Received my very first Cortisone injection on March 24th,2009. Immediately felt weak and shakey. Anxious. Called MD office and they told me to eat something. This did help for awhile. On March 25th woke up feeling great. No knee pain. Knee stiffness gone. About 24 hours after receiving injection, my face became flaming hot with redness to follow. Some swelling to my left cheek. Anxious. Feeling like I want to cry. Fingers feel strange. Some nausea. Not eating great now. Ears feel plugged. Slight headache. Just took some Benadryl. Am applying ice to my face and lotion to prevent all the dryness from the heat radiating off it!
Don't think I'll be getting a second knee done. I'd rather be in pain. KJ

I've been taking Niaspan for about six weeks now; I started out at 500mg for the first three and I'm now on week three of 1000mg. I hadn't had any side effects and I was thrilled because I can't take statins (though I do take Lovaza with success). My doctor mentioned -- but did not stress -- the "take an aspirin ahead of time" or "eat something with it) thing, so I haven't been. Three nights ago I work up from a very weird dream about my house being on fire and couldn't go back to sleep, partly because I felt hot. I got up and looked in the mirror, and as others have described, I was beet red on my neck, chest, and arms, and very itchy and hot. The "rash" was mottled at the edges. It reminded me of sun poisoning. I wasn't sure what to do; it was 5 am and I knew my partner had a bad night with sleeping already, so I didn't want to wake her. I took a Benadryl. I was wide awake, so I got onto the computer to do some stuff (never thinking I should research the damn thing!), but about 20 minutes later, I felt itchy on my stomach. I went into the bathroom and looked again. My stomach and lower back were now getting it! Interesting. I went back to what I was doing, then about 10 minutes later, my stomach was hot, so I looked again. Now my stomach and all of my back were covered, and I noticed that my neck wasn't as red. Hmmmm... 20 minutes later I looked again, and now my neck and chest were pretty clear (but still itchy) and my butt and upper thighs were getting it (stomach and back still had it). I could actually feel it breaking out on my legs! 20 minutes later, my stomach and back were clear, and my legs were covered. about a half hour later, it was completely gone. I wracked by brain trying to figure out if it was something I ate, a new detergent, a drug interaction gone wrong, but I could think of nothing. I never associated it with the "flush" my doctor told me I could get. This was so much more than a flush. The next night I was so tired that I took a half an Ambien and slept through with no problems (and remember, I had no issues before this, at least that I could remember). I thought it was a fluke. I then spoke to my father yesterday about The Rash, and he asked if it could the the Niaspan, as he had taken it before (but the flushing had been too much and he stopped). I did some research and through that I found this page. Bingo! I had already taken the Niaspan, so I couldn't try the aspirin first. Last night, I woke up at 3 feeling hot and looked, and sure enough, it was starting on my face and neck. I took a Benadryl and went back to bed. I finally fell back to sleep. I'm still a little itchy, though nothing unbearable. Tonight I will try the aspirin a half hour before and eating something non-fatty with the Niaspan. I'll give it a week to help, then I'll call my doctor. I hate to give it up if it works because I am just about out of other options to lower my cholesterol.

I've been taking prescription Niaspan for about 2 1/2 months now and was warned by my doctor about the flushing. For the first month and a half all was fine but one night my wife and I were reading in bed when I suddenly felt like my face was on fire. My wife grew alarmed and said that I looked beet red. Within five minutes the feeling and red appearance had spread all over my body. We went over the day to see if I had done anything out of the ordinary and realized that I had eaten shrimp and clams for dinner at a Chinese buffet. I chalked it up to that. We shut off the light and went to sleep and when I woke up in the middle of the night to let the dog out I was back to normal. Last night was the second time now this has happened only this time I was sound asleep when it hit. I woke up suddenly to discover the same symptoms and it was painful to move even a finger. As soon as I moved ANYTHING I felt like I was being stung everywhere. My skin too was hot to the touch. I went on an agonizing walk to the bathroom to see what I looked like and I was fire-engine red from head to toe. Again I managed to go back to sleep but I still have some lingering effects of tingling even now as I write this. My wife told me this morning that I was being melodramatic. I told her she should try it and get back to me.

