I am having very weird stomach pains. I've had Mirena since February 2008, and I'm always afraid I'm gonna get pregnant and either have to take it out and possibly have a miscarriage OR leave it in and the baby have defects. My husband and I were having sex yesterday and it was hurting real bad (which has recently become pretty common), then I coughed real hard and it felt like he penetrated my cervix. ??? I made him stop and ended up rolling around on the couch for 3 hours in agonizing pain after that, and I even threw up a lot! I didn't bleed or anything, and I can still feel the string in there but it still hurts today. Especially if any pressure is being exerted down there, in my stomach. If I run, if I cough, if I pee... it hurts. I want it taken out and NOW! Not to mention that I don't really have much of a sex drive anymore... Anyone else experiencing anything like this??? If so, or any advice.... please email ******

Today is Christmas day 2008. And a Merry Christmas to me ha!!!!!!!! I was given a prescription for the drug Levaquin on the 19th of December for a suspicion of pneumonia. The x rays done at the hospital found no evidence of pneumonia but my doctor wanted me to take it anyway because since I have asthma and my lungs sounded so bad I was told that I was at risk for developing any secondary infection that was out there. My husband filled the prescription on the 20th which was Saturday, took the first one of a seven day supply 500 mg tablets. About 4 hours after taking just one pill was awakened by severe and agonizing pain in both of my feet and my knees that I was writhing in pain. Since I have nerve damage in my feet anyhow I know what the pain that I normally experience feels like and instantly knew that this was not normal for me. When I thought that I finally might be able to walk I hobbled into the kitchen and dug the list of side affects out of the garbage (stupid me had not read them first.) I discovered that it was one of the side affects. Called the on call doctor in the morning since it was on the weekend and he stopped it immediately and put me on something else. I only took that one pill and since Saturday night every night I wake up in agonizing knee pain and I have never had pains in my knees before. The pain is so bad that I feel like I am ready to go on a morphine drip, or cut my legs off above the knees. Six days now from one pill, how much longer can this go on? I really feel bad for the people that contined to trust their doctors and continued with the full course of the medication and I realize that what I am experiencing is minor compared to what others are going through. This drug should come with a handout that says: Take this drug at a risk to your health!!!!!! Last night the pain lasted all night and I cried all night. Have to get through this day am entertaining for the holiday and have had no sleep. Actually getting afraid to go to sleep at this point.............D.

Okay...so I first posted the day I had Mirena inserted, Oct. 1. ( and had wished i found this site prior to installment)
It has now been two weeks. So lets up date:
I bled for only a few days, maybe 5 days tops. Which was great, I just thought " hmm maybe I'm a lucky one, maybe they put it in right, or maybe my body is handling it better than I though it would" But then 5 days later I started bleeding again.
Like I said, I have had this thing in for TWO WEEKS.. and I've had sex.... TWICE! I don't even want to have sex, no wonder it is so good for birth control.
The first time was great. My boy friend didn't feel anything, and was enjoyable for the both of us.
Needless to say, the second time was great... until it was over.
The second it was over, I was doubled over in pain. Literally, 30 seconds after sex, I had a severe hot flash, and felt like i couldn't breathe. I started shaking, and started crying. I felt like the " insertion part" was happening allllll over again. ( insertion, is miserable.. that alone makes me not want to recommend it to ANYONE) I thought i was going to pass out, and standing felt impossible, I couldn't even roll over. A few minutes later I stood up and went to the bathroom, I was nauseated and felt sick. I tried to pee, and couldn't. It just burned and felt like my whole body was trying to squeeze this thing out.
I went back to bed and layed there for about 45 minutes in agonizing pain. My fiance was so sad, he felt completely guilty that he "caused" the pain... he thinks it should be removed immediately. And so do I.
The one word to describe this pain was INTENSE.

To add, I have noticed dry, itchy skin. And my skin is now sooo fragile. My scalp is sooo itchy that when I scratch I actually bleed and scab.. it is DISGUSTING. And yes, my hair is slowly getting worse. Everyday I notice a little bit more shedding than usual. My complexion is not getting WORSE, but the few pimples I have are deep, painful, and are actually scaring. Never before did I scar.

