I wish the company making this crap would admit they've shortchanged patients with the purported "brand name" Toprol XL. It is not the old stuff, clear and simple. They're selling fraudulent medication, probably the old generic crap that almost killed people -- and, in some cases, actually did kill people.

This company needs to be run right out of the race. Toprol XL is being marketed falsely. it is not the same medication as it was before the "shortage" arose.

Something is wrong with the "brand" Toprol XL 25 mg. I had no problems with it before and only had complaints when the pharmacist switched me to the generic version of this drug back when all the problems with generic metopropol were being reported.

Now I fear they are selling some of that generic formula and marketing it as "brand name" Toprol XL. How else to explain the exact symptoms reappearing that had first occurred when I was taking the generic? Of course it could always be just coincidence, but when drug companies are involved, I don't think so...

I am going to add something here that I think is very important. Although the BRAND name Wellbutrin can have side affects, the GENERIC form has been creating a lot of problems. I was one of those.

I had started on the generic form of Wellbutrin, and I had side effects: kind of rush and hyper feeling, jittery, and agitation. Then came the extreme itching. My feet itched like you would not believe and then it spread to the palms of my hands - then everywhere.

The Brand Name Wellbutrin does not do this to me. I am on that now, and most of the side effects i had with the generic are gone. I found information on the generic about creating problems for those who had been on the Brand Name and swithched to the Generic and brought it up to a doctor. After allowing my body to wean off the generic and made sure I had no more hives - I started with Brand Name Wellbutrin. If you are on the generic and have these symptoms, please let the FDA know.

Also, some people actually go through some type of withdrawl symptoms when switching from one drug to another. I do know that they found that the generic actually releases the medication a lot quicker then the brand name perscription. Wellbutrin Brand Name has a slower and more gentle release from what I have been able to tell. If the bupropion (the base name for this drug) metabolises in your liver a lot more then some medication and it is being released too fast, perhaps this is causing the itching reaction? Just a thought.

What a bummer! I've been on Wellbutrin XL 300mg (150mg at night, 150mg in the morning) for almost 3 months. I found this site running a search on "shortness of breath Wellbutrin" because this is definitely a fly in the ointment. The shortness of breath isn't constant but it is definitely bothersome. I've had to cut WAY down on my coffee consumption and am about to quit completely, but I also starting to wonder of sugar doesn't cause some of problem as well.

About 1 month ago, I had a very scary episode that I now believe is def. a result of caffeine, Wellbutrin and possibly sugar not mixing well. I was at Barnes & Noble and met a friend for coffee. I drank a grande peppermint mocha (two shots of espresso + a good dose of chocolate and sugar syrup). During our conversation I couldn't help but notice a sudden-onset of increasing nasal congestion to the point where I was having to mouth breathe for the rest of our conversation/visit. After she left, I spent the next 20 minutes finishing up some Christmas shopping, all the while the shortness of breath continued to progress. Finally, as I was checking out, I said to the sales clerk, "I'm sorry, but I need to sit down NOW before I fall down!" because even though I was breathing very deeply I felt I wasn't getting any air, my ears started ringing LOUDLY and things were starting to go dark so I HAD to sit down - and then *lay* down - right there in front of God and everybody. Freaked them and myself totally out! I am 40 years old but in excellent health and have NEVER had ANYTHING like this happen.

So short story long, I had to lay there for 10 or 15 minutes before I felt well enough to get up. My husband came to get me and we went to my M.D. as soon as possible but it still took a couple of hours before I got in to see him. All the while I experienced waves of breathlessness and weakness interspersed with periods of feeling almost normal. I felt like I had the flu - that sort of out-of-body weirdness that goes with having a fever - but EVERY test he ran came back normal - no flu, no fever, glucose, urine, blood and EKG tests all came back PERFECTLY fine. When I started crying b/c I was so scared and still felt so awful and mentioned that my father's side of the family has trouble with blood clots, he consulted with his colleagues in the office and referred me to the emergency room of the hospital he's associated with to have additional tests run that he could not do in office and it was after hours.

