Oh wow ladies. Thank you all so much, really, for speaking out about this horrible birth control. Everyone but my husband thinks I'm crazy for associating the Mirena with all of these symptoms. I got mine in December '08 after having my daughter in October. Within a month I had lost my breast milk. I bled for about 3 months straight, plus severe cramping (I screamed that I wished I was in transitional labor again and I gave birth without drugs), and all the other things you ladies have said. I thought there was something horrible wrong with me. I can't have sex because it's too painful for me. My entire genital area has been irritated and swollen since I got the Mirena. Since I have sensitive skin, I just thought (at first) it was some sort of skin allergy to detergent or something. I've since switched everything: underwear, detergent, soap, toilet paper, etc. and it hasn't helped. Now I've finally started finding out about the negative side effects of the Mirena and I know it's causing all of these problems. My doctor and everyone else I've talked to about this has told me that there was no way that the Mirena could cause these problems, but I know my body better than them.
Thank you again, ladies.

I had Mirena put out at my six weeks check up after my second baby. I liked and have really enjoyed the fact that you do not have to visit the doctor every three months for a shot like was the case when I had depo.
I have been having a lot of issues which I am beginning to think are effect of having mirena. The main issue was my weight. I have put on over 40lbs and now weighing 213lbs as against 180lbs I weighed at pregnancy. I have been suffering dome depression bouts which I concluded was caused by the fact that I have been trying to get a job.
The most scaring thing now is that I have breast milk leaking out of my breasts that is over 9 months after I stopped breast feeding. I am scared, my doctor has scheduled some tests and I am having a mammogram later this month.
I am wondering if any body has had this issues of breast milk coming out of breast with no pregnancy. I have scheduled an appointment to remove the mirena. I am forgetful when it comes to medications hence I am scared the oills will not be good for me. I ma have to go back to the depo, i only gain a little weight with that.

My doctor prescribed Reglan to help increase my breast milk supply. After a few days I started getting a stiff jaw. After several hours it got so intense that I felt I needed to go to the doctors. I called my husband at work and asked if he could come home and take me to the doctors. He worked about 25 minutes away. By the time he got home I was screaming in pain - something I had never done in my life before. He took me straight to Urgent Care. I advised them that I thought I was having a reaction to the Reglan I had taken. By this time by jaw was spasming so bad that it felt like my jaw and teeth were going to shatter in my mouth. The doctor said Reglan would not do this and gave me a shot and said to go home and contact my Dentist. While I was waiting for the paperwork I started having problems breathing and swallowing. At this point Urgent Care discharged me and told me to go to ER. Once I was at ER and finally got seen I advised the doctor of my symptoms and that I thought it had to do with the Reglan. He actually listened to me and agreed that it was the Reglan and said he would administer a shot of Benadryl to counteract the effects of it. It took them over a hour from that point to get me the shot. It was the longest and most painful hour of my life. I was literally sat on a bed in a hallway at the ER screaming in pain. Within minutes of the Benadryl being administered I was feeling 100% better. I highly recommend seeking medical attention at the very first sign of any muscle spasms or involuntary movement while you are on this drug. Thank to you everyone else for sharing their experiences with us.

a few hours after i took levaquin, i went to BK and got a cheeseburger. i had just had a csection and was having a hard time recovering. i thought the pain i was having had something to do with the surgery but i started to realize it was the levaquin. it was like everything i tried to eat kind of got stuck going down. it hurt so badly i just stopped eating. i was so weak and my muscles were so weak. ias so weak that i had to concentrate really hard on my breathing. i didn't realize it was the levaquin until later that night. i started getting giant red spots on my arms and on my forehead. they were on fire and it was miserable... my husband had a bowl of ice cold water and ice packs and rags in the freezer. he was running around like a mad man trying to keep bringing me cold rags. every time he would put them on the red spots, the rags would be hot within seconds. my mom thought i should just jump into the cold shower but i had to explain to her that i was also freezing at the same time. finally my mom did some research and found out that this happens so the doctor said to take benadryl for a few days until the medicine wears off. i will never take that crap again... it was such a weird and terrible experience.

