Im 29 Years of age, male, the doctor gave me AVELOX 400 for chronic sinusitis 2 days of taking it it was ok. the third day is a nightmare. Begin to have bad dreams, confusion, my blood pressure started to rise up and different parts of my skin begin to swell and started to itch. the worse part is my penis started to itch and then afterwards began to swell and lesion on in. so freaking scary. Please don't take this drug. and for those who made this drug. BAYER right? Please recall Avelox. Medicines are supposed to cure people, not worsen the problem. not only BAYER but all other companies who sells drug which have serious side effect to recall your medicines. If i were only a billionaire i will buy all your medicines and burn it all. O well humans sort of Guinea Pigs. Thats the reality.

hi. just thought i might warn you for whatever it is worth. I have been on mirena for about 4 years. it was my answer from god sincerely because i had terrible periods. my period got so light it basically disappeared. yes!
then about 2 years ago, i started with terrible tension headaches, slowly they began to rule my life-- so that the only relief i got was going to sleep at night. only to awake with the same bandanna wrapped around my head so tight i could barely take it. but with 3 kids grown, a business to run, i figured it was stress. then i started with dizzy spells, almost falling over in the bathroom. A CT scan revealed that i had chronic sinusitis- but something i have lived with all my life. no tumor thank god. so what next-- guess what-- yes over the years the hormone from this drug has overloaded in my system. so make your own decision. was good while it lasted but it will take a while now for it to get out of my system. starting to subside. thanks.

THIS IS TO MR SINUSITIS AND HIS ARROGANT COMMENT. I am a 22 year old male United States Air Force Reservist who currently has chronic sinusitis and just completed my 7 day trial of AVELOX. I just read everyone comments on the side effects of this horrible pill, and i am thankful i am now going insane lol. I have had the nausea, headaches, very bad body pains, tendon pains and very vertigo feeling ( almost like i am no longer human, too hard to explain.) i am very angered at the person ( mrsinusitis) who had the audacity to call everyone fat and the only reason why we have these side effects is because we are lazy, unhealthy human beings. SORRY GUY... I AM VERY FIT, IN THE MILITARY, EAT VERY VERY HEALTHY AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED THESE HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS MYSELF. so please, before you speak, think about what you say. Just because you may not have these side effects, does not mean the thousands of others that are experiencing this are not. THANK YOU. I FEEL ALL OF YOUR GUYS PAIN. AVELOX IS THE WORST MEDICATION IVE EVER TAKEN, other than the peanut butter shot in the butt in bootcamp :)

headache, nausea, body pains, depression, vertigo feeling, cant think clearly, tendon pains, feet feel like they are swollen, back pains, blurred vision.

GOTTA LOVE IT!!!

My doctor gave me samples of these just today for chronic sinusitis, a 20 day course!! Well the horse pill sized 3 weeks of augmentin didn't work.
Since there was no information on the drug with the samples I decided to google and this is what I first see. :0
Then I went to the site for avelox and confirmed avelox caused all these bad reactions. My goodness, thanks for your all postings.

I had a 20 mg shot of Kenalog in 2008 for chronic sinusitis. This year, I had another 20 mg, and a week after another 20mg. My doctor seemed to "throw" the shots at me because he didn't know what else to do. I wish he would have explained the terrible side effects. I have a large discolored indent on my left upper arm and have gained almost 10 lbs.In addition, the skin on my chest is completely broken out, and I almost never get pimples. I am a young active college student who is extremely frustrated by this. Does anyone know when the weight gain will subside or if they have had any similar issues? It is so frustrating that a doctor would give something so harmful to their patients, because it is clear from everyone's posts I am not alone.

