Been on coumadin for a year, horrible medication. Have aches all over, legs, shoulders, back, always tired, want to be off this med. Was taking alternative meds previously...nattokinase, bilberry which are blood thinners but are also SAFE. Then I had no leg pain, no muscle pain. I now take vitamin e and fish oil with the coumadin, no interaction since I've been using them for a long time and are more beneficial than the coumadin as far as I'm concerned. What I need is a naturopathic doctor, but they are hard to find, regular mds have no clue about supplements..all they want to do is increase your prescriptions. Doctors try to scare people telling them they'll have a stroke without coumadin, but have no solution on how to prevent stroke, etc. without drugs.

I've stopped taking Yasmin a little over 1year ago. I went to the Dr. the day before my wedding because I had a large lump in my right forearm that was really painful. They sent me to get an ultrasound done because hey weren't sure what it was. Come to find out I had a blood clot. I was only 23 and it was the day before wedding. I had to self inject my self twice a day for 5 days with blood thinners and then take coumain for 6months. I wasn't able to go on a honeymoon. I felt like a human pin cushion, getting my blood tested twice a week. Taking Yasmin was the worst thing I have ever one for myself. No one should take this B.C. and if you are you should stop. IT'S DANGEROUS! Women have died from taking. I was lucky!

Hi I posted this on the Coumadin site when I should have been here,

I am a 66 year old female and up to a year ago I felt 20 years younger now I feel 20 years older.

I fell and broke my hip June '08. Had a hip replacement and developed a blood clot (DVT) in my left leg.

They put me on Coumadin and when that didn’t do the job they added Lovanox (another blood thinner requiring shots in the stomach).

Not only has they not helped but my blood clot is growing.

My symptoms:
daily headaches, debilitating leg pain (the pain is so bad that it is crippling me), fatigue (an overwhelming feeling of tiredness, I set down for a few minutes and wake up hours later.), loss my concentration (trouble doing simple crosswords), can’t study simple directions, numbness in toes and hands. I can go on.

And the doctors? “It’s all in my head. It can’t be the blood thinners.”

I am going to copy your blogs and take them to my doctor and demand something be done.

Thanks again to this site and all of you. I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my mind.

I am 19 and have had Mirena for a year in a half. They allowed me to get it, even though I have not had any children, because I have a severe blood clotting problem. (Birth control pills previously aggravated this and sent me to the hospital for a month) With the blood thinners I have to take for the clotting problem, if I was to get pregnant, it would kill the baby. With Mirena, there is an extremely small chance of getting pregnant and it regulates periods so this is exactly what I needed.
I have had no side effects at all through this year and a half besides the initial insertion pain. In fact, I'm probably the most healthy I've even been. I really don't understand how so many people are having horrible problems because of it- I forget it's even there most of the time. I'm so very sorry to all of you who have had problems, though. =( I wish you luck in getting it removed!

I'm 43 and have been on Yasmin for the past 5 years. A month ago my arm swelled up like a balloon and I have a blood clot in my subclavian vein just under my colar bone. All my doctors have pointed the cause to Yasmin. I've had no major trama or central line. I was immediately taken off Yasmin and started on blood thinners that I had to inject into myself. Since being off the Yasmin I feel much different. I'm loosing weight and am happier and I got my libido back! My nightly leg cramps have also stopped.

Not to beat a dead horse...I had Mirena put in in January of 2008 following a pulmonary embolism. I couldn't be on any birth control containing estrogen and this seemed perfect. I had it in 3 months and it was horrible. I gained a ridiculous amount of weight, I had constant headaches but I couldn't take anything because of blood thinners I was on, I got huge, painful cysts on my ovaries, I felt like I wanted to crawl out of my skin! I told my husband that the reason it was so effective as birth control was because of all of the side effects- who wanted to have sex? I had mine taken out on my birthday! It was the best decision I ever made!