I was prescribed Reglan to increase my breast milk. I have no history of depression or anxiety. After a month or so having taken Reglan I got extreme anxiety and insomnia. I knew I was experiencing something that was NOT normal for me. It was a terrible experience. I had to move in with my mother so she could help me with my baby. I was diagnosed with post-pardum depression/ anxiety and put on antidepressants. Something I never would have believed would happened in my life. I am now weening myself off of them. Although my Ob/Gyn says that this experience was not due to the Reglan I was on. I am not convinced. I was taking it three times a day. I will never take Reglan again.

I am 34 years old. I am a pharmacy tech. I have asthma and allergies. I have taken singulair pretty much every day since it came out on the market. I've had asthma since i was about 10 years old. I took theophylline as a kid. Steriods on and off especially during times when my allergies are bad. I still use Advair during the fall and spring. Every drug has a side effect. However breathing is pretty good damn thing. Do I have days when I feel low? Yeah. Do I sometimes have nightmares? Yup. Are "natural" products the answer. Not always. The fish oil that some of the posters are touting can also cause GI problems. Some of the natural products contain herbs and other plant derivatives that can be harmful for a child that suffers from allergies. Not proactively treating asthma can be deadly. Some of the parents are suggesting steriods as the answer - those can cause weight gain, growth suppression and can lead to a worsening of asthma.
Singulair has never made me feel like I've wanted to kill myself. I was more depressed and angry as kid when my asthma did not allow me to partipate in normal childhood things. I was sad and hated life when I couldn't keep up with friends at recces because I was having trouble breathing. You have to outweigh the costs with the benefits. I am more irritable when I have asthma flareup then I am on a normal day. For me, I choose to breathe. And singulair has been helping me for almost a decade.
I'm not saying the medication isn't causing these symptoms but maybe there is an underlying cause to your child's depression.
Any drug has a side effect. But without medical research and the medications that come with them - people would still be dying of simple diseases and we wouldn't have vaccinations. As a society, as a whole, we are a culture that looks to someone else to fix things and then blames the people who try to fix it. We need to stop being the "hot McDonald's coffee'" society.

FINALLY I FEEL LIKE I AM NOT INSANE!!!!!!!!!
I am 27 years and had my Mirena inserted 2 months after my son was born. It has been over a year and I feel so crappy at times I don't know how i get through the day. I have been feeling apprehensive about removing it and thought maybe all of these symptoms have nothing to do with Mirena. I feel dizzy at times like I am drunk, mood swings, my hair is thinning out, i look like I am 9mon pregnant especially when i am PMSing, and have gained weight around the middle section, I don't feel attractive anymore, i don't feel good wearing clothes I once looked good in and always have to wear girdles which do not always work. I have always had acne but now it is ten times worst. I was a very sexual person but now it sucks. It hurts sometimes and I am very dry down there and that is not like me. I have leg cramps every now and then. I am gassy constantly and bloated, which I thought was because of my acid reflux (which existed before mirena). My breast hurt and gets swollen, sometimes one even looks bigger than the next. I just basically feel like I am having an out of body experience and not in a good way. My boyfriend has been nagging me to remove it if I feel so bad, but I am sacred that if I do and the symptoms still persist then what. I have spoken to my gyn so many times about this and he keeps insisting it is not the mirena. He has recently sent me for some lab work related to my breast pain and prescribed some medication to dry out my breast milk, but I have decided against it. Now after reading this site, I definitely am not going to waste money doing this, I am just going to be adamant about it and go get it removed. To think I am a nurse I should know better but I guess I am a woman first. I AM HAPPY I DO NOT FEEL ALONE ANYMORE. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE WHO HAS THIS REMOVED AFTER ALL THOSE SYMPTOMS TELL ME HOW THINGS HAS CHANGED FOR YOU. PLEASE SEND ME A PRIVATE MESSAGE.
SINCERELY,
WANNA GET RID OF MIRENA IN THE VI

