Some of this may be TMI for some, but I believe in not pulling the punches:
I had mine inserted 12/07 when my youngest was 8 weeks old. I had the para-guard (no hormone) previously and loved it, I didn't take into account how poorly I have done with hormonal BC in the past (2 pregnancy's on the pill, 30lbs weight gain in 6 weeks of the patch, constant 'morning sickness' with the shot, etc) all I heard was no more periods....
After doing the HGC diet (as a last resort) I am finally down to the weight I was 2 days before my dd was born. At my peak I was 20lbs more. I want to get pregnant again next spring, but I have at least 35 lbs to loose before even considering it.
I bleed 2-3 weeks out of the month- too light for even the lightest tampons, but still no fun. I have actually developed raw spots from wearing a pad ALL THE TIME since I never know when the bleeding will start.
And, best of all, I hate sex. I have always had a great sex drive (I'm 29 with four kids) but now if my husband even looks like he's thinking about it I snap at him. When I finally give in (maybe once a month!) it hurts horribly for days- two main types: even with copious amounts of lube I am still dry enough that I feel swollen and bruised. On top of that I cramp for a full day - Feels like I've been punched in the stomach repeatedly. And then the bleeding starts.
Also some (relatively mild) acne, constant, but manageable (never a problem before). Including some in the groin area that end up as boils when on a stretch mark. I had never attributed it to my IUD until reading these posts, but had never had them previously.
The only reason I've had it this long is we lost our insurance shortly after the baby was born (DH laid off after 10 years in construction) I am calling my doctor on Monday to find out how much it will cost to have it removed!
I would ( and have) recommend IUD's to all my friends, but if any have ever had a problem with any hormones- para guard it is!!

i had my mirena removed after 1 yr and 3 months. I had several problems. I had constipation, blurred vision, tender breasts, I had dull aches from my waist to my knees every day for the last 6 months also severe shedding oh and don't forget the awful acne. Im 36 come on your not suppose to break out with huge boils @ that age! Oh my obgyn tried her best to tell me its not the damn mirena I mean get real as soon as it came out i stood to get dressed and it was instant no pains. I couldn't believe it! I don't care what anyone says. I believe it was a bad option for me some ppl don't have problems with it but im telling you that thing was not agreeing with my body. I would rather take my chances hell I wasn't having sex often with that thing I was either too tired or I was in some kind of pain! All I can say day one with out it has been GREAT!!!!!!!!! So if your thinking about having it removed do it don't let the doc change your mind you know your body way better than they do.

I feel so grateful to have come across this website, I had mine inserted almost exactly 2 years ago and I take responsibility for the fact that I did not do adequate research at the time but relied on by gynae...I have never really experienced side effects from any medication I have been on so I though this would be the case with the mirena as well...well not so...
I too have battled incredibly to lose my weight since the birth of my son in Jan 2007, despite the fact that I have NEVER been this healthy in all my life, have been running now for the last 6 months and just recently completed a half marathon - so its not like I'm just being a lazy bones, have also given up my chocolate fetish since his birth.
The worst has been my skin problems. Not only to I have acne ALL the time, there is never a day that I do not have a pimple, they are deep-seated pimples which are swollen and hurt like small boils.
Also experience bloated tummy and thought it was too much carbs, have gone a more natural diet route where I avoid combining carbs and proteins and still my tummy is bloated...
Itchy feet drives me crazy, no amount of scratching relieves it!
Low sex drive...definitely
Also aggressiveness which is not like me at ALL to the point where in the last couple of months I have really considered going to seek medical advice.
It now all makes so much more sense and I will be making that appointment to have it EXTRACTED ASAP!!!!!

