I had Mirena put in August of 2007 (my daughter was 3 1/2 years old and my son was nearing 1). At first I had a lot of discomfort and then the side effects began to set in: headaches, breakouts, itchy face, depression, no sex drive, extreme fatigue, and I think weight gain. My periods were pretty light but they lasted for weeks. I started being extremely moody and just felt rage boiling in me more and more each day. Now, I did end up switching my epilepsy medication about two weeks after I had the Mirena put in, so I can't be sure that these are all results of Mirena. Luckily, things started to change a little after the 3-month mark, my complexion was almost perfect, I had fewer headaches, I was more up-beat, my anger let up considerably. My sex drive never really came back, my periods got shorter but they were still like 2 weeks long and I got bad pms whereas I never really got it before. Even though I wasn't a raving bitch anymore, I still seemed to be more at risk for mood swings.

I'm now nearing the 6-month mark of having Mirena put in. The last few weeks I've been plagued with cold sores (I've had them ever since I was a kid, but I haven't really had any bad ones in the past 5 years) and my complexion has gone to crap overnight. I'm starting to get the angry feelings back and have started picking fights with my husband again. My pms symptoms seem to be getting worse every month and I seem to have more frequent fatigue and headaches.

My question is, has anyone had a recurrence like this? It seems like it's all happening again, but I can't be sure if it's the Mirena or not. I don't know if my short fuse has to do with the Mirena, my other medicine, or perhaps just long winter days with the kids giving me cabin fever. It seems like the same thing is happening again and I want to know if any others had their irritability continue for more than six months or had it reappear after it had waned for awhile. The past five years have been filled with pregnancy, post partum changes and different birth controls, so I'm not even sure what is normal anymore!

Only now after the break up of my marriage and the begining of a new relationship,do i realise that something was just not right, when my new man was saying exactly the same things as my ex...terriable mood swings, constant angry feelings, scarring acne , constant tiredness and general body aches and pains, sore breasts, a slow but steady weight gain of nearly 4 stones inspite weight watchers etc and depression. Was on seroxat for a time until i saw a programme that highlighted side effects of that and so have lived with depression for years. A visit to ER with heart palputations which i thought was a heart attack. Panix attacks....I dont know why i suddenly thought that the mirena might have something to do with all this, thought i was going crazy , especially after my husband left me ...i had it removed last week and already feel better. Lost 4Lb in 5 days. Today i feel a little tired but still pleased its out. There is too much thats happened to me in the last 5 years for this to be a coincidence. My gp had no hesitation on removing it ....its too early to tell what will happen, but already i feel more peaceful...

I'm so depressed on Desogen. Moody, angry, feelings of doom, and no energy. I also have weird freckling/darkening of my face, which I'm told is called "melasma". Fabulous, I not only feel bad; I look bad too. Can't wait to ditch this evil pill.

I've been off Yasmin since August 24, 2005. Over 100 days later, I finally got my natural period! I was beginning to worry even though periods are no cup of tea for me, but I was feeling soooo bloated I thought I'd pop. I hope to rid of this bloated feeling once my period ends, but we'll see... I'm, of course, not sure that will happen.

I have not gained a lot of weight since going off the pill, although I am carrying 1 to 2 lbs. more. I weigh myself daily and if it starts to go up, I reign in what I eat. But I think the weight gain is due to the bloatedness. And, I have not found it to be very easy during the holidays to "reign" eating.

The major reason I decided to go off Yasmin was because of intense angry feelings day in and day out. I would have never known to associate these feelings with Yasmin but I kept seeing that recurring symptom on this forum. I had been on Alesse before and it didn't make me angry, instead I was very anxious (panic attacks) with that one. These BCPs definitely wreak havoc on the emotions.

Last weekend, I started to feel really angry again and I thought "great, even going off this pill hasn't helped." Now I realize it was PMS. I hope to continue recovering from this last phase of trying BCP. I mainly was on it to regulate periods. Without the pill, I normally have irregular and VERY heavy periods with clotting. With the pill, the periods are soooo much better and, with my doctor's recommendation, I was even skipping them depending on my schedule (by continuous use of the pill and stopping for the "week" at my convenience). I will miss that.

Since I am now almost 48, hopefully I will not be having them much longer. I expect menopause will be a welcome friend for me.
