I have great experience with this pill unlike others. Just like with any pill you can get melasma which is dark spots on your skin. I got few but from my previous pill witch was Yaz (it was terrible; daily headaches, no periods which is normal but kept buying pregnancy tests because of it, terrible breast soreness, vaginal dryness, zero sex drive). With this pill, at the beginning of taking this pill, first few days I felt little nauseous but nothing that bothered me. First month I had some breakthrough bleeding but that was gone after a month. No headaches, slight breast increase which I am not complaining about (it can happen in pills with higher estrogen). No breast soreness, no weight gain, no darkening of the skin so far, sex drive is normal. The only negative, this pill costs $75.

I have been on the NuvaRing for a year now and this was the first month I skipped by my own fault in forgetfulness. I went on the ring to regulate my hormones and thought it was useful to have a birth control method that overcame my pill-taking forgetfulness. It has worked really well not only in the hormonal department, but with period regulation and cramps. So many have had adverse reactions with their sex drive and emotions, but I was a lucky consumer. BUT THEN I forgot to insert the ring this past month; I was traveling and one day led to the next and you know how it goes. I brushed it off as a "medication free" month and proceeded with making my plans to move from the West Coast to the East Coast.
Last week was the week before my period and I began to experience HEAVY anxiety. Though I was happy and life was great (even with the large change in my life) my body was reacting in distress. At first I dismissed it as anxiety from moving, but then when I got my period it dawned on me. Usually I would experience heavy cramps before my period but the anxiety replaced it. I didn't even know my period was coming. My regular body clues were off base and this anxiety lead to a heavy chest feeling, short breaths, dizziness, headaches, breast soreness and general feelings of depression. As a woman I can be perfectly honest and say this is entirely hormonal because
Today I went online to research and was more than happy to see that I am not alone in the symptoms this birth control has caused me. Oh my goodness, I am almost excited to get back on it after my period to see if it dramatically changes on the flip side. I cannot continue feelings like this.

i have read a lot of these posts 7 its kinda freaked me out b/c im currently taking loestrin & i jus finished my 1st pack. i have light to heavy spotting everyday. i know most females wil began 2 spot 1st when they are taking a birth control that can decrease your period. i also feel moody & sort of depressed but i feel other things in my life are causing that. my cramps aren't as ad as when im not on bc. my breast are tender to but no acne, acne has never been a problem for me, thank god!lol. ut the only think that really bothers me is the constant spotting! i was on the shot, depo-provera for 2 yrs. straight. u get the shot once every 3 months. i spotted at first for like a month & then it began 2 decrease & my period stopped all together but still had increase breast size, extreme weight gain, cramps(not unbearable ones), & the worst migraines. these are jus typical side effects of birth control. i liked the depo shot cuz i didn't have a period or had 2 remember 2 take a pill everyday but the side effects are probably not worth that bargain. the any birth control especially the shot that stops your period & you take it for years straight can make you sterile i have a cousin who had a few miscarriages b/c of it b/c the shot might not ware of from a month to a year causing sterility. the shot also can cause bone density. im just so fed up w/ irth control b/c they all have a bad side effect. i hope they can invent something w/ way less side effects because the negative out ways the positives with most if not all birth controls but i guess im gonna try loestrin for a while before i give up on it.

...I am not taking any birth control, BUT i discovered this website on behalf of my best friend who's had Mirena for a little over 6, maybe 7 months now...Personally i Dont' trust any birth controls - other than condoms :-) why ? Guess i Just don't trust the Industry...it appears to me, that the only extensive Tests done on birth control are the ones done to make sure Ladies don't conceive...AnyWay, my BF's side effects include UTI's, stomach aches & cramps, yeast infections; I'd even say her mood has been effected by Mirena....she tells me & may i add we hide nothing from each other; she's had no issues w/UTI's or yeast infections before the insertion of Mirena...I worry about her. She wants to have another kid & i don't want this birth control messing up her body...just Last Week she told me: Out of noWhere - began to bleed heavily w/no pain w/heavy clotting....I keep telling her its the BC, but in her words, "it's just so convenient." did i spell that right ?....i know this BC is easy and effective & now i see all these harsh side effects it brings...A friend of my sister's complained of an Odor down there....I'll be telling my BF about all of u Ladies experiences w/Mirena...I know the reason why she & other women would get Mirena, but i don't want her or any other woman 2 suffer, or loss hair, or gain weight, or acquire cyts OR any of those things when it can be avoided....and of course your doctor will Tell u how great & safe it is....that's their job, its just unfortunate that their job isn't 2 tell us the truth !