I suffer from chronic sinusitis and rhinitis. When I develop severe sinus pain and headaches, I break down and get antibiotics from doctor. I had an allergic reaction to Levaquin (hives), so the doctor put me on Avelox. It worked well and I've probably had it 4-5 times in the past 2-3 years. I had one round of it a couple of weeks ago and was fine. However, yesterday I was suffering from the pain, nausea, etc again so the doctor gave me another round of Avelox. Within 15 minutes my ears and throat started itching, then the palms of my hands started itching like crazy and turned bright red. Itching and rash spread to my underarms, then to my chest and back. I was feeling a little tipsy too. I knew what it was so I took Benadryl right away and called the doctor. He confirmed the allergic reaction and took me off the drug, said to take the Benadryl, drink a lot of water and no meds until this is out of my system. Bottom line: an allergic reaction can occur at any time, even if you've had the drug before. I keep Benadryl on hand at all times, just for that reason.

I have severe allergies and cronic sinusitis... like a lot of people on here I have taken all the allergy drugs they make for the past 9 years... Ive had tons of procedures done and sinus surgery last Feb '08. Nothing helps. Ive taken oral steriods many times but recently my new ENT decided to give me a Kenalog shot in Sept. Nothing was explained to me other than it was a steroid. The nurse put it in my left shoulder. I have had all the symptoms people are describing on here except the indent. I have been progressively getting sicker and feeling worse and worse over the past few months. I feel like I could go to bed and just stay there. Now this past Monday he gave me another Kenalog shot in my left shoulder. I heard something on a tv show that it causes depression so I jumped on this site and feel sick about all the messages I have read about people's terrible side effects. I feel like my doctor who I trusted let me down. I am so worried that my shoulder is going to have a big grey dent like everyone is describing on here. I am just so tired of being ill.

So far i am a 14 year old boy facing prednisone and have been on this drug over 4+ month periods at 10 mg first time and 100 second time. I have chrons's disease and it is hard to treat when it has a flare, so they have to put me on prednisone. I have experienced some of the worst side effects imaginable along with many other suffering victims of this drug, and they include: Headache, Severe Acne, Flu-Like Symptoms, High Blood Pressure, 50+ Pounds Gained, Moon face, Stomach Pains, and Much More. After i have been weened completely off i have notice these: SCARY Heart Palpitations, Out of Breathe, Feels like something is beating in my stomach, and feels like my heart drops to my stomach like pacing.

While taking this, I have experienced water on my knee, aching in my leg and then a problem with the right knee, aching in arms and shoulders. All of this could be something else, or at least the fluid on my knee. I had an MRI Saturday and will hear in a few days.
So what is the best med for sinus infection which is why I am on this.
Thanks.

PRAISE GOD for all of the stories shared on this site. And I've only read page one. My husband called me back today to say that he "googled" Singulair and found some interesting things (to say the least). While we were on the phone, my three-year-old was in the throes of another meltdown, kicking me, hitting me, throwing whatever he could get his hands on. My older two boys, 8 and 12, were ordered, once again, to lock themselves in their rooms to avoid being hurt by him. He will throw stuff, bite, hit, kick, and, at times, spit on us. This disturbing behavior is rather constant lately. He is like a mad man. Very scary.

Caleb has been on Singulair since about age 1, when he was diagnosed with chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis. Unfortunately, we initially equated his rages with the onset of "terrible two's" and dismissed his behavior to a chorus of "oh, he's just a boy!" My husband felt, at times, that I was just not disciplining him properly. I intuitively knew, having raised two other boys, that this behavior was abnormal, even for severe tantrums. We received a variety of suggestions from his pediatrician, caregivers, and grandparents, all to no avail. We have several calm days but things always deteriorate back to insanity. He is VERY unpredictable.

Last Thanksgiving, Caleb (age 3) was kicked out of his daycare setting for biting and hitting. Once I witnessed him run as fast as he could into a group of playing children, falling on them, kicking them. He would walk up to sweet little girls half his size and push them down as hard as he could. It was a nightmare. My husband had to take 3 weeks of leave to stay home with him while we prayed and searched for new care. We had him evaluated and he was staffed into the "developmentally delayed" program in our school district (for poor adaptive skills and personal/social behaviors). We recently had his tonsils removed, hoping that some of the sinusitis symptoms and behaviors would improve. They really haven't. This past week we have been looking into the Feingold diet. We have been PRAYING for answers. The last time we spoke with his developmental neurologist, he recommended a trial of Risperdol (sp?). We feel like more meds would be like a band-aid, not a solution. But his rage is becoming unbearable.

