I've had Mirena for 5 months now. I bled for the first 3 months ... straight ... but months 4 and 5 I've had regular periods (which I'm hoping disappear altogether as they did with BC Pills for me). Anyway, I'm trying to weigh the pro's and con's. I'm 33 and don't want kids, so I think this is a great alternative to other BC's with the 5 year safety, however, I have seriously been CRAZY tired and lacking energy for the full 5 months and am so bloated I look pregnant (when I normally have a flat, attractive tummy). I've never experienced anything like this. I'm not ready to remove it for these irritants - yet - because I truly feel it's a fantastic concept. Was anyone able to combat these things? I'm not about to get on diuretics because that's a temporary and unhealthy habit. I drink plenty of water, work out (when I can find the energy) and eat very healthily. Any advice that's worked for others is welcome!

I feel so grateful to have come across this website, I had mine inserted almost exactly 2 years ago and I take responsibility for the fact that I did not do adequate research at the time but relied on by gynae...I have never really experienced side effects from any medication I have been on so I though this would be the case with the mirena as well...well not so...

I too have battled incredibly to lose my weight since the birth of my son in Jan 2007, despite the fact that I have NEVER been this healthy in all my life, have been running now for the last 6 months and just recently completed a half marathon - so its not like I'm just being a lazy bones, have also given up my chocolate fetish since his birth.

The worst has been my skin problems. Not only to I have acne ALL the time, there is never a day that I do not have a pimple, they are deep-seated pimples which are swollen and hurt like small boils.

Also experience bloated tummy and thought it was too much carbs, have gone a more natural diet route where I avoid combining carbs and proteins and still my tummy is bloated...

Itchy feet drives me crazy, no amount of scratching relieves it!

Low sex drive...definitely

Also aggressiveness which is not like me at ALL to the point where in the last couple of months I have really considered going to seek medical advice.

It now all makes so much more sense and I will be making that appointment to have it EXTRACTED ASAP!!!!!

I had mine Mirena put in Nov. 2007. Pain and spotting for 6 weeks and because I was nursing - nothing until I stopped in Aug. 2008. Started spotting every other week for a few days, then in Dec and Jan had 2 heavier regular periods. Went in for yearly and it was painful as he moved it around to check it and then ever since I have spotted and had horrible back pain, bloating, gas pains. I realize after reading on here that I also have the mood swings - I am so mean and make all kinds of accusations against my husband. I also realize that this bloated tummy that I blamed 3 kids and separated abs is really from this iud. I never had this problem of bloating with my first 2 because I had not gone the Mirena route. Also, have dizziness that comes and goes. My question is has anyone else had the symptoms come on after an annual? Had gas, gas pains and back pains that have lasted 4 weeks and actually go away or do I have to take this thing out to get relief?

Hi, had my mirena coil fitted in Nov '08 and have just had it removed Feb '09. Mine had dislodged apparently and was caused me severe abdominal cramps but three days after removal, still getting bad cramps, taking time off work, when will it end?? Not recommended ! I have to say my side effects were spotty face, bloated tummy and stabbing pains in my bottom area and upper back, tearful, bloated tummy, severe lower back pain for about 2 months which stopped me going to the gym, can't comment about the weight really as I gave up smoking at the same time, so it could be a combination of both. Rest assured the removal of the coil didn't hurt, but just wish this pain would end!

I am having a bloated tummy with plenty of gas, though I rarely consume heavy and oily food. I don't touch potatoes. As a result I am having chest pain and pain radiating down my shoulders and elbows. To top it all I am just 19

I am glad to see recent Mirena side effects. as it is taking a sweep across the US. I had mine removed after 3 months and that was also 3 months ago. The bloated belly is still here, energy has increased, I have extreme pain in my elbows, very irritable, probably from the bloated tummy. I have gained 30 lbs back. My OB did a preg test in Dec just because I had gained 15 lbs in 2 weeks. She was very concerned but had not heard of others with problems. I had just lost 40 lbs last year before Mirena insert. I haven't searched for recent blogs lately but am glad I did today. Other blogs I have read say they had side effects for up to 6 months after removal. I also called Bayer and they weren't very helpful or polite. Just wanted a list of symptoms and when I couldn't speak to them during a lunch meeting on my cell, they returned my call, they hung up and said that was my tough luck. I would like to know if there is any litigation towards them. I feel like 6 months of my life have been ripped away thus far.

I just had my Mirena removed yesterday. I was wondering how long was it before the weight gain or bloated tummy went away? How long before you noticed a difference in your belly?

Getting the IUD taken out was painless.

I had the Mirena fitted in October 2005, I bled on and off for about 2 weeks and my body started to adjust.
I have always suffered with acne, but in the last year my skin has ruled my everyday life and confidence. I have spent hundreds of pounds trying all sorts of lotions and face washes to combat the spots that are so painful. I cant help but think that the Mirena is making my skin worse. I am now on a second lot of antibiotics for my skin, a different type, to see if they help.
I have a bloated tummy every so often and I haven't bled for over a year. I cant help but feel I need to have a period. Is there anyone who understands what I mean.. so lost and confused with it all. My doctor today says that I could try the copper coil so I can have a period, but she told me they can be heavier and more painful with the copper coil.

I had a kidney transplant a year and half ago, and had to take Prednisone as one of my post-transplant med's. I was on it for about 2 months and I went through a lot of the same side effects mentioned by other people, increased appetite and weight gain in odd places, sleeplessness, and acne. Then recently I had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic and was again prescribed prednisone for three weeks, but this time the acne is so bad it looks like a rash, and it's all over my back, chest, neck especially, and on my face. I can deal with it because I realize it's what I need to do, and I am grateful that there is a drug that can treat the symptoms from the allergy, but I am wondering how long it will take for the acne to clear up once I finish the 3 weeks? Does anyone know how long it takes when you've been on it for that amount of time? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.
Megan

I was on Lisinopril for one month and it took 18 months for the side effects to go away. The cough, the inexplicable weight gain, the exhaustion, the bloated tummy, aching muscles and joints, swollen eyelids, etc. Luckily, my doctor did listen to me and got me off it as soon as I could get a call through to him instead of having his nurse block calls and tell me that I could take codeine laced cough syrup. I explained to her very carefully to look at my chart--I am allergic to codeine. My doctor switched me immediately to Cozaar when I was able to talk to him directly. The pharmacist looked at what I had been on and asked why I was being switched. When I explained, he said that the side effects were commonly known and really affected people.

The coughing inflamed my bronchial tubes to where they were going into spasms. I was on an asthma inhaler for a month to heal them. That wasn't pleasant, either, because I didn't tolerate it very well.

I am at the point now that whenever I am put on a new medication, I immediately search the internet for side effects. I don't want to go through 18 months of misery because I wasn't told or the insert wasn't clear about possible side effects.
