Like most of you all I am on Topamax 100mg. I am a 27 year old female that has suffered from severe migraines for over 20 years that would last up to 2-3 days and completely debilitated me. I would bleed from my tear ducts from the extreme pressure and I would need to be in a quiet, cold, closed off room to be left alone until the migraine was gone to continue on with my life. It was ruining my life and taking over my day to day routine. I could never really commit to anything without the constant worry in the back of my mind about a possible migraine until I found Topamax. Now on Topamax I went from 4-5 migraines weekly to 1-2 monthly, it is truly amazing, however there is a catch. Although the medication is wonderful and I will never get off of it at the rate of success that I am at, I do have side effects. I have extreme tingling in my extremities, (hands, feet) along with my face. It feels like they are constantly asleep. I also have noticed the poor tasting carbonating drinks along with my taste buds changing with certain foods that I use to be so fond of. I also have a very smokey haze where it almost feels euphoric if I wake up in the middle of the night. I have horrible nightmares of people that I have not seen in or thought of in years, memory loss and spelling issues-all goes away after 3-4 months of uses. I had shortness of breath, however that subsides as well with the use of the medications along with several other side effects. I have lost over 30lbs that is along with diet, so I can't say it is all Topamax. I have noticed little nodules that have been showing up on my hands since I stared taking the medication that I am in ? about I have a call in to my neurologist to see if he has heard of any such thing. Other than that I love the medication, because if not having migraines is one of the side effects-lol I can handle the side effects. I hope that this will help anyone that might have anything similar to what I am going through. If you can shed some light on my nodule situation please let me know. Thanks

I have been taking Topamax for just under a year for severe migraines, and at first everything seemed fine. I wasn't worried about the flat tasting carbonated drinks; I just cut those out. I did not experience weight loss but there again that's not why I was taking Topamax so I didn't mind. The Topamax did work to reduce the number of migraines I had each month although I still got maybe one a week. The fuzziness in the brain did bother me somewhat. I have always been good at adding up columns of numbers quickly and I could not do that anymore, and words often escaped me. These were worth it for the migraine trade off.
But about eight months ago I started noticing I was having these terrible anxiety attacks, mostly in the middle of the night. I would wake up and feel terrified about everything, something I had never experienced before. Even during the day I would often have this low grade anxiety all the time. Very unpleasant. I didn't even think to question that it was the Topamax causing this, Then about six months ago I began feeling extremely depressed even though I do take a low grade antidepressant to also help with the migraines. My Doctor switched the antidepressant but it did not help; the depression just kept getting worse. By last month the depression was so bad I was really a mess. Crying, feeling hopeless. Between the anxiety and the depression it was debilitating.
So I went online and really searched the idea that perhaps it was the Topamax causing these issues. Sure enough there it was; lots of people have problems with anxiety and depression while on this drug. Currently I have been weaning off the Topamax in the past week and unfortunately I'm having rebound migraines because I've had one every day for the past week, but I'm determined to get through this. The depression and anxiety were just too disturbing and debilitating.
For anyone who is considering Topamax for migraines I would say just educate yourself about these side effects and monitor yourself closely. It can be worth the try but it can have serious repercussion too. For anyone considering taking Topamax for weight loss I would say "don't be a fool". These meds were developed for serious neurological conditions like Epilepsy. To take them to merely lose weight is frivolous and irresponsible to your health.

I am on my second time around with Topiramate (generic Topamax). It has been a year, and I have no reason other than weight loss to take this drug. I also don't know if the online generic versions are really Topamax except I do experience some of the side effects I read about, the tingling arms and legs, the itching, and the foul tasting carbonated drinks. I have started at 25 mg. per day 3 days ago, and am at 250 mg today with no cut in appetite except an hour after I take the pills. Do you think they are even real?

