The experience my daughter had is all the same as others, her situation happen when she was on her menstrual, first she seen the string and the plastic passed in a blood clot the size of a fifty cent piece, I could not believe it, I am going to file against them, in reading the pamphlets there are no side affects saying that the Mirena will fall out!!!!!! (A mom that is MAD AS HELL) she also stayed with headache, stomach cramps, even when she didn't have her menstrual (before and after).

Vertigo, weakness, fatigue, exhaustion, aching numbness in arms, numbness in face arms and legs, extreme pressure in head and neck, burning feeling radiating from the base of my neck through shoulder blades to arms, foggy brain, waking up feeling (for no reason) like I have a major hang over, chills, aching feet, weight gain, feeling very fearful of my symptoms because they feel like nothing I have ever experienced.
THESE LAST 4 WEEKS HAVE BEEN HELL!
I had my Mirena inserted on June 30 2008. I experienced mild discomfort for the first 4-6 weeks. The spotting was the worst of it and that was no more than an inconvenience. I was happy with my choice of birth control.
Then this hell began about three months after insertion.
During the last week of September the symptoms listed above started. They were mild at first but by within a week and a half I felt HORRIBLE. I suspected that it may be the Mirena, but at the same time I thought I was dying.
October 1 or 2nd (it is all a blur) I was home by myself when I started feeling the numbness and head pressure coming on again (my symptoms were coming and going, not constant) so I laid down on the couch to get off my feet. All of a sudden I felt like I was losing consciousness. I grabbed the phone and called my husband to get me to the ER. I thought I was dying. A blood clot or something. Once there, they did blood test after blood test, an EKG, urine tests, and basically I was told that there were no major system problems. I know this sounds a like classic anxiety, but I know it is not. I have to say they were very good there and encouraged me to see my family physician (whom I had already been to earlier that week) again.
I called to make an appointment to have the Mirena removed the very next day. My GYN kind of shrugged off what I was going through saying that it was anxiety and asked if I still wanted the thing removed!!! of course I did. Having that thing removed was very empowering. I was feeling so helpless and it was the one thing that I could do to possibly help my situation. The feeling of relief was amazing.
I did see my family physician again who agrees that what I am going though is related to the Mirena. She did ordered a CAT scan (came back negative) just in case.
Post removal (It has been 17 days) I have been slowly getting better. My "episodes" are getting more and more diminished and further apart. I have noticed that I am flooded with exhaustion after each of these "episodes". I also never know when there going to strike making it hard to make plans. My husband has been very supportive through out and was convinced before I was that it was the IUD. He has volunteered to get a vasectomy.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL YOU LADIES.
If you have stumbled across this because you are desperately searching for answers, all I can tell you is that I believe that the Mirena IUD has had devastating effects on many, many women, but hang in there you are not alone and you are not insane. What you are experiencing is very real. Have it removed ASAP!!!!!!!!!!

I've had my Mirena for almost 3 years now, and I'm contemplating having it out. I didn't know that some of my symptoms could be linked to it, but after reading this, I have the same story as many of you.
It's been awesome having no periods, and it's nice not to worry about birth control, but I'm not sure if it's worth the side effects.
I've recently had such bad anxiety and depression that I've been seeing a therapist and have been prescribed antidepressants (I am not taking any right now because I did not like the side effects of Lexapro). There is really nothing in my life right now that should be depressing me (just got married, doing my "dream job"), so perhaps the Mirena is to blame.
I've also had a terrible time sleeping lately (for the past several months). I used to sleep like a baby. Now, I'm beginning to have to rely on sleeping drugs, and I hate that.
I've always suffered from lower back pain, but you'd think my new memory foam mattress would be helping. It's not.
I've also been super tired lately, and have had bouts of random nausea. Strangely, I also cannot handle my caffeine anymore. I used to drink tea all day, but now one cup is my limit before my head feels like it's going to explode.
Besides all that, probably the worst part is my dead sex drive. I KNOW there used to be a time when I wanted to have sex, but I can barely remember it. Being 26 and newly married is a shitty time to have no sex drive. Besides my not being thrilled about sex in the first place, it sometimes hurts! It's like the Mirena is stabbing me!