How can I describe my thanks to this site and everybody telling their stories? Thank you oh soooo much!!!
My not so short story: Im on my second Mirena, in total now for just over 8 years. The first Mirena was all joy, periods stopped, no side effects whatsoever. Then I got the second Mirena after I removed the first after over 5 years (my gyn recommended keeping it in for longer but I didn't want to take the risk).
And for the past 2 years my ACNE problems started, first only one or two cystic acne once a month or a couple of small ones here and there. Nothing major. But for the past year, my skin / face makes me feel like a freak. So I went to the derm, got put on Accutane, more meds with a yard long list of side affects. Had to go of Accutane cos my right eye's sight deteriorated so bad I couldn't drive home at night. Went to my house doctor, he wanted to take me of the Mirena asap and refered me to a new gyn, cos mine moved away and I was stuck. But the new gyn did not want to take it out, but rather put me on a retinoid cream, cos it wasn't the acne that caused the acne.... yea right. So 5 months I gave this retinoid cream... I feel like a freak with my face, both cheeks inflamed red bumps under the skin, large cystic acne everywhere... sigh.
But during this 5 months I found a web site acne.org and here I made friends and read stories and hoping and praying, even believing things are getting better, but they weren't. If I look at pics I took of myself 5 months ago and now... sadly things are worse. My self confidence is gone, and I don't even want to have sex with my husband with the light on!!! And then last week somebody posted on the acne site some posts regarding zinc supplements, and I read and researched more on zinc and acne and found that your skin needs zinc to be healthy and having no zinc could be because of to much copper or copper toxicity. So then I researched copper toxicity and found some web sites with references to birth control.... and a bright light went on... and I found this site...
I am glad to say I saw my normal trusted house doc again last night, and made an appointment to have the thing, Mirena, removed first thing Monday morning. I have stopped using any meds like the retinoid cream for my face and cant wait for Monday. I just hope my face returns to normal quickly.... time lines anyone? I had no trouble with acne ever until now.... and Im 35!!! Udult acne my @#$ :)
My right eye now needs laser surgery to remove a layer or something, Im seeing an eye specialist soon, and this was caused by the accutane drying up my eyes so much! :(
I will report back to let other ladies know how it went and how I am progressing... thinking of taking a daily photo of my skin for reference purposes.
Pray for me please, I really need it....
C.

I had the Mirena coil inserted April 2008.At the beginning of June 2008 i was starting to get pain in the loin area in both sides. A few weeks went by and i woke up one morning in absolute agony,vomiting and breaking out in sweat. I had to call my GP who thought that it was either a kidney infection or stones. I was prescribed antibiotics which relieved it slightly but the loin pain was always there just not as severe. In July the pain got worse so i was sent for a CT scan which came back normal. I also had blood tests and urine tests. Urine tests showed infection or blood in urine.Sept the pain got so bad that i was hospitalized for a few days and had a scan which again was normal but blood in urine. Was told kidney infection and put on more antibiotics. Also since June had been suffering terrible Anxiety,mood swings, low self esteem,tiredness and worrying about absolutely everything that i could not sleep at nights. I had a few sessions of counseling to try and combat those feelings. I also have terrible acne on my face and neck but not just pimples, they were more like boils which is not a good look especially for a 41 year old women! Then there was the weight gain. I`ve always been a healthy eater and workout 5-6 times a week at the gym but since June last year have put on 10lbs! I just feel so bloated and clothes that were loose on me are now too tight. I`m the heaviest i`ve ever been and so fed up about it as i`ve always been a size 8-10 but now 12-14.After reading this forum and recovering from yet another UTI from last week, i decided to book appoint to have my coil removed this morning. It will interesting to see if the above symptoms stop.Will let you know how things go.

