I have asthma and have been prescribed prednisone several times for it. Every time i take it i break out in an awful acne looking rash all over my arms and my chest and sometimes even my face. it doesn't start until about 3 days after i have started the medicine and it doesn't go away for about 2 weeks and it itches the whole time. I told my doctors that every time they would try to prescribe it and they did not believe me they said no one could be allergic to prednisone but it has happened to me 6 times now and it has never happened before i had prednisone or on many other medicine since then.i finally got them to switch the steroid to a different kind but every kind seems to do it. i had to refuse steroids the last time i was in the hospital for my asthma they just would not accept that i could not take the medicine.

I just finished a 10 day (4xday) prescription of Flagyl (250 mg) prescribed by my Gastro doctor for treatment of (SIBO) Severe Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Two days after finishing Flagyl I broke out in hives all over my body and my upper eyelids were very swollen. Now my dermatologist has me on Zyrtec and Prednisone. Has anyone broken out with hives and had swollen eyes from taking Flagyl?

Last night I woke up burning all over and about to explode from the firey heat. Made it to the bathroom where my husband found me, eyes fixed and unresponsive...I was worse than comatose...I was dying. He talked to me and keep me "with him" and was telling me he was going to call EMS when finally I began to comer out of it. My eyes were fixed and I could respond to him. I had turned a gray color.I will never take it again. I, in reality nearly died, not from discomfort, but from a whole system shut down. I had only taken 500Mg at bedtime for about a week. No More for me...ever!!! jcw in San Antonio

I took one pill on the day the Doctor prescribed them for a urinary tract infection, and had severe leg cramping to the point where I could not walk, lay, or move without major pain. I couldn't have anything touch my legs without being in agony. It lasted hours. Likewise, several days after, I have tingling in both hands when sleeping at night.
I stopped taking it immediately. Last year, I also had a urinary tract infection, and forgot the name of the antibiotic I was prescribed, but believe it is the same as this time which is SMZ-TMP DS, and had the same leg cramping and tingling in my hands, but at first did not know it was a side effect of the medication. So, I suffered through severe leg cramps, and tingling hands for days until I finally called the Doctor, and he said it was strange but was an allergic reaction.
I've had frequent urinary tract infections throughout my life, and never had an issue with antibiotics prescribed up until this one came along. I think it's dangerous and needs to be re-evaluated.

Unfortunately I also experienced such side effects from Levaquin to the degree that I feel I was poisoned. I was prescribed Levaquin April 2004 and a week later developed a 2" x 1" oval rash on my front hip area and had severe muscle aches and joint pain. My doctor prescribed a fungus cream for the rash (what???) and ran extensive blood and urine tests. The rash began multiplying daily until it covered half my entire body.
More tests (scared me to death -testing for Lupis, HIV, Hepatitis, etc.)
After all negative, he suggested I see a dermatologist and an allergist.
Rash worsened, could not sleep at all, not sure if it was from constant itch?? Non of the prescriptions from the dermatologist worked but a sample packet of "sarna or sarno?" helped dull the itch. Now it was a month since I started the Levaquin. A friend drags me to the ER. They actually get a cop in there to ask me if I have been beaten...um, no...I did it to my self..All the itching has caused me to scratch myself to the point of bruising all over. They ran a few tests and came running in with 2 doses of benedryl shots...said my eosinophils level was off the charts and that I had been having an alergic reaction to "something". Ah!! (duh!!) So I go home and search the internet... severe red rash, itching, insomnia, muscle aches, joint pain, allergic reaction....what comes up...levaquin levaquin and more levaquin. How did my own doctor who prescribed this to me not realize that this was an allergic reaction??? Most of my symtoms subsided 6 weeks later (after filling the scrips from the er for benadryl, prednisone and something else) but it was truly 6 weeks of hell and for a while there, I did not think it was ever going to end. Hope this info helps anyone who thinks they may be having a reaction to levaquin.

1500mg/day for 2 yrs now and it's been a lonnnnng road with this flushing and itching. The typical avoidance foods, hot showers, spicy foods..etc..all help to aoid the side effects. However, if you still get that flushing/itching effect, take some antihistamine medication. Benedryl works, although it will make you drowsy, but it's worth it ! It relieves the itching !
Why does this happen ? it's NOT niacitic poisoning like some on this site suggest. Niaspan causes vasodilation of your the blood vessels in your skin. This causes your mast cell to increase thus triggering a production of histamine in your skin receptors. This is what causes the unbearable itching to occur. It is completely harmless, however, it can be un-bearable at times when the flushing/itching become severe. So taking an ANTI-histamine works well. Time on the medication helps. Reducing the dosage may help as well, however, you will most likely see a drop in your HDL levels by 5-7% for every 500mg drop in dosage.
Hang in there, hopefully big Pharm will come up with a new drug to increase HDL.. I know they are working on it as we speak, but may take a few more years.

I was prescribed Levaquin on 4 Sept 06 for what my doctor diagnosed as a prostate infection. I took the first 500 mg pill on Monday, Labor Day and by Tuesday the symptoms were subsiding. I THOUGHT I HAD FOUND A WONDER DRUG! The doctor gave me a month supply, that's right, 30 pills and 1 refill. I took the pill for 6 days and by Saturday afternoon, I thought I was going to die. I started shaking uncontrolably, I was sweating, and my heart was beating out of my chest. I laid down for about 20 minutes and my wife got scared and called 911. I was transported to the ER and the doctor there said I was "in the sun too long" and I was diagnosed with a severe sunburn. I asked the doctor in the ER if I was having an alergic reaction to the Levaquin, she stated "no" it was just a sever sunburn. I took another 500mg Levaquin on Sunday and by Monday I was having severe muscle pain and again, felt so weak I thought I was dying! I called the doctor who prescribed the Levaquin and told him I was having a severe reaction, he stated he really felt that I should finish the medication! I stopped taking Levaquin on Monday, 11 Sept 06 and I am STILL feeling the side effects of taking only 8 pills!! This drug needs to be taken off the market NOW!

