I have been taking Levothyroxin (Synthroid generic) for about 5 months. I started on a low dosage and have been taking 75 mcg (which turned out to be the right dosage. I turned 59 years old in July and I had been gaining weight.Nothing startling--a few pounds a years that added up to about 50 pounds over time..I am losing weight now. The side effect I am most concerned about is a an inarticulateness I seem to have developed since I started taking the medication.I can't sepak civilly to my son who also turned 20 in July. I just want to scream at him all the time.
Is this a side effect of Synthroid? I don't think I have been losing my hair, fortunately, but it is dry and brittle...

I am so happy to have found this website. I started taking Yasmin 2 months ago and was only on it for 1 month. I began a round of Prednisone at the same time due to hurting my back. Well, while tapering off of the pred (going into my 3rd week of Yasmin) I had one night of NO SLEEP. In the morning my muscles were so tight and painful I could barely walk. My heart was racing, I was so dehydrated I could barely speak, my vision was blurry, I couldn't form sentences clearly my head was in such a fog and I had lost 5lbs literally overnight ( I am already extremely thin naturally, so this is not a good thing for me) I was skin and bones. My normally thick, shiny hair became dry, thin and brittle and my skin broke out horribly and I had painful diarrhea. This is just the physical symptoms. The mental symptoms were out of control. I was crying all the time, yelling at everyone and just being completely irrational. I truly thought I was dying. My doctor thought maybe I was having withdrawal from the pred. This continued for a week until I started researching about Yasmin. I immediately stopped taking it after reading the side effects people were having as they were the same as mine. Strangely, they were also the same as prednisone withdrawal, the only problem was that I was off the pred and still having symptoms. Over the following 2 weeks, they slowly got better. Then, it all started again for my next cycle just to a much lesser degree since I was off the BCP. This makes me certain that my symptoms were absolutely from the BCP and not the Pred. I am reaching the end of my period today and my weight has gone back up and I am again starting to feel better. I just hope next month will be normal again. The thing that makes me the most angry is that my doctor refuses to believe that any of it had to due with the BCP. I have been on plenty of BCP's and NEVER experienced anything like this. This stuff needs to be pulled from the shelves or doctors need to be more aware of it's potential side effects and quit discounting our intelligence. Thank you everyone for your posts.

Severe hair loss/thinning. I've been on a low dose of prednisone for 11 years. My dose varies from 5/10 depending on the flare up. Before prednisoe, I had A LOT hair on my head.... thick, curly, healthy, shiny hair. I have about half the hair left on my head that I had before. It's now dry, brittle, lifeless, and damages very easy. It's hard to get any length on hair, because as it grows, it's breaks off...it's quite thin and has been ruined by prednisone.

I've had symptoms for about two months now without knowing they were coming from taking doxy. First, I couldn't sleep at night b/c my feet felt like they were on fire! and my hands had the same tingly feeling esp. after a change in temperature. Then my toes became red and swolen around the nail. After about a month, the feelings never really went away but always got worse when I was in the sun. A rash began to develop on the tops of my toes. Each bump looked like a tiny water blister. After more sunlight, the rash spread to my hands and arms. More fire. I also got the terrible feeling in my thumbs and index fingers that felt like I banged them with a hammer. Now that the rash is going away (still bad on my toes), my fingernails are terribly brittle, discolored, and are coming off the nail bed on a few fingers. I've also gotten a fever blister and terrible sunburn on my nose, ugh. I was presecribed this medicine for acne, but that seems as though it hasn't even been treated. I've also noticed blurred vision and back pain, but I think that is just b/c I hate my job. LOL.

Had total thyroidectomy 9 months ago and started taking Synthroid immediately thereafter. For the last 4 months I have noticed significant hair thinning. I have always had very thick, healthly looking hair but now it's just dry and brittle all of the time. I always feel tired and bloated around my stomach area in particular. I have always been a size 4-6 but have inexplicably gained 6 pounds in the last month. Is there an alternative to snythroid without these side effects?