So, that brings us to today. I was so moved by your accounts. Unlike so many of you, we don't have much of a "before" to go by. But his "after" sounds VERY much like what you have all described. It's probably the pure rage that I see on his face that is the scariest part. And at the same time he seems desperate and vulnerable. He truly seems to snap. If we had pool chairs, I can just picture him throwing them (citing another post :).

We are going to throw the Singulair away. He will never, ever have it again. Even if this isn't the cause of his problems, I certainly don't want to exacerbate any behaviors with this toxic medicine. I will post again just to let anyone who's interested know if this changes his behavior. I am praying that my entry will help someone else, just as all the other postings have helped me. I have renewed hope.

I have copied many of your comments to a Word document. I will be sharing it with a high ranking officer at the medical clinic/hospital on Keesler Air Force Base. I hope that he will discuss this with his staff and that perhaps we can at least make a difference here. I, too, will be filing a report with the FDA. I can only pray that this medicine has not permanently altered his developing brain.

I would be interested to know how many of those who took Singulair needed to take antibiotics more frequently than they did before they took Singulair. I'll see the response then I will tell you why if it turns out that is a predictable side effect.

am 45 year old male. For many years I have had chronic allergies and chronic sinusitis with headaches/migraines as a result. On two separate occasions I tried Singulair (two different doctors). Both times I experienced severe depression, thoughts of suicide, bed ridden for about 5-7 days and the headaches got much worse. Fortunately my wife is a psychiatric nurse and she recognized the side effects and got me off the Singulair. Within a week I was back to my normal self. On both occasions I talked to my doctors and they both had not heard of any side effects, such as depression. This evening I heard about Singulair on the news, which brought me to this web site, so I thought I would just share my experiences, nothing new, just another example. Singulair seems to be a very effective medication for some…but for a few of us it can be devastating, I would just say use with caution, and be aware of the side effects.

I have suffered with chronic sinusitis for about 8 years, and concurrent asthma for about 6 years. I am a 46 year old male.

I have worked with highly noted ENT in the area, and he tried many (non-prescription) recommendations over the course of a few months, but nothing worked. I had a CT scan that showed profound sinusitis in all regions, especially the ones that nasal corticosteroids cannot reach. In an attempt to avoid surgery, which he described as risky and not particularly effective with the type of widespread sinusitis I had (my orbital lobes were involved), he then suggested I get a single intramuscular corticosteroid shot, which he administered about 10 days ago. I was not advised of any potential side effects.

I called today to ask what it was, and was told Kenalog 60mg - I was getting a prescription for something else and wanted to make sure the pharmacist knew what I already had in my system. No comment from the pharmacist.

First of all, the Kenalog has worked like a miracle drug on my sinusitis. I can breathe normally, I can fly without intense ear pain, my sense of smell and taste has returned after an absence of almost a year, and my asthma seems to have improved. Also, and perhaps strangely, I had a noticeably enlarged lymph node below my left ear on the lower part of my neck for many, many years. It felt like a pea under the skin. None of the doctors in any of my physicals expressed concern about it over the years. Since receiving the Kenalog, this node has returned to normal and I cannot feel it unless I really search for it. I thought it has just calcified and was going to remain that way forever, but perhaps it was permanently inflamed from permanent sinusitis.

The only side effect while on Kenalog that I have noticed is that following Albuterol inhalation (for the asthma), my lungs burn a little and I have a productive cough for a few hours. I suspect that two things are going on: the Kenalog has decreased bronchial inflammation, and increased a vast amount of sinus drainage, some of which is going into my lungs to be expectorated.

My doctor is an older, seasoned pro, and I trust him. I just found and read online the BMS prescribing leaflet (the one for doctors) and it is very explicit that unless the injection is given as a DEEP intramuscular injection, then local atrophy is LIKELY to occur (their words, not mine). It does appear, therefore, that the side effect of atrophy is potentially dependent on the skill of the administering doctor.