I had Mirena in for about 10 months due to being 35, a smoker and in a fantastic relationship, and having children 7 and 5-just had it removed 2 days ago (Thursday Morning)...I met my boyfriend just before insertion and although he thinks I am wonderful (God love him!) I am looking forward to feeling and showing him the "REAL" me...I have always been very patient and calm and happy and emotionally and hormonally balanced (even before and during my periods!) But have progressively gotten worse over the 10 months and gained 10 pounds! I eat pretty well and am extremely active and the pounds just coming on!! So, between this crappy synthetic hormone and the weight gain...who can be happy??? I was the amazing most happy pregnant woman with both of my children for goodness sake, this shouldn't effect me this way!!! For the most part up until a couple of months ago, our sex life was still active, but started to subside (on my end) I've had NUMEROUS UTI's and some of them were just feelings of them but no bacteria so I decided enough was enough...now 2 days after removal I am bleeding heavily (heavier than ever, bled right through tampons and soaked my shorts...thank heaven I am off work this weekend!!) But the way I look at it is I am just getting rid of all the crap this Mirena has caused my body to undergo and I am excited to get back to myself again. My children noticed I wasn't normal and my boyfriend, well, I am looking forward to showing him the "true" me...if he thinks he loves me now then he's in for it...lol!!!! Good luck to all of you ladies who are also having the problems with this stupid thing...but keep thinking positive, I believe it will make our transition back to ourselves much easier and quicker!

I work in a health care system and we have used levaquin for this last cough, cold and flu season. It has worked wonders for the various upper respiratory infections.
No one has developed rashes, boils, or bone/muscle pain. After reading the first response, her abnormal reaction sounds more like a bad case of shingles.
Then, I read the last post where the person drank two glasses of whine to help with the blah blah blah. Mixing alcohol with any type of medication will not help with Your sypmtoms were a "full fledged panic attack" as you stated from the beginning.
Nothing but idiots posting here!

I was on the medication for several days. I developed a rash that traveled down my blood vessels on the outside of my body. It both hurt & itched. I went back to the doctor & he had doctors & nurses from all ends of the clinic coming to look at me. The rash was diagnosed as vasculitis & was the worst case they had ever seen. One of the doctors even did a biopsy on one fo the larger masses, but it was negative. They had never seen anything like that before. It took 9 months to get over the rash - like big boils that were on the blood vessels. It was so unsightly that I wore pants all summer long. Fortunately I only had it on my arms & legs. I now have scars where the boils had been.

Amber here again... today is week 4 since having Mirena removed. Yesterday I started my first period (yay!). Although, I recommend stocking up on "super" feminine products. I've always had a light flow, so I get regular tampons and use maybe 1 per day. That assumption was a mistake. I've gone through 4? 5? I've lost count, and ruined a pair of underwear. I finally wised up and put on a panty liner (just in case).
My skin is silky soft.. no more big weird boils on my back, chest and face (that would never pop, they just sat there and festered). The B.O and vaginal odor (both caused by constant and excessive sweating) is GONE. I even go on hour long bike rides and I still smell like deoderant. It's totally amazing.
My 4 month pregnant tummy went down the first night of having Mirena removed and I had my shape back, even if I am heavier. I can actually feel my stomach muscles again. Thank God.
I haven't lost any weight, I haven't tried quite frankly.
I've noticed some increase in sex drive, although not huge yet. Sex doesn't seem disgusting anymore. That's a plus.
I can't comment on mood swings, because I've been on Prozac for 2.5 months and you can't just stop taking it. I am planning on weaning, but I heard you get a Mirena Crash so I have been continueing for now.
Let me just say that before I went on the prozac I experienced depression I'd never felt before, especially during PMS... I have never ever felt that in my life it was the most bizarre thing.
My sex drive is probably also effected by the Prozac.
Most people have said they felt like they were in a 'fog' while they had the Mirena in. I've noticed increased spaciness since having it removed. I frequently walk into a room and forget why I went there. This happens to everyone I'm sure, and myself even, but not ALL the time.
I had Mirena from Sept 2006 until March 2008.
I didn't start experiencing such awful side effects until Sept 2007 (a year into it). Altho, I DID gain 20 lbs by the year mark. And all in my gut.
Anyway hope this helps.
Amber