I also feel the extreme fatigue, and occasional mood swings, I will admit, I have Always had an attitude but this is a little more than even I am willing to except.
I have not gained any weight, but it's only been TWO WEEKS and, I have intentionally weighed my self everyday... and I am now fluctuating 6 lbs a day in water weight. My belly is 23/7 bloated. The only time I am not bloated is after the first pee in the morning for about 45 minutes, and then it starts allllllll over. People have noticed my fingers are chubbier, and are sore. For 2 days my toes and feet were a light blue-ish color... that "symptom" was enough to make me WANT to go to the E.R. but I opted not, as there was no discomfort.
A major discomfort, like i said was sex, and the random times throughout the day when I bend over or wiggle into a chair... it just feels like it is STABBING the right side of my body. There is truly no comfortable way to sit without favoring my right side.
It is weird, painful, and is getting really old.
I tried calling my doctors all day today, and it was still left on their " night time recording" so, I am a little angry.
I thought about pulling it out myself, but this time I read " REAL PEOPLE INFORMATION" and apparently its not a good idea. SO DON'T, if your thinking about it. lol.
Anyone that has had it removed, is it painful? Does it feel anything like the insertion? I am scared to death.. and I am a little upset that i have to continue to wait to get through to my nurse practitioner. I just want this to be over with. The last thing I need is to have it get " lost" like so many other women.
I tried, but I'm listening to my instincts, and this just isn't right.

I just want to post my experience as it correlates with others. I was on a very low dose of Simvastatin - 5mg - and would have never thought this would have been the issue.

I have been suffering with knee pain for over 18 months. I had to have surgery for cartilage removal and I believe had I not been on Simvastatin my knees cartilage would not have been so brittle and torn. The doctors seemed kind of surprised I was not recovering so quickly after surgery. I never seemed to recover as much as I thought I would have.

Then this June 08 I installed some window air conditioners in my home while I was still taking Simvastatin and I believe I have torn my other knee cartilage. This is what caused me to examine what has changed and why a 50 year old would be having all these issues. My ancestors did not have all these issues.

I started to research Simvastatin. I took myself on and off of Simvastatin twice because I was not certain if this was the culprit. When I started to take Simvastatin on the second pass I had agonizing pain in my knees. I knew. I could hardly walk.

I have discontinued the Simvastatin, my knees have quieted down but I know I must have some damage. I hope is it not permanent.

I am planning to contact my pharmacy to determine when I started with Simvastatin so I can try to time line when I began to have difficulties.

I hope this helps someone else. I do not like being a guinea pig…

I suffer from cluster headaches as well as several other ailments (Doctors say..."we know it's something we just can't figure it out"...sigh). With my latest bout of cluster headaches they decided to put me on prednisone..60 mg for 4 days...30 for 3 days..etc. until I tapered down. Worked great! Headaches went away and I was feeling wonderful (terribly agitated but physically wonderful) until I went off of it (headaches returned with a vengeance. They immediately started me on a second round of Prednisone at 60 per day. Third day, on this second round, I went to get out of bed and BAM!!! fell straight to the floor. I had absolutely no muscle control below my waist...NONE! Laid there on the floor for about a half hour (trying to get up as I flailed around). Managed to finally raise to a somewhat standing position. Walked (shuffled) down the hallway to the bathroom to try and use the toilet. Went to sit down on it and promptly fell wedging myself between the toilet and the wall...(a disturbing visual). A relative helped me (how humiliating) out from my predicament and we immediately called the doctor. I was told it was not the prednisone but a flaring of my underlying vascular/soft tissue disorder and to stop prednisone. Stopped prednisone, next morning went to get up and low and behold I could stand but I had excruciating pain shooting into my hips, knees and ankles which once again made me fall (from agonizing pain). Day three off of prednisone and the excruciating pain upon rising is better but far from over. Currently, extreme muscle fatigue...so weak my poor little muscles won't even quiver. Headaches are back. Red swollen face...ack!!!...what a nightmare.

Two days ago I took out my third molars (wisdom teeth), afterwards I took a prescription strength 600mg Ibuprofen with no side effects. I took another pill 6 hours later, and I have been having the worst upper stomach pain, much worse than the tooth ache ever was since then. I have been waking up with agonizing pain every hour for the past two nights, and I can't even take Tylenol for my tooth pain now since my stomach is so messed up (I tried and it cause horrible stomach pain).

So on top of having to treat the stomach problem, I can't take any pain medication for my teeth and I'm just miserable. I'm 25 years old and have never had stomach problems before, the first night I thought I was poisoned or something and I was dieing. I think the small label on the bottle that says "if it causes upset stomach, take it with crackers or bread" needs to be replaced with "it doesn't matter what you take it with, it can cause much more pain that you have ever imagined." Because it actually doesn't matter if you take it with bread, or inject it to yourself, the function of ruining the stomach lining is because of it's anti-inflammatory chemicals, not direct contact with stomach.

I read about it now, and apparently the deaths from Ibuprofen and Aspirin (anti-inflammatory pain medications) caused by gastrointestinal problems is about as many as deaths by HIV-Aids in USA*. I don't see any Ibuprofen awareness rallies though. I wish I had time to sue someone because I really really want to.

