I had my mirena inserted one year ago, july 7th, 2008. I had it removed July 6th 2009 and I thank god that I did. This past year has been a blur. Headaches, weight gain of nearly 20lbs, acne, especially on my chin, greasy hair, puffy bloatedness, constipation, sudden fits of anger, back aches, lower back aches, lethargic, no energy, full body and joint pains and aches insomnia, bad dream, moodiness, depression, extremely sore breasts. ALL since I had this introduced into my body. I am hoping that things will improve. So far this past week I feel a tad better but still have no energy and, of course, the weight hasn't fallen off, but I am hoping that PUFFY look goes away as I continue to eat properly and exercise daily. I will keep you posted as to how I am feeling, week to week.

I have had the Mirena since Feb. of 2007. I still have heavy periods that last approx. 10-12 days and my cycle is every 26 days. I do have the bloating and extreme fatigue as well as the "lazy" feelings. I have no cramping, no back pain, or headache. It was a piece of cake to have inserted...it was done during my 6 week post partum pap smear and it was painless. While it sucks to have my period for ½ the month (which does nothing for the sex life) and it sucks to be bloated and feel tired, and it sucks when we DO have sex that we can both feel it for the first 30 seconds or so, AND it sucks that I can't wear a tampon with it...I'd much rather have this than have to take a pill (I'm not a good pill taker) and it does prevent pregnancy, and it doesn't have NEAR the side effects of estrogen based BCP's. That being said...I am almost 42 years old with a 3 yr old and an 18 month old and that in itself makes me extremely tired. Also, to bond...I didn't think they would put the Mirena in someone who had never had children??? At any rate...I have really had no problems with it, but I am considering having my husband get a vasectomy so I can get this out of me and maybe the fatigue will leave, and hopefully the periods will get shorter and less heavy. I am also considering an endometrial ablation as well...but knowing my luck, I'll probably still have periods considering I'm in the 10% of Mirena users who still have a period after a year of use. Girls, you just have to accept the fact that we are women with crummy hormones that will give us headaches, and hot flashes, and back aches, and acne, and cramps, and bloatedness, and tender breasts, and a myriad of other symptoms for our entires lives. It's just the way God made us.

*Update* Mirena out for 2 days
So i posted a few posts down about having an emergency removal due to the pain after only 3 weeks. I cannot believe the difference in the way i feel. The bloatedness has gone down finally. I don't feel sore and tender everywhere. my head is actually clear now. and my favorite part...NO CRAMPS. I spent 3 weeks of my life in utter pain and cramping with mirena. I'm finally back to my old self. This product should not be on the market. It is ruining lives. Please..anyone thinking of getting it...read these posts and really think about it. I read these posts before i did it..BUT i did it anyways thinking i was different than the ppl posting...I WISH I HAD LISTENED to what i was reading. The women on here are telling the truth, including myself now. The side effects are NOT WORTH it.

I had the mirena inserted back in March of 2008, so therefore I've had it in for approximately 9 months, going on 10. I actually wanted a tubal ligation, but my Dr. said I was too young and being recently divorced, I may want more kids. Well, I'm 37, 38 tomorrow and have 3 and the guy I'm with has 2, I believe that's enough for me! She still refused to do it, so I went ahead with the insertion. When I had it inserted, the pain in my abdomen was so extreme, I couldn't even walk!! It lasted for about a week or more, then things subsided. As the months went on, my boyfriend would say to me, "you're so mean, why are you so uptight, you need to go see a doctor, you're not the person I met a few years ago, what's up with you?" Well, I didn't think anything of it, I was getting my period very heavy for a few months, then it went to just spotty....NOW...I'm not getting it at all and I'm feeling the same way as all of you have felt. My breasts are sore and HUGE, they feel like boulders, like when I was pregnant. I actually took a pregnancy test and yes, it was negative, but I really feel pregnant. The bloatedness in my stomach, the constipation is unreal! Even my friends have said to me, "are you pregnant?" That's definitely a sign that something's going on inside my body. So, here I am, looking up side effects to Mirena AND this is what I found...all of you fine ladies having the same ones as I. That is just CRAZY!!!! I'm calling my doctor first thing Monday morning and scheduling for this damn thing to be removed!!!!! I'm done with the moodiness, the depression, the weight gain, the pain, the constipation.....I'm through with it and I DO NOT recommend any other woman to have or think about getting Mirena inserted before they do a complete search on what the side effects are with this IUD. I'm hoping after I have this removed that my life goes back to normal and my boyfriend, gets happy again, cause all in all, our lives changed when I had this inserted....everything went down the drain, even the sex life....I'll keep you updated after the removal....I hope you all the BEST of luck!