All of my symptoms have been around for approximately the past year. When I first had the Mirena put in, it hurt like HELL! I have never had a baby, so I'm sure it hurt extra for me to have it put in, but I swore right then and there that I'd never get another one put in, no matter how well it worked. A few weeks later, during one of my last periods, I passed a HUGE blood clot. Like, the size of a walnut. I mentioned this to my doctor several times, but it never seemed to concern her. The periods eventually went away (yes!!), and everything seemed to be good for several months before my current symptoms began showing up. I'm wondering why I would just be seeing the symptoms now (they started about a year after I had it put in), and not right after insertion.
Luckilly, I have not had any problems with weight gain. I've always lost a lot of hair around the house, so I'm not sure I can blame that on the Mirena. I did have some weird acne, though, in places I've never had it before (back, chest).

This thing hurt soooo much to have it put in; I'm wary of having it taken out now. I hear that it doesn't hurt nearly as much to have it taken out. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, a side note: my friend had one for a couple of years before it became lodged in her uterus and she had to have it surgically removed.

I've stopped taking Yasmin a little over 1year ago. I went to the Dr. the day before my wedding because I had a large lump in my right forearm that was really painful. They sent me to get an ultrasound done because hey weren't sure what it was. Come to find out I had a blood clot. I was only 23 and it was the day before wedding. I had to self inject my self twice a day for 5 days with blood thinners and then take coumain for 6months. I wasn't able to go on a honeymoon. I felt like a human pin cushion, getting my blood tested twice a week. Taking Yasmin was the worst thing I have ever one for myself. No one should take this B.C. and if you are you should stop. IT'S DANGEROUS! Women have died from taking. I was lucky!

I've been on Yasmin for about a year and a half now... This is my first time really using birth control. I tried BC in my teens but hated the side effects so I got off them right away. Now that I am in a serious relationship and we're both in agreement we don't want to get pregnant until after we're married, I decided to start BC. I've had a few side effects but didn't really think much about them until I went for my annual pap last week. My doctor asked how the Yasmin was going. I told him that I've noticed I have little to no sex drive. He basically said that's not typical for Yasmin. I decided to get online and research side effects, that's when I came across this website. After reading several of the responses, something just clicked... I have many of the same symptoms!

I have never in my life experienced migraines until I started Yasmin. Fortunately I've only had a few since I started but nevertheless, not fun. I do however get frequent headaches. While I'm on the subject of my head, my memory seems to have slightly diminished. I often have a hard time remembering the simplest of words, causing me to misspeak often. I even have a difficult time remembering what I did a few days before! I've always had a very good memory! Has anyone else experienced difficulty with your memory??

About 4 mos after being on Yasmin I had a really weird uncomfortable pain just above my inside ankle. A few days later that pain had traveled up to the inside middle portion of my calf. At this point the spot where the pain resided was now discolored, looked almost like a bruise. Within a few hours the pain had moved up my leg just below my knee, still on the inside of my leg, again discolored. To make a long story short I went to my doctors office and he said I had a blood clot in my leg. He told me to keep my leg elevated and apply heat that it should be okay. I haven't had any bad cases like this again but I do occasionally get a similar pain in my leg but the pain seems to subide after a day or so. Ladies, if you experience similar pains and/or discoloring on the back of your leg(s) make sure you see your Dr. This can be deep vein thrombosis which are dangerous blood clots, they can cause pulmonary embolism's- blood clots in the lungs.

In addition I've had many other side effects including: little to no sex drive, severe dryness down below (kind of causes problems in the bedroom...), slight vision problems (I usually have near perfect vision, now I often feel like my vision is blurry), odd colored periods (brownish colored), sticky mucusy periods, a very sharp yet dull and uncomfortable pain in my right breast (at least once a month), frequent Urinary Tract Infections, mood swings (had a bad one this morning, threw a fit because my hair took forever to dry- so trivial, right?), severe melasma (hyperpigmentation) on my upper forehead and the top of both cheekbones, and last but certainly not least very low energy.

I actually have a follow-up appt this afternoon with my Dr. I am going to ask him about other options for birth control. Thank you to all of you for writing about your symptoms! Your comments have really helped! Good luck to all of you!