I have been on Warfarin since December 2003 for peripheral vascular disease. I was on the same dosage, 7.5 mg, up until I started seeing a different DR. last year and he upped me to 9.5 mg a day. I noticed I started losing a tremendous amount of hair. Dr put me on prenatal vitamins with no improvement. Hair is very dry and brittle. Have had alot of lightheadedness to the point where I feel I want to pass out but don't, now it affects my driving and work. My head feels like it wants to explode sometimes and have lots of migraines. Anyone else????

Topamax is TERRIBLE... works great for migranes, but losing SOO much hair. I have been off of it for 4 1/2 months ... hair loss is slowing, but still going. My gorgeous hair turned to brittle straw... Also T affected my liver and nervouse system. It is AWFUL... not worth it.

I'm so sorry you are so sad! I too am 32 and had to stop taking Yasmin b/c of possible clot. I was taken off mid-pack June 7th. I know everyone is different, but my skin/hair have gone from borderline dry to more the greasy side, and I actually even had face breakouts. I tease I'm a teenager again! I'm adjusting my skin/hair care products, but have had many women reassure me that skin more on the greasy side will stave of wrinkles as I age. :-) I wouldn't say I noticed my hair thinning on Yasmin but it definitely was more brittle and broke more. I was very emotional at first after Yasmin and still have my days, but after 2 months I feel like I'm starting to stabilize. And thanks for the eye twitch notice, yet another effect I didn't even know was likely a Yasmin thing. I bet you will notice as you feel better all the 'stuff' you didn't realize were due at least in part to Yasmin, too. Please hang in there, I am very hopeful as the days and weeks go by your WILL feel better!

To those of you asking about tingling/ burning in your face pre and post yasmin. I experienced this both during and after yasmin. I was on it 3 months. It managed to dehydrate me especially in my face. I have very oily skin and hair. The yasmin took away the oils in my face and hair, even the pores on my nose closed up. My skin felt swollen and sensitive like a light sunburn at times (tingly) shooting pains in my cheeks, jaw aching (Im a clencher i dont know if this was stress related.) Also my hair texture changed less oily, thin dry and brittle also my scalp was real sensitive i couldnt even wear my hair in a clip or ponytail without severe scalp pain. Needless to say it was falling out all over the place but it has let up now. (I took prenatal vitamins while this was happening to keep it growing fast.) I had lots of other symptoms too, been off the evil little pill 3 months now. Slowly getting better. I am an RN and I think this pill is bad news. I took ortho novum 777 for years with no problems, no side effects. I thought they were all the same. I cannot believe the LIFE CHANGING effects this pill has caused me and so many other people.

Unfortunately the rudeness from the responses are probably another side effect from the prednisone. I have been on for 3 months now, up to 40 mg a day and I have body aches, feels like my bones are brittle and will break if I stand up. I have blurred vision and fevers the whole nine yards. My doctor is so hard to get in to see and when I tell the nurse she says" oh thats not due to the prednisone". Yeah right. It is a bad drug. I have Chrones and have requested Remicade , which is an alternative drug which I know people that are on it and have done very well. But to my first point there are alot of side effects due to drug and the moodiness is very apparent here. If you want to vent go elsewhere .

as i am reading everyone having pain in you hips and legs. about a year ago i was having pain in my hips and going down like the siatic nerve. the pain was so bad i had to set on a heating pad. it hurt so bad sometimes i would actually cry. at that time i really did not attribute it to fosamax. but i quit taking it about 6 to 7 months ago simple because i could not remember to take it. i thought it was the lipotor that i had recently started to take. maybe they have some of the same ingredients. but recently i went to get two teeth extracted and the dentist refused, because i have taken fosamas. it seems there is a side effect if you have teethe extracted you do not heal good. leaving the jaw bone exposed and eventual the bone dies out. requiring lots of money to rebuild the jow bone. has anyone had problems with there teeth getting brittle and breaking off?