I know I will get about 2-3 months relief from this medication, but with all the very tragic tales of side effects listed here, with which I sympathize deeply, I will be reluctant to take it again.

I am hoping the skill of my doctor - and my body's own system - cope with injection without some of the more serious side effects that the people here have been experiencing, though I expect I will have to wait a couple of months to see what happens. For some of us, the drug has (so far) saved us from a life of constant misery and fatigue. I am keeping my fingers crossed and will report back.

Wishing you all well.

I am a 43 year old female who, until I found this site, thought I was dying of bone cancer - I am not even kidding. I just finished the last of my 10 day prescription for Avelox (for bronchitis and sinusitis). And I feel like I have been beaten about the head and body. Honestly, every part of my body aches and I can barely walk. I have absolutely no energy; throbbing and shooting pains up and down my arms and legs. Not to mention sharp pains in my chest area periodically. I have very clouded and unclear thinking abilities; and my neck and head hurt so bad not even an 800 mg ibuprofen helps. Oh and let's not forget the chills which are right down to the bone - I cannot get warm and I have yucky night sweats to boot. I would most certainly be interested in a class action lawsuit. I really hate that I took 10 days worth and wonder when I will start feeling better. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE AVELOX - it is not worth the painful side effects! The prescription flyer I received with the medication did not mention any of the side effects I encountered.

I was put on Levaquin for 21 days to treat chronic sinusitis and I am only 17 years old. After about the 3rd day I was having great pain in my hips and knees and we called the doctors office to say we were having some of the side effects you're supposed to notify your doctor for, and they told me to keep taking it because all medicines have side effects and not to freak out. By the fifth day I had to be rushed to the ER because of serum sickness and i finally stopped it. Now, 2 and half months later, I still walk like a 95 year old and have to use a wheelchair to get around. I've also developed hypersensitivity to cold and touch and my limbs go numb randomly.

I have chronic sinusitis and last year I came down with a really bad infection. My Ear Throat Nose Specialist was on vacation so I had to see a "Family Medicine" doctor and he gave me ketek. I had to rush to the emergency room and the doctor there took me off the ketek immediately. I had an EXTREME reaction to it, the scariest effect being the pain in my liver and sudden jaundice (which are the beginning signs of acute liver failure.) There have also been lasting effects, the worst of which being on my heart. My heart rate has always been below average, and ever since the reaction my heart rate has been recorded as abnormally fast.

I've only been on singulair for 6 days and it is now 4:23am. I just couldn't sleep tonight. I've been having the strangest dreams and I commented to my wife about them. We just laughed it off. Anyway, at this time of the morning, my EARS are "Hissing" so loudly, not ringing, however I do detect a slight pulsating tonal sound in my left ear, that I just couldn't sleep anymore. I've a history of Tinnitus but something has exacerbated my tinnitus dramatically, so much so it is keeping me awake. I think I'll be needing something to help me sleep now. Perhaps I will stay off the Singulair for now just to see if life returns to some kind of normalcy. Could it be a side effect of Singulair. I don't know but I felt like driving something through my head to stop all the loud noise. Has anyone else experienced elevated levels, or a new development of "Ringing in the Ears", commonly known as Tinnitus?

I coughed for 3 months, sometimes I coughed so hard that I would throw up it was an awful feeling, my body ached all the time, even the bottom of my feet , It hurt so bad to try and turn over at night, I had terrible headaches my symptons were very much like chronic sinusitis andI just slowed down because I didn't feel good. I've been off this medicine for 2 months and I'm feeling better but it does make me painful in the area of my kidneys on the left side and I have blood in my urine which is also a side effect and I did have an ultrasound today, I truly believe that this medicine almost killed me.

on Aug 4th I was diagnosed with a chronic sinusitis. My doctor wasn't available, so I went to an urgent care facility (what someone might call a doctor in a box), who prescribed Bactrim, telling me that "this will clear up any infection". (12 days worth, or 25 pills).

After living with the side effects, I can understand why!