I am a 29 year old female, who DOES NOT SMOKE!!!. I've taken birth control pills the majority of my adult life. However I took Loestrin 24 Fe a little less than a year...I was recently hospitalized for having DVT(Deep Vein Thrombosis) and Pulmonary Emboli....The doctors said the cause may be the birth control pills. Be careful with taking this oral contraceptive because DVT and Pulmonary Emboli is a serious side effect that can easily be overlooked by your doctor. For months I complained about swelling in the ankles and pains in my thighs. Until one day, my whole leg was swollen and was very painful while walking...I admitted myself into the ER the night before Valentines day!...I was then diagnosed with DVT and Pulmonary Emboli!!! The Doctors have taken me off birth control and now I'm taking blood thinners.

I was on Loestrin 24 for 9 months and thought it was wonderful....until I was recently hospitalized for 2 weeks with blood clots in both lungs. The doctors determined that it was the Loestrin. If anyone knows of a class action lawsuit against them, please let me know.

I had taken Jolessa for about a month and I went in to have a minor surgery like 30 minute surgery, 8 days after my surgery I was suddenly waken @ 5am with the worst pain in my chest went to ER and ended up having multiple blood clots(PE) in my lungs, was near death, and felt that way too! I and doctor believe that Jolessa had a lot to do with this. So please beware of this, I'm only 32 yrs old, and have to be on blood thinners for at least 6 months to a year, and worry daily about my life!
I too had lots of headaches, and was moody!

Within two weeks of beginning to use the Nuvaring, I developed a blood clot in my leg. It was misdiagnosed and because of that, it grew all the way up my leg to my groin. I was a week in the hospital and have to take blood thinners for six months. My leg will never be the same.

after about a week on my methadone my feet and ankles swell they diagnosed it as cellulitis but cellulitis doesnt go away w/out antibiotic treatment so the next 2x it happened i didnt get antibiotic treatment i just put my feet up and stayed off them and the methadone and the swelling went down! also after about a week i start to do random episodes of passing out once with my face in bowl of cereal and once doing dishes and this was at prescribed dosage!!! be very careful i am on blood thinners and i think the dosage builds up quicker in my system perhaps. i didn't tell doctor because they work for my pain better than anything else he has given me and its hard enough to get something that even takes the edge off my pain i have so many medical problems that three very reputable neurosurgeons refused to operate on me due to my risk of stroke and i am only 49! i have deg disk deg joint rheumatoid arthritis, bilateral neuroforaminal stenosis in lower back l4-5 and s-1 several disks that are dehydrated and dessicated , many bone spurs poking in spinal canal in cervical spine every disk in cervical spin either bulging herniated or previously operated on severe arthritis in feet toes and severe nerve damage in right foot where big toe and baby no longer can lift up neuropathy in right arm radiculopathy in left missing protein s in blood which is the protein that keeps your blood from overclotting so i have been on blood thinners since 29 yrs old and have had several pulmonary embolisms b4 age 29 and proper diagnosis and the list goes on! and yet even though i got my soc sec disability by myself w/out lawyer assistance due to list of medical problems which spoke for itself i still cannot find a doctor who will try to work with me realistically on a pain management program that even manages to take the edge off to enjoy the quality of life enough to be able to spend time with my 4 yr old granddaughter doing things like fishing and playing with her in ways that i would like such as camping amusement park rides (which they have forbidden!!!) can anybody out ther help me find a doctor who will not be afraid to prescribe something that will really work enough to put me back in the game off life ? did i mention that i need right hip replacement it is bone on bone and left isn't far behind and lower back was listed as severe bilateral neuroforaminal stenosis needing surgery also as of 2 yrs ago and also need several cervical surgeries and that i have a benign tumor in thoracic spine that cant be operated on but does still cause pain! so please if you can be of help to me/as winter is upon me now ,which as we all know multiplies most of our pain problems so speed of the essence!!!!xoxoxoxo please e-mail me if you know of any doctor who can be of real help managing pain no surgeon will touch me due to risk of stroke , i stayed awake for last major surgery it had to be done risk outweighed stroke risk if it didn't get done. i am currently on methadone 10mg 4x daily and it barely takes edge off and causes too many side effects which i wont tell dr. because it is the closest thing ive had to pain relief and have been on same dose for 4 yrs ,and my pain has no hope of improving but only the certain knowledge that it is going to get increasingly worse every day and my granddaughter only has me her grand papa and her uncle, my son, that she can depend on being ther in a good role model form as well as being her only consistent source of love ,affection and proper parenting! I love my daughter but her and her boyfriend ,my granddaughters father of course, are 2 of the most self centered people on earth and unfortunately they put their needs b4 thier own daughters on every level and in way to much detail for me to put here i need only say this combine 2 totally self centered individuals with a pretty big cocaine addiction and you will get enough with that to know my dilemma! they buy her many clothes n toys n moviiiies to keep her busy while they play but never enough food or mmeds or real needs such as affection, love ,food, drinks etc!! they both work in a hosp making great money but i have to provide my sweetie(grand baby) with food meds affection love and all the things they should be doing! this is why it is even more urgent i am able to function well w/out as much pain as possible she needs to be here with me and her pa pa in a healthy ,wholesome loving and affectionate home she loves to bake and read and learn with us she never wants to leave and it tears my heart out when i drop her home with her daddy and she cries hysterically because she doesn't want me to go and she wants to stay with me and i cant! so please help me find a good doctor who can help me function at highest level w/out pain but also as coherently and safely as possible!!??? i would be forever indebted to you for your kindness and help! e-mail is ******* please send referrals or recommendations of any and all sorts tysvm, i live in the area of erie county new york tysvm, xxxooo tysvm for all your time ,much love, pained and troubled grandma in n.y who needs your help to be able to help my sweet grandbabyxxxooo

