Major hair loss (even my eyelashes have thinned out. Talk about upsetting), nausea, seriously bloated stomach, gassy, bacterial vaginosis (the second in my entire life), 2 week periods, breasts grew a half size so far, foggy headed, vision seems off when I drive (focusing it harder).
I posted some of my side effects last week. Today I got Mirena removed! I was sweating it b/c it hurt bad during the insertion 2 months ago, but it wasn't that bad. Hurt a little but it was quick and easy. They used long tongs to pull it out. I'm bleeding now a little bit but I've been bleeding for 10 days already from being on my 'extended' Mirena period, so I don't care. I'm just glad it's over with. My doctor said I didn't have to explain why I wanted it out. It was my choice. I mentioned again to her anyway the hair loss (probably a third of my hair in just 2 months), and the bloating (I look at least 3 month pregnant and I haven't really gained but like 2 lbs. I think it's from progesterone. Progesterone has to be causing this gas too b/c I had that side effect years ago when I was on progesterone). She said it's all possible side effects and that everyone is different. Some women do well on it and some don't. I'm just bummed b/c I could never have sex anyway b/c of the long periods and the case of BV in between those. These past 2 months have been a big waste of time and energy/worry. I can tell my husband is glad this saga is over with. With 2 young children I need to focus my energy on them and be clear headed. Good luck! I won't recommend this to my friends.

I started on the NuvaRing in April of this year, so this is my 4th month on it. The first month was great! I loved that I didn't have to think about it daily and my libido was through the roof! The only side effects: I noticed immediately that it increased my discharge, which was a little uncomfortable on a day-to-day basis but was very nice for making love. The discharge was also a whitish color, which threw me off because I'm used to it being clear but my doctor assured me that all was normal. Also, it would occasionally fall out during more passionate sex, which wasn't a big deal. I just washed it off with cold water and reinserted it. The second month, things seemed great until the last half of the month. I noticed that there wasn't as much discharge and I would get a slight burning sensation after sex. About a week later, I came down with a full blown yeast infection. I hadn't had a yeast infection in 10 years! I treated it with an OTC 3 day suppository, which seemed to help it a little. I removed the NuvaRing like normal and a few days later I started my period. Things seemed to go back to normal and a week went by without much problem. The middle of the 3rd month I was slammed full force with yet another (or the same) yeast infection, plus bacterial vaginosis as well. I asked the doctor about the NuvaRing and it possibly causing/aiding yeast infections. She assured me that it wasn't possible for the ring to cause infection. She gave me instructions on how to properly rinse it off in case it ever fell out again. She prescribed me 2 doses of Diflucan for the yeast and an antibiotic for the BV. I took both and afterward things seemed fine for another 2 weeks. This week, I noticed that I had a weird itchy feeling down there before bed and sure enough when I woke up in the morning it appeared I had another yeast infection. I called to make an appointment but the nurse just called back and prescribed me 2 more Diflucan pills and told me to give one to my partner. I asked again about the NuvaRing perhaps being an aid in the appearance of these infections and again she told me that it wasn't possible. At this point I am really confused. I don't know if I have a really bad yeast infection due to the ring or if my boyfriend and I are simply reinfecting each other. I also asked about whether I should discard this NuvaRing and start a new one after the infection clears up and got a very vague response of "it's your call". I really don't know whether to can the NuvaRing or keep going a little longer to see if this is all a big coincidence. I just think there isn't enough known about the NuvaRing...by my physician anyway. More side effects to note in the fourth month: weight gain, loss of sexual desire, vaginal dryness (the discharge was short-lived), irritability, crying fits. I'm just at a loss...I really wanted this to work for me...

