Hi All,

In addition to what I wrote earlier if you do have a history of hypokalemia (low K+ or potassium) that is very serious for that electrolyte controls cardiac and renal function. However, it is quite simple while you are on this antibiotic to increase K+ rich foods such as bananas, baked potato, OJ, whole milk, avocado (which has more K+ than 5 bananas) and do so judiciously during your therapy for infection.

It is also significant to alert anyone that infection (bacterial) causes some fairly significant physiologic issues from fever, to myalgia, vomiting and loss of fluids, and organ impairment. This antibiotic like Ciprofloxacin has a huge ability to permeate bone infection and non circulatory areas that most antibiotics never reach. It is important to understand that if you are feeling that ill to require that antibiotic you may not be getting around to feeling "normal" until you are past taking the medication, follow up with your provider and rid yourself of the infection.

When you end an antibiotic early or play games with such a drug you can rebound to a super infection that is not treatable by the same antibiotic or even anything more powerful and after this drug you are talking IV antibiotics in a hospital setting.

I would strongly suggest if you are handling secondary side effects then continue onward for the result of an infection out of control is anything but desirable.

I do run low on K+ either and find that Cipro is more K+ wasting then Levaquin. I also am on the smallest dosage (250 mg. QD) and having a positive result but yes, the lovely side effects. In another few days though when done those will be gone and I might feel 100% human again.

I am a professional nurse with extreme allergies; however, please for you own benefit consult your physician but do not stop taking it unless he or she states adverse or of course, you have some reaction requiring emergency medical assistance (911).

Yes I am dizzy, weak, very nauseated (and with my emaciated body frame due to other health issues cannot afford to not eat), and the first 2 days of therapy got a whopper headache. However, I had a UTI that likely moved into the kidneys and also look to have stones and after 8 days am passing urine properly and not up every hour not passing urine; hence it is killing an infection that might kill me.

Early on with this drug we did prescribe higher dosages then perhaps necessary they have now cut back quantity and instead of doing BID dosing do QD dosing. You might require a lower dosage at my body weight they prescribed only 250 mg. a day and this has given me some side effects but is treating an infection that could be fatal...

I have been taking Levaquin for about 2 months now. I first started
it with high doses of the IV form through a pick line for
Osteomyelitis (Bone infection). I then went on pill form 500mg a
day. The whole reason I got Osteomyelitis in the first place is
because I have no feeling in my right foot and allot of Neurological
damage to my right side due to Spinal Bifida / and a Tethered Spinal
Cord which was released last year but I've only gotten worse since.
Anyway I just found out about all these bad side affects from
Levaquin and now I'm scared. About 2 weeks after starting the
medication I noticed pain my knees and especially in my fingers. The
pain is overwhelming at times. I'm not sleeping even with sleepaids.
Also the skin on the bottom of both my feet is peeling off in big
hunks. I think it Could be from the Levaquin? I'm also freaked out
because I've read that if you have been exposed, more than once, to
this drug or ones like it.... your chances of having permanent
damage is much greater. This is the 3rd time of taking high doses of
these meds. (2 months of Levaquin IV form 5 years ago, 2 months of
Cipro IV form, 3 years ago and now this time. I went to my Dr. 3
days ago and explained my symptoms to him. He kept leaving the room.
First time for 10 mins. 2nd time for over 30 mins. My husband was
with me and went to the bathroom while the Dr. Was out the 2nd time
and when my husband came back he said he past a conference room
where my Dr. And 3 other Dr.'s were there discussing my case. The
Dr. Finally came back in and said to stop taking the medication and
my symptoms would just go away. I haven't taken the drug in 3 days
and still have major pain and can't sleep. My feet look horrible! I
don't know what I should do now!! Please give and information you
have!!!

I took levaquin for 30 days for a bone infection in my toe as a result of an injury. I began to notice that I had joint pain in the morning when I first got out of bed. I thought it was strange, since I'd never experience that before. I then noticed that the pain continued all day long. I then started having trouble sleeping, had weird dreams when I did sleep, and starting feeling anxious. I read the side effects and found out that these are all side effects of levaquin. I was taken off the drug and after about two weeks the pain began to subside. I'm now experiencing some weird sensations in my arms and legs and wonder if this is somehow related to the Levaquin. Scary stuff.

Hi my name is Angie i was 15 at the time and a only child from a single parent when my mom was put on 60mg of prednisone because she was diagnosed with a blood disorder called ITP(idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) she had been hospitalised for about 2 weeks and then was released but still was on the prednisone as time went by my mom had to stop working, she gained about 100 pounds on a very small framed body, her hair grew very fast, tremendous stretch marks, mood swings, just about everything on the list. She was to have a Splenectomy on Sept 13 2005 she had her surgery and it went perfect and was shortly released. 1 week after surgery she was having very severe hip pains, we took her to the hospital and she had X-rays and all sorts of tests done but nothing was found so she was sent home with pain meds. 2day later she was taken back to the hospital the pain had gotten worse, while at the hospital she had been told she had a fractured pelvis and was put on bed rest and given MORE pain meds. The doctor had mixed the 2 medications given and they counteracted eachother.During the 3 days she was home she had overdosed on pain meds because they counteracted eachother. On Sept 27 she had a meeting with her surgon and was admitted to the hospital for a drug over dose and broken pelvis. She had a bone scan and the doctors found she had also 3 broken ribs a broken tail bone and a bone infection. HOW? you may ask.... because the prednisone made her bones very weak and the weight she gain, her body collapsed on itself. My mom put herself into a coma for 2 weeks and was in the ICU for 3 weeks. She is now awaiting surgery because her hip is collapsing because of Avascular Necrosis she is bed ridden and is very heavily sedated...my mom hasnt been home in over 4 months I just wanted to tell my story in hope that people will listen and that no one will have to go through this just as I am.