My gyn wants me to get the mirena. I am 28 and have a blood clotting disorder for which I take blood thinners. I had an embolism while on Nuvaring in March. Anyway, because of the blood thinners I bleed 25 days out of a 28 day cycle and there is nothing they can do about it...so the gyn suggested MIRENA. I'm a bit scared because I have not had any babies yet and I DO want to get pregnant within the next 5 years and start a family. The gyn assured me that I would not have any fertility problems and that Mirena was a wonderful device. I am still skeptical. What if I become depressed? What if the cramping is too much? It seems like a lot to go through ...the insertion, the risks etc. and what if I hate it? I am leaning towards asking for the mini-pill instead (progestrin only). The idea of having something inserted into my uterus frightens me.

My sister at 39 years old recently died from the condition called pulmonary thromboembolism caused by the use of Yaz. Please if you are taking this pill and are experiencing anything negative from it, get off of it immediately. I am currently seeking legal counsel for my sisters death, I believe it is unfair that a product like this can take a human life, and no-one will be held liable. I have been told that it will be virtually impossible to bring a lawsuit against a product that has been FDA approved. My sister left behind three children who love, miss and still needed her. If anyone can give me some type of direction on how to bring a lawsuit against the manufacturer of this product please contact me asap.

Hey everyone. I just want people to be aware of how dangerous this drug is. I know there are people out there that can take this for years and nothing bad will happen to them and they love it, but just keep these things in mind before you start taking it. And keep it in mind if you are taking it now, things to watch out for. I am 25, healthy, I don't smoke and I just got out of the hospital from a pulmonary embolism caused by YAZ. I was there for a week and now have to be on blood thinners for a period of months to a year. I was lucky because if the clot would have been on the other side of everything it would've gone to my brain and I would've had a stroke. Not that it was all fun and games being in my lung. It caused 2 blood clots, one pretty big. I didn't have the classic symptoms of blood clots so the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. I had a rapid heart rate (not too fast but faster than mine is usually, it was around 90-110 bpm), I got out of breath real quickly, I had pain in my neck which turned into a really bad pain in my back when I would breathe deeply. I didn't have the swollen legs which is a classic blood clot symptom. I just want to make sure people know what they are risking when they take this pill. They say there is a risk of blood clots and for women over the age of 35 to not smoke, etc. I would recommend just not taking this pill or any birth control at all, but if you do please don't smoke and please watch for these symptoms!!

