I had terrible sinus problems combined with my deviated septum. Swollen nostrils, constant nasal drip, couldn't sleep at night, and terrible sore throat in the morning. Started taking nasonex two months ago... Stopped all my problems in a few days. After two weeks I was only spraying each nostril once about 2-3 times a week. My periods are always every 28 days and my past period was 10 days late, I am still waiting for this months period (over a week late). I realized it has to be the nasonex. Along with menstrual problems, I have had terrible nightmares, acne problems (for the first time ever, I'm 24), a few nosebleeds, headaches that have lasted over 4 days, and itchy skin. I didn't put it all together until I saw this website. I will not be spraying my nose again, from now on I will be using the nedi pot.

Wow. I am not even close to being done reading everyone's comments on Loestrin, and I am already EXTREMELY P.O'ed and at the same time relieved, at the fact that I found this page. I am 18 years old, and I started on Tri-Cyclin Lo when I was 15. I loved it, and never had any problems with it what-so-ever. It even helped with my acne problems. But a few months ago, my insurance decided to stop covering birth control, so my OBGYN decided to put me on Loestrin 24 Fe, because with the card you only have to pay 24 tops a month. But anyway, I now realize that all of the hell that has been happening in the past 3-4 months is due to Loestrin Fe. And after reading all of your comments I am POSITIVE! My Boyfriend and me have been fighting all of the time, and I have just been getting upset for no reason. I thought that it was because things between my boyfriend and me just aren't the same, and that maybe we are just growing apart.. but after reading all of your comments, and taking some time to think about it... IT HAS TO BE THE B.C! Before I started this pill we got along all the time... And also, my sex drive has plummeted so fast and drastically, to the point where my sex drive is NON EXISTENT. It has been hurting our relationship on top of my mood swings, because our sex life is also NONEXISTENT.. and we live together! I used to want to have sex all of the time.. and I haven't honestly wanted to have sex (not even once!) for the past few months...since I started Loestrin!!! Additionally, my face has been breaking out before periods excruciatingly bad. It has seriously hurt my self esteem. I have always had some issues with acne, but it has gotten ridiculous. I even bought an expensive acne kit that is supposed to be number one in the country, and it still keeps getting worse! .. And lastly I have been putting on a lot of weight, even though I have been eating the same.. also hurting my self esteem. Today, my bf and I finally came to the conclusion that "hmmm.. it most definitely might be the birth control." ..so I decided to come online and check out the side effects. AND BOOM! I see tons and tons and tons of comments from Women of all ages with the same, horrifying side effects. I am going to stop this birth control immediately. If my insurance won't cover anything else, and I can't afford any others, I will just deal with my cramps and longer periods. I never thought I would say this in a million years, but I would RATHER deal with the horrible cramps and long periods, than have to deal with the bull s*** that Loestrin has put me through. If anyone has anymore insight, message me or reply! Thanks.

My name is Stephanie and I had the Mirena IUD inserted in 12/2004, about a year after I had my daughter. I had some cramping in the first few months following it's insertion. My periods slowly lightened over my first year and now I haven't had a period since. I will spot every once in a long while for about a day. I have lite acne problems but nothing that can't be handled with washing my face before I go to bed at night. I didn't not experience any weight gain while using the IUD. I think women forget to change their eating habits after the baby is born. YOUR NOT PREGNANT ANYMORE! I love this contraceptive and plan on using it again. Mood swings maybe but I'm a woman that comes with the territory. Anyway, if you are thinking about using this IUD don't listen to only the complaints, this is a good contraceptive it's just not for everyone but that's with any contraceptive on the market. Be smart research all contraceptives, find what your body can handle.

The experience is not with me, but my daughter, who is a sufferer of PCOS and experienced acne problems She's been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo since January 2007, and received positive results for acne and regulating menstrual cycle, with minimal side effects. Since being switched to generic tri-lo sprintec (July 29), she's experiencing lethargy, some headaches, moodiness, acne, and slight depression, which is very unlike her. What I recommend to everyone on this website is to submit adverse event to the pharmaceutical company, Teva. They should have a website and or a call line for presenting your concerns. I will be doing this because this drug definitely needs to be reported and possibly pulled from the market.