4 hours later and ALL tests run AGAIN, PLUS sonograms to check for clots in my legs and a CAT scan to make sure I didn't have a clot in my head, I was pronounced 100% perfectly healthy and fine. Great. Nice wellness check-up: only $2,000. :b~

So this afternoon I gulped a bag of M&M's in record time (I'm healthy, not a saint) and then lay down for a nap. Sinus congestion rapidly set in along with shortness of breath. ENOUGH ALREADY. So I went to Google and that brought me here. Lo and behold, I'm not the only one. Trouble is, I really, really like the Wellbutrin. I'm going to cut out caffeine and sugar completely and see what happens. I'll report back in a week or so and leave my findings.

Best of luck, everybody!

I posted on January 1st and I'm sorry to say...it got a lot worse. Later in the day, around 10pm I had all the symptoms of a heart attack. Chest pain, strange sensation in my head with cold sweat that moved through my body head to toe, feeling like I was going to lose consciousness, feeling of impending doom. I immediately took 3 baby aspirin and told my husband what was happening. I went to the emergency room where they kept me overnight. My blood pressure, usually low, was 159/100 and my heart would fluctuate wildly from 60-100 bpm. After taking blood, chest xrays, cardiogram, and nitro patches and lopressor, I was overjoyed to hear it didn't seem to be my heart. The doctor at the hospital immediately ordered me NOT to continue the Wellbutrin.

BTW, I also was having lots of hair loss, too. Hairs in my hand each time I ran my fingers through it. I am hoping this will stop as I am now off Wellbutrin completely.

I take all of this to be a side effect of the Wellbutrin. Please be warned about this. And if you do have side effects, do what is posted on your prescription information: "You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088." They need to know about this.

SO glad to have found this blog! I recently started taking the lactaid pills to try and eat dairy again, after cutting out for nearly 4 years. It has been a rough two weeks! I took the pill three different times and each time I have had terrible chest pains, bloating, heartburn and nausea. Was sure I was going to be ill at one point but just suffered through some major stomach cramps and nausea. I told my acupuncturist about this and he suggested that it may be the Lactaid pill causing the problem and not the milk I was ingesting. I truly feel worse taking the Lactaid pills than I do if I eat dairy. The nasty effects of the pills has been lasting for 3 or 4 days after I take them. I have been using another brand name of the lactase enzyme pills - from my local drug store.

I'm just hoping I can feel better before Christmas tomorrow (I took the Lactaid pills 2 days ago). Glad to know that I am not alone.

I had a terrible experience with the generic form of Wellbutrin. I felt a weird "rush" sensation and after taking it for a few weeks, developed crazy itching and rashes. The weird "rush" could have been from the fact that the generic form of Wellbutrin releases more quickly then the brand name does.
The FDA now is aware of this. I also had some agitation with it.

The name brand - I am fine at a low dose. Just enough to take in the morning. I have always been told that when first starting this medication, a low dose is a must - then building up to 300 or more is the usual method. This medication is not for anxiety, and sometimes can create some of that. If a doctor puts you on a high dose in the first start of the medication, ask to start with a lower dose and then build up. When you do go higher = start with taking two every other day.

I started with generic Wellbutrin SR in November (150 mg for first three days, 300 going forward). I felt great, but very jittery. I didn't mind the jitters because almost immediately my depression lifted, my mood got so much better, my appetite lowered and I had tons of energy. I was thrilled. However, 10 days into taking it, I broke out in hives. I stopped taking the medication and the hives went away. Two weeks from the breakout, I started on brand name Wellbutrin XL (150mg). It's day 11 today and so far (knock on wood), no hives. The experience on the brand name is very different. Granted, I'm on half the dose, but the positive affects are coming on much more gradually. I feel better and much more in control of my emotions (particularly, irritability). Though I have more energy, it’s not as much as I had on 300 mg of the generic. My appetite is under control. I don’t think about food all the time. I'm going to stay on 150 mg for a month and see what happens. This dose might to the trick. I searched online for success stories of individuals having allergic reactions to generic and not to brand name. There are a few and they gave me hope b/c I liked this medication so much. So, for those of you, who have a similar experience, talk to your doctor. I still have Claritin in my purse just in case, but I’m hoping that the brand name won’t cause any problems.
Good luck!