I am alright when I take 500mg of Niaspan at bed time but if I increase it to 1000 or as my Dr wants 1500, I have a severe reaction. It does not happen right away but about 4 hours after I take it. The itching is unbearable. I was told that over the counter items like Benedril(sp) would help but it takes a long time if it does help. I do not get these reactions every night, sometimes once or twice a week. I was told to take an aspirin or Advil before taking the niaspan and that seems to lesson the attack. I will say when I took the 1000mg it doubled my HDL(good) cholesterol but I don't think the unbearable itching is worth it. I have been told by my Alergy Doctor that there is something to take to prevent the attacks but he could not remember what it was. He did say that it is not an alergic reaction but a cardiac reaction. I wish I could find the remedy because it has helped raise my HDL dramatically.

Within a week of taking 20mgs of Lisinopril, I developed intense itching around my lower back, then in my hands in feet. Within 24 hours, I started having tingling, aching, and deep pain in different areas of my body, but most intense in my left arm and hand. I also had tingling in different areas of my body, headache, neck and back pain. I could not sleep and was starting to get depressed, as well as stressed. I called my doctor, but he thought I was suffering from nicotine withdrawal. I had stopped smoking two weeks before. Last night I couldn't bear it anymore (I had not slept for 5 nights due to the pain and itching), and went to the emergency room. The doctor on call confirmed I was having a alergic reaction. The on call doctor gave me various medication to fight the reaction, and pain medication. I slept all day today, and feel almost normal again. If this happens to you, don't wait a week, see a docter immediately. Don't suffer the pain me and my family did.

I am a 42 year old woman and have never had an alergic reaction or bad reaction to any medicine my whole life. I started taking omnicef for bronchitis, and on the fifth day began having chronic diarrhea, which I did not equate with the drug at all. Today is my 10th (last day) on the prescription and I am just now realizing the cause of my extreme discomfort and weakness, which I thought must be a horrible virus!

I took Levaquin for UTI after the first 7 days my body was very sore, I thought is was from the UTI. The UTI went away but came back 4 days later. Again I took the Levaquin 2 days in my body hurt really bad but I kept taking the Leviquin by the end of 7 days of a 30 day supply I could hardly walk. I could not get up or down stairs without help, I had numb arms, I could not even open a bottle of water. There was to many other things wrong with my body to name. My doctor said chances are it was not the Laviquin. To any one who will listen to me STOP taking this medicine NOW!!!! I felt like I was dying. My life and enegy was literaly being sucked out of me. I took about 2 weeks for me to walk good enough to go to work and it is now about 6 months and I am still tired and and weak sometimes. I was 41 and a very strong and heathly man. I am not alergic to anything. This is not an alergic reaction this was leagally being poisoned by the drug company who makes this stuff.
Again I say STOP TAKING THIS DRUG !!!
YOUR LIFE AND HEATH DEPEND ON IT.
If we don't warn people who will?

About 2 and 1/2 months ago I went to an urgent care facility since I felt like I was suffocating. I am a long time smoker (30 years) and have not had any problems with breathing accept for the occasional morning cough. Long story short, the doctor after hearing my breathing and taking 2 xrays said "you have a pocket of infection in your lung and COPD". I didn't realize it was that quick and easy to diagnose COPD and thought there were more extensive tests to prove that, but I went along with the doctor. The doctor prescribed Advair, an antibiotic, ProAir HFA (albuterol pump rescue inhaler), a decongestant and prednisone. I thought that was an extreme amount of medication but the doctor said she was being proactive. After a couple albuterol breathing treatments and a shot of steroids at the urgent care center I was on my way.
I finished the treatments of antibiotics and steroids as prescribed, but I never took the decongestant (did not want to over-medicate myself). Immediately after starting Advair my joints ached and I felt over all like I had the flu. With my 1 weeks checkup with the doc I mentioned this and she just smiled. About a week after that the achy joints starting easing up, but I started cramping in different muscles. For instance one week I would have a dull cramping in my leg that was persistent during the day and worsened at night. Then the leg stopped cramping, then the lower part of my back started in to a point it was hard to get out of bed, walk or bend over. Then when that stopped something else started up. Then during the last two weeks that I was on Advair I was having periodic chest pains, tightness in my chest, (once again) difficulty breathing, and my vision started to go (blurring)...that with the lower back pain. I am almost 50 years old and have been in excellent health my whole life, and honestly I have never felt as bad as I did while on Advair.
I stopped taking Advair 6 days ago. No, I did not call and ask the doctor's advice because I knew what the doc would say. The first day after quitting Advair I had restricted breathing so I used the rescue inhaler once. The breathing issue became better during the remainder of the day. Slowly the cramping in my body and chest eased up. Today (6 days later) my vision is back to what it was, no chest pains, occasional restricted breathing and will use the rescue inhaler during those times.
I think it's too early to know the long lasting affects of Advair, but at this stage in my life (unless I am worse off with my breathing than I am right now) I don't care to use the medication.