My last post was on August 6th. I got my Mirena removed that day! OMG! What a relief! My cramping stopped as soon as the Dr. got it out! Couldn't believe it! I've started my period since then, but for the first time in a long time, I've had a normal period. I have not experienced not one severe cramp since it was removed and that awkward feeling of it in me is totally gone. I feel better, not as moody or tired all the time. I just can not believe the difference! Even the constant feeling of bloatedness is gone! I'm SO GLAD it's out of me!!!!

I found out that I had a brain meningioma almost two months ago. I am currently being treated with CyberKnife technology and thank God this nightmare will soon be history. In the meantime, I had to take Prednisone, through IV in the hospital and then in pill form after. I am weaning off now, but the side effects are terrible. My normal weight is 106 lbs and I don't even want to know what I weigh now and it was only two months of taking that pill. While on it, I could not sleep, and I ate every carb possible. I am so bloated in my abdomen, and my face looks like a balloon. Now that I am coming off, I feel like a Zombie, I fall asleep everywhere and I feel like I am in a constant fog, not to mention the headaches. Does anyone know how long the side effects last after you stop taking the Prednisone?

Is anyone having chronic shortness of breath with their Mirena? I have been tested for everything under the sun, and all tests have come back negative. I was even checked out for cancer! I am 22 years old, previously very healthy. I have no other symptoms, except the spotting and longer periods.

Frustrated,
Darla

I sttarted taking yasmin for skin reasons and take it at night around 8pm. Every morning i have been NAUSEOUS until around lunch time. I'm incredibly THIRTSY, and am super LETHARGIC at 24! I have been on it for 11 days but after taking tonights pill and suffering from BLOATEDNESS, and my breats are SWOLLEN and TENDER! I feel SPACEY but not spacey enough to chuck the packet out immediately! I'd never say don't try it but be vigilent. I read the precautions before taking it, but was lulled into a false sense of security by it being low oestrogen doses. The onbly good thing is I am too nauseous to smoke, but also to function.

Severe numbness in lower arms and legs throughout night, chronic giant urticaria, systemic thrush with constant dry, itchy and inflamed mouth and throat. Severe hot flushes. At one point, I had 4 months off work as at times my joints swelled after urticaria attacks to the po0int where i couldn't walk or move my wrists etc. Acute pain, sickness, excessive mucus and more. I take 2x2 Symbicort per day, plus 8x2 ventolin per day.I also have severe water retention, weight gain and bloatedness. My worst symtoms kicked off after taking diclofenic acid (volterol) for back pain. I had never previously had any side effects with short term use of volterol, but I had previously been on becotide and sabutamol inhalers. Once starting on Symbicort, all other mediction, even paracetomol have resulted in severe and unpleasant side effects. Has anyone else had anything like this?

I've been off Yasmin since August 24, 2005. Over 100 days later, I finally got my natural period! I was beginning to worry even though periods are no cup of tea for me, but I was feeling soooo bloated I thought I'd pop. I hope to rid of this bloated feeling once my period ends, but we'll see... I'm, of course, not sure that will happen.

I have not gained a lot of weight since going off the pill, although I am carrying 1 to 2 lbs. more. I weigh myself daily and if it starts to go up, I reign in what I eat. But I think the weight gain is due to the bloatedness. And, I have not found it to be very easy during the holidays to "reign" eating.

The major reason I decided to go off Yasmin was because of intense angry feelings day in and day out. I would have never known to associate these feelings with Yasmin but I kept seeing that recurring symptom on this forum. I had been on Alesse before and it didn't make me angry, instead I was very anxious (panic attacks) with that one. These BCPs definitely wreak havoc on the emotions.

Last weekend, I started to feel really angry again and I thought "great, even going off this pill hasn't helped." Now I realize it was PMS. I hope to continue recovering from this last phase of trying BCP. I mainly was on it to regulate periods. Without the pill, I normally have irregular and VERY heavy periods with clotting. With the pill, the periods are soooo much better and, with my doctor's recommendation, I was even skipping them depending on my schedule (by continuous use of the pill and stopping for the "week" at my convenience). I will miss that.