My husband was prescribed Toprol, and received the generic by a certain manufacturer. Toprol seemed to work okay, but hubby added 25 mg of my Atenolol to 'help' keep things under control... then pharmacy switched manufacturers, AND MY HUSBAND'S BP WENT SKY HIGH AGAIN... it was as if there was NO control.... We quickly gave him my Atenolol again, and within a few weeks I called pharmacist while waiting for doctor's appointment to come up.... She gave hubby the NAME BRAND TOPROL, and within two hours, HIS BP WAS DOWN. Husband has appt. w/ doctor this Friday, and will explain situation. We know it is not wise to take anther's prescription, but when BP is 195/145, and a person can't get in to see their doctor, what do you do ????? I am hoping the doctor will LISTEN, and BELIEVE that the generic Toprol IS NOT THE SAME AS THE BRAND NAME......

I've been taking the generic for Wellbutrin (Bupropion HCL XL) 300mg QD since January 2009. My gynecologist put me on this with a combination of progesterone only birth control in order to increase my sex drive (and I believe I recently found the cause of the loss of libido - Yaz BC). Anyway, the combination has not helped the libido at all - still just not there anymore. I'm very jealous of those of you who have reported an increased sex drive. I wish that was the case for me. However, the only side effect I've really been experiencing is shakiness of my hands (think Parkinson's). It sucks because I play violin, but since it's the only symptom, I can't really complain. I feel better in general, like an overall feeling of well-being and I can't remember the last time I had a mood swing or bout of unnecessary crying. No hair loss here. Although, I have lost some weight over the months, but not exactly sure if it's related to the Wellbutrin. I'm 25 years old.

Hello all! It it is nice to hear I am not alone. I had no idea what this Lamictal was doing to my body. My stomach blew up so large it looked like I was 3 to 4 months pregnant and my stomach was hard as a rock.I also felt a lot of pressure inside my stomach and my breathing was sort of shallow and short of breath. I thought it was just from the 15lb weight gain from the drug but One day I had to face what was happening to me. I looked in the mirror and was like "OMG help me!" I was definitely not pregnant so I had to rule this out. My Mother came over and was really alarmed and terrified. Her Mother died of Ovarian Cancer and is one of the latter symptoms. She made an appt. with the gyno the next day and all checked out to be fine and healthy they recommend me follow up with a gastrointestinal doctor. Oh Lord, I said to myself...more doctors!! It all seemed so unbearable. My friend Mary of 20 years with Bipolar told me the same exact thing happened to her when she was on Lamictal. Her stomach got so large (and she is thin to normal everywhere else) A lady in a store asked her when she was due!! Can you imagine?????
Another side affect that has been completely disabling is leg pain in both legs. I have had Fibromyalgia for almost 10 years and thought it was a new or unrecognized symptom which can happen. Or sciatic pain in the legs that would never leave even though it felt very different. It wasn't a radiating pain, it was like a deep, deep excruciating aching pain, more like nerve pain vs. muscle pain that never went away. The leg pain was so excruciating thank God I had pain meds which I was taking for my fibromyalgia symptoms,, I fear the absolute worst of what I would have done to get out of this horrorfying pain. I had MRI and Cat scans and nothing showed. My pain meds were being increased and I was becoming more and more dependent, I could not live nor function with out them. The weight gain and looking 4 mos. pregnant nearly sent me over the edge as I struggle with an eating disorder as well. I went off the Lamictal about a 1 week ago, miraculously my stomach has gone down a lot especially at the top of my rib cage, I can feel my waist line now and do not have that pressure inside my stomach anymore. The leg pain has also miraculously gotten 85percent better! I can't believe it... I am so grateful. Coming here to this site really helped me know that this drug or any drug can cause so many horrible side affects and make you feel so alone.Thank You all for taking the time to share.

What brought me here tonight to write was to find this man's post I read last night that I could not find today and could not get off my mind. I pray he stumbles upon mine someway somehow! He wanted to find some one who may have also experienced this severe and excruciating leg pain and was pondering over surgery to singe the nerve's in his back. He was wondering if it could be the lamictal! Anyone who believes in prayer please say a quick one, that this man may find the info. he needs before taking such drastic steps.

I also suffered severe itchiness especially after coming out of the shower. I have tried every bodywash and lotion on the market in search of what would make it stop.If you are wondering Aveeno is the best hands down.

