I'm 31 and a recovered cancer patient (in remission since 2001). I've been trough it all. Surgery, chemo, radiation, BMT's, you name it. I currently suffer from three separate sleep disorders, as well as hypothyroidism. As you can imagine, I've grown to become very in tune with my body. And, having gone through everything I have over the years, and having taken all kinds of medications, I have never experienced such dissatisfaction and such a high level of negative side-effects as I have with Toprol XL.
My primary care doctor, who is also a cardiologist, put me on Toprol XL to treat an elevated heart rate -- as a result of all my past health issues, my auto-regulatory system is, as he puts is, “just messed-up now.” He started me on 50 mg a day. Immediately, I experienced trouble breathing: I woke one night and felt as though I was drowning. Over the course of about 8 months, he's lowered my dose to 12.5 mg a day. And, for a while, that seemed to be OK. But, recently, the trouble breathing has returned.
I'm at a point now where I'm afraid to go to sleep -- the moment I lie down, I find myself gasping for air. All day long, I have a constant wheezing. I can't go up a flight of stairs without needing to sit down and catch my breath -- I feel as though I'm about to faint from loss of air. I spend most of my day with a sensation of being suffocated. I cough frequently, but it gives me no relief.
I have noticed other side effects. Notable is the weight gain. I've never in my life weighed more than 145 lbs. I’m 163 now. I was blaming the weight gain on the thyroid, but I'm on a fairly high dose of that medication, and I've yet to experience any loss of weight. I'm gaining, despite only eating one meal a day. I attribute this weight to the Toprol.
Also, I have been experiencing moments of extreme anxiety -- this is very unusual for me. I also want to say that never once during all my dealings with cancer did I ever experience depression, and that right there should give you an indication of what type of person I am. Yet, now, since being on the Toprol XL, I find I lack the energy and desire to do much of anything anymore.
My doctor seems very quick to dismiss my concerns, telling me, "you need to give this medication a chance." I think 8 months of my life is enough -- I have lost all patience with this medication, and I'm just about losing it with him, as well. I didn't survive cancer and all the other complications that came with it just to have my life brought to a total standstill by a single medication. This is so infuriating.
I'm making an appointment to speak with my doctor right away. If he continues to insist I stay on Toprol XL and ignore my concerns, I will tell him I no longer feel comfortable with having him as my primary care physician. I want my life back.

I have been taking Toprol-XL 50 mg for the past two weeks instead of Altenolol 50 mg. I have been having tight chest, pain in my throat area and lower teeth. I did not have these effects when I was taking Atenolol 50 mg. My cardiologist changed me to Toprol-XL because Atenelol might have triggered by depression again. I had a heart attack 12 years ago. I also take Linisiprol. I cannot walk more than 2 or 3 blocks in a regular pace when I get the side effects listed above. Is this a regular side effect?

i also have problems with my ears. mine started in august last year and i have been off yasmin for 7 months now. my ears feel blocked up on and off throughout the day,it goes away when i lie down or put my head between my knees but it always comes back! my gp gave me all sorts of things to clear it but nothing has worked so far. i read somewhere that the eustacious tube in the ear can become blocked,it blocks for all sorts of reasons but some mentioned are pregnancy, hormone therapy and also contraceptive pill use. as far as i know there is no pill to cure it although in some cases i think an operation can be done but not sure. i will just hope that it like all the other weird and not so wonderful side effects will vanish once my body is clear of this poison.

I was taking lipitor as well as loped and now I find that I am unable to stand for more than 15 min. at a time and I can only walk about 2 blocks before the pain brings me to tears and I have a very high pain tolerancey. I am the kind of person who never sits still and now I find my self having to ask the same people that I use to help for their help just to do daily house work. I am begging for someone to find out what the hell is wrong with me, because all the doctors have do every test that there is and the findings are normal now I have never been a hypercondrack, and now I find my self wondering about my own sanity.