I had my youngest daughter in May 2008 and had the Mirena inserted in August 2008. I have had a period every month (which is unusual for me, I usually get them every 2) but not heavy. They seem to be slowing down now though, about every 5 weeks. I don't have acne problems or weight gain problems (I will gain a pound or so right before my period but that seems to go away pretty quickly after my period) but I have had the sexual side effects. I have no sex drive and have trouble climaxing, which was not usually a problem before. And the mood swings...well, that's just not like me to yell at my kids and my husband but that's what's been happening. I sometimes feel like a different person. That part of it has gotten a little better since my daughter started sleeping better around February, but I still notice mood swings that weren't there before.

Just want to survey everyone and ask for responses for the following 3 questions:

1. how long did you keep your Mirena and if you no longer have it, why did you have it removed?

2. how many of you had your thyroid checked? who's came back abnormal? what were the levels?

(I'm a medical student doing research on this one since I believe the levonorgestrel affects our thyroid hormone. My TSH was elevated to 5.2 which is considered "subclinical HYPOthyroidism". This was mid cycle when my natural progesterone AND synthetic progestin were cumulatively high. When I had it rechecked 6 weeks later (around my period when any natural progesterone level is gone) it was normalized at 1.5. So I think that the P+P screws up our thyroid and can throw us into a high TSH and "hypothyroid state". The opposite effect may be true during menstruation and we can become HYPERthyroid for a few days... hence the really bad anxiety?!)

3. where is everyone from? perhaps we can have support group meetings?

Had Mirena inserted about October 2006. Hurt a lot and bled a lot upon insertion. Spotting for a short time and then no periods (spotting about 4 times in last 2.5 years). Perhaps an increase in iritibility but that can also be expected with 2 rambunctious kids and a less-than-perfect husband. :-) No other symptoms.

Finally got Mirena removed because of acne problems that have lasted for a year. Got it removed April 24, 2009. No problems at all and my skin is clearing up nicely. Two weeks later I am now suffering from incredible dizzyness, nausea, fatique, and abdominal cramping, to the point of staying home from work. Though I'm also worried about the possibility of pregnancy as well.

My girlfriend has taken a total of 2 Lupron shots. She is due for the third, but refuses to go back. The first shot did not due much, but after the second, the night sweats and hot flashes came. Now, she is always tired, has been since a month ago, been having major headaches also. Feels sick at times and has gained 10 lbs. She is having acne problems and she even is taking a pill that is suppose to stop that problem. I have never seen a drug like this junk. The doctor never told her of all this, just said this will help with the stage 3 endo she has. DO NOT TAKE THIS JUNK!!! It is just another way for doctors to take your life away from you and still let you live.....

I last posted here that I started the ring March 6, 2008 that everything was going so far so good with the NuvaRing and its now April 5, 2009 and I'm getting off of the ring in one week and never putting in another one. In the past 6 months I have had no sex drive, few orgasms, a sharp pain underneath my left breast that comes and goes, and a 10 lb weight gain. I'm a 24 year old professional figure skater and should not be going through those side effects. I'm in excellent health and active daily. I have not had any headaches, no nausea, no depression, no fatigue, no acne problems, or spotting. I did not get on the NuvaRing to help my acne nor my periods, I got on the ring because I got into a relationship where I was having sex. I'm still in the relationship and its ruined our sex life. Not to mention I was paying $25 dollars for every ring and now its gone up to $54. I thought it was a smart idea to get on the ring because of the convenience but now I can do without it. Everyone should try the ring once to see how you react to it because EVERYONE is different. I'm just not interested in the aggravation anymore.