Whew...enough out of me! Thanks to all for all your help. Stay Well!
Blessings:)
K.

I am also one of the many here who is grateful to find this site. I have only been taking 10 mg daily for a few months, but have started to have muscular cramps in very odd places; around my ribs and sides, and lots of foot and calf cramps. I have also had three scary incidents of cramps near my heart, I have to get up and stretch and they go away., but one of the cramps felt like it was seizing up my right kidney at the same time as my chest; very strange. I also have a hard, hacking cough that literally causes me to wet my pants, it's just very awful and inconvenient. Some days, my head feels like it is splitting open from the cough. The cough/gag cycle in the morning is very upsetting. I also have noticed that I am very short of breath, and also find that to be very annoying, as it interferes with my work. I am calling my Physician tomorrow after reading all of these comments and asking for a different BP drug. This one is awful.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced sinus congestion (not relieved by antihistamines like Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec) and not having a cold?

I've been slowing working my dose up on Wellbutrin from 75 mg. a day to 100 mg. to avoid side effects. However, I'm experiencing a sharp rise in migraine headaches and this weird nasal congestion. I can't find where anyone has noticed 'nasal congestion' as a side effect.

Dr. today suggested I stop the medication for 1 week and see if these two possible side effects disappear; which I plan to do. I am small and sensitive to all antidepressants and have to go low and slow. 16 years ago there was ONLY Brand name Wellbutrin which is what I took.....75 mg. twice daily and I didn't have any problems. Don't know if I'm reacting to the fillers, dyes and substances in these Generic Wellbutrin by Teva.

Anyone out there that has nasal congestion or Migraines from Wellbutrin??

Thanks. L.

My 12 year old son had a lactose intolerance and because he loved dairy - especially skim milk, mac and cheese, ice cream - we decided to help him with the intolerance side effects of diarrhea, cramps, gas - and try the store brand of lactaid. The ingredients were identical to the brand name. the pills & worked great for about 3 weeks. This past week, he had horrible stomach pains, diarrhea again and nausea, so bad he had to miss school. He had an appetite, no fever, but was assaulted with the side effects from taking the lactaid pills. I thought I was helping him, yet only the reverse! I am grateful to have come across this web site and shared blogs. Now I know how to solve my son's problems that caused so much suffering. In addition to the stomach pains, diarrhea & nausea, he also complained of bad headaches. As a mom, my instincts are correct and I attribute all of this to taking the lactaid pills. Thankfully, my son will not have to endure the horrible episodes anymore. Lactaid pills are banned from our home!

I took Topamax 50 mg for about 2 months and experienced a change in menstrual bleeding. I wonder if Topamax effects progesterone levels. I had light spotting 5 days before period due for both months. This medication also made me very depressed and angry. I quit taking it about 5 days ago and felt the depression lift on the 2nd day after stopping the medication. This was my 2nd round for Topamax. My first time taking it I worked up to 100mg and lost 15 lbs in just a few weeks. I had no appetite. I also go very sick with a respiratory infection and dry coughing. I had menstrual problems with the first round too but didn't figure out if may be the Topamax until my 2nd round. It did help my migraines significantly. But I'm uncertain how if potentially messes up menstrual cycle. The warnings for the medication says "menstrual problems" but doesn't go into detail. Anyone else have menstrual problems.

Very emotional ever since I started taking 2pills, just a thought and I would tear up. Like today this morning I was emotional and around 1o'clock I was Bitchy and irritable. I feel drudged honestly. I am 44 years old and have been taking singulair for about 4 years. 3 months ago I started experiencing crushing chest pain, tingling in my lower limbs, and felt very stressed out. I went to the ER last Thursday and was checked out for angina - the ER doctor told me I was suffering from chronic severe anxiety. I took Ativan for 4 days and felt better, but now the drigs are gone and I again having constant chest pain. In doing some research I found that anxiety can be caused by imbalance in adrenaline, and so started looking online to see if any of the allergy/asthma meds I am taking (adviar, singulair, allegra) can affect adrenaline. That';s when I found this website. Although i find the testimony compelling, I wish more folks would have poted about how their symptoms improved (or didn't) AFTER discontinuing singulair. Also I've noticed many of the stories are about children not adults; many people are taking more than one med for asthma, and most people's symptoms seem to come on right away whereas I have been taking sinulair for years and only recently have anxiety. I will stop singulair tonight and see what happens, but am wondering if anyone has come across further research that correlates singiulair with anxiety? My job life is really peaceful, I am otherwise happy, work can get hectic but that's true of any job, and I am out of ideas as to why suddenly at age 44, when I eat right and exercise - why get anxiety? Thanks for the posts, I'll try to remember to follow up after I am off Singulair for a few weeks.