IT'S OUT!!!!!!!!!!! What a mess I went through. For those who missed my prior posts, I got my Mirena in June 2008 after I got married. Even though I'm 29, I'm a medical student and not ready for a baby.. Within weeks I had oily skin, oily hair, hair loss, sore breasts, and no sex drive at all. But I never had a single period after the second month, so I was happy!
By August or September I was gaining a lot of weight (20lbs) and started feeling "brain fog" and fatigue. By December and January I was seeing neurologists for SEVERE migraines and dizziness. In April I developed symptoms like MS such as tingling/numbness in my head, face, and one foot... profound fatigue, and incapacitating dizziness.I've had every test done from thyroid workups to MRIs/MRAs and nerve conduction studies. I was on 3 different migraine prescriptions and was even getting nerve blocks in my neck for them.
In May I became withdrawn, irritable, depressed, and had anxiety attacks. I'm not ever a moody person, and never had PMS. But here I am, crying for no reason, yelling at my husband, snapping at my mother, and SO FREAKING EXHAUSTED that going to work is impossible, driving the car seems dangerous (severe brain fog.... like I'm drugged), and even just doing the dishes or feeding the pets takes all my effort (with tears) to complete. I don't feel like myself at all.
I found this website and thought perhaps all these symptoms were from the Mirena. So I found a new OBGYN who was awesome and said he'd take it out. I went to have it removed but the first a$$hole who put it in for me cut the strings too short so they could not be grabbed. The new doc tried to reach them but couldn't. I ended up having to have THE MOST PAINFUL PROCEDURE OF MY LIFE.... I had to take cervical dilation pills and then get a hysteroscopy which is where they shove a camera into your uterus to look around and find the little sucker. The cramps were unbelievable.... 10 times worse that getting it placed. (Mind you I've never had children so it was really bad). After he found the strings, he grabbed them and pulled. I thought I was going to die.... my poor cervix had a scope in it, an instrument holding it still, a dilator in place, a speculum in the hole, and then an instrument went in along side the scope and pulled the little bugger out. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I was in a hot sweat worse than menopause I bet!
So here I am, home, bleeding, only minor cramps. But now I wonder... how long will it be until the depression and brain fog go away? I want to be myself again. I want to be happy. I want to laugh instead of cry. I WANT TO HAVE ENERGY. My greatest fear is that I went through all the pain of putting it in, taking it out, and the cost, and the depression, fatigue, and brain fog won't go away, meaning it wasn't the Mirena to begin with. (If that was the case, I could have dealt with the weight gain, oily hair, and migraines as long as I had the nerve blocks). But I find it hard to believe that the Mirena is not the cause since so many of you women say the same thing. BUT.............. most of you had the Mirena placed after having a baby, so it's possible it was PPD?
THIS IS MY QUESTION TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE.... did any of you WHO HAVE NEVER HAD CHILDREN have these things after getting the Mirena? Also, isn't it weird that the severe fatigue, depression, and really bad brain fog started after 9-10 months of having it and not sooner? I was on OCPs before the Mirena and did fine.... but this time I am so depressed and irritable, dizzy, and FREAKING TIRED TIRED TIRED.
:( How long until I feel better if it was the Mirena?

Hello all,
First of all, I am relieved to hear I am not alone in this. Second though, I'm sorry others are suffering this much! This is horrible. Besides the unpredictable bleeding and terrible cramping, I have been battling bacterial vaginosis for the last few months. I am convinced the mirena iud is the cause. On my last visit to the doctor on 5-13-09, he prescribed antibiotics yet again and said to "give it some time" and come back in August. That is when I am due for my annual exam. When I am on the antibiotics, the cramping, bleeding and discharge stop, but as soon as it's finished, it all starts again. Like a few other comments I've read, I too have no sex drive and am so dry, sex hurts sometimes. Please let me know if anyone else has experienced problems with BV with the mirena iud. Thank you and best of luck to all of you!!!!!

I also had mirena and kept getting yeast infections and BV infection. I had the evil thing for 5 months then I had it removed. I had hair loss ,depression, low energy, mood swings out this world, and always feeling nauseated. I also had weight gain when the Doctor says it don't make you gain weight which is so untrue. I feel a little better now that its gone. Im still not 100% Im more like 75%.Its only been one month from having it removed. No more BV or Yeast infection because I was getting this every month. I have had a very heavy period since its been out. I found a website to make a lawsuit on and its ******. This birth control needs to be taken off the market for good!

I had the Mirena for about 8 months up until 3 days ago. . I have 2 kids, 3 and 2, I am in a monogamous relationship, and at first I thought it was great until I started having BV infections that would just not go away. . they were really weird infections, not any discharge, just super uncomfortable!! and half the time my cultures would not show infection. . but I had all the symptoms. . I also was a Beta Strep carrier during my last pregnancy< i have no idea if this would make me have worse symptoms or not I did have off and on cramping that was not fun to deal and a lot of spotting, but I did not want another pregnancy. about 3 and a half weeks ago, another infection came, at first I thought it was a bladder infection, but then it got worse and the pain was just not bearable. My doctor gave me Clindamycin. . didn't work, then a weeks worth of Levaquin, that didn't work either. . finally, she suggested to take the Mirena out. . and gosh I was glad I did! when she took it out, it had a yellowish discharge on it . . has anyone ever experience this? she said that it was very odd, when an IUD is taken out, it should be clean. . I have been starting to feel better in the past few days, but I feel like this Mirena IUD really screwed me up! I wish I never got it, had done more research on it, etc. . has anyone had any of the same symptoms? I feel like I am going crazy, hopefully now that it is gone, i can get my body back to normal!