Hello, I had mirena inserted after the birth of my son four years ago. Ever since then i have been very unhappy with my choice. I have more down days than up days, i cry a lot, VERY! moody. My poor husband. He has suffered through this. I feel so bad. After reading all the comments, i feel that the doctors are liars. I bed for three months after insertion. I called the doctor, oh, your body is adjusting. This is normal. I have recently moved to another state and my new doctor seriously believe that the mirena is taking a toll on me. back pain, bleeding for weeks when my periods lasting three days before, breast soreness, headaches, weight gain despite vigourous exercise, depression, lack of interest in sex. (i'm 37). That's enough for me. I am considering having it removed as soon as possible.

Hello All,
I am a 40 year old woman and I have had the mirena iud insert for at least 5 years. My doctor asked if I would like to try this iud because of the heavy bleeding. So..of course I told him yes I would like to try it(especially when I knew that I would not have to worry about taking the pill everyday). I asked the doctor right before he inserted this device if it would hurt. He said no, it would take less than 5 minutes to put it in. I heard a snap, and then the pain in my abdomen was so great, I thought I would fall against the wall on my way out. I almost pulled over on the highway on my way back home because the pain was so great. It felt like labor pains. I decided that my body just needed to adjust. I have experienced depression, the worst anxiety, severe cramps, some hair loss right above my forehead, crazy moodiness, weight gain constipation(I sit on the toilet for at least an hour.)headaches, unreasonable crying at least once a month, fogginess, gas, pain traveling from both sides of my uterus and around to both sides of my lower back. Some days I wanted to just die. I was so afraid to go to the doctor to remove it because of the experience getting it put in. Having intercourse was another issue. When I felt myself even getting in the mood, I would start cramping. I would ignore it because I didn't want to disappoint my mate. He would hit the threads of the iuc sometimes and he said it would hurt him. He somehow learned to maneuver some type of way to keep from sticking himself and after intercourse I would get the worst cramps. At times the pain was so severe, I would call off from work and sometimes had to leave work. My skin on my face looks terrible. I have always been complimented for my skin but now it looks a sight to me. I do get acne on my back from time to time and I experience breast soreness. One night this week, my cramps were so severe I didn't know how much more I could take. When I went to the bathroom to check it out, the blood was bright red and not like a period. More like something was torn. For the last couple of days the blood looks like a rusty brown color and it smells like metal. I am so afraid to have sex and I am still getting cramps. All I find myself doing is lying down because I am always tired. I am very afraid of this whole thing. It has been a total nightmare. I am glad I came across this website. I did not realize so many women are having some of the same problems that I am having with this device. I don't even want to be alone when they take it out. My mate says that he would be there with me if I want to get it removed but my anxiety is so great. I am terrified!! I can't believe I let all of this time go by thinking that my body would adjust to it. Thank you all for sharing your information. I am about to embark on the journey to have it removed. Wish me luck and I pray for all of you who have felt my pain. I would not recommend this device to anyone. I am glad that I have 3 daughters already so I don't have the worry about not being able to have children. Thank you all for your responses, it has given me(finally)the motivation(which I have not had)to get rid of this iuc.

ENLARGED BREASTS: Yasmin turned me off to the birth control pill as it was the first one I tried. Within a week my breasts had gone from size C to D and were incredibly sore. I had trouble sleeping comfortably and doing sports. I experienced slight weight gain, but the breast soreness was the most unbearable. I also remember waking up in the middle of the night during the first week and thinking that they were still getting larger! In any case, I only used Yasmin for 3 months and switched to something lower. I have been off the pill completely for over a year and I am looking for suggestions for lower dose birth control. I welcome any helpful advice.

Since being on Lexapro, I have no feelings of anxiety. In fact, I have no feelings at all. I am numb to everything it seems and I have little to no emotion - ever. In addition to being a zombie, I am hungry all of the time and I have no energy to do anything, but rest on the couch. I have been taking Lexapro for about 3-4 years and have gained about 30 pounds. Now that is depressing. I am slowly weaning myself off the drug now. I took 1 pill every other day for a month and now I am taking 1/2 every other day until my prescription is gone. I'm experiencing some additional side effects now. I am having mini panic attacks where my heart will race for about 5-10 minutes, restless legs where I need to keep moving them when I am trying to rest, hot flashes where I will sweat profusely, I'm very irritated at the smallest of occurrences and the most strange side effect that I have not heard of previously is breast soreness - very painful. If anyone else is experiencing the same, please write about it, I would really like to know if this is common, how long it will last and if there is something else (natural) that I can take to help with weaning off Lexapro. Please help!!