I had the Mirena inserted in March of 2007. I was required to sign a release form before they would insert the device. That seemed very strange as no other birth control method I have ever used required a release form.
My former OBGYN Nurse Practitioner had no experience implanting the Mirena into a woman that had not yet had a baby. But she went ahead and did it anyway. It was immediately painful. I cried while it was being inserted. The Nurse gave me an NSAID and sent me home. I wallowed in pain for several days-to the point of screaming and crying at the same time. I called her to ask for something stronger. She told me just to take some Tylenol. For those of you who have had the Mirena, you KNOW it's not the type of pain that can be solved with Tylenol. She is a QUACK. Her name is Leda Riley at the Women's OBGYN center in Cookeville, TN. Yeah, for your sake, NEVER go to this woman. She does not listen nor does she care if you are suffering.
I actually had to call my general physician, who is much more understanding. She prescribed Tramadol (which makes me itch, as it is a narcotic drug) and also 600 mg tablets of Ibuprofen (which are hard on my GERD). But these worked a heck of a lot better than tylenol.
Before the Mirena, I had perfect skin-the type that looks airbrushed in a magazine. Now, I have redness, acne, blackheads and boils. My dermatologist has tried everything, including spot treatments of super strength benzoyl peroxide (10% and higher) to rid me of the acne. Nothing works.
The hair is another thing. There are these inch long hairs growing like mad on my neck and chin. I actually have to shave, cut or chemically remove these hairs. I had no such hair growth prior to the Mirena.
My moods swing wildly and have led to obsessional thoughts. My anxiety is so horrible that I have had to be put on Zoloft. This is really difficult for me, as I am a student Mental Health Counselor. In other words, I know what is going on-the contraindication between my body's hormones and natural chemicals to this Mirena.
Also, I have gained nearly 40 pounds from the Mirena. I don't eat much. We're talking 2 rice cakes for breakfast with water; no lunch and a kashi meal for dinner or a similar low carb dish. I don't drink sodas. I don't eat high carb foods. I don't consume mass amounts of sugar. Then, I look at the rotund version of what used to be my beautiful and curvy figure in the mirror. What I see makes me so upset that I just cry.
I know that what is going on with my body is wrong. You can feel it way deep down on a level that seems so basic, so subconscious almost. With the 3 week long periods, followed by spotting for another week, then back to the period---I am ready to have my old period back. In fact, I WANT it back. I don't care, just so long as I don't have to wear damned tampons any longer than 5 to 7 days per month! (Can I get an Amen?)
This was originally supposed to prevent pregnancy (although I have had one ectopic pregnancy with this thing already). I had good intentions, but this is horrible. If you look VERY closely at the patient info on the Mirena, you'll find out that the researchers and developers of this IUD have absolutely no idea how this thing really works (hence the release form?).
If you do decide you want to get the Mirena, please read the blog spots about the real deal behind this thing. There are other options with much less pain and change. Think very hard and remember that no matter your decision, there are hundreds of women supporting you everywhere.

I hope someone can help me. I developed a couple of boils in my inner thigh area and my doc did not want to drain them until he tried one last remedy, Sulfamethoxazole. I began taking 2 giant pills a day exactly 12 days ago. The medicine helped the with the boils a lot. They seem to be down to pea size. I suffer from Generalized anxiety disorder and Panic Disorder and I can honestly say that this medication induces anxiety in people. I woke up in the middle of the night about 2 days ago shivering uncontrollably and could not move from the spot I was shivering in. I think I broke a tooth from the chattering of them. I did not think anything of it because I figured it was a nightmare. This morning when I woke up, my body was really sore. My back was killing me and I had a rash on the back of both hands and around/on my feet. I could not get a hold of my dermatologist so I called a couple pharmacies and they told me to stop taking the medicine and take a benadryl. I took the advice and am now wondering if I am allergic to sulfa or maybe this is all a side effect from the pills. I am now terrified about all this because I just read about a disease called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. If anyone has input, please post. Thanks
-John
P.S. I currently take Klonopin and Paxil CR incase needed to know.