I have taken several rounds of Levaquin, and recently Avelox. After taking 2 rounds of levaquin for a sinus infection last spring I experience many of the myalgia type symptoms, and was tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lyme's disease, all negative... eventually felt better. I never attributed to the medication. Last fall I again had a sinus infection levaquin again, 2 rounds of 5 days in February, and then Avelox early April. I have never been sicker in my life. I have had many of the CNS effects, and the joint and muscle pain. Agonizing pain that I had never experienced. worse than passing a kidney stone. I am feeling a bit better, and heading back to work today after being unable to go for 10 days. I have also developed some eye problems, that are being managed with drops. I am trying to eat naturally and drinking lots of water. I pray this will go away, and want to warn everyone not to take this medication! Still have back and hip pain, pain in my feet, insomnia, headaches, and anxiety...but is not as severe as 10 days ago. My prayers are with all of you suffering from the side effects of these dangerous drugs.

Are you guys for real? In reading through the side effects blogs it really reads like it is all the same person writing, maybe someone trying to beat up on the competition or something. It did scare me out of letting my 24 year old son take it for severe sinus infections, however and I just hope that two days of a 750mg dose per day doesn't show forth the negative effects in the days to come!! Please tell me it's not as bad as it sounds!

My Mirena Removal....
So i posted here a few weeks ago after I found this site. I had EVERY side effect listed and was so freaked out that i immediately made an appointment for removal.
For those of you reading and wondering what the removal is like..
Well, NOTHING like the insertion. I was so so nervous and it was over before we actually started. The DR was surprised that i was back in his office to have this removed. He then proceeded to do an ultrasound to be sure it was placed properly before removal. And yes, all was OK on the position of it. I explained to him my reasons and he looked at me like he had never heard this before. I honestly can not imagine with all the women he sees that NONE of them have complained. But...as I was getting dressed afterwards, I took a good look in his office. There was Mirena literature ALL over the place. In fact, that was the ONLY thing he was advertising. Not to mention...they made me pay up front with the insertion back in Nivember...billed my insurance and I still have yet to receive my reimbursement. Oh yeah, and that...they charge more than the actual Mirena costs, then they bill your insurance for the price they know they will pay and the DR then makes about $150 profit. Nice.
Ok, back to my side effects post Mirena. The removal was not painful at all. I did spot for about a week- nothing too heavy but it was clotty and def there.
A couple of days after the removal it felt like I was coming out of my skin something terrible. I figured this was my body adjusting to the lack of hormones. I also had some headaches.
It has now been 2 weeks and the spotting has disappeared. I also can see the bloating of my stomach is starting to go away. It looked like I was about 4 mos preggo while I was on it. I also have an increased sex drive. And sleep-- well let me tell you, I have not slept this good in a very long time. I am actually sleeping more than 6 hours now and the night sweats have also discontinued.
I can't believe EVERY time I come to this site and look up Mirena ALL the people that have posted their experience as being negative. Yet, the DR looks at me like I am crazy! I have been seeing him for years and I have never complained about something like this. I really am so happy that I have it out and wish I would have done my research on this prior to insertion (which was one of the most painful things ever!)
So..for those of you out there that are either contemplating having it inserted...I say NO WAY. And for those of you out there that are nervous about the removal or not sure..I SAY YES, DO IT! For our bodies to be reacting this way, it is clear to me that it should not be inside of us. Listen to your bodies...they really do speak to you and let you know when something is not right. Forget about the DR saying it is safe or he has not heard of any of these side effects...YOU be the judge.
Good luck! And I promise it gets better once you get that lil' demon out!

I took Levaquin for 10 days for a sinus infection. On the sixth day, my knees began to ache. Since I stand all day at my job, I thought it was job-related. By the 10th day I had terrible pain in my knees and pain in my calf muscles. After 3 days of agonizing pain in my knees and calves, and having to hold onto to furniture in order to walk, I called the dr. to relay my symptoms. The nurse said it was a side effect of Levaquin. . .sore tendons, aching joints. When I asked if there was anything I could do, they said it would just have to work itself out of my system. They would mark it in my file. I asked how long the side effects would last. . answer. . .4 to 5 days. It is now 14 days since I took the last pill, and the pain is just starting to subside. However, I'm still having difficulty getting up after sitting, and have weakness in my knees. I am 63, have a little arthritis, and now feel this medication should not be given to anyone that has slight joint problems. The pain has been 10 times worse than any arthritis pain that I have had. I have stepped up my anti-inflammatory medicine in the last 5 days. This may be why the pain is lessening, also. I agree that if I had been able to read the side effects warnings before paying for this prescription, I never would have taken it. I just hope these side effects are not permanent. You are always told to finish your medicications. . .however, in this case, I wish I had.