I want to thank all for your stories...
I thought that I was nuts, and could what I am going through from this "thing".
I have to say I was pt on the Mirena cuz I had horrible periods and last year I had a blood clot, which they said was from the pill...So with a lot of pressure from my doctor (felt she got a kick back with every sell) i got it..
Now i have had this thing for 6 months and i feel nothing, I wouldn't care less for nothing..I feel like I could slit my wrists, have NO sex drive, the weight gain is crazy ( look prago), have zitz like a teenager, cant sleep yet i am so tired..I thought I was crazy..
I can say I have not a lot of pain with cramping ( maybe cuz I don't care) and light periods, but last longer. so what can I do?

Well, I've finally figured out how it is that Mirena works as birth control: if you're not having sex, you can't get pregnant. The first few weeks after having it inserted (about 2.5 months ago), I was fine - spotting pretty regularly, and having significant cramping, but nothing I couldn't handle. Then slowly I began having other side effects: dry, brittle hair that falls out in handfuls, dry skin, irritability, depression, fatigue, lack of motivation to do anything physical, extreme bloating through my mid-section (I am too terrified to get on the scale to see how much I've gained, but it's been about 4-6 dress sizes), swollen hands, migraines, and no sex drive. I mean, ZERO. My husband and I had a very active sex life which has now gone down to a couple times a month if I'm not too tired at night. I was a runner up until this summer (used to do 4-6 miles three or four times a week) and now I can't go more than a mile without becoming completely exhausted. I absolutely intend on getting it out, but ironically I'm so brain-dead tired all the time I can't seem to remember to make the phone call.

I did my research prior to getting Mirena, and read page after page of women who had extreme side effects from the hormone, but somehow assumed I would be one of the blessed few to escape them. That was big, fat, giant mistake. Bad pun intended.

Seriously this is ridiculous. I have been dealing with all of these same issues and have been debating on whether to see a counselor because I feel like I am losing my mind! My boyfriend tells me I have mood swings and my mom says she cant even talk to me anymore. I had an acquaintance at work tell me that she hopes that I am okay because I look so down. I am anxious and depressed - have to self talk just to get out of bed. During the month if I am not cramping - my breast are almost to sore to move. I read someone on hear define a side effect of vibrating sensations throughout their body I get that for at least a week and a half every month. I would describe it as how you feel when you first are coming down with the flu....kinda achey. I was actually off for a week a few months ago due to extreme vertigo. I wondered if there was a correlation...from what I read I guess so. I have severe lower back pain -sometimes to much to stand straight and walk. I am so frustrated because I was told no side effects. I had Norplant back in 1991 and gained 70 pounds in 5 months. Well I am up to 19 pounds with Mirena - it hasn't been quite a year. I told the doctors that I had significant weight gain with Norplant and developed a blood clot while using the pill. I was assured no such side effects with Mirena. Mirena was a great choice for women who cant take anything else! I feel so misled!

Prescribed Bactrim for MRSA skin infection on my arm that I picked up at my local gym. Day 1 OK, Day 2 severe headache at the base of my skull. Day 3 continued headache, general nausea, gas. Day 4 I began to develop a low grade fever and dizziness. Almost passed out after walking just a half mile. Still a severe headache, weakness. Day 5 Headache, consistent fever of 103, chills and muscle aches, light hives visible, weakness, unable to sleep. Day 6 early am, couldn't sleep all night, went to the ER with the worst muscle aches and fever I have ever had. Hives now very clear and pronounced all over my torso. I was tested for the flu. Said it was not, but was a viral infection that was attacking my muscles. Muscle breakdown found in both blood and urine samples. ER physician changed medication to Clindamycin HCL. Told to stop Bactrim, but thought what I had was viral, not a reaction to the Bactrim. I continues to feel bad for a couple more days, but hives started to reduce, fever diminished and started to feel halfway human after being off Bactrim for a couple of days. Still not 100%. New med has it's issues too (have to take every 6 hours, can't lay down after taking it) and a nasty taste in mouth and stomach upset, loose stool. After 5 days of new med went back to my doctor. A secondary infection had set up in the Staph area. The fungal infection needed a different med. Now is 4 weeks later, after finishing all meds, still have an infection. Blood cultures taken to see if the infection is the staph or fungal. I have lost 8lb, have no taste buds, loose stool, severe stomach cramps/burning (now taking Activia to put back good bacteria in my stomach...no one told me to do this before!!). If Staph not gone, need IV antibiotic for a month. I am 50 year old female, but note I had taken this in my 30's without any problems. You can develop an allergic reaction to medicines previously OK for you. Beware of Bactrim. It kicked my behind!