Get over yourselves. Those 'other' problems could be caused by a variety of things and not necessarily have anything to do with kenalog. I LOVE the stuff! I've received it several times for trochanter bursitis in both hips, for inflammation/pain relief in my right shoulder due to shoulder/rotator cuff reconstruction, my foot for affects of severe gout, carpal tunnel in both wrists, and several other times for inflammation/pain that cannot be treated with oral anti-inflammatories due to diabetic gastroparesis. Mind you, I do suffer from bad stomach cramps for a few hours post injection, but other than that mild side effect, the medication is FANTASTIC and successful in treating my numerous problems. I think you're all just looking for excuses to whine about your problems rather than being glad that you at least have someone trying to help you.
I will recommend kenalog to anyone looking for relief of symptoms I've mentioned. My success rate is 95% +. Sometimes it takes more than one shot or being the individuals we are, we suffer some effects that aren't usual, ut this is no reason to crap on an excellent product that has helped so many, so often.
So get over yourselves and quit your pouting.

I have had many different reactions from this drug. I was given the prescription for osteomylitis from a compound toe fracture. I had 2 infection strains and after the Augmentin only cured one strain, this drug was a last resort to kill the other strain. It works, but I am getting boils in the genital areas, having abdominal cramps, extreme joint pain and weakness even after 2 weeks of being cured. My alimentary canal will be in pain much like mild cholitis for months but the toe appears to be saved, and that is definitely a miracle in itself. I am a 7 day a week exerciser, and my life has been altered emotionally and physically after taking this nasty drug. I recomend not using this for any reason.

I'm prescribed doxycycline 100mg 1-0-1 for five days.
I'm alergic to tetracycline group of medicines. After taking Doxy... for two days I noticed a rash on right hand armpit, rash on my penis tip which give me irritation/itching. This rash on penis tip further developed into continuous ozzing pus on penis head. I'm not comfortable with this itching and I've to play with my penis to make it more comfortable feeling. On third day I found my undergarment having large spots of pus. I had loose motions coupled with severe stomach pain. I also noticed boils on my right foot anckle.

This drug will lower your blood pressure, and steal your health and happiness in return. Is it worth it? It's hard to imagine when there are alternatives.
From both personal experience as well as reading this website, lisinopril is linked to depression and anxiety. It boils my blood to find doctors adding Zoloft for this, when there are other blood pressure medication that don't have 57 pages of complaints against them.
In my case, I became extemely agitated, having the feeling that something was wrong in my abdomen and getting worse every day. My doctor prescribed Paxil, which calmed me down, but I felt didn't address the root of my (abdominal) dysfunction and I didn't need the extra complications of Paxil added to my situation. I decided instead to quit the lisinopril, though by the time I figured that out, it had already done long term damage.
Lisinopril is also linked to weight gain and energy/metabolism and fat burning problems. Poor fat metabolism is closely linked with diabetes.
It seems to me that after loosing control of fat burning, your glucose control mechanisms will get overloaded and be the next to fail. The next thing you know your doctor will be telling you about concern over diabetes. Mine did, and as another poster noted in a similar occurance, there is no diabetes in my family history. Further, I don't have a sweet tooth, and don't eat any refined starches either.
Lisinopril is linked with lung troubles; the cough is known by most doctors. Of course, lung problems make it even more difficult to burn fat. (In my case, I had the cough for 1 and 1/2 years after I quit lisinopril, which I only took for 3 months for borderline hypertension.)
Basically, if you catch the side effects of this medicine, you will be several steps closer to diabetes.
People who catch the side effects seem to take varying amounts of time to succumb to lisinopril. From reading this website, it can take anywhere from immediately to 2 years before the first side effect is noticed. (In my case it took only 2 months, but my doctors refused to suspect the lisinopril, so I stayed for on it 1 more month while it ate away at my health.)
Some never seem to get the side effects, or they get one but manage to control it for years and years. To them I say, more power to you! (Still, though, be suspicious of lisinopril if you start heading toward diabetes).
Many people continue to take lisinopril even after the first side effect appears. (I did.) I think this is a huge mistake - stop taking any med when it interferes with some major organ & function, like lungs & breathing!!
At the time I was on lisinopril, I didn't know these problems were side effects, however, I now know to suspect any drug that has this number of complaints! Now I'm thinking: Try quitting such a drug as a first alternative instead of adding Zoloft or Paxil, even if it has been working fine for a years.
Over time, I have personally found the following natural remedies helpful for me in combatting the lisinopril-caused damage:
* zinc - for the lungs/cough
* manganese - for digestive function and sexual function
* vit-b complex - for energy
* extra biotin - for lungs & energy
* chromium (not too much though) - for energy
* L-Carnitine (aka vit-T) - for fat metabolism
* L-Glutamine - for digestive repair
* Calcium/Magnesium - for digestive function & for bp
(Note that remedies to help diabetics have many of these ingredients.)
Recently, I also have passed a number of gallstones, and am not sure how they are related to the lisinopril and its side effects and conditions. I suspect they pre-existed my lisinopril usage, however, I first started having the gallstone pains (on my right side) while actually on lisinopril, so it at least aggrevated the problem. I have been using the olive oil natural treatment to flush the stones.
As always, best of luck to all.