I started Topamax a month ago. My neurologist told me to start out taking 50mg in the morning and evening. I am a nurse and have read that this med needs to be started out on small doses and slowly increase every few days. When I questioned him about it, I was told that I should be fine. Although I did not follow his directions and start out small and increase it every 3 days. After about a week I was on the full dose of 100mg daily. All carbonated drinks tasted flat, I was having a funny taste in my mouth, and I was sleeping more. Within the past week, I have been having numbness in my hands and feet to the point that my hands go completely numb. The tighter I tried to grip something, the worse it got. I also am having severe dizziness. I am unable to stand and walk without feeling like I'm going to get sick and fall. Forget trying to drive. I work 45 mins away and have no other option on getting to work. During the time that I have started to have the dizziness, I have also noticed a drop in my blood pressure. I do not even have to be standing or moving to have the vertigo start, I can be laying down. When I called the Dr, I was told to abruptly stop the med. No weaning. Everything I can pretty much deal with but, my main concern is the severe vertigo (dizziness) and low blood pressure. Is anyone else having this issue?

I have been on Topamax for 4 months and so far the migraines I have suffered for 40 years are gone. Great Some side effects like can't stand carbonated drinks. Reaction time is a little slower. I stress out a little more then I used to. I get really tired at the end of the day. I used to be a night owl but now love my sleep. Question to you all. Any one had problems with their teeth? Such as pain, fillings falling out? Let me know.

Heartburn; shortness of breath; feels like a huge balloon is inside me, from the bottom of my chest, to my throat. Have difficulty even talking. Now there's headaches at nighttime. I'm a very healthy 40-yr-old woman, yet I feel like I'm embarking on something very bad. I'm drinking bottles of bubbly water and rolls of Rolaids to get myself to burp and relieve the pressure. My internist doesn't think it's the Levaquin, but I thought it from day 1.

I am a 32 y/o female that was put on Topamax 10 days ago for migraines. I am taking 25mg twice a day so far, and the side effects I have experienced are all carbonated drinks taste flat; including beer, and if I take it close to bed time, I cannot sleep. The medication actually revs me up! Nothing i cannot handle. I have not had any problems with loss of appetite, nausea or diarrhea. Sure, sometimes I feel a little spacey, but I did that even before I started the medication. My doctor did tell me that you do need to drink plenty of water and eat plenty of protein. Also, when I start to feel a little spacey, eating a small amount of sugar seems to help with that... I have had a few headaches since starting the medication, but I haven't had a full blown migraine!!! I will continue to keep you posted. So far, I haven't had any side effects that i can't live with and by reading the posts and talking with several other people on the medication, it seems like the side effects are temporary and improve as your body "adjusts" to the medication. I am a nurse and I guess I am at at advantage because I am educating people on daily basis about this very issue!

My doctor put me on Topamax for migraines, but I can not handle the effects. I just started the 75 mg dose just as I was moving into a new college apartment with new roommates, and I felt like I was going crazy! I couldn't eat anything without feeling completely ill, I was spacing out, and I couldn't remember words.. for three whole days I couldn't remember the word 'tapestry.' I finally had to look it up in the dictionary.. not a good sign for a college student. The worst, though, was the overwhelming sense of panic that was getting worse by the day. I was no longer myself! The last straw was a panic attack, complete with hypernentilating. I have never felt so scared in my life. I actually had to go the ER to get something to calm myself down.
So, I decided to stop taking it. My parents talked to my pharmacist, and she told them that Topamax IS the type of drug you can stop "cold turkey." But after a week, I feel almost as bad as I did when I was on the drug! I still can't eat anything. Also, I wake up hours before my alarm goes off, completely sick at my stomach. I feel panicky and nervous. I have several bouts of diarrhea and this morning I almost didn't make it. I share a bathroom with three (normal!) girls, and it is getting to be embarrasing and annoying. Please, can anyone tell me.. when do the side effects go away?? I want to be a normal 19 year old again!