I am having very weird stomach pains. I've had Mirena since February 2008, and I'm always afraid I'm gonna get pregnant and either have to take it out and possibly have a miscarriage OR leave it in and the baby have defects. My husband and I were having sex yesterday and it was hurting real bad (which has recently become pretty common), then I coughed real hard and it felt like he penetrated my cervix. ??? I made him stop and ended up rolling around on the couch for 3 hours in agonizing pain after that, and I even threw up a lot! I didn't bleed or anything, and I can still feel the string in there but it still hurts today. Especially if any pressure is being exerted down there, in my stomach. If I run, if I cough, if I pee... it hurts. I want it taken out and NOW! Not to mention that I don't really have much of a sex drive anymore... Anyone else experiencing anything like this??? If so, or any advice.... please email ******

Hi I posted this on the Coumadin site when I should have been here,

I am a 66 year old female and up to a year ago I felt 20 years younger now I feel 20 years older.

I fell and broke my hip June '08. Had a hip replacement and developed a blood clot (DVT) in my left leg.

They put me on Coumadin and when that didn’t do the job they added Lovanox (another blood thinner requiring shots in the stomach).

Not only has they not helped but my blood clot is growing.

My symptoms:
daily headaches, debilitating leg pain (the pain is so bad that it is crippling me), fatigue (an overwhelming feeling of tiredness, I set down for a few minutes and wake up hours later.), loss my concentration (trouble doing simple crosswords), can’t study simple directions, numbness in toes and hands. I can go on.

And the doctors? “It’s all in my head. It can’t be the blood thinners.”

I am going to copy your blogs and take them to my doctor and demand something be done.

Thanks again to this site and all of you. I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my mind.

Shortly after beginning Yaz, I began getting dizzy at random, messy vision, fainting spells and an arrhythmia. I spent 2 days in the hospital and none fo the doctors attributed any of the side effects to Yaz, but that was the only new thing in my lifestyle. I also had been having incredible abdominal pain in the upper right area where my liver is. I have always been incredibly healthy and I started taking this to help the PMDD. Instead I am afraid that I have a frigging pending stroke coming my way or blood clot hiding in my brain making me pass out. Im scared and incredibly angry that all I did was try to get some help and instead had my life and my family's well being threatened. I am fighting to get an MRI on my head just to be sure nothings in there. I know I sound paranoid but suddenly getting an arrhythmia and passing out at random is scary. I am afraid to hold my daughter because If I faint, she'd get hurt. Another thing is at the beginning, I would dry heave a lot, but my doctor kept telling me to stick with it. She is STILL telling me this. Im stopping it tonight and joining a class action suit.

After reading these posts I am more confused than before, because my experience is so far very different. I was diagnosed with DVT about two weeks ago and now take Coumadin daily; the Lovenox injections have been discontinued. The reason I'm so confused is I now feel the best I have in 5 (five) years.

Before being placed on the anti-coagulants I had memory and concentration issues that were progressively getting worse and greatly affecting my job, and had daily headaches. I had joint pain that made it difficult to get up after sitting for awhile; they felt constantly inflamed. I felt fatigued all the time and my muscles hurt like I had really pushed them; I just didn't have any strength, and had muscle cramps. I was constantly yawning and found my jaws hurt from clinching my teeth, subconsciously trying not to yawn. I was extremely sensitive to physical touch, even hugs hurt. I also felt extremely depressed and cried almost daily. My lips and left cheek tingled, as well as other parts of my body. Plus I would get the feeling of sudden pressure in my head (different from a headache) like it was going to pop off, and I my eyes didn't seem to track what I looking at and had difficulty in remembering or comprehending what I just read.