hi all-
well, i was on yasmin for one month. i had severe side effects: racing heart, upset stomach, insomnia, headaches, boils on face and back, lack of energy, and mood swings. i called my doctor and she said that all of these side effects are not 'normal' and that i needed to get off right away. so, she switched me to ortho lo. what a difference it has made! i feel great. so, for all of you that are wondering if the side effects are 'normal', i would suggest contacting your doctor and see if you should get off. it sure made a difference in my life.

I had almost 1 & 1/2 years of Zometa treatments. This past year I experienced almost unbearable tightness & pain in my chest, which was mis-diagnosed as "costochondritis". Then the lower part of my chin & lip went numb-I began breaking out in boils, plus severe muscle cramping, not to mention several bouts with the flu-like symtoms. Late last summer I started coughing a lot & having breathing problems. I was diagnosed with "dypsnea". I
have a blocked airway and am on a nebulizer 2-3 times a day. My
oncologist took me off Zometa & I haven't had a treatment since October but my life is still hell.

I was diagnosed with MRSA stemming from a severe outbreak of boils. After surgery, I was prescribed Sulfameth due to continuous outbreaks. Within the hour of taking first pill, I started itching from head to toe. Benadryl did nothing to relieve the itching. My face got swollen and my eyes were severely bloodshot. I'm 32 years old and NEVER had a reaction to medication until I took Sulfameth.

Just made an appointment to have my Mirena IUD removed. It was approaching the five year mark of having it anyway, but an acquaintance recently told me about the side effects that she experienced while using the mirena and many pieces of a puzzle started coming together for me. I got my mirena after the birth of my first (and only) child. Since then I have had terrible mood swings, anxiety, depression etc. I feel easily overwhelmed and quick to anger. Treatment to address these issues has been unsuccessful. While I haven't experienced the headaches, bloating or acne that others describe here, I have experienced a profound loss of sex drive (I have a very patient and supportive husband), painful intercourse (which I initially attributed to child birth), cysts/pimples/boils in the groin area, IBS-like symptoms, and moderate to severe cramping in my legs. (Specifically, my calves, feet and thighs. The thigh cramps are the worst! Always in the middle of the night and very, vert painful to the point that I cry out.) I haven't had a proper period in years and that can't be good. So, I've informed my doctor that I DO NOT want another Mirena. I will still opt for an IUD as my birth control method, but would never use this product again or recommend it to others. This website was a revelation. You know that you're not imagining all of these things happening to you, but you start to think you're a tad doolally for attributing it to your IUD. When I read the posts here, I knew that I wasn't mad and that this IUD has probably been the source of many of my emotional and health difficulties in the past 5 years. Can't wait to get it out!!!! Good riddance!!!!!