I am 21 and was on Yasmin for over a year, and have been off of it for about a month. I noticed that I couldn't lose weight as I was eating healthy and going to the gym, I was constantly getting migraines and leg cramps, and my biggest problem, my hair is THINNING. This is making me crazy, I had beautiful thick hair, and now it is dry, brittle and very very thin. I am sure it had to be b/c of this horrible pill! Any suggestions on how I can get my life back on track and also my hair???

In 1986 I was in premature labor with my son for 2 1/2 months I was in and out of the hospital on Yutopar either intraveneously or orally. My doctors kept increasing the dosage until I was taking 7 times the recommended dosage, 7 40 mg tablets every two hours. When I was taken off the drugs they discovered even though I had been in premature labor, my cervix would not dilate. They did a C section. When the cord was cut, my son's heart stopped beating, he was revived, he had severe hypoglycemia. He had no sugar in his system. My pediatrician told me it was the most traumatic birth he'd ever seen. Apparently the drug matured my placenta and it had died causing my son to loose weight. He went from an estimated 10 pounds while I was carrying him to a 6 lb birth weight.
In 1994 I had to have a hysterectomy. The doctors found out that one of my ovaries had been surgically removed and the tissue and uterus was necrotic. Since then my teeth had to be extracted because they became so brittle they started to break off. No decay, just kind of disintegrated.
My son has a high IQ, is very intelligent but does not apply himself, suffers from ADHD, hypoglycemia and some social skills.

I'm 62. I started using Lipitor April 2004.
About a month ago ... it felt like I was losing my ability to walk and climb stairs. Left leg was worse than right. Muscle and joint pain in lower back, arms and legs. Even my toes and fingers ached! Sounds strange, but the skin on my thighs became loose and flabby. My fingernails became very dry and brittle. It even was uncomfortable for me to sit for any length of time unless my feet were up.
I saw a Lipitor ad on TV last week that warned of unusual weakness. I searched the internet for more info, found the NIH site, and I stopped the Lipitor on Dec. 20. I started doing some leg exercises and feel improvement.
I'll notify my doctor of my decision to stop at my next checkup in early January.

I was on 1 mcg generic levy thyroxine - manufacturer - Mylon.
My doctor switched me to Levoxyl 1.12 mcg - manufacturer - Monarch-james.
My TSH was 4.28 and the doctor said that he would like to see it in 3 range and bumped my dosage.
Since this change, I have started to loose hair and feeling aches in hip and my bones are brittle. My fingers in both hand and leg hurt too. I am feeling bloated, started having diareah for last two days.
I feel more energetic though but am not getting sleep quick.
Is the change in manufacturer is a mistake my doctor made. or Levoxyl it self has lots of issues. I understand that they are both levythyroxine.
Can some body expain what I need to do. I have been having panic attacks and severe anxiety too.

i am a 33 year old male and i have been taking warfarin for the past nine years. i have had most of the side effects that i have read about here. before i began taking the drug i asked my doctor about side effects and i was told that there were only two; bleeding and bruising.
i have since learned that the research had not been done. that is why they don't know about the side effects.
here are just some of the effects that i have had in my nine years on this drug. memory loss, hair loss, itchy feet, blurred vision, headache, brittle/crumbling teeth, stomach pain, non healing wounds.
i have began to do more research on my own lately, since it has been almost 10 years since i first began taking warfarin. the only new side effect that i have learned about is calcification of cartilage. i have been lucky not to have had this problem yet.
i have had no trouble yet with bleeding, although i do get some pretty bad bruises. i usually have three or four bad ones on my legs or arms at all times.
i am sure i will develop more side effects as the years go by. i am 33 years old now and will be taking warfarin for the rest of my life.
p.s. i have a titanium st.jude mitral valve