I have been on the ring for 2 months because I never could get adjusted to the pill's side effects even though they are supposed to disappear. I am sensitive to hormones and be nauseated even 6 months of taking the pill consistently even low dose. The NuvaRing made me nauseous only the first month and it is more convenient in the sense you do not have to remember every day to do something. One thing that has not disappeared yet and I am going on my third month: EXTREME BREAST SORENESS. I wake up every morning like what the hell?? They are so swollen. They look nice and full but I don't want anybody touching them. Overall, I am a very sexual person but this ring makes me have less desire. Then, sometimes all of a sudden out of nowhere I feel very nervous for up to 30 minutes (never had this before). My chest will tighten and I will sometimes be angry. This happens maybe every other or every few days...

DO NOT take antibiotics unless it is a Life or Death situation!
I have been diagnosed with CYSTITIS, based in my breasts & bladder, and now I'm scheduled to go in for other tests because I have had excessive bloating, IBS & pain in my gut.
I thought the Nuva Ring was causing my extreme random cramps, my breast soreness (Extremely Painful, making me want to inject them with novacaine, if it were a good idea...), my Pain During Sex (esp. since I have a lovely sex drive) and most recently, the constant urge to pee when I didn't, but it was NOT the birth control.
ANTIBIOTICS CAUSED THIS!
In the last month I have met 3 more women (& 1 man) with the same/similar problems and diagnosis, All on heavy antibiotics in the last year.
The good news is that it is Not cancerous to my knowledge, there are foods you can eat, like those that are good for reducing swelling, and it's a good idea to Avoid certain foods such as soy, anything too acidic like tomatoes, cranberries or citrus fruits & juices, preservatives, additives, really spicy foods, etc. **It is Very Important to take a Pro-Biotic capsule with At Least 4 different types such as Acidophilus, Bifidum, and others, depending on your symptoms & areas of concern (look up what bacteria does what). Taking these only during antibiotic usage Is NOT Enough!
The bad news? If a few months to a year of partial/full diet change does not help, it is considered either too late to help (get used to the pain, it's not going anywhere) or it may be an auto-immune disease, though this is quite rare.
PLEASE, LADIES -- Take Care when dealing with antibiotics, they are much more dangerous than many people/doctors know/are lead to believe. (And as for the yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis? Take 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide, 3 parts water, douche (rinse, do not let it set for more than 10 sec's) once a day before bed/naptime for a few days, splash Outside Only with cool water if needed, but Not inside. Burn/irritation for about 1 min. but Absolutely worth not waiting for a doc's prescript. or spending endless $ on crappy worthless ointments/creams. Totally safe when Diluted -- Hydrogen peroxide is made naturally on its own in All Vaginas, this just helps to kill yeasts and bad bacteria which are Anaerobic (do not like oxygen).)

Hi there,
I had the Mirena IUD inserted on my 32nd birthday, 4 months after my son was born. The cramping was reminiscent of having my period but I felt better the next day.
I have been happy with the fact that I have had absolutely no trace of a period and maybe just a smidge of spotting here and there, until last week when I actually had to use pads for a week and then had old blood showing days later.
So far this is the first day that I haven't had to use a pad and I've noticed that I'd had migraines for the first time, I am exhausted but then I have a 9 month old who often gets up to feed during the night. I can't comment on my breast because I am breast feeding right now too.
I am extremely hot all the time. Just feel like there is an internal heater or as if I were pregnant again, I have noticed pimples around my face that I never used to have. They are big and painful. I am now cramping off and on and it can sometimes be quite painful.
My eyes are extremely dry and I often have to try to make myself cry to get tears to moisturize them while I am driving, My body does feel itchy often - until reading this site I often put it down to the fact that it was during winter and my skin just dried out.
My biggest concern is that my knees are extremely painful, and my lower thighs above the knee are often sore as though I have been lifting weights. I am out of breath when walking up our stairs and yet I have managed to lose 20 pounds of weight since having my baby, so the sensitivity and pain in my knee just does not make sense.
I've also experience light headedness and every once in a while out of the blue I'll get some tingling in my left hand. Weird.
I think I will print this out and show it to my OBGYN because he is very dot the i cross the t type.
Wow, thank you everyone for sharing your info, maybe all my symptoms are that from Mirena too. I certainly didn't have them prior to MIrena insertion.
Take care