I have been a migraine sufferer for over 13 years and have run the gammut of medications to prevent and deal with them. My mother took Topamax a couple of years ago with disastrous results. I didn't realize, but I guess she was so loopy and forgetful that it was enough to cause my grandmother and stepfather to perfom an "intervention" to get her off of it. So, here I am a couple years later starting it myself, wondering if the side effects are worth the trade off. I'll be honest and say that I love Coke. I mean, loved. Carbonated drinks of all ethnicities taste like slimy metal now. How disappointing. And considering that if I went a day without drinking a Coke, I would get a wicked migraine, I've resorted to putting Crystal Light Energy (Wild Strawberry) in my water to give me the needed caffeine.
I've also noted tingling in my face, kinda like numbness. Nothing that is earth-shattering, but noticeable. I get dizzy a lot. I've also lost about 5 lbs since starting the medicine. And today, I could not find the word "prescription" in my mental warehouse. Not a difficult word on a normal day. I've only been on Topamax for a week though. I'm going to give it a good month to see if the side effects dissipate. But if I get any stupider, I'm going to have to go another route.

Taking Topamax for 2 years started out at 25 mgs 3 times a day for a mood stabalizer (bi-polar). Had tingling in hands and feet sometimes in face. Lost waight, pop tasts nasty, sleepy, short term memory loss, slurred speach. Now I take 100mg at bed time have no symptoms except I still am able to controll my eating (had a problem with over eating) no more road rage but I still felf a little depressed and did cry so I was not to stable until Citalopram 10mg at bedtime and Adderall XL 10mg in the morning was added. Now I finally feel like a totaly normal person. No more anxiety, mood swings, crying, paranoia,or any other weird stuff. I feel pretty good. Rarely I get pins and needles in my hands or feet or I forget where I put something.

I began taking Topamax for severe migraines. I used to get them to the point I was in tears daily. Since I started it the migraines have decreased, although they are extremely painful when I do get them. My side effects include the tingling in my hands, feet, and face. I also have the bad tase of carbonated drinks. And my right eye tends to twitch after taking it. I also have had nauseau, which I thought was the stomach flu. I also have found myself places that I didn't remember going to. Anyone else have this one? I also get the detached feeling when driving so I have people drive me around more often, which is a bit frustrating. My side effects have tended to get better as I get used to the medicine though. I still cannot drink carbonated beverages and I still get the tingling though. If I experience anymore side effects I will be sure to post them.

I've been on Topamax for about 8 months now. I lost about 15lbs, but I didn't need to lose weight...and it keeps coming off. I can't drink carbonated drinks and my feet fall asleep. The worst is getting stuck on my words. I work in Real Estate and when I'm trying to explain a contract to a client, I feel stupid when I can't think of the words I need to say.....I know what I need to say, but it doesn't come out....FRUSTRATING!!!!! I also see trails, kinda like I'm on a weird trip or something. And when my daughter's kindergarten teacher asks me to help with something, she has to explain it to me a couple of times.....I just can't get it. Maybe they should call it Dopamax. Oh yeah, I take 200mg/day.

I stared Topamax about a month ago and at first I was completely out of it. I couldn't remember anything to save my life, my speech was slurred and my brain was just in a fog...and I'm only 25. After about 2wks that eventually went away, however, I still cannot drink carbonated drinks, that taste flat and have a tangy taste to them as well, its gross. The one side effect that really bothers me about this medication as well is that I'm always nauseous. I haven't weighed myself lately but I definitely have lost weight because I never want to eat anything. The nausea seems to be more of an issue than the migraines. I was getting them about 3-4 times a week, now I get them about 1-2 times a week. By week 4 on the medication I started to break out on my face/chest/back really bad too, and I haven''t had acne since I was a teenager. The other odd thing is I feel like I've constantly had my period while on this medication too. Has anyone had any of these side effects as well? It's only been a month so I figure I will try a little bit longer and see if it helps or if I have to go up a little bit more in dosage if it helps but at this rate I'm thinking I may just need to try a different medication. The other bad thing is that I have become extremely agitated lately, which I'm sure my poor boyfriend can agree with because he gets the worst of it. I feel like my personality definitely has changed on this med...