Besides hair loss, vision problems, pain all the time, dry mouth, diarrhea, sleeplessness, pounding heart, I also had a problem with mucus filling my stomach and my food would get stuck. So I had to vomit to get the mucus up so I can continue eating. The first time I quite taking this poison pill, I got to feeling much better and my stomach got much better too. But never connected Lipitor with my problems. When I started taking this poison pill again, all my problems returned. But only worse, because I was in so much pain that it was hard for me to climb stairs and I had to hold on to everything just to go to the bathroom at night. Than I quit taking this poison pill again and haven't taken anymore since. All my problems disappeared again. I told my new doctor what this poison pill was doing and he told me to stop taking it, which I had already done.
So how many more people is this poison pill going to hurt and kill before Lipitor is taken off the market? I'm once again seeing Lipitor advertised on TV claiming this poison pill is FDA approved. Wasn't Baycol approved by the FDA as well and was taken off the market because it was too dangerous?Scary!

For all of the poor girls who are searching "mirena experiences" because you are looking for a sure thing contraceptive-
This site is only for people who have had BAD experiences. Read them all if you want, but take into consideration they are the 3%, or whatever number, that had problems. None of these women deserved it, asked for it, needed it, or wanted it, but unfortunately their bodies responded to it in such an ugly manor.
Here's my experience so far....Had it inserted 8/06/08. Insertion was fine. Felt that speculum more than I could feel the actual insertion of the mirena.
Slight cramping afterwards...not immediately-went home and for like 20 minutes had cramps lighter than my period cramps.
For the first week bled lightly, second week had an actual period, week three and week four just spotting. The doctor told me this can go on for up to six months...kinda worth it if you think about it.
No acne problems so far, my hair is fine (and trust me, if my hair was thinning, falling out, or anything like that I would take the mirena out!), muscles and joints feel like they did before pregnancy, still breastfeeding (I know that they say that the mirena will make you produce less breast milk-tell that to my breastfed 13 pound 24 inch long 2 month old. he would disagree)
My breasts are a little tender and at first I was slightly bloated (less than if I were on my period) but that has subsided. Abstained from sex for a month after insertion per my doctor's orders, so I will come back and post if there were any problems with that...NEXT WEEK! yay!
Know that I understand the side effects could show up later.
Now again, EVERYBODY will experience something different. We are interfering with nature. Birth control is one of the most unnatural things we could do to our body.
Again, since this site commonly comes up when searching the mirena, I want for women to know that it might work for them better than it did for others.

I haven't really had a bad experience with this pill! The only thing that is unusual is the fact that for the past month and a half my boobs have been leaking somewhat of a breast milk like substance. ♥ really gross♥ But I started my period today and the pills are not helping this month, I have never had a heavy period being on this pill until now and Ive been on it for 14 months.
Another downfall is that when I was on Ciproflaxen which i am still on for a UTI, I was extremely emotional and really freaked my boyfriend out for a week. I was soo out of it, and looked like i was on some kind of drugs. I would start crying for no reason and just lash out on him for something stupid! It made me a wreck!
I am thinking about switching to seasonale because after 14 mo. this pill is doing nothing for me!

After reading your stories, I am terrified that I even let my doctor talk me into getting this. I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old. My husband and I weren't sure if we wanted more kids so I asked my doctor what she recommended.
We decided on Mirena so I had it put in back in December. It is now Jan.19. On Wednesday I went for my 5 week checkup to make sure it was still where it was suppose to be. Well, they couldn't find it. This was in the morning...I needed to get an ultrasound. They still couldn't find it so they did an internal ultrasound...still nothing. So my doctor ordered an x-ray.
Mind you I had my kids with me because I thought it would be quick. So they were both hunger at this point. By this point it was almost dinner time.
They finally found it back on the right side of my abdomen. NOT IN MY UTERUS!! I couldn't believe it. I now need surgery to remove it.
They will be doing a laparoscopic surgery...my doctor has never done this before. Do I let her or do I get someone else to do it? She said she has never perforated anyone's uterus before and that she would not charge me for the surgery but I would need to pay for the hospital stay. Is this right?
I don't think I should be paying for any of this.
Besides the fact that I've also been experiencing lots of cramping and pain. I 've gained 6-7 lbs., have muscle aches, crabbiness, headaches, dizziness, bloated all the time, bad gas pains in my stomach,...tired.
Was it worth it...NO!!!
I can't wait to get it out. My husband and I will stick with condoms for now until we want a more permanent solution. My husband said he would get the vasectomy at that point. I've gone through enough.
I am sure this is not a good form of bc. I'm sorry women have had to go through the same experience but hopefully more women will realize how bad it is and not get one.

