so they could better see the entrances to my tubes, then continue them like I had never stopped. Great. I did that and the procedure has healed nicely. I went back on the pills--much to my dismay. I'm back to all-month-long PMS, tender breasts and spotting. I have been baffled and attributing the constant headaches, cycles of insomnia & exhaustion, lack of motivation, depression, acne breakouts, weight gain, dehydration even though I'm guzzling water, bloating, mood swings, and decreased sex drive to the stresses of everything BUT this pill, because I have never had this problem before. In fact, previous ones helped alleviate mood swings, cramping, irregular and heavy periods, acne, and bloating, but I've been experiencing the opposite for nearly 2 months now. The other day, in addition to the cramps and spotting, I started having major stabbing pains in my lower abdomen--where the Esure could be possibly causing pain--except that they didn't do it on that side because my fallopian tube is blocked naturally. My breasts have been getting more and more sore, and tonight they hurt terribly without touching anything except clothing! The cramps are continual, as are the headaches, and I wake up with my hands completely numb. I haven't been able to get to sleep well for weeks (it is 3:05 a.m. now) and I'm dragging all day. Trying to wake up from a nap is like waking from the dead, and then I'm disoriented and out of it. I'm having dizzy spells too. I can't focus and every little thing sets me off--my poor friends and boyfriend! I'm up and down like a toilet seat!! I don't know if the sore throat I've had for the past couple days has anything to do with this, but I don't feel sick. Could be allergies...??? The last couple days I've had diarrhea and an upset stomach, and with how quickly the breast tenderness level rose to horrible, my insomnia and anxiety rose to an all-time high as I feared I was pregnant. So I bounded out of bed to start looking up pregnancy side-effects, only to see that many of them could be caused by birth control--particularly this birth control--and hence I found this list. THANKFULLY! Grrrrrrrr. Needless to say, I'll be making a phone call to my doc tomorrow. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. I hope mine helps others!

I am 25 and have been taking Yasmin for about a year and a half. I switched to it because it would help my acne breakouts (face and chest/back),
as well as "reduce bloating" according to my doctor.
It did indeed help with helping calm down the PMS mood swings around 'that time of the month'.
However, especially in the last few months, I have noticed a very dramatic decrease in my libido and bouts of being down or 'blue' aka depression-like symptoms, as well as breast tenderness. Also strangely enough, one of the side effects listed on the info sheet claims it can cause bloating. So who do I believe? This is my point exactly...
Ladies, take 5 minutes and CAREFULLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS that come inside the box of your Yasmin pills. When you do, you might be surprised by what you find, like I was.
I have been on several types of birth control since I was about 17, from Tri-cyclen, to Diane-35 and others.
What the doctors and pharmaceutical companies DON'T tell us, is that female sex hormones can cause cancer. This is literally written in the fine print on the info you get with your pills. It's there you just have to look for it.
Think about it... these companies get paid masses of money to keep you ignorant and thinking that there is little to no risk of taking birth control pills. They won't get paid if millions of women stop taking their doses.
Even my mom, who was taking hormones to balance out her menopausal issues, has a increased risk of cancer now due to taking hormones.
Just research it a little bit, google it and you will see.
Birth control pills can have permanent effects, and even temporary effects that cause you to feel miserable.
This is your life, your health, and we have to be aware of what we are putting in our bodies!!!!!!
Is gaining 5 lbs or having a few pimples really worth the risk of depression and the possibility of cancer??
I am not extremest, that is, I am not saying that no females should take birthcontrol pills. I understand there will always be a demand.
But this forum is important because it let's us share our worries. I am worried for myself (will these hormones contribute to breast cancer issues later in life?), and I am worried for all the girls out there who want the benefits of a pill (clear skin, regular periods) don't know that the side effects can be life threatening.
Educate yourself!! , don't believe everything the drug companies tell you, and what the doctors DO NOT tell you.
Remember, YOU are the only expert on YOU!

I posted back in early March 2008 and figured I would update my experience with Mirena. I had many symptoms that most posted on here but not all. I figured I would give this option a few months and if the symptoms continued, I would have it removed. After a month, all symptoms have disappeared. Periods are lighter, no pain during intercourse and I can breathe a sigh of relief. No longer do I have to worry about pregnancy ( I always used natural planning going by my body cycle). I did have slight weight gain but started exercising more to offset the extra calories I was taking in with the sudden cravings for food. All and all, I am glad I stuck with it and let my body adjust to Mirena. Good luck to all of you.

My 12-year old son has been high dose prednisone for his asthma flare ups. I know that the "moon face" is common. However, since using this prednisone, he has bad acne breakouts on his forehead, cheeks, chin and even in his head. He also has broken out in a rash on his neck. Common or uncommon? There seems to be nothing to help with the acne, either.

I've been on Advair 100/50 for about 2 weeks and have steadily experienced acne breakouts on my face. Could this be a side effect? I have experienced slight weight gain also. But my biggest concern is the acne. I just got it all cleared up for this to happen again? Frustrated, please help.

After trying several Birth Control Pills, I switched to Yasmin about 1 year ago. Initally I had no problems. All was well, no spotting, less acne breakouts. About 4 months ago I started getting severe mirgranes. I have never had headache problems before. I also experinced a decrease in sex drive. I have been with the same man for 5 years and we were just recently married. I knew there was no problem with my attraction to him. It had to do something with the Yasmin. I quit taking the pill about 1 month ago. I feel like I am getting back to my old self. I hope this advice is helpful to others!

I am on my 3rd week of Ovcon. I experienced nausea for the first 2 weeks till I starting taking it with a meal at night. Lots of cramps, acne breakouts on face and back and crying spells. I started spotting on the 3rd week and have been spotting and experiencing cramps for the past 6 days. I have gained at least five pounds. I was on Ortho-tricyclin before and it made me even more sick. Hopefully the side effects will get better. At least the nausea has gone away.