Wish I had found this info last night.
Ive been on the medication for 8 days. All was well until yesterday afternoon when my face got beet red. I didn't think much of it since my face does flush at times.
Last night, it seemed to be traveling down my neck and shoulders.
When I woke this morning, red face was still there but now I had broken out is rashes all over my body. As of right now they are still there and starting to itch.
I was on this medication for ear infection and also for UTI.
Never would have thought with 1 pill left Id break out in a reaction like this.
Hope it goes away soon.
Benadryl isn't helping me much
I'll be sure to add this to my list of medications not to take.

hey everyone...reading every post makes me even more scared now. I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy on Jan. 13th. My doctor prescribed me prednisone and valtrex. 5 days, twice a day, 20 mgs. On the 18th i was finished with the pills. Very happy because the bells palsy went away. On my birthday, January 23rd. I washed my faced with Biore skin cleanser (which ive used for years) and it felt like as if my face was peeling off as i was washing it! I got so scared when i rinsed my face i actually felt my skin turning to leather. I got out of the shower and my face was round and beet red and my eyes were puffy and face was very very dry...The next day i woke up and my face was worse. I called my doctor and he told me go straight to the emergency room that i was having an allergic reaction to a skin chemical and get treated for an allergic reaction. I did just that. The hospital gave me another dose of prednisone. 60mgs the first day then again the same dosage that my other doctor prescribed me. Im scared to death now to take this pill. Yeah, my face went down and is not beet red anymore but what's going to happen next week once i come off??? i don't want to go against what the hospital gave me, but as im reading these posts, im up at 2:55 am and not sleeping..! help!

I have been on prednisone continuously now for 15 years. I was put on it in March of 1995 for a lung condition called chronic eosinophilic pneumonia. I was 122 pounds when I first started prednisone. Now 15 years later I am 197 pounds. I am 35 years old with osteoporosis. I have dealt with depression, terrible headaches, stomach ulcers, hormonal imbalance, hair loss, swollen feet and ankles, I now wear glasses when I didn't before, I have thin skin now that looks older than my 35 years, I deal with night sweats, and in the summer out in the heat my very round moon face turns red as a beet. But, no one can get me off the prednisone. I have seen many specialists, and within 1-2 days of starting to wean past 10mg I get so sick I have to be hospitalized, I literally can't breathe or live without it. I hate this stuff and what its done to me, but I have no choice but to take it or I will die. Doctors have tried alternate medications, nothing but prednisone works. If there is ANYONE who has had to be on it as long as I have or have had success in getting off it after being on it for so long, I would love to hear from you.

October 22, 1998 I had resp. failure (with intubation). My new pulmonary doctor put me on Singulair 10 mg once a day, a few weeks after. Within time, I started to have numbing and tingling in my face, arms, and legs. March of 1999 the symptoms worsened and started causing pressure in my face, arms, and legs, and anxiety started to kick in. I was told I had neuropathy and to take mobic. Symptoms getting worse, and went to a rheumatologist in June 1999, and he was suspect of singulair. The doctor thought that what I was experiencing was due to the singulair. He (the rheumatologist) discussed this with the pulmonary doctor and the pulmonary doctor did not believe this to be the case. Not forgetting, in March of 1999, I had a ct of the sinus area, and low and behold 1/3 of the cavity was and probably still is full of polyps.
As time went on, symptoms getting worse, and not one bloody doctor could figure out why I was feeling this way. In addition, at times, I was put on steroids for my asthma (not including my inhalers).
Two years ago, my body went into shock, leaving my left side very different than my right side. Affecting: my head, my face, my eye, my ear, my esophogus, my lungs, my arm, my leg.
I have been depressed and anxious not knowing what the heck was going on with me.
Recently ruled out thyroid, and lupus, and possibly ms.
Last weekend, I reviewed the letter from the rheumatologist (dated 1999) and the ct report from March 1999 (regarding the sinus/ polyps) and made copies to present to a pulmonary doctor that I have recently been seeing.
This past Monday the 10th, I had my appt with him. He knew of my situation from the last few visits (in addition, I had met him this past March for a pulmonary rehab program, and thought he seemed to be knowledgeable and compassionate). While waiting for him to enter the exam room, he had read those reports before entering.
The doctor looked at my hands (red as a beet and swollen) and said "You have Churg-Strauss Syndrome, and get off the singulair."
I had done my homework from a few weeks ago, where I looked up untreated polyps.
Untreated polyps, can turn into vasculitis. There are many types of vasculitis, to include Churg-Strauss Syndrome.
I then cross ref CSS and singulair, and low and behold, BINGO!
I have been suffering for ten years, physically and emotionally because of this drug!
There is also recent updates from the fda (fda.gov) regarding singulair, of which most recently includes anxiety and depression.
I suggest before taking singulair, be aware of the side effects. As soon as a side effect comes up, contact your doctor. Also, be aware of existing conditions (like me, sinus problems and asthma) for this could lead to churg-strauss syndrome.
This info is indicated on the actual disclosure (the paper insert that indicates studies, side effects, etc...) not the handout that is given with the drug.
By the way, I am now working with a new rheumatologist in Los Angeles (Cedar-Sinai affiliated) and a new neurologist.