Yasmin has been great in fixing up my acne problems. I have not gained any weight but my mood swings are atrocious! I feel like I am in a dark tunnel at least once a month (around the sugar pill time), I keep spotting brown mucus. This just started in the last fortnight. I will go a day or so with no problems then it starts again. I am going to the doctor on Monday to find out what is going on. I am getting married in one month's time and I dread to think of my honeymoon night! Spotting brown goo! But I don't want my skin to break out. I went on the Yasmin because of the fact it has a mild diuretic in it which helps me because I have fluid retention issues at times. Has anyone else experienced spotting on and off?? I also have a lot of leg cramps and back ache on a regular basis!! Thank you!

I have been on Loestrin 24 Fe for almost 8 months now. After a 2 yr battle with a generic version of seasonale (which just stopped working and i bled for 2 months and then had NO bleeding on the third, no period either!) I completely went off bc for 3 months and experienced withdrawal symptoms that were horrible. So my doctor put me on Loestrin and the first month was great. I had a period that last 1 hr, and the pharmacist said "count it as a blessing." After that I had nausea, headaches (have one right now), bloating, no appetite, then all of a sudden a huge appetite!, yeast infections (which I don't get normally), discharge (a lot), abdominal pains, and its very hard to see out of my contacts so I opt for my glasses... Its also expensive. I am thinking about switching, again, until I find the right one for my body. This pill makes me think I'm pregnant. Moodiness, sore breast, nausea...and I know for a fact I'm not! I haven't had acne problems but I owe that all to drinking a lot of water, keeping hydrated. I can't get off of bc because those issues are worse than both bc I've had! Anyone know of a great pill they've experienced?

I just started my second pack of Femcon FE a couple days ago. I switched over from Yaz because my GYN said underweight girls need higher dosage pills because they lack estrogen producing pills. The yaz made me incredibly depressed and i started getting panic attacks so i decided to try it out. So far i have not had mood swings or panic attacks. YAY!! And i have been quite horny ^_^. Unfortunately i think i am starting to break-out. I have always had acne problems but when i first switched to Femcon FE my really large blemishes (cystic acne?) disappeared in a couple of days. Now i am getting a bunch of little tiny red bumps which i have never had before. Like i said it is my second month on femcon so i am not sure if that is what is causing it but i am going to keep an eye on it because i was given birth control to clear up acne, not make it worse. Also, i just washed my face with the same cleanser i always do and it is burning now...odd. Hopefully this clears up because i am definitely enjoying Femcon more than my previous pill.

okay ladies, i posted about 6 months ago regarding my acne and moodiness. I went to my doctor and consulted about having the Mirena removed. She said the acne would subside in 3 months due to a decrease in the hormone. I was prescribed an antibiotic and some some results however, I am now having the Mirena removed next week. My ACNE is horrible and embarrassing. I feel like a teenager and feel self conscious at work or socializing. Just like when I was a teen. I hate it and am fed up. I get a new zit everyday. I am broken out on my face, back, neck, and arms. how gross. I do not feel attractive and can't wait to have it out. I called Planned Parenthood today just to see if I could get it out NOW. But it will have to wait until next week. I am going to look into the Nuvaring and see if that is any different. I will say the only thing I liked about Mirena was not having to worry about popping a pill everyday. Anyway, if you had acne problems before I would not recommend getting this. Sorry for the spelling but I am so frustrated right now.

How can I describe my thanks to this site and everybody telling their stories? Thank you oh soooo much!!!

My not so short story: Im on my second Mirena, in total now for just over 8 years. The first Mirena was all joy, periods stopped, no side effects whatsoever. Then I got the second Mirena after I removed the first after over 5 years (my gyn recommended keeping it in for longer but I didn't want to take the risk).

And for the past 2 years my ACNE problems started, first only one or two cystic acne once a month or a couple of small ones here and there. Nothing major. But for the past year, my skin / face makes me feel like a freak. So I went to the derm, got put on Accutane, more meds with a yard long list of side affects. Had to go of Accutane cos my right eye's sight deteriorated so bad I couldn't drive home at night. Went to my house doctor, he wanted to take me of the Mirena asap and refered me to a new gyn, cos mine moved away and I was stuck. But the new gyn did not want to take it out, but rather put me on a retinoid cream, cos it wasn't the acne that caused the acne.... yea right. So 5 months I gave this retinoid cream... I feel like a freak with my face, both cheeks inflamed red bumps under the skin, large cystic acne everywhere... sigh.