Since I am now almost 48, hopefully I will not be having them much longer. I expect menopause will be a welcome friend for me.

Hi sherry and everyone else!!

No, my bloatedness didn't ease up at all!! I still feel like a waterbomb, some days less, some days more, but it didn't go away until now. I've started to note my weight every 2 - 3 days and also my bodyfat (bought a new scale therefor!!) to see, if the weight gain has at least stopped or if it still goes up and up... Well, at the moment it seems to have stopped thanks god!! I'm very careful about what I'm eating and how much. Excercising is still not possible for me because the muscle fatigue and breathlessness brought on by Yasmin is still very heavy somedays (especially shortly before my period should start, well, as though I hadn't one since easter this year......).

Well, it looks and seems as if this pill has ruined my whole body, especially the veins (my blood circulation isn't really good, I often get dizzy when I come up from sitting or kneeing which I didn't get before Yasmin!!!) and the connective tissue (I hope that's the right word in english....). I got cellulite all over my body, not only my belly and tighs but also on my arms and nearly everywhere!!! It looks really horrible!!! :(

Would be very helpful to hear, if that endocrinologist is able to help you somehow!! Please keep us updated Sherry!! I wish you best of luck!!

Someone wrote about some heat sensations - YES I had them, too!! Sometimes at one finger or sometimes even at one foot and so on. It just felt, as if I had put the finger or foot into some warm water. Did you mean that?? Well, this has eased up after being off Yasmin for about 5 months (now it's 8 months!!) and only comes up every few weeks for a short time. My MRI also came up normal (no MS or such...)! So it seems to be all this miserable pill, or the hormonal imbalance caused by it!!

HAIR LOSS: YES!! It definitely is brought on by Yasmin or the hormonal imbalance after getting off. Even some women who were pregnant get that hair loss shortly after the birth of their children and it goes away as soon as the hormones are back in balance again!! Don't worry too much about that!! It will get better and all your lost hair will grow back. Especially in an age of 21!! Be sure!!

PLEASE every NEW READER of this Forum go through all of the posts here, everyhting you are mentioning now has been written down in some posts some day here!! I swear!!

I read them all through in the heaviest time of my life and this was the only thing that helped me, not to go mad or give up and lose hope completely!! It's worth taking your time and reading everything here, I swear!! You'll be so much delighted after finding out, that you're really not alone with this shit!!!

Best wishes to all of you!!

Greetings
Silke

@guest 13099:

I completely agree with sherry!!

Perhaps it might help you a little bit to read my post Nr. 12857 (page 4 or 5 on this site) where I had written my and my family doctor's theory about this extreme weight gain after getting off this horrible pill.

A few days ago I got even water in my feet (they looked like they were completely pumped up with water and even poured out of my shoes, I was so shocked!!!) which I never had before in my life!!!

Yesterday I found a website where the effects of diuretics were reported (Yasmin, or better the drospirenone in it is very similar to a diuretic named "spirolacton"!!! and so this pill diswaters your body the whole time while taking it!!!). It was very interesting to read, that if you get off such water pills your body may retain the more water than before taking the water pills. So it's pretty normal how some of us are "bloating up" I fear... :-(

I just hope (and my family doctor also thinks so!), that if I give my body enough time to recover, all this water and bloatedness will go away by itself when everything in my body is working normal again.

So there is hope for all of us but we need much more time and patience!!

Hi Girls,
I've been on Yasmin for 2 weeks and have been experiencing some new changes since taking this pill that have caused me to look online for some advice on side effects. Basically I have been reading through some of the horror stories here and just want to know if I should stop taking this stuff now before its too late! I have had a coil (hormone free) for 2 1/2 years which has been fine , just a couple of painful heavy days during the cycle but otherwise love it. The reason I decided to go on Yasmin was to hopefully help me with PMS symptoms of mild depression, low sex drive, and bloatedness for the 10 days before my period starts. So far it is hard to see whether these symptoms will improve as it is early days. So far I have been bleeding , painfully but not too heavy since I started this pill, I have lost about 10 pounds in weight which is probably the only positive thing and also a very tempting reason for me to stay on it, but the last few days I have felt a bit depressed again and low sex drive and super sensitive about everything, v needy and insecure , plus weak and tired ,not good!
Do you think I should stop now or give it till the end of month?
I did try prozac fo PMT for 6 months last year which really helped but don't want to be hooked on anti depressants for life, even though they kept my weight down too I gained 15 pounds when I came off them.
I have just bought agnus cactus, but is it enough?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!!
P.S. Anyone thinking of trying the coil to stop babies, I highly recommend it!!

