All I can say is wow.

I just had the Mirena removed this morning, because it hurt while having sex. (Nothing like a sharp pain in there to spoil the mood). Also and I may be the only one who feels like this, but I really disliked not having a period at all. Just didn't sit right with me.

My doctor was very understanding, and he said that the Mirena seemed like it wasn't all it was supposed to be. He said that their practice is removing more and more of them because of complaints about the side affects, pain during sex, moodiness, and others.

I decided to look and see what the "other" side effects were, and what I am reading is such a relief. I have been having severe facial acne, and back acne. Low sex drive (went from three times a week to once every two weeks) I have felt really tired and moody, but I thought maybe that was due to having a 18 month old daughter. I am so happy that I may be myself again soon...and happy that I am not going crazy. I will definitely tell everyone I know to stay away from Mirena.

My girlfriend has been taking Quasense for 6 weeks now. She went on it because her period was all whacked out. The first couple of days I noticed the Extreme Mood swings, and Severe Nausea in the morning. The Nausea went away after a week or so. She complained of being dizzy is uncomfortable with the acne she is getting and weight she has gained. She is getting depressed and feeling tired all the time. We are busy people always doing something, But she just doesn't have the energy anymore. As the weeks went by her moods are getting worse and she is having extreme stomach cramps and began spotting. Which shouldn't be happening for another two months. This Pill sucks. I'm tired of seeing her in so much discomfort.

Hello, I started taking 100mgs twice a day three weeks ago for severe acne on my back and shoulders. (I am 40 have adult acne or back acne that never goes away) I just wanted to mention though that all of a sudden I noticed DEPRESSION and it took me awhile to realize that the Doxycycline was the only thing that was new. I have had bad depression before and am very familiar with it but it was completely gone. So, I am happy to see that maybe this med has caused others to get depression too. The nausea is nothing compared to mood disorders. My doctor said to stop taking it.

I have been on Yasmin for 4 years now and I only recently started to question if some of the things that I have been experiencing are related to this pill. After reading your comments here, I'm more convinced then ever! I am a relatively healthy 31 year right now but for over a year now I have had a terrible ongoing ache in the back of my right thigh, just above my knee. I went to a vein specialist who just wanted to inject me to reduce the vein and "hoped" that it would help resolve the pain. He said that I had reticular veins and that they can be painful but as I understand it, you can get pain in your deep veins, which can result in deep vein thrombosis and even pulmonary embolisms (very life threatening). I have also had terrible ongoing headaches that last me 3 days at least once per month. I've always suffered from migraines so I didn't necessarily connect these headaches to the pill. I have absolutely ZERO sex drive. It's like I have to force myself to do it and it fills me with anxiety to even "gear up" for it. I have vaginal dryness, which can be very frustrating during foreplay and painful during sex. I had previously always been pleased that Yasmin resolved my 10 + year battle with painful cystic back acne. I have beautiful, clear skin on my back since I started taking Yasmin. I have also experienced fairly normal periods (for me). I used to have debilitating cramps and periods so heavy that I would wear a tampon and double my pads (with wings) so that I could live through the first part of the day at work without completely breaking through and bleeding through my pants. They would last for 5 - 7 days but with the pill I have more normal periods, manageable cramps, minor bloating, and still a heavy flow but not nearly as bad as before. I have always had good cholesterol levels and low triglycerides until 4 years ago when I started the pill. Since then I have had 2 blood tests where my cholesterol has skyrocketed and my triglycerides are triple the "normal" range. I eat healthier now then ever before and I regularly exercise as well so I cannot explain my cholesterol change, nor can my doctor (after showing a food diary of mostly fruits, veggies, limited whole grains, lean meat and optimal water). He told me to "go on a low carb diet" and "stay away from "sugars". I can't explain it either, I am always thirsty. I drink almost a gallon of water a day. I have this constant craving for a beverage and dryness if I'm not consistently sipping on water. My eyes are always dry, so dry in fact that it makes me feel tired or like I just want to close them to give them a break. I just started using eye drops, which has helped. Also, I'm tired, very very tired. It's summer so my energy is better only because I force myself to go workout, which always makes me feel better. I must say though, all in all, I have some concerning symptoms that seem to be prevalent throughout the blog but I've also had some positive effects from Yasmin. My concerns and your comments however are enough to take myself off the pill (Yasmin and all others) to try and live with my natural hormones instead of the synthetic in the pill. I think the potential risks outweigh the rewards. Thank you all for sharing and helping me in my decision making process.

Wow! Mirena hasn't been good to 90% of the people who posted. I am 21 yrs old. I have a 10 months old, and I had Mirena placed in November 2007. It wasn't a painful procedure. I did cramp and had spotting in the beginning. Long periods seem to come in spells for me though. At first I went 3 months without a period. By the third month, I was either bleeding too much, or wanted sex really bad. The bleeding stopped, so I was ok. Then it started again and was consistent for about a month. Whenever it stops I have sex, and within two says spotting starts. I also experience unpredictable bleeding. I think it's going to end, but it gets heavier. Buying tampons all the time is getting expensive. Not knowing what absorbency to buy is very frustrating. I can't go to the doctor much because MEDICAID will only pay to have it removed. I talked to a nurse and she said the spotting may be caused by a low grade infection. I can't wait till my benefits kick in at work, so I can see my doctor! The nurse did suggest taking a round of antibiotics. Since doing so, the bleeding stopped. I honestly think it's the hormones. I'm taking antibiotics my dermatologist prescribed to balance my hormones. I'm thinking about having it removed. I know I'm not good at taking pills, that shot made me gain 30 lbs when I tried it, and I won't go near the patch. Maybe an older mom who has experienced Mirena can give me a little advice. I'll be waiting for your response.