Hi all.
I just found this site and all of your posts. I *never* connected my Mirena with all the health issues I've been having. I've had the Mirena in since about August/September 2006. Within 6 months I started having side effects. Due to other things going on in my life I thought my problems were related.
Now I am seriously thinking it's all related to the IUD. I've had chronic fatigue, increased hair falling out, acne that won't go away, uterine cramping, pelvic sensitivity, mood swings, ridiculous irritability, decreased focus and concentration, increase in my depression, weight gain of about 50 pounds within 1 year, decreased libido down to next to nothing, increase in pain and length and frequency of migraines, and that annoying string. I seriously never related all these things to the Mirena. In fact, if you had asked me a week ago, I would have raved about it and sung it's praises. I do love that I don't have to worry about pregnancy and not having to think about the birth control every day and so on. I also love, love, love that I don't have a period at all but for maybe 2 times a year.
I have sought the help of a Doctor in trying to figure out what all these symptoms might mean. This is not the same doc who inserted the IUD, she quit the practice. My new doctor at first thought my thyroid must be messed up so we had it tested. Ummmm, nope. Then she did some more thinking about it and had me tested for diabetes. Nope again!
I'm sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and I think I want this fool thing taken out. I'd rather have periods again than have all these other things wrong with me. I'm normally very energetic almost to the point of being hyper and I now sleep about 16 hours a day. I'm not being a good parent to my daughters, and I'm trying to go to Nursing school and it's wrecking my ability to make it to class and get homework done. At this point I think the worse thing that can happen is I have it removed and nothing changes and I'm really sick with something we haven't identified. Best case scenario, it fixes the majority of these problems. I don't expect some things to go away. I've always had migraines, but maybe they will be less severe. I've had depression for as long as I can remember but maybe now it will go back to being controlled as it was before. I hope to have my energy increase again and to gain my focus and concentration.
I can't tell you just how incredibly thrilled I am for having stumbled onto this website and to be able to read all your comments and thoughts. Even though we don't know each other and we're likely spread all over the United States, and perhaps other countries, we've managed to come together and share. Thank you all.

I stopped taking this pill a couple of weeks ago because of nausea and breast soreness. The side effects started right away but since the pamphlet said they should subside within three months I tried to stick with it. The nausea wouldn't be so bad if I took the pill in the early evening but it was still bad. I lost my appetite and subsequently lost some weight ( I know - why complain about that). The breast tenderness got to the point where I was actually scared I was pregnant, that's how sore they were. Once I stopped the pill the side effects were gone within a week. Never again with Femcon.

Almost finished with my second pack and I have not experienced ANY of the side effects mentioned here. Only minimal breast soreness and irritability, but it's very mild. Sex drive comes and goes, but it's nothing major. Painful cramps with my last period, but no breakthrough bleeding. This is the second BC I've tried. Last year I was on Loestrin 24 Fe and it made me depressed, angry, miserable, and I had extremely horrible periods. Yasmin is working fine for me! I guess you have to find the BC that is right for YOU.

I have been on NuvaRing for 4 months. I was previously on DepoProvera for 10 years, but due to bone loss, osteopenia, had to get off it. I had no side effects with Depo, no periods, no PMS, no problems.
I gained 12 pounds the first 2 months on NR. My weight continues to climb, even though I exercise and eat well. My breasts are swollen and sore constantly. I have excessive discharge, itchiness, and burning. I have also noticed I have gas more often.
I do not take the ring out for a week for a period, I just insert a new ring after 3 weeks and have experienced no bleeding. I have NOT experienced any of the other symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, mood swings, headaches, which is surprising since I have been estrogen-deficient for 10years and am suddenly on it.
Overall, my symptoms seem minimal compared to others' experiences, so maybe everyone is different. But it does scare me that these symptoms are possible in the future.
PROS:
easy to use, convenient
only have to take it once/3 weeks
big boobs!
no period
CONS:
weight gain
breast soreness
yeast infections, itchiness
excessive discharge
gas
cost $35 every 3 weeks (my Depo was free)

I was on this for a year and then the price went up since my insurance stopped covering it. So I switched to generic (Microgestin Fe 1/20) which has 7 brown pills. And I get cramps again with my period which I haven't gotten in a year, so I'm thinking paying the extra $ for Loestrin 24 Fe is worth it and I might switch back. I also expect my period is going to go back to being heavier and longer, but I have yet to see, it's just day 1 now. The side effects I did experience were lower sex drive and less vaginal lubrication. I also experienced constant breast soreness, and weight gain, but I didn't associate them with the pill until now from reading these comments.