I had two TIA'S In May and they put me on Lisinopril and told me to walk and then walk some more. After about two blocks I would start to develope a pain in the calf of my left leg, not a cramp but it felt like some one hit me in the back of the leg with a baseball bat. With pain I could do a mile and then it got worse. I would need to stop numerous times during the mile and give the leg three or four minutes rest. After the rest it wouild feel normal for about three minutes and then the pain would start to return. I have told my doctor that I think it is the Lisinopril that is causing it but he says it is impossible.
I have had a ultrasound done on my legs and it shows about 50% artery blockage but the specialist says it would need to be 80% clogged to cause these symptons.
I would be interested to know if any of you have had these symptons that you can directly charge to Lisinopril.

I've just started doing some research on Yasmin becasue I just woke up with horrible cramps and an actual period! I just passed my regular cycle a week ago! Has this happened to anyone?
Also too, I've had some weight gain issues too! I never attributed my weight gain to marriage, stress, moved to NYC 1 week before 9/11 and our business is three blocks away!. Anyhow, just figured my body was changing, different foods...I started gaining weight shortly after I began treatment in April 2001, and gained a total of 30 pounds by the end of the year! I have always been a lean 135 - 140 lbs 5'7" chic, eating whatever and whenever I wanted, with a sedentary life...45 min commute to work, 8hr desk job, then home, eat and sleep...except weekends...
I've also been struggling with loss of my sex drive...Never thought It was because of the pill until found this site! Just thought it was me and some pshycological problem...
I've thought about just trying the rythm, however, I cannot get pregnant now...It's not our time yet. Have any of you been successful with it?
I've been really frustrated with how I look....I've never had to diet before, and now find myself trying the ATkins diet, and anything else, but nothing really helps long term. I don't like myself. I really do believe things will change if I get off the pill.
I truly feel for all of you who have suffered greater side effects. Hope you all start feeling better and are on the road towards improvement.

10 months ago, I went to the hospital with severe head pains, they gave me a iv and said they were giving me Reglan. My head paint went a way fast, I was feeling so much better then fifteen minns later they said I could go. I was standing out side waiting for my husband to come get me, I started feeling numb, shakey, couldnt breath. I thought I was having a stroke, I went back in and asked if this was normal? they said it was just making me tired and that i need to go to bed. So i get in the car and my husband started driving, we got no further then two blocks and I went into full blow sieazures, i couldnt move, talk, or anything I looked like a severe stroke patient, I got rushed back to the hospital and they gave me a cat skan, they said nothing was wrong with my head accept for i was making it up. my husband demanded something be done, they gave me benadryl and 45minns later it finaly started going away, I am still dealing with severe stiffness in my neck, and back. I get a tingling sensation in my head like needle pricks, and they said it was from the reglan, and that I could now suffer all my life from it.

I wasprescibed Lipitor and took it for four days and got the usual leg pains and disorientation that many of you talk about.
From that point on my life has descended into hell. I had a month of daily migraines(which I had not previously suffered from). I have severe pain in my shoulders, arms, chest and back and sometimes feel as though my skin is on fire. I am 55 and feel 85 to 90. I can no longer pick things up that weigh more than 5 pounds, cannot walk more than a couple of blocks ( it feels as though my rib cage does not expand) and can only drive about a mile before the dizziness and muscle spasms start. The depression and tears at what feels like a never ending condition is sometimes more than I can bear. It is now 11 months since I am off Lipitor and I have yet to see any improvement. I don't know what is worse the pain or the complacency of the medical community and their disbelief of our suffering. At least this site tells me that I am not nuts but I am sorry that so many of us are suffering.

UPDATE:
-- By babylp315 | Reply | (3) replies | Private Message meI went to my gyn on Monday and told the nurse how I was feeling and that I wanted to switch BCPs. She spoke to the dr. and he refused to switch me. He said if I didn't like it to just stop it but that he wasn't going to give me a prescription for another BCP. That it was too soon to see any side affects and to give it another two cycles. She later said it might be the sudden surge of horomones that might make me feel that way. I told her I don't know but i felt really mad and not myself although it was two weeks everybody else noticed a huge negative change in me as well. Mind you I am a brand new patient and this was the first prescription this dr gave me. I had not take BCP for alomst 10 years so I don't know what his problem was. Now the only thing I can think of is I am very overweight... ... but aside from that I don't have any other health problems. so is this the only pill that can be prescribed to obese women?????? I am so disappointed in my dr, I was excited that he was only 2 blocks from me but I am switching.