I have been on BP medication about 4 years now. I was on Avalide and recently switched to Lisinopril HCTZ. About 3 years ago I had hip surgery. The evening of the surgery my back was hot and beet red, the next morning the rest of my body looked like I lay in the hot sun and was very burned. The docs and I felt it was pain killer. Last year I had another surgery, indicating I was allergic to pain meds, codiene, morphine, percocet, all of which I had with the firat surgery. Again, the same reaction. Last week I had another surgery, no pain meds as indicated, again, same burn reaction. I peel horribly, my face swells, around my eyes swell, I was a mess. I wonder if the BP meds caused it. No one said to d/c them as they did the supplements of multi-vit, omega 3 fish oil, aspirin. Prior to being on BP meds, have had several other surgeries with no reactions. I feel it is the BP med. causing this. Anyone have any such reactions? HELP.

I'm a 47 yr old male who has constant sinus problems and recently( 2 weeks ago)had a bad sinus infection. I exercise regularly and am in pretty good shape(or so I would like to think). I have never had a bad allergic reaction that I can remember to anything. I was given a 10 day supply of Avelox to clear it up as I was supposed to go in for a sinus operation tomorrow. While I was on the Avelox last time, I don't remember experiencing any significant problems and I wasn't the best patient. I doubled up on doses in the beginning figuring it would work faster, took it on a empty stomach, drank a few beers over the weekend, etc. I went off of it a week ago and then this week I started to feel some cold symptoms coming on. Then yesterday at my pre-op visit my ENT gave me 2 pills (1 per day) to take prior to the surgery to "be on the safe side". I took one at 5 PM last night on an empty stomach and headed off to martial arts class. By the time I got there 20 minutes later I was feeling funny. I tried to work out but I felt lightheaded and had severe stomach pains. Then I had a hard time catching my breath under the slightest exertion. I normally jog 2-3 miles a couple of times a week with no problems so I was concerned. I left class and barely made it home. The only reason I didn't have a full blown anxiety attack was because I have suffered with them for years and recently feel I have been able to control them better. When I got home I was beet red from head to toe and my wife wanted me to go to the ER. I realized that it was a reaction to the Avelox and basically rode it out but it took about 3-4 hrs before I felt better again. I'm still not right today and I canceled my surgery for tomorrow. Now the ENT doctor wants to put me on something else before the surgery and I'm wondering if that's going to cause any problems.

Immediately after took the Levaquin and my throat began itching like 40 ants were crawling down my esophagus. My chest started physically burning like I'd drank alcohol. I stopped being able to talk within 30 seconds and within a minute I couldn't breath through my nose and I started coughing and couldn't breathe. My face swelled up like I had Down's Syndrome. One of my eyes couldn't see from the swelling. I turned beet red and had welps all over my body. When I got the hospital I thought I was going to die in the hallway..I felt like I was underwater and couldn't breathe. They shot me full of ephedrine in me and started breathing again. I asked if I could have more to take home and they said it was illegal for me to have. If I didn't live close to the ephedrine, I don't know how long I would have lasted.
The doctors said I needed to quit doing drugs(I was in my 20's). I was too weak and drained to disagree with him. He said the drug wasn't the cause. I can't believe this drug is on the market. I can't believe people are still taking it without any warnings. I talked to 2 lawyers , but they said my hospital bills wouldn't justify this going to court. I am glad this forum is here to warn people.

I first had prednisone for bronchitis, along with antibiotics. they seemed to cure the coughing at least for a while but I started to gain weight.I figured it was a coincidence and just let it go.
The bronchitis came back, and worried that it may be heart failure, I saw my Cardiologist who told me taht i was OK from that angle!!
I started cardiac rehab after my last heart procedure. ( a couple of stents) and coincidentally the bronchitis came back.
Same prednisone scrip but his time the weight gain was very noticeable. Ten pounds in one week!
I was stopped on the excercise machine because my face and neck was beet red after 15 mins of light excercise. Apparently the other patients were getting worried just watching me.
As the pred regimen came to its end, after 12 days, I lost 6 of the ten pounds in 3 days. thats where I am now.

By day three, I have experianced severe hot flushes throughout my body and my face and neck are beet red all the time. Small price to pay I suppose to avoid hospitalization but I still can't wait to get off this medication!

I had a kenolog injection on Tuesday for pain in my right knee. On Wednesday my face was beet red and so was my chest. The pain in the knee got worse. I had chest pains. Today is Friday and I am still swollen in the face and knee. The redness seems to have become less. I am extremely tired and the knee pain is much worse than before the shot. I went back to the doctor and he prescribed Mobic for the inflamation. I have to return to him on Tuesday.

Six hours after taking my first mobic pill my face turned beet red along with my ears. Then my back and chest broke out with either rashes or hives. Then my face started to swell. Had to start taking benadryl immediately. Fortunately my tongue did not swell so I did not have to go to the ER. Following day the itching and rash were gone and most of the swelling in my face. Still had terrible bags under my eyes. I have taken other anti inflammatories with no problems, but my body does not like this drug.