About 6 (six) days after starting treatment it completely changed and these symptoms are essentially gone. I have talked with my doctor and pharmacist and they are baffled. I am concerned this change, while welcomed, may indicate an underlying condition that is not yet diagnosed. Has anyone ever heard of such an impact from starting Coumadin treatment?

Wow. Not sure what to think here. I was in the ER today with heart palpitations and chest pain - really bad pain. . . thought I was having a heart attack. Mine started low sort of in the stomach and worked it's way up and settled in my chest. I could breathe but the pain was overwhelming. I sat on my yoga mat in the park took a few pepto tablets, called the Dr. and after almost an hour of pushing on my diaphram and trying to breathe and ease the pain I had to get help. Guess what - like most of you I'm extremely healthy. The EKG, stomach and chest x-rays and blood work (all done today) are fine. And I've been on Yasmin for too many years to count. This is not the first time I've had tightness in my chest or palpitations. One night I thought my heart was coming through my chest for hours on end I sat straight up out of bed and went to the ER the next morning on the advice of my allergist. Again all was fine. I always thought it was some "allergic" reaction to some other test I'd had done with a reaction to dye or some other medical interaction since I tend to be allergic to many things and get allergy shots. This really makes me think about getting off this pill, and I just happened to stumble onto this when I typed "chest pain" in as part of my search. It has been less obvious for me since this has happened infrequently but twice now in a few weeks. And it is rather frightening. Best of luck to all - thanks for the posts.

Hi everyone:

I tried two 6 month bouts with Yasmin and have had terrible side effects both times. The most recent being diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. I strongly encourage everyone to listen to your bodies - if something doesn't seem right, persists, and no other explanation is available, I would strongly recommend to stop Yasmin immediately! There are a variety of other birth control pills available. I seem to not tolerate certain progestin formulations, which vary from pill to pill. You can google BCP and hormones and self educate yourself until you find a pill which works for you. I am currently looking into filing an FDA complaint for this pill. In doing so I also noted that it is currently being investigated for causing acute pancreatitis!

One more comment, I've seen in this search and others people complaining about losing feeling on one side of your body and/or muscle cramping in the legs. These symptoms can be very serious (blood clot/stroke) and you should see a doctor immediately!

I'm only 18 and I've been using nuvaring off and on for a while.
I took it out the first time because it was making me gain weight, decrease in sex drive, anxiety attacks, painful sex and i had been crying for no reason. I feel so bad for my boyfriend because I'm just now realizing that my lack of sex drive and painful sex is most likely related to the nuvaring. We've both been confused for so long and he's been feeling so bad about himself thinking its his fault :(.

This is the 2nd week I've had it in since the first time i took it out months ago and I've gotten what seems to be a yeast infection...but like someone mentioned earlier, my yeast infection tests come back negative...as do std and sti tests.
This is my second time with yeast infection symptoms and im only 18...
so, already that seems a little fishy (no pun intended).
Ive also been tested twice for all stds and sti's both times negative.

My doctor and mother don't believe any of this has anything to do with the nuvaring and tell me that i shouldn't believe what i read on the internet because most of what im reading is "rare"..but i believe it and i believe its happening to me.

im taking it out right now.
This website has been very helpful!

I just had mine inserted yesterday. I wish I would have read this before I did it. Today i started having leg pain... I did a search online about leg pain and noticed it could be a sigh of a blood clot.. I called my
Doctor and she said to take some Tylenol and if it does not go away to call her back.. It went away but I am terrified. I cant afford to gain weight or get anymore bacteria or yest infections than i already have.. Thanks for sharing your issues. I will call to have this removed on Monday... I have had a head ache since last night..

Started taking lisinopril April 6th of this year. Have had many of the symptoms listed in these posts. I just thought I was still having symptoms from being sick. I have had a lot of anxiety and depression, as well as chest pain and heart palpitations. My hands were ice cold and had severe stomach pain. My head felt very cloudy and numb. I have had every blood test possible, 2 EKG's, a brain MRI, cervical MRI and brain MRA, and a chest x-ray. So far, everything is normal. I saw this site a few weeks ago and on June 8th, I stopped taking lisinopril. I have started feeling better, not completely, but definitely better. I am supposed to go back to my doctor on the 29th. He did not agree with me that these symptoms could all be caused from this drug. He reluctantly agreed that I get off it for these 3 weeks. I am still taking Hydrochlorot with no symptoms. Not sure what to tell him when I go back. Are any of the other blood pressure drugs safe???