But during this 5 months I found a web site acne.org and here I made friends and read stories and hoping and praying, even believing things are getting better, but they weren't. If I look at pics I took of myself 5 months ago and now... sadly things are worse. My self confidence is gone, and I don't even want to have sex with my husband with the light on!!! And then last week somebody posted on the acne site some posts regarding zinc supplements, and I read and researched more on zinc and acne and found that your skin needs zinc to be healthy and having no zinc could be because of to much copper or copper toxicity. So then I researched copper toxicity and found some web sites with references to birth control.... and a bright light went on... and I found this site...

I am glad to say I saw my normal trusted house doc again last night, and made an appointment to have the thing, Mirena, removed first thing Monday morning. I have stopped using any meds like the retinoid cream for my face and cant wait for Monday. I just hope my face returns to normal quickly.... time lines anyone? I had no trouble with acne ever until now.... and Im 35!!! Udult acne my @#$ :)

My right eye now needs laser surgery to remove a layer or something, Im seeing an eye specialist soon, and this was caused by the accutane drying up my eyes so much! :(

I will report back to let other ladies know how it went and how I am progressing... thinking of taking a daily photo of my skin for reference purposes.

Pray for me please, I really need it....

C.

I'm 25 yrs and have a 21 months old baby. I want to start Yasmin for two reasons (1) for my acne problems and (2) to gain my cup size back. After reading the side effects from others I'm getting a little scared because i have never used any form of birth control. If anyone has improved these two things that i want to improve could you please let me know how it went and how long after you started the pill did you see results. Side effects is also appreciated.

I had my Mirena inserted about 8 months ago, and although the insertion was so painful that I passed out for a few seconds afterward, I didn't really think I was experiencing any other issues afterward. But after about 3 months I was experiencing pretty bad acne. I went to a dermatologist and she told me that the Mirena may be causing it, and other women have had to have it taken out because of acne problems. I have now been on Doxycycline for the acne for 3 months. And no change. I have large red cysts on my chin and jawline. I can also feel acne on my scalp. I was happy with the reduced bleeding, and no cramps. I really haven't had problems with any other side effects, but the acne is bad, so I am calling tomorrow to have it removed.

This is unbelievable. Like most of you, I was told there were very few side effects with Mirena. I had a baby girl in May this year and was considering using the depo after birth since I had used it before with no major issues or dislikes (a little weight gain but, I always felt I was too thin before and the depo made me look curvy in all the right places so no complaints at that time which was about 4 years ago.) I did however, stop using the depo when I wanted to try for another baby and while off the depo I gained much more weight. Right before my due date this year, my midwife suggested I consider Mirena because unlike the depo, "it doesn't make you gain weight." Considering I had gained 30 lbs. during pregnancy and wanted to lose a total of about 45 after birth, I agreed to use Mirena as b/c. Well, I had my baby on May 10th, I immediately breastfed and on my two week postnatal visit I had already lost ALL of the pregnancy weight (30 lbs.!) I then scheduled the appt. to have the Mirena inserted on July twenty something. By that visit I had already lost 50 lbs. by breastfeeding alone...I was ecstatic! About four months later and with the Mirena in me, I am gaining weight, so far 8 lbs. and all of it on my belly, I look like I am about 5-6 months preg. This is especially depressing because only a couple months ago my husband was talking about how flat my stomach had gotten. I am also experiencing hair loss and spotting/bleeding after every intercourse. I am also considering having this thing removed! AHHHHHH!