I am having difficulty breathing. I have been on plavix for 3 months and the entire time have had this problem. There is pressure and it is hard to get my breath. It gets worse if I try to move around more. It comes on like an attack. I also get bad headaches. Has anyone else out there had this problem breathing while on Plavix or any other blood thinners? Any input would be very much appreciated.

I was just discharged from the hospital on Saturday. I had been taking Yasmin for almost two years now and until recently, had no problems. Last Wednesday I went to the ER for severe pain and inability to breath with my left lung. They admitted me after finding a blood clot in the right, as a result of Yasmin! Turns out, I had pneumonia in the left and since I had no symptoms that the clot was there, the pneumonia saved my life! I too had to take those fun Lovenox shots in the stomach and now I'm on Coumadin for 6 months. I am 29 years old, never smoked a day in my life. I do not drink, I am a healthy weight and I work out regularly. I do not have a history of blood clots in the family. How could this happen especially with a drug my doctors told me was safe?

With the amount of occurrences, I'm interested in a class action lawsuit as well. I will never take a birth control pill again EVER.

Please let me know if a class-action lawsuit is ever filed against this Pharm Co because I will file a suit to get this dangerous drug off the market. Yasmin/Yaz almost took my life in January 08. My OB/GYN put me on Yaz in Oct 07 for bad periods and cysts on my overies. Within a month my entire personality changed and I started losing my hair. I experienced a complete loss of sex drive, became depressed and was either constanting crying or raging at someone. However, my adult acne did clear up. On 1/27/08 I experienced extreme pain in my calf that moved up to my thigh within 48 hrs. I went to the ER and was told that no only did I a condition called DVT (Deep Vein Thrombisis-blood clot) in my leg but that the clot had broken off and moved into both of my lungs and I had bi-lateral pulmonary embolism. I can't even describe how incredibly painful this was. I was admitted into the hospital for 1 week and was put on powerful blood thinners, which I will be on for about a year. It's now been nearly 6 months since I was diagnosed and the DVT and it is still in my uppper thigh. But am grateful to be alive. If you would like to contact me I would be glad to answer any questions regarding this situation and my email addy is ****** PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YAZ OR YASMIN OR LET ANYONE IN YOUR FAMILY TAKE THIS MED, IT COULD KILL YOU.

I don't have a side effect to report, but I have read all of your responses. Over all they are 95% negative. The only thing I am wondering, is WHY you chose Yaz to begin with.

I have been thinking about taking Yaz to help with my severe PMDD. If you don't know what that is, basically it's like the moodiness side of PMS times 10. I am euphorically happy normally, lol, kind of like how happy a cocker spaniel is when their family gets home... except I don't piddle on the floor. About 5 days before my period starts I go into a very deep depression, I bloat, I am irritable, and my entire life suffers. I cry (wail is more like it) for absolutely NO reason... blah blah blah. But once I am about 2 or 3 days into my cycle it all passes and I am back to chipper me.

Long story short, I heard Yaz is supposed to be amazing to help stabilize emotions in people like me. How many of you started Yaz just as birth control, or as an acne control? How many of you took it for PMDD and it STILL didn't help?

I had been taking Yasmin monthly for 8 months with no problems. One week I had horrible leg cramping and pains in my calf. I thought it would go away but after going to the doctor and getting an ultrasound done on my leg, it turned out to be a DVT (deep vein thrombosis). I had to go to the emergency room and be admitted for 5 days. That is also where they told me that I had 3 blood clots (Pulmonary Embolisms) in my lung. I'm only 28, healthy, nonsmoker, P.E. teacher and was diagnosed with blood clots that are from Yasmin. I have no previous health problems and no family history of blood clots. I WOULD NOT TAKE ANY HORMONES IF YOU DON"T HAVE TO!!! Yes, for some people it may not be a possibility but at least don't take Yasmin. With blood clots you can not do anything strenuous, no relaxing massages, no visits to the chiropractor, no random medication like Ibuprofen without doctors approval, no alcoholic beverages since I was on blood thinners. I was moody and miserable when this happened since I had to immediately stop taking Yasmin and was in the hospital with blood clots. Thankfully the blood clots are gone but I'm still on blood thinners and have to be very careful for the rest of my life.