I've been on Zoloft 11 years alternating between 50 - 75 mg. This SSRI positively changed my life. From being depressed/anxious/obsessive compulsive I've managed to lead a full happy and productive life.

HOWEVER, the last three nights I've experienced terrible anxiety producing nightmares. Waking up shaking and with my heart pounding, I'm wondering if changing from Zoloft (brand name) to a genertic would cause this problem.

I switched three months ago without any problems. Has anyone experienced the same symptoms, and if so, had you switched to a generic? It seems these nightmares would have occurred sooner if that was the problem.

I've been on Wellbutrin XL 300mg for quite some time now...coming up on 2 years, I think? I think I took the brand name drug at first, but for most of the time, I've taken the generic BUPROPRION--different generics from different companies, even. But this last refill, the pharmacy had switched to BUDEPRION for the generic. Bupropion and Budeprion are NOT the same!

Today is my second day on Budeprion and I feel like crap. Jittery, shaky, diarrhea, peeing constantly ("polyuria"), heart racing, nausea, nausea while hungry, hot-and-cold, and now worn out from a day of all that! My psychiatrist is on maternity leave but I've got a call in to her office to get it switched back to brand-name. Thankfully I'm in grad school, and under my student health insurance, the copay is the same for brand or generic.

Why Budeprion is considered a generic of Wellbutrin, I don't know. Wellbutrin is bupropion. This Budeprion stuff is a different chemical composition and is absorbed by/released into the body an entirely different way, from what I've been reading. When is the FDA going to get its act together???

My provider gave me a Rx (cozaar) to reduce and maintain my blood pressure. When the cost of the brand name cozaar became unmanageable, I was given an Rx for generic lisinopril, which I have been taking now for about 2 months. Within 2-3 weeks of taking the lisinopril, I developed a tickle in my throat, resulting in a minor, but consistent cough. I see, from the side effects posted on your website, that many others have found the cough resulting from taking lisinopril. I am immediately discontinuing my use of lisinopril. Thanks for the "heads up".

About 3 months ago, my provider gave me an Rx for generic lisinopril to save the significant cost of brand name cozaar. For the past 2 months, I have developed a tickle in my throat resulting in an almost constant cough. Until I read some of the side effects of lisinopril on your site, I never connected the cough with the lisinopril. Now that I see many taking lisinopril, with the cough side effect, I am ceasing to take lisinopril.

I was on ortho-tricyclene lo for years and had no problems. I had a baby a year ago and was on a progesterone only pill due to breast feeding. I recently weaned him, and wanted to go back to the ortho. My doctor prescribed me the Ortho, and when I picked it up at the pharmacy it was the tri-sprintec. I gained weight with in the first week of taking this medication. I weighed less when my breasts where engorged with BFing!! Now my breasts are not full and I eat less and work out more and still gained weight!!! This is really discouraging because I work really hard to stay in shape and I am a petite girl, so a few pounds goes a long way on my frame. Anyway, because this is the brand name and not the generic that I want, it is a pain to request the brand name now to get it covered by insurance. I am hoping to go back to the ortho and get rid of this excess weight!!!

Everyone should note which brand they are using: Wellbutrin brand name, Budeprion, or Bupropion. I recently started taking Budeprion and about 3 weeks into it, my hair started falling out; every morning after my shower, about 10 strands are in my hand. However, I have taken BUPROPION on 2 occasions over the past 10 years, and I NEVER had any side effects and definitely no hair loss. Walgreens decided to fill my Wellbutrin prescription with Budeprion because that's what they carry. I had to ask them to order BUPROPION from their warehouse (Same dosage, Same price). I am convinced that the hair loss I'm experiencing is from this other generic branch, Budeprion. So you all may want to try a different generic and see what happens. With Budeprion, I have also been having horrible headaches all day; which I don't remember experiencing with the BUPROPION. At any rate, this message board has been a relief and a big help on this issue (I bought some Biotin yesterday to try to regrow some of the hair I've lost over the past 2 weeks).