I am 33 years old and have tried numerous forms of birth control. I have been taking yaz for 9 months and just decided to stop taking it after my last cycle. I have tried birth control pills before, but I really think the side effects were worse with this pill. I had absolutely NO sex drive and felt very apathetic and listliss all the time. I described to my husband that I felt "empty" inside. I was mildly depressed and experienced a great amount of anxiety. The only good thing was the light periods and I had great skin! I have since decided to try the nuvaring, but I am having some of the same problems with that one too. My doctor suggested it since it doesn't have to go through the liver like pills do, but it still sends these hormones into your blood stream. If you have problems with hormonal birth control methods, I highly suggest trying the copper iud or other non hormonal forms of control. The only bad thing about the copper iud was the heavy periods. I have also tried the mirena iud and didn't seem to experience as severe of emotional symptoms with that one, since it only contains progesterone. But for the first several months after you have it inserted you have a constant light bleeding. Plus it caused acne problems, which I never had to worry about before. But I would take those side effects over the emotional roller coaster I was on when taking the pill.

Ive been on it for 2 1/2 weeks so far ive noticed i cant sleep at night, my face is dry and kinda itchy which im hoping happens before it clears up. Some mood swings, but nothing i cant handle. I started taking femcon because after i had my son i bleed for 2 months straight, so my doctor put me on it 2 days later it stopped, it was amazing! Did the dryness of the face happen to anyone else? Or did your face just clear up? Ive never had acne problems till i had my son! Im hoping this pill clears it up !

I am so happy I found this site, I thought I was the only one. I always heard good things from other people but they must be like me, embarrassed to say anything because the side affects are so weird and embarrassing and personal. Every since I have had the Mirena I have been bleeding non stop,it has been about 2 months. It has been light bleeding but at times there are small clots. I am constantly sore down there I feel like I got hit something down there. I have no sex drive and even the thought of it makes me crying because of the pain already I can't imagine what it would be like if I did. I have been back and forth between having UTI's and yeast infection's I have only ever had a UTI before. I am constantly on edge I cant take care of my kids like I use to. I have let all my house work go, the cooking and my husband go bless him has picked up all the slack. He is an active duty Marine so it's not he doesn't have enough to do but he has to come home and do stuff that I would normally be doing but I have no interest in doing anything. I have put on wieght, my stomach is bloated all the time, I have acne problems that I have not had in a few years. My back constantly hurts, I feal light-headed a lot so I don't want to do much driving unless I know that I'm totally alert, after a lot of caffeine. My skin is really dry, I can't put enough lotion on and chap- stick. I think the thing that really bother's me the most is my mood swings, I have a history of depression and I was never told that Mirena could make it worse. I have had thoughts that I have not had in a very long time. Sometimes I have to just go to my room and not be around anyone because I don't want to start yelling at everyone. I am on 2 depression medications and for the first time I don't feel like it is enough. If anyone knows if there is anything that can be done to make sure that on a national level people are told and that the company take some responsibility let me know. I don't want anyone feeling the way I feel. I adore my children and my husband, but with this Mirena I don't want to be around any of them.HELP!!!

I had the mirena inserted on feb of this year. I the kind of person who always thinks positive, well that didn't help with the IUD. I was so excited about not having to worry about the daily pill and so on, 3 mo after the insertion I noticed that my hair was falling in great amounts, I know that hair is supposed to fall daily but this is ridiculous, all I have to do is run my hands through it and bulks fall out. I also have acne problems, something I never experienced before not even as a teen, I always bragged about my complexion, now it's a nightmare, also pain in both of my legs (that's kind of going away) but the worse thing I've discovered are some white dots on my upper back and other areas of my torso, the dots resemble freckles but they are white. I went to see my OB and she thinks that the side effects could be caused by the Mirena, for the dots on my back she sent me to a dermatologist because she is not sure it comes from the Mirena. Bottom line I'm freaking out and I am wondering if this was a terrible mistake and should've stayed with the pill. If anyone is experiencing similar symptoms please post it.