This site and you ladies saved me!!!!!! I thought I was going crazy! I am having so many side effects mentioned. I started the ring because I was on depo and was tired of gaining weight and breaking out, etc. In my earlier BC years I maintained 125lbs now thanks to depo and the ring I am 150lbs and it won't go away, even while exercising 4 days per week. Anyways, I also had a sinus infection that I was treated for 2x's during my ring bout. While this was going on I started having panic attacks, then I had a couple bacteria infections(BV) followed by YI's which of the 5-6 diflucans I took none worked. I have been on the ring for 5 months and last week I started my sixth ring. Over the last month I have experienced intense burning, irritation, raw feeling, NO SEX DRIVE, (It hurts too bad) it had been going on for some time but this month had been the worst. I went to DR. and they diagnosed me with cervicitis. WTF??? I had no idea what it was! I had never heard of it.. I assume after researching the causes of cervicitis that the Nuvaring put pressure on my cervex and caused the inflammation b/c I do not have STD"s. My boyfriend had to also be treated along with me by antibiotics b/c its considered an STI.Last night I threw the ring I had in away after reading the postings of this site and I"M DONE with this torture device... I know that had I not got rid of it I would keep feeling all the wonderful symptoms i had been rewarded with! Now I am looking forward to a long nasty painful heavy period after being on BC for 10+yrs.. I am done with all BC!!!! TOO MANY side effects, and I am ready to let my hormones return to normal. Guess its back to condoms and puling out in the hopes they work.. Could anyone tell me how long until this burning and irritation goes away that has discontinued use of the ring??? I would greatly appreciate any comments or answers.

hello ladies I to had the mirena placed jan 27, 2009 after giving birth to my beautiful baby in December. Since having the mirena I have been extremely moody, extremely nauseous, depressed as hell and I feel tons of pressure in my uterus like im about to get my period but i don't get it. My lower back hurts so bad and to make the situation worse I can not get rid of BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS!!! If you r not familiar with BV its a bacterial infection caused by my mirena which gives my Vajay jay a foul smell, tons of itching and lots of disgusting smelling discharge. I hate this darn mirena and plan to get it taken out asap! Ladies who don't have it, DON'T GET IT!!!

I have had mine now for almost 5 years. I have had adult acne the whole time and never ever had it as a teen! I feel bloated as well all the time and I have zero sex drive and when I do have sex it is painful. I also can relate to other women who have posted on here and mentioned that they did not feel fresh down there. That is something that constantly bothers me. I used to think maybe I had BV or something going on and would go in and it would turn out to be nothing. I cannot wait to get this thing out. After reading all these post I have made up my mind. This is coming out ASAP.

I have had my mirena for 3 years now and for the most part enjoy it. The only side effect i have had is i get bacterial vaginosis (BV) quite often. I never had BV in my life until i had the mirena for about 1 1/2 years. i do like the fact that i don't have to worry about taking a birth control pill daily or worry about getting pregnant. It definitely is affective considering my partner and i never use precaution when having intercourse. i guess i would prefer dealing with BV for a week then another child for a lifetime!

I'm so glad I found this web site! My side effects:weight gain, depression, constant spotting, muscle pains, breast tenderness, sharp pains (like something is poking me on the inside), bleeding during intercourse (gross it drips like a waterfall) and worse of all THE DISGUSTING SMELLY CONSTANT BROWN DISCHARGE! This is embarrassing, my husband thought that I had an affair and caught a STD! I've gone to the doctor every six months to check if there is something wrong; maybe BV or some type of infection but NOTHING is wrong! I'm getting my Mirena out this week. For all the ladies trying to get it out and the doctor is charging an outrageous fee: try Planned Parenthood.