Sorry to post again, but NO ONE REPLIED TO MY POST!

I am 5 days post removal and need reassurance. Unlike everyone else, I have NOT felt better right away. I am just as tired (if not more), more irritable, and JUST GOT ACNE on my face and arms 2 days AFTER removal! I'm still dizzy and the brain fog is just as bad. Have not bled a drop at all.

I know everyone is different, but my removal experience has been completely different... don't feel better, no bleeding/clots, no immediate improvement. IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME??? Was it not the Mirena after all???

I started taking YAZ in May 2008, after I told my doctor that I wanted to regulate my period (basically because I was going on scuba diving trip and didn't want to have my period) - I also told him that I was kind of b*tchy lately and maybe there was a pill that could help that as well. He prescribed YAZ - I went on my trip, no period (very light periods also)... In September 2008, I went to a cardiologist for heart palpitations, chest pains, shortness of breath (never thinking that YAZ had anything to do with it). After a huge array of tests (cat scans, blood clot scans, blood work, stress tests, etc...), he didn't find anything, but advised me to take 1 baby aspirin per day. About a month later, I started getting dizzy spells. I stopped taking the aspirin, figuring that's what was causing that (still never thinking about the YAZ - basically, because I had never had a problem with any other birth control pills). I took my last YAZ in January 2009. It seemed that my ill conditions slowly stopped.... Then, last week, in June 2009, I bought a pack from my almost expired prescription because I was going on another scuba trip and my period was scheduled to come when I would be away... I took a pill on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday (got my period, but it was very light), but by Sunday, I was so dizzy again, I could barely stand up. That was 3 days ago; still dizzy, but I'm writing off YAZ for good - it seems like that was cause of my health problems and it really isn't worth it just so I can plan a vacation around my period. I will be looking into alternatives to YAZ - I would advise if you have any of these symptoms, to do so as well.... Good luck! L....

I am now in the middle of being diagnosed with a possible benign liver tumor which could also be caused by the pill. I always knew there was a risk of blood clots with any bc pill but NO ONE ever told me that desogen almost TRIPLES your risk of blood clots!!!

I don't want to scare all of you, but I thought I should share my recent experience. I am 40 years old and have never tolerated birth control pills very well. I experience major headaches that make the effects not worth the pain. As I was approaching menopause, I developed an ovarian cyst and dysfunctional bleeding and anemia. My periods could last up to 8 weeks at a time. I was desperate. I was put on Yasmin and was told to give it 3 months for my body to acclimate to this drug. I had a headache EVERY day that I was on this pill. 2-3 times a month it would flair up into migraine status. After 2 months and 1 week, I had one of those headaches that didn't go away. I went to the doctor 3 times to figure out what the problem was. I had a stroke and it was not diagnosed for 9 days due to the fact that I didn't have many outward stroke symptoms. I had a blood clot in my brain that blocked my sinus, sigmoid, and jugular veins. My neurologist said that most people would not have lived through this and that I was lucky to be alive. Please warn your friends and family. This is so dangerous. The only risk factors that I have are my age (40) and my weight (200 lbs) at 5' 7. I did not smoke, rarely drink, I'm not on medication for any other thing.

I began Yaz 10 days ago. This was my first time being on the birth control pill at all, and immediately at day 5, I experienced numbness in my left arm and leg. I saw my GP on day 7, and he wasn't concerned but said to stop taking it. Then on Day 8 I saw my gyno he switched me to Nuvaring, but I continued to have the same problem and developed a headache. He told me to take the nuvaring out and go to the ER. The ER determined that I didn't have a stroke, or a blood clot, which was the main concern. He said if it isn't better in a few days to make an appt with the neurologist. I went ahead and made one for next week because the numbness hasn't improved. I'm worried. I also read where it could be Vitamin B-12 deficiency so I'm going to get some Vitamins to take until then. I'm worried.
