Just started taking lisinopril (2nd dose today, 20 mg) for HBP. I have had HBP for about 15 years. I was taking HCTZ, a diuretic, plus atenelol. That stuff makes you feel miserable, depressed, paranoid along with major constipation and very low potassium blood levels. I changed doctor and he has a completely different approach. So far my only side effect from lisinopril has been slight weakness in my lower jaw and the nagging dry cough. I guess you have to get used to these and other side effects. Anything is better than being depressed. Maybe the side effects will lessen as time goes by. I'm optimistic.

I've been taking atenolol 6 months now and my basic complaint is the coughing. I have to practically sit up in bed at night. At first I thought it was just the usual summertimer postnasal drip causing the cough so I put up with it. Have to take ricoloas or some kind of drops all day to keep the cough down. I've heard other pills like this all come with the cough. If there is another that DOESN'T maybe someone can get back to me a nd let me know.
I have a doctor who isn't very communicative but if I complain about something he does what he can to try something else. This time, however, I'm doing my own research and so far have come up with zip as to any replacement. In fact, my blood pressure isn't much better. Was in the office for another reason the other day and it read 138/100.
Thanks!

My Side effects: major heart palpitations, numb/tingling hands almost every morning upon awakening, fatigue, thinning hair, bloating/weight gain. I am 43 yrs old, not overweight & in good health other than my BP. I was on atenelol for about 8 yrs & switched to lisinopril aprx 5-6 yrs ago. HBP & heart attack run in my family (dad & brother both had heart attacks at age 40). The heart palpitations (I call them summersaults in my chest) have caused me to go to the urgent care & doctor more than once. Have had EKGs twice in last 3 yrs, wore heart monitor, etc. Said I have irregular heart beat, but nothing to really worry about. I started on 5mg, but BP continued to increase. Raised to 10 mg, but same thing. Now up to 20 mg & BP is finally better (but not low) at 120/86. I HATE being tired all the time as I'm the kind of person who is always going. I'm going to talk w/Dr. & see about switching to something else again... Thanks to all for sharing!

I have been taking Toprol-XL 50 mg for the past two weeks instead of Altenolol 50 mg. I have been having tight chest, pain in my throat area and lower teeth. I did not have these effects when I was taking Atenolol 50 mg. My cardiologist changed me to Toprol-XL because Atenelol might have triggered by depression again. I had a heart attack 12 years ago. I also take Linisiprol. I cannot walk more than 2 or 3 blocks in a regular pace when I get the side effects listed above. Is this a regular side effect?

I have been on Bupropion SR for about a month now. I had severe depression stemming from past incidents that I was unable to get over on my own. I started at 150 mg once a day and the first 2 days I felt nothing. The third day I caught myself grinning and laughing! However, on the 5th day, my doctor upped it to 150 mg twice a day. After the fourth day of that I started feeling irritable and tired. After a week of it I started feeling dizzy, nausea, anxiety, shaky, and just generally weird. I went to a different doctor and told her the symptoms and she reduced me to 100 mg twice a day. The dizziness is gone but the irritability is still present although manageable if I just think before I speak. I also have lost about 5 pounds. I notice that some days I have no appetite and others I am ravenous. The worst side effect so far is the anxiety. I have never had it before and now when the least little event or conflict is present I start getting a churning feeling in my stomach and restlessness. As for insomnia, I do stay up too late but once I force myself into bed I pass right out. I get sleepy around 2:00pm which is when I take the second pill and sometimes can't stop myself from falling asleep at my computer at work. My dreams were more intense and lucid when I was on 300mg a day but they seem to have gone back to normal now.

Well I'm glad I'm not alone here.I had a light stroke a year ago and the doc's got me on LisinoprilHCTZ,micardis, clonidine, and atenelol.I have aproblem with adema(swelling around the ankles and such). My Lisinopril was 20/25 mg.He told me to double my intake to get rid of this adema. But isnt lisinopril one of the meds that causes the swelling? So I have severe adema,a muscle soreness that wont go away, severe indigestion, a dry cough, and I feel weak all the time, with no energy. Why dont these doctors look up the side effects of these meds and prescribe responsibly

Im 54 and already on atenelol and moduretic for Hypertention, I also have type 2 diabetes ,my Doctor started me on Lisinopril he said to protect my Kidneys. I woke up the 2nd day of taking these pills 5mg and the back of my hand and arm was red. I was very tired and didn't want to do anything. This morning , the 3rd day I woke up feeling fine and ate 1/2 choc cookie with walnuts on top, Ive eaten walnuts all my life with no problem, suddenly I felt my lips and face swelling and tongue, and my hands were burning really bad and I developed large welts on my legs and arms I had heart palpitations and got really scared. I ate some cherrios and drank some water and calmed down and the symptoms went away as fast as they had come. I found this website and will be calling my Doctor today.