I've been on the mirena for 2 months now and within the past month I've been noticing this constant vaginal discharge that has a not so pleasant odor. This too had made me very self conscious when being intimate. I thought maybe it was some type of vaginal infection like bv or something but all my test results come back normal.
Migraines that hurt so bad I feel like I'm gonna die. Irritability with my fiance and daughter. My sex drive is not quite what it used to be (I'm only 26)!!!!!! I already have a history of anxiety but it's been controlled with the use of medication. I started using the mirena and now I'm starting to have more anxiety attacks even on medication with had never happened. They keep increasing my dosage but I'm starting to think that it's the mirena that's making it worse. I'm scared of birth control pills because I am very forgetful but I think taking a pill everyday is way better than nasty discharge and constant migraines.

I am experiencing persistent nausea - similar to being pregnant (which I am not!). My Dr. wants me to use Clindess once a week for 3 months (!!!) as we have been unsuccessful in treating the BV with anything else but I seriously cannot take it. I cannot function with nausea like this for the next 3 months!!!

I had mine fitted 2 years ago. I immediately gained 7lbs, i get headaches, i crave the worst foods, i get tingling in my hands and feet, my face is hairy luckily blond hairs tho! And to top it all off I get brown discharge that lasts for 7-10 days in place of my period oh and the same thing again when I ovulate for about 3-5 days! I feel fat and bloated constantly and although I still have a sex drive I'm so embarrassed about the discharge! And niggly pains in my ovaries, for 2 years I have constantly been to my doctor as I think I have constant thrush or BV and its not! I've realized its this coil oh and the mood swings. I'm gonna get it removed but not sure what to replace with..................help!

I posted here on July 15, and would like to update.
(I had been on Yasmin for 3 years and got off it at the end of June, then experienced severe migraine and fatigue as well as weight gain of 6lb in a few days)
On July 16 I had a little bleeding, and migraine stopped. Then, within a few days, my skin and hair became very oily. A few pimples appeared on my face. I hadn't had a pimple for 6-7 years and my skin had been dry. I keep losing and gaining a few pounds in a day, and my fingers and face swell especially when I get up in the morning. I had migraine and felt extremely tired on August 12 - 15. On August 16, I got my 'period' that felt fake - even lighter than when I was on Yasmin. It started very slowly, and very light flow continued for about 5-6 days. No cramp.
I don't feel normal yet. I get water retention, and my skin is still very oily. I got a pimple on my neck and some on face. My skin feels very irritated and feels like there're tiny pimples all over my face. I feel overly worried about things that are beyond my control.
Good news is my sex drive recovered and I haven't had yeast or BV.
I hope we feel better (normal) soon. I will update again. Thank you for reading.

20 pound weight gain in 4 years-ok maybe not all due to Mirena, but I am active and eat right. My mood swings were terrible since day one, but I thought it was just the stresses of life. Constant migraines-that no pain reliever cured-CAT scans discovered NADA. Anxiety and depression that I never experienced prior to insertion. Low energy and fatigue. Recurring BV-this is what helped me to decide to remove it. I loved the fact that I had no period-although it just isn't natural. Sex drive was ok, but no where near what it was.

I have been experiencing the same side effects. I asked my OB if it could be caused by the NuvaRing, but she said it wasn't. I'm not so sure. I have been treated for BV every month since I started. The smell is horrid and I feel awful. I haven't noticed any weight gain and I have been married 5 years so I don't know about losing my sex drive, but I have noticed when we do have sex it's painful as all hell. I just started my first week of this cycle...and already I have the smell and itchiness. I'm so fed up! :( I can't take the pills, or the patches or the shots, I thought this would be my savior...I guess not...

I am a 34 yr old mom of 2 and have had my Mirena for 4 and 1/2 years. I actaully have been having a great experience, but again, have the same weight gain issues with almost no loss, no matter what. MY BIG QUESTION: has anyone else experienced mysterious vaginal discharge and symptoms? Starting about a year ago, I began having mystery discharge and have been to 7 different doctors who have tested for everything under the sun, and FOUND NOTHING. they can see it, keep giving me yeast treatments. etc, but in 2 or 3 months, it is right back. There is a pungent fish odor, especially after sex with my hubby, which Dr's have been saying is normal... MAYBE NORMAL FOR THEM, not me!! I actually thought it was due to a lack of hormones now that my IUD is ending is life.. However, I did have a couple of crazy panic attacks, which I have never had, the dryness for sex and friction is intense, and my hair has been thinning, which I thought was just me... Can anyone let me know if you've had the vaginal symptoms... I know no one wants to talk about it, but I have to ask!!