Well I finished my first month of Yasmin and things are starting to improve. I almost quit it half way through.
I did experience break through bleeding, bloating in the beginning, cramps, backaches, increase in appetite and extreme breast soreness and an increase in breast size. My first period was very light (3 days) with minimal cramps. The bloating went away, along with the backaches. My breasts are still sore and enlarged and I am hoping and praying that they go back to normal after the three months. I have to admit that my skin is much clearer, I am 31 and have suffered from mild adult onset acne for about 6 years. I have gained a few pounds but I believe that this is my body adjusting to the hormones and I will lose it soon. My appetite has increased but I make sure that I eat very small meals more frequently and I drink a lot of water.
Remember, hormones mimic pregnancy, so weight gain and breast soreness isn't unusual.
My advice is to give Yasmin at least 3 months for your body to adjust. All BC's have side effects. Yasmin is promising and the fact that it helps with clear skin is a bonus. Just hang in there!

I took yasmine for years with no side effects. However, after taking Yaz for only 2 months, I have experienced a LOAD of side effects: irregular heartbeat, chest pain, lightheadedness, anxiety, depression, and sore breasts. Has anyone else experienced breast soreness and lumpiness since taking this pill? I have never experienced cysts in my breasts before starting Yaz.

Hey guys. I can't seem to figure out what's going on here. I've always had anxiety but I've been able to control it. About 3 years ago, I started Yasmin & the anxiety raged out of control. I get very severe dizziness/vertigo. Stomach problems, backaches, severe breast soreness. I didn't even start to make the connection until recently to Yasmin. I don't take any other medications (I'm mostly a naturopath) so this is the only chemical I'm putting in my body. I think I need to get off this medication. Thoughts?

I love the RING. I was on the pill FOREVER then I changed to Seasonal. I hated that because i ALWAYS had my period. Then I switched to the patch. I loved that but hated the tan lines (i know.... very vain). Also, the risks seemed MUCH higher than any other bc (health wise). So, I got on the ring. I love it love it love it! I don't have any breast tenderness before my period. I used to ALWAYS have breast soreness for about a week before my period.
The one drawback i have with the RING is the DISCHARGE!!!! It's pretty gross. I pretty much hate the constant discharge. But.... i fee like it's worth it.... not having to remember to take a pill, no breast tenderness, no severe moodswings.... I think it effects everyone differently. I think if you lead a fairly healthy life style, the side effects will be few to none. but i'm not a doctor. try it yourself to see....

Hi Guest 22426...I didn't think you sounded angry in your post at all, just aggravated maybe, as well you should be. I am ticked off as well that I was not informed as I should have been. I am hoping that the breast soreness will not spread, and that it will leave soon. (crossing my fingers). BUT, from what I have read on other Levaquin websites, it may be here to stay for a while. :o(
At least the rash seems to be clearing up some.
Are you still having pain, or has it stopped?

I am also really glad I have found this website. I had my mirena placed in March 2006. I loved it, told all my friends thought it was a miracle. I have completely changed my mind. I have dizziness, headaches, joint pain and my PCP put on Lexapro for anxiety and mild depression in September 09.
-- By hannibul1 | Reply | (1) replies | Private Message meI have a 3 and 4 year old, but am so fatigued at times I don't want to do anything but sit around. I can not lose any weight. I tried nutrisystem and
that didn't help. I am also having having a symptom that hasn't been mentioned on the site. I have done some research and noticed that the mirena can also cause blood vessels to constrict. In December 08 after having some (quite a few) drinks and smoking cigaretts at my husbands
Christmas Party the next morning my forearms and hands were a dusty blue color. I have had this happen one time since. A couple of times the bottoms of my feet were a purple/ bluish color looked as if they were badly bruised. After researching the cause of this, the only thing I can find is that the mirena can also cause constriction of the blood vessels. Has anyone else had this happen???? I had and echocardiogram done, that was fine all my blood work has come back normal. Am seeing a neurologist, he has me scheduled for a nerve condition test, but he thinks
I may need to see a vascular doctor.