NuvaRing caused me to have a heart attack at the tender age of 32. I had begun using it for the second time after the birth of my third child. My only advice is to pay attention to your body and how you feel. There were warning signs but I didn't heed them as I should have; I chalked it up to being ill. At any rate, the ring caused a blood clot to form and it traveled and blocked a major artery to my heart. As a result I am on aspirin, blood thinners, and blood pressure medicine for the rest of my life. Luckily, my response to the heart attack was quick and no lasting damage was done to my heart. I can't help but be fearful that something like this could happen again even though my cardiologist assures me that my heart is 100% normal. I do suffer from anxiety now, though i'm not sure if its related to the medications i'm on or not. Just be careful and alert your doctor if something doesn't seem right.

Howdy,

Mom from Wyoming who's daughter was a non-smoking, non-drinking 20 year old driving, full time college student and part time working young woman. She was diagnosed with polysistic ovary syndrome and she wanted to have "normal" cycles.

The OBGYN clinic gave her Yaz pack to take. After one month and a half, she developed severe headaches, began to throw up, abdominal pain, became covered in acne, anxiety at being alone, and her depression worsened. She could not sleep through the night and was fatigued for the next days activities.

On March 16th, she woke me screaming of a neck ache and demanding to go to the ER.

They did a CT scan and a MRI to confirm that they had discovered she had 2 blood clots one in each sinus area and one blood clot in the base of the brain drain. She was hospitalized for a week.

She has lost her quality of life and her independance. She will need to be on medications and blood thinners for the next 6 to 8 months (maybe the rest of her life) and NEVER use any form of birth control again.

She cannot drive, work or continue college due to the reactions of the blood clots and the pressure on the brain. Her short term memory was affected by the 2 blood clots in the sinus area. She is living in a survival mode and recalling things that happened when she was 13 years old as if they are happening today.

The doctors have informed us her sisters may be subject to the same effects if they take the same birth control.

We were lucky to have a radiologist that could read the CT scan and have us return to the ER and then a professional staff admit her to the hospital. I thank God I have my daughter and she is on the long road to recovery.

Has anyone here ever heard of anemia being associated with Toprol? Since they increased the dosage of my husband's Toprol, he has developed anemia and they cannot find a cause but every time I ask about the possibility that it could be the meds causing it (he is on coumadin, too), no one will firmly say no - always a "could be" - so just wondering if anyone else has had this experience. Thanks!

My 20 year-old daughter was hospitalized for 6 days for Pulminary Embolisms as a result of being put on NUVARING 7 weeks after having a C-section. Her OB/GYN knew she was a smoker and prone to depression, but prescribed it anyway. The hospital staff didn't know if she'd survive long enough to thin her blood enough to prevent a heart attack or stroke. Thankfully she did, but she was in severe pain and had to quit nursing her newborn due to medications. She has been told she can no longer use any prescription birth control due to the possibility of recurrence. She also STILL has to take blood thinners, 2 years later. She was originally told it should only be necessary for 6 months.

Been on Prednisone for 3 years now for ulcerative colitis. At first tolerated the drug quite well. But after a few months started to gain weight, acne. After 3 years of yo-yoing between large and low doses, each increase in dose made me feel worse. I am now at a state of osteopenia and of extreme tiredness and brain fog. I see 80yo with more energy than I. I cant walk up 10 sets of stairs without feeling tired out. I need to sleep 3-5 hours a day just in order to function. As mentioned before brain fog is amazingly bad. I'm a scientific researcher which can no longer work.

Prednisone has introduced to me what panic attacks are, mood swings, joint pain and swelling, extreme muscle fatigue and wasting, blurry vision, in habitual eating habits, depression.

This drug has ruined my life. I would have preferred having surgery to remove the colon and going to the toilet 10 times a day rather than not living as brain fog and tiredness that makes my life a dream-state nightmare.