For all of the poor girls who are searching "mirena experiences" because you are looking for a sure thing contraceptive-
This site is only for people who have had BAD experiences. Read them all if you want, but take into consideration they are the 3%, or whatever number, that had problems. None of these women deserved it, asked for it, needed it, or wanted it, but unfortunately their bodies responded to it in such an ugly manor.

Here's my experience so far....Had it inserted 8/06/08. Insertion was fine. Felt that speculum more than I could feel the actual insertion of the mirena.
Slight cramping afterwards...not immediately-went home and for like 20 minutes had cramps lighter than my period cramps.
For the first week bled lightly, second week had an actual period, week three and week four just spotting. The doctor told me this can go on for up to six months...kinda worth it if you think about it.
No acne problems so far, my hair is fine (and trust me, if my hair was thinning, falling out, or anything like that I would take the mirena out!), muscles and joints feel like they did before pregnancy, still breastfeeding (I know that they say that the mirena will make you produce less breast milk-tell that to my breastfed 13 pound 24 inch long 2 month old. he would disagree)
My breasts are a little tender and at first I was slightly bloated (less than if I were on my period) but that has subsided. Abstained from sex for a month after insertion per my doctor's orders, so I will come back and post if there were any problems with that...NEXT WEEK! yay!
Know that I understand the side effects could show up later.

Now again, EVERYBODY will experience something different. We are interfering with nature. Birth control is one of the most unnatural things we could do to our body.

Again, since this site commonly comes up when searching the mirena, I want for women to know that it might work for them better than it did for others.

I'm a 30 year old woman and I've been taking Yasmin for 4 months now. I've been reading what people have been posting here and I'm wondering if I'm alone in having the following symptoms:
-severe breast pain for one day in the middle of my cycle, followed by mild breast pain until I get my period,
-painful cramps in the middle of my cycle,
-weird sharp internal vaginal pain, (sorry for the graphics, but especially during climax),
-acne problems,
-depression
The last two, I did see that people wrote about on here. I called my doctor today and I'm requesting a new pill. I thought that after a couple of months the symptoms would equalize, but after this last month, I decided I couldn't live with it. The breast pain especially has been very painful.

I have been taking BCP since I was 18. I started w/ Aleese, Yasmin, Orthotrycyclin-Lo, Ortho Evra and the last being Loestrin24Fe. The sad part is that I can't remember what/if any side effects I had while taking those prior to Loestrin24Fe. Unfortunately for me, I have managed to gain 30lbs in the last 5yrs and I cannot seem to get rid of it. Of course the gyno said it wouldn't have been the BCP, but I would like to believe I didn't make myself a fat ass. I was taking Loestrin24Fe for 2 years and can't say I noticed too big of a change while taking it other than the periods being shorter, but they were still very heavy. But my acne has started to get worse the past year. In May I went to the doctor for my migraine's and skin/hair (too oily). After running blood tests it showed my thyroid was pretty low and had room for improvement. I was prescribed Maxalt for my migraine's and 30mg of Armour (thyroid medicine). I went back at the end of June and we upped the Armour to 60mg because I haven't noticed a difference since taking it. She also suggested I switch my BCP to Yasmin as it's been known to help with acne problems. Today was my 2nd day on Yasmin....and obviously it's too soon to notice if/what side effects will bother me. I just wonder if maybe I should take a break from BCP all together and allow my body a chance to breathe. I really hate the thought of having that longer period again but I'm going to have it with Yasmin anyway unless I choose to start a new pack early every month (to keep same schedule as Loestrin24Fe). Advice would be helpful :)

I have had the Mirena for 1 1/2 yrs now. Within the past six months I have started to develop acne, all the while my period was starting to fade less and less every month. Now, the acne is severe and the periods are completely gone. I'm just wondering if this is all related. I have scheduled a appointment with a skin clinic, and also called my gyno. I am waiting on a reply from the nurse at the gynos office to see if I need to go on to the skin clinic, or if I just need to get this removed. I have never had more then a pimple or two on my face at one time. Now, I have them completely covering my hair line, almost like a rash.