I am taking the generic Bupropion at 300mg per day. I went up in dosage to 300 last month, I'm about 1 week in to my 2nd refill on the 300mg. I am having TERRIBLE side affects right now. At this moment I'm at work trying to concentrate on even saying the right words on the phone - I have no sick time left so I can't go home - my hearing is jacked up. Things fade out and then come back so loud. I feel as if I'm drifting off to sleep and things get quiet and then WHAM someone will say something to me and it's so loud like someone woke me up from a nap. My vision is a little blurry, and I can't remember things. Fortunately I can get away with this for another day at my job, I started feeling like this yesterday, just today started thinking it was my med. I'm not on any other meds. I'm dizzy too. The worst part is I can't remember conversations. At the time of, I know what I'm saying though slower, but if I'm having a lengthy conversation I will probably forget what you said at the beginning. The confusion is what makes me the most upset. Things that I know, little things like someones phone extension, I can't remember and have to look up. The weird thing is all these symptoms come in waves. I'll have a moment of 'normalness' and then right back into the symptoms. I'm even having trouble typing right now. - I'm not hungry and after reading this site I now know why I'm itching all over.

I got on this website looking for a 'quick fix' like eating a big meal, but see I'm going to have to rough it out another day here in la la land. Wellbutrin was working for me in the beginning, 150 mg for 2 months, increased energy, good attitude etc, then wore off a little so we uped it to 300mg. I'm going to go dwn in dosage, try taking the 150mg tomorrow and see how I feel. I hope this wears off!! I am curious to know if you can cut the dosage of 300mg pill Buproprion to 150 by cutting it in half? I just got that refill so I was wondering. Today is going to be so rough! I went straight to bed yesterday after work and guess I will be doing the same tonight. Oh great, my coworker just asked if I was "ok" because I'm being so quiet. Yikes. I've read this email about 5 times to make sure I don't repeat myself since I can't remember!

*****For those of you posting in the future - and even those who have posted and are now reading this - could you please be specific on whether you are taking Wellbutrin or bupropion and what mg. Would be interesting to see if there's a noticeable pattern!*****

So glad I found this site. I too have had marked hair loss on this drug, with the exact symptoms most of you describe. I was on 300mg of Wellbutrin (the brand name) and had no problems. I switched to the generic (bupropion) and my hair starting thinning and falling out until you could easily see my scalp. For other reasons (I didn't put it together until recently), I went down to 150mg of the bupropion and my hair started growing back in. I went back up to 300mg and it fell out again - so I am now 100% convinced it is this drug. I too ruled out - with tests - all other causes: hormones, vitamin deficiencies, side effects of other meds, etc.

Here's my focus now: it seems to me, and many other people have noted this, that it is the generic (bupropion). When I was on the Wellbutrin, I had no hair loss. However, I noted several people said they had hair loss on "Wellbutrin" - so even though this wasn't the case in my experience, I'm so freaked out right now about the amount of hair loss that I decided to go off completely. A shame because I was doing really well.

I'm wondering ... when people are saying "Welbutrin" - is it really Wellbutrin? Most pharmacies will automatically switch it out. Maybe some of us think we are taking Wellbutrin, or are just calling it Wellbutrin, but really are taking bupropion. Generics and brand names differ in "ingredients." I noticed a definite difference in the "feel" of the Wellbutrin vs. bupropion - but it was a $50 vs $7 co-pay! It would be great to sort this out because those of us doing well on bupropion but have hair loss could switch to Wellbutrin - albeit a more expensive route.

Maybe its both? Either way I'd like to know. The doctors are no help. I love my doctor and brought this up to him several times. He did not think it was the meds. If he had simply gone on the Internet and typed in "Does Wellbutrin cause hair loss?" - like I did, it's impossible to totally dismiss it!

Thanks so much for sharing and letting me share. Oh - and please note, at least for me, even when I went down to the 150mg on the generic, my hair totally started growing back in. So, at least in my experience, hair regrowth starts immediately after reducing/eliminating the drug. And my hair loss was (and now is again) really bad.