Ive been on NuvaRing for the past 1 1/2 years. I was on the patch - or Orthro Evra. I had consistent vaginal problems including yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis (BV) - at least once every 2 months - not fun! Since starting the NR, I haven't had any bacterial problems or yeast infections, but I have noticed the lack of sex drive and depression. Once a month when my menstrual cycle comes around I'm like a loose canon. I could be very moody, snappy, or just down right sad - about nothing. I guess you have to sacrifice somethings to achieve others. I'm glad I don't have infections anymore, but is there something else I could do to help with the emotional side effect?

Started taking 2 1/2 days ago for BV. Also taking Flagyl. I have noticed a thick discharge that resembles pottery clay!! I've heard the grayish discharge is normal and can last up to 2 weeks. I was wondering what else may be in store so that there are no surprise side-effects.

wow so i was completely freaking out because i just couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. My breasts were killing me-which i was beginning to think i was prego, but wasn't seeing ne real reason why i should be. I started having mood swings, feeling extremely depressed, and breaking down and crying over every little thing in my life. I keep getting migrains (which i have never had before) and feeling dizzy to the point of passing out, and nausea. Also i have excess discharge, and kept feeling like i had a yeast infection but realized that it was simply just the ring that is irritating me. Im completely fed up with feeling this way, and just dont want to deal with the emotions, or pain anymore. Im going to my gyno on monday to try and figure out a different type of birth control to go on. Its going to be rough sticking it out through the rest of this week!!

I have been on Yasmin for about 6 months now. I have had a vaginal infection for about 3 months now. I have been given antibiotics in pill form twice along with vaginal inserts twice. My culture came back negative for yeast and for bacterial vaginosis. My gynocologist said that only certain strains of BV are tested for, so I had to have another culture done. I am currently waiting for the results. My symptoms are heavier discharge, light itching once in a while, and my discharge has a slight smell to it. Nothing foul or offensive like bacterial vagisnosis, but it is no longer odorless. Anyone else experience anything like this on Yasmin? I'm wondering if the change in discharge is just from the pill and not an infection. After finding this site, I am definetly asking to switch birth control pills when my doc calls with my results. I have Polycystic Ovary syndrome, so I have to stay on the pill. Anyone have any recommendations for a new pill?

my insertion was so bad i literally almost kicked the doctor as an instant reaction and yelled a cuss word... i had a c section delivery so pain full doesn't even describe that pain it was unbearable.. but the cramping starting the moment after insertion to about a month ago was i think worse then the c section pain id be at work almost on the floor in a ball crying in pain and the doctor said take Tylenol it will go away and nevvvvver did... i still get random cramps and sharp pains
i never had bv until i was pregnant during the pregnancy i had it one time and thought it was gone... after i got the mirena put in ive have 4 cases of bv this is November., and 3 uti's.. i got the mirena in march i believe... that is not good for my body to be on antibiotics like that ... lately ive been having terrrrrible pain when i pee like above my pubic bone.. my first thought was a uti ... went to er hoping to get an antibiotic once again... blood urine ctscan everything was normal... er doctor said its probably my mirena and i should get it taken out... i called my obgyn and she insisted i keep it in and thats not the mirena giving me those pains!!! why are these doctors so against taking it out i mean i'll get on the pill i don't care i thought the mirena would be handy u know not worrying about missing a pilll!!! wellllll i wish would have never decided to get it in ive had painful sex , very emotional, pain in general, it terrible...
alssssso my boyfriend and i obviously do not use condoms bc the birth control... now we have to use them bc hes been having a burning sensation when he pees like so bad and painful to where his legs almost buckle ... he was talking to his best friend about it and he said hes experiencing the sammmmme thing and his girl is on mirena ... they've come to the conclusion theyyyy are having a reaction to the hormone released from the mirena and it makes complete sense i don't care condom or no condom it doesn't bother me... but its the fact ... he said he felt it at one point which the doctor said your boyfriend shouldn't feel a thing... sorry if thats tmi but while having sex i feel it bad and it ruins the mood for sex with me at least...
i didn't have a pd for roughly 3 months now its heavy and clotty... then the next day nothing then the next clotty again im soooooo sick of it thank god i stumbled across this sight in search if the reaction my man was having... but now i don't feel alone for all my problems ive been having!!!!