Thanks in advance :)

I have had my mirena removed 1 week & a day ago....the demon is gone. Oh my God, I can't believe how back to normal I feel. I thought it would take much longer if not forever. My constant bloat has improved, no more sweats & hot flashes, my back acne is gone & my face/malsma has cleared up...w/ help from bleaching cream. There is hope for all feeling desperate. I am soooooooo glad to have found this site. I, like many, many of you, also thought there was no way in the world all my symptoms were being caused by the Mirena IUD, because all of my doctors have told me time and time again that the level of hormones being released by this thing is SOOOOOOOO tiny that it couldn't possibly be causing all that's happening. I had the Mirena inserted in February 2007... by August of 2007 I started experiencing hives all over my body that began as a burning/tingling in my hands and feet, and within a matter of a few weeks had spread to my entire body. I now have had this on-going rash (hives) that never has fully gone away for the past 9 months. My doctors all could not tell me at all what was causing it. I have been taking antihistamines like crazy to keep it "in check" but some days even those do no good. My grandma and mother kept telling me to get this IUD out, but I told them it couldn't possibly be from it due to what the doctors had told me and because I'd had it in since February and didn't get hives until August. However, I truly believe this MUST be the cause, as it's the only new thing in my life during that time period... I've always used the same soaps, ate the same foods, and NEVER have I had any outdoor allergies. It MUST be the Mirena. In addition to the hives, I CANNOT LOSE WEIGHT, have stayed at 174 pounds since having this inserted. I have tried exercise, dieting, etc. and notice NO changes. Due to the ongoing hives my body is going through a constant fight against this allergy, and as a result, my neck has a giant cluster of enlarged lymph nodes that will NOT go down in size. Probably because my body never gets rid of this foreign body so it's continually tried fighting it and just can't so they stay swollen. I had my lymph nodes biopsied and I do NOT have cancer... I am going tomorrow morning to have it removed immediately and I will be absolutely STUNNED if it turns out to not be the cause. I am THAT certain the Mirena has caused all of this. I would NOT recommend this IUD to ANYONE. It is absolutely the worst thing I've EVER experienced in my life. I plan to get in contact with the attorney mentioned in an older post below about the class-action lawsuit. I have spent 9 months of living in pure misery with burning, itching, red and swollen hives all over my body, living in total anxiety not wanting to leave my house and have others see me and think I have a disease. Not to mention all the time and medical costs that I have incurred from seeing doctor after doctor that can't diagnose me.

I decided today that Mirena is coming out, asap. I had it inserted Jan...2008.
After having an ablation in 2007 that did not seem to work I thought Mirena would be a good b/c alternative...it has helped with the break through bleeding. Virtually, not period or bleeding. But that is about it. I have experienced some weird side effects...to include face and back acne; extremely oily skin; always tired and sleepy; bloating and weight gain...12lbs so far in just a few months; dizziness; cramping; and breast swelling. I dont even feel or look like myself anymore. I've been working out; cutting calories and bad carbs. And yet I gain. Whats up with that.
Thank goodness I can still have orgasms or life would be over. Although, my hubbie can feel the string. And the friction is not pleasant.
But after seeing my regular md today and seeing that I gained 12lbs in just a few months...the red flag went up. I love looking beautiful and in shape being nearly 35. Everyone thinks that I am 25. And thats the last thing I feel right now. I would rather have the bleeding than these weird effects. At least my weight was good. This is too, much to deal with right now. Going to have try something different. Any suggestions? Did anyone else out there have an ablation? Please comment.

My Mirena Removal....
So i posted here a few weeks ago after I found this site. I had EVERY side effect listed and was so freaked out that i immediately made an appointment for removal.
For those of you reading and wondering what the removal is like..
Well, NOTHING like the insertion. I was so so nervous and it was over before we actually started. The DR was surprised that i was back in his office to have this removed. He then proceeded to do an ultrasound to be sure it was placed properly before removal. And yes, all was OK on the position of it. I explained to him my reasons and he looked at me like he had never heard this before. I honestly can not imagine with all the women he sees that NONE of them have complained. But...as I was getting dressed afterwards, I took a good look in his office. There was Mirena literature ALL over the place. In fact, that was the ONLY thing he was advertising. Not to mention...they made me pay up front with the insertion back in Nivember...billed my insurance and I still have yet to receive my reimbursement. Oh yeah, and that...they charge more than the actual Mirena costs, then they bill your insurance for the price they know they will pay and the DR then makes about $150 profit. Nice.
Ok, back to my side effects post Mirena. The removal was not painful at all. I did spot for about a week- nothing too heavy but it was clotty and def there.
A couple of days after the removal it felt like I was coming out of my skin something terrible. I figured this was my body adjusting to the lack of hormones. I also had some headaches.
It has now been 2 weeks and the spotting has disappeared. I also can see the bloating of my stomach is starting to go away. It looked like I was about 4 mos preggo while I was on it. I also have an increased sex drive. And sleep-- well let me tell you, I have not slept this good in a very long time. I am actually sleeping more than 6 hours now and the night sweats have also discontinued.
I can't believe EVERY time I come to this site and look up Mirena ALL the people that have posted their experience as being negative. Yet, the DR looks at me like I am crazy! I have been seeing him for years and I have never complained about something like this. I really am so happy that I have it out and wish I would have done my research on this prior to insertion (which was one of the most painful things ever!)
So..for those of you out there that are either contemplating having it inserted...I say NO WAY. And for those of you out there that are nervous about the removal or not sure..I SAY YES, DO IT! For our bodies to be reacting this way, it is clear to me that it should not be inside of us. Listen to your bodies...they really do speak to you and let you know when something is not right. Forget about the DR saying it is safe or he has not heard of any of these side effects...YOU be the judge.
Good luck! And I promise it gets better once you get that lil' demon out!
Mona