Hello everyone! I am so thankful for this site and for all of you who took the time to share your Yasmin experience with the rest of us. I was only on it for a few months and could not figure out what was wrong with me until I found this site. I was shocked that my doctor would put me on such a pill. She said it was a light birth control pill. I had headaches, dizziness, nauseousness, bloatedness, depression, painful breasts and dry skin spots. I immediately went off the pill when I read your stories, but it's only been a couple of weeks and I still have many of the symptoms. I'm still amazed that a light BCP for such a short time could wreak such havoc on my body. I'll keep checking in and updating you. Hopefully, we'll all be back to normal soon. Thank you and God Bless!

Hey pals,

To those of you who asked how long it takes for your body to detox from this horrible invader when you've only been on it for a short period of time, well I am now six weeks off the pill and still suffering. (I was on it for 4 months at the most) As I mentioned previously, the weight gain and bloatedness is still there and I haven't gotten a period yet. I guess my hormones are really out of whack......
My question is, how long will I suffer from this bloatedness. Does it go away at all. If I wouldn't know better I would think I'm pregnant since that's the way I look.
For those of you who have experieneced weight gain, can u tell me at what point this slackens or improves-if at all. I'm dieting heavily and excercising and nothing is moving. I was only on this shit for 4 months and I can't believe how much this pill has wrecked my life.
Thank you all. this site is a blessing......

Hi you all,
Oh am I glad that I discovered this forum. All of a sudden I know why I'm always getting that numbness in my legs, depressed feeling and the reason for my abnormal weight gain.
I've been on Yasmin since January. 05 and off it from June 1. Since then I've experienced a huge amount of weight gain and bloatedness. Since I did not change my diet or did anthing to warrant this gain, I am naturally very anxious to see it melt away. After being on this horrible pill for 6 months, I was wondering if anyone knows how long it will take for my body to detox and get back to my normal weight. It's been two weeks now and so far it's getting worse by the day.
Thanks-anxious

SIDE EFFECTS I have noticed: Severe headache 1x per month right before I start period, sporadic heart palpations and the one thing that made me log in to this site: seeing shimmery/glimmery spots and/or lines in my eyes. It seemed to go away after about 1hr, but it still concerns me.

My acne has actually cleared up. I am 34 yrs. My weight has remained the same. I have used these pills for about 7/8 months. I noticed at beginning I would get moody for about a week every cycle, but after noticing correlation, I planned and expected it and have overcome it.

NO fatigue, gas, diarrhea, breakthru bleading, bloatedness but I will say my joints are achy. I have started taking glucosamine sulfate and it's helped a lot! MY EYES ARE SO DRY IN THE MORNING! and perhaps my sex drive is a little down, but that could be due to other stresses. Overall this pill is okay.

Hi, I had surgery for Ovarian Cyst and the doctor has put me on Yasmin to stop ovulation. My symptoms of bloatedness and pain due to the cyst have become worse since I went on Yasmin a month and a half back. I am now getting chest pains too. Anyone out there have any cure or heard of one?

I was on the "miracle birth control pill" Yasmin for three months, the typical amount of time you're to give a new bc pill. Anyone stating that they've been on it for 1 week, 2 weeks, etc. need to give it time to get into your system. Not saying it will be bad, but it takes awhile to get in there. Anyway, my side effects weren't that noticeable to me. But to my new boyfriend they were. And he pointed them out to me and researched the pill for me. And guess what? They're all side effects commonly known for with Yasmin. The no sex drive, the unbearable mood swings (I mean I was psycho!!), the bloatedness, the acne around the chin, the upset stomachs/diarrhea, headaches, etc. No, not every pill is for every woman, but I think they should of done a lot more research with this one. Granted I will give them the fact that the main reason I went on this pill was to stop my breakthrough bleeding. It did stop that, and only having my period for 2-3 days was pleasant. But not the rest!! And for those who think that this pill makes you lose weight, don't believe the hype. It's only been proven that you can lost ONE POUND being on this pill. Drink enough water and you can lose that normally!