I had my MIRENA put in 2 months ago. Since then, even with the holidays, I have lost 11 lbs. (bringing me to 15lbs underwt.) I have had no appetite, acid reflux, extreme nausea, esophageal spasms, diarrhea, stomach cramps, headaches, and weakness. I am also still breastfeeding, so my once fatty milk now looks like water. My husband's starting thinking it was the MIRENA, because my body must think I'm pregnant again. I am going to the MD tomorrow to talk about have it taken out.

My OBGYN prescribed REGLAN to me to INCREASE PRODUCTION OF BREAST MILK when I was trying to nurse my baby. I was jittery the first day; very anxious the second. On the third day, I thought I was loosing my mind. I stopped taking the Rx, and by the end of the fourth day I felt normal. I was told that I was allergic to that family of drugs... but I would not advise anyone to take this drug unless they knew ALL of the adverse reactions. -Nicole, Alabama

When I was put on effexor I started feeling so much better. Then came the side effect. After taking for about a week I started lactating (producing breast milk). So far that is the only side effect that i have had . I will not stop taking this medication as long as it keeps me on track,I can deal with this one side effect.

highly increased sense of awareness and focus, thought is trained better to things that seem more constructive - making them more entertaining and meaningful. a sense of wanting to accomplish everything that you feel will benefit you, and wanting to take it beyond your own expectations, even if impossible. lack of appetite. when taken at later hours, irregular sleeping patterns (sleep only a few hours a night , and still able to carry through the day normally, and get to sleep at a normal time the next day...)
phsyical performance relating to 'skill' is decreased.
the feeling of wanting to help everyone.
these desires to accomplish things are good feelings, and even when you can't go the extra two thousand miles, self confidence is still at a higher level.
i heard while pregnant and nursing, adderall should not be taken. (some adderall shows up in the breast milk.)
not a good idea to give to children under 12.
no idea where the voices in peoples heads are comming from, perhaps a part of their personality is revealed that they experience on seperate occassions.
increased hearing.
change in sexual performance
fast heartbeat (2 - 3x normal beats per minute)
heightened blood pressure
it's great for academic performance.

I've had the mirena out now for close to 3 months. At first I was losing a lot of water weight - I had gained well over 20 pounds in 6 weeks after having it inserted. Unfortunately, I have plateaued in my weight loss, it's always easier to gain weight than to lose it, right? I still have numbness in my hands, to the point where I am quite clumsy, and I have spells of fatigue and dry-mouth. Before removal I had suffered from the anger and depression towards myself and others, and though it has improved significantly, I still have days where I feel like I could snap just because the 2 year is talking too much. I have found that a multivitamin in the morning gives me a little more boost through the day, and Motrin helps with some of the aches and pains. I'm not quite back to 100%, but I'm getting there. The hardest part for me to come to terms with is how poorly I've treated my boyfriend and our children because of the side effects. Even after 2 or 3 months without it I do suffer some of the side effects, but each day I can feel it starting to get better. I've even woken up a few mornings with feeling in my hands, instead of the tingling "sleep" sensation. All of this from 6 weeks of an IUD... Ugh.
All of the symptoms I suffered were made in previous posts including:
-- By becs84 | Reply | Private Message meNausea, severe cramping, severe mood swings, minor hair-loss, increased back pain - especially in lower and middle back, souring/reduction in breast milk, severe weight gain, fatigue, mental fog, vision changes, dry mouth, loss of libido, aggression towards others and myself, severe depression (thoughts of hurting myself), shortness of breath, hives and many more I'm probably not even aware of hahaha. Good luck ladies, this one is a doozy - and remember to report ALL symptoms related to Mirena to the FDA.