The first few days on the medication I was a bit out of it. My mental acuity was off and I was feeling sluggish and constantly tired. half way though my first week I would break out in cold sweats and my face would go pale, I would feel as if I just swam the english channel, under water. Out of breath, muscle aches, and just plain tired. by day 6 I was not only feeling tired, but was feeling an uncomfortable tingle under my skin, and by day 10 was experiencing a heavy pain in my chest, and sharp abdominal spasms.

At one point I thought I might be having a heart attack.

I ran an internet search for side effects of the Bactrim, (and possibly if it reacted badly with pseudoephedrin), and found your site. I guess I'm lucky I didn't have as bad a side effect as others. (I'm setting up a visit to my doctor to have tests run on my internal organs, just to make sure).

After reading how the sulfates are used, the nearest thing I can think of is that the sulfates get into the blood, and then irritates everything the blood "touches", which gives you the skin on fire / crawling effect, and why my chest hurt so much. All that blood uses the heart as it's central local. Anything effecting the blood, would also effect that muscle.

It's been days since taking my last Bactrim (SMZ/TMP DS 800-160), and the pain in my chest hasn't gotten any better. My energy levels are returning but I'm still not able to concentrate on anything for very long, my skin still crawls, and I have reoccurring cold sweats.

Sometimes the cure is worse then the illness. I would much rather have had the sinus infection, then be leveled in this manner.

I was given Singulair by my doctor to take for severe allergic rhinitus and chronic sinusitis, in addition to the Zyrtec and oral steroids I have been taking. At first, it seemed to help with sinus congestion, but did cause problems with sleeping--nightmares and waking up "jittery" and unable to get back to sleep. Then, after about 3 weeks, I began to experience violent vertigo, to the point of being unable to function. I could barely stand, was nauseated to the point of vomiting, experiencing sweats and hot flashes. I stopped the Singulair today and will see if symptoms improve and post again in a few days.

i have been prescribed levaquin many times in the past of my chronic sinusitis, it is not until this past two weeks that i had noticed severe symptoms, pain in feet, ankle, leg, hip and shoulder, making it difficult to walk and or do stairs. i have stopped taking levaquin, for 2 days now, i am hoping my symptoms improve. should the company not put stronger warning labels on this medication? or inform the medical community of the severe adverse reaction so that they can quickly diagnose their patients when they complain of these symptoms

I have chronic and fungal sinusitis and was prescribed Singulair as of last week. I also had asthma most of my childhood but it went away around the age of 16. I am now 37 and only suffer from the allergies and sinus. Since taking the Singulair along with the antibiotic Biaxin I have started having the same tightness in my chest as when I had asthma, I have started wheezing again, am frequently dizzy and get extremely drained from the slightest exertion of energy. that being said, I exercise regularly and am very conscious of what I eat and haven't had that experience in some time. I am calling my Dr. and will stop taking this medicine as of today. Thank you for your post, I thought I was on my own, because whenever I ask Dr.'s they always say there are no side effects with this drug. Believe me , I always ask because I am generally apprehensive about taking drugs for reasons of side effects. However, after having been to several specialist over the last 35 years I've finally had to accept the fact that the only way to treat what I have and have a better qualtiy of life for me and my family is by taking something that hopefully minimizes my problems with the least side effects. Obviously, Singulair is not it. If anyone else suffers from chronic sinusitis and has found something that works with little side effects, please let me know. Thanks
Robert P

My 6 year old daughter was on singulair - 4 mg for about 9mos to help w/ chronic sinusitis. It helped for awhile but her sinuses seemed to get even worse after awhile. We upped her dose to 5 mg. It was horrible. She developed Reflux and horrific mood swings. My loving easy going child turned evil and inconsolable. I pulled her off the meds after reading this site. I called our pediatrician who said to stop it and then we should try to put her back on the 4 mg. I refused. Instead we eliminated most straight dairy from her diet and are religious about saline nasal washes every night. Her sinuses are pretty great and her moods improved dramatically. We have had her on prevacid for about 6 months and her stomach seems to have healed. We are taking her off that soon. We'll see how she does this allergy seaon and think about trying zyrtec again if we need to do something.
