I am very reluctant to take any medications, but needed something for a sinus infection that wouldn't go away after 2 weeks. Received 10 day dosage. Drug worked to clear it up, but experienced a noticeable oncoming of depression and emotional detachment from life. This drug may not be tracked for psychological side effects, which might explain the lack of forewarning by doctor's et al, but it was a clear cause and effect in my case.

Horrible experience with amoxicillin, which was prescribed for a nasty sinus infection. Major nausea, fatigue, feeling lightheaded and dehydrated. All I wanted to do was to sleep. Missed 2 weeks from work. The nausea was completely debilitating. But curiously, get hungry at the same time was feeling nauseated. When I do get some food, I have to force myself to eat it. Also had major headaches. Got sort of paranoid that something else was seriously wrong with me!
Have been off amoxicillin for a little over a week. Feeling VERY depressed and hopeless. I want so bad to get back to my normal life, but it is like I have no energy or desire to push on. I have to literally FORCE myself out of bed and to work. Very concerned here and do not want to have to start taking an antidepressant. Does anyone know how long these effects will last or what I can do? Doctor gave me an additional prescription for Cipro, but I am afraid to take it because I feel like I am trapped in a vicious cycle and these feelings will only get worse. I am not used to taking meds!!

Ok so...I started taking Loestrin 24 almost a year ago and I can't really complain too much. I've had a few pregnancy scares because of missed periods but they were just that- missed periods. And there's nothing wrong missing a period or two imo :D
About two weeks ago I ran out and couldn't refill so I neglected to take any pills for a week, figuring I would just pick back up when I could. I've since started taking them regularly again but in those two weeks my personality changed sooo much. In an attempt to describe myself I'd say I was...confused and depressed, for no real reason. My stomach was so messed up I don't even want to share the details. And the strangest thing... I've noticed two VERY SMALL spots (one on my upper thigh and one on my butt) that are slightly red and drier than the skin around it. I'm positive it's not an STD but I'm concerned nonetheless.
In conclusion, I'm gonna take my pills regularly from now on.
But seriously if anyone else has gotten weird small spots of dry skin, plz respond cause it's definitely worrying me a little.

I had the Mirena Coil inserted in Jan 2008 (age 42), for heavy and painful periods and fibroids.I was told by my Gynaecologist that ''It's the best thing since sliced bread''....It took a few months for the bleeding to slow down and I was bleeding approx every 2 weeks, sometimes bright red clots, then 'old' brown blood. I would (and still am) experiencing pain before, during and after a period, particularly in my pelvis and low back and across the front of my tummy. In July 2008 I had pain constantly for 2 weeks, yet basic swabs for std (I'm in a monogamous relationship), revealed no abnormality and no uti. I was having regular check ups with my Gynaecologist, telling her how much pain I was in. I persevered for the 'recommended' year of having it in place. In Jan 2009 I began with excruciating pain which lasted 3 weeks. I had a routine pap smear which was normal except for Actinomyces. As I was symptomatic I asked my GP to remove the Mirena. It was sent for histology and revealed it had grown Gram Positive Cocci. I am still waiting for extended culture results. A high vaginal swab also revealed I had Bacterial Vaginosis and Mixed Anaerobes. I am due to finish 3 weeks of Amoxycillin antibiotics tomorrow for the Positive Cocci, and am on my second lot of Clindamycin Phosphate inserted internally for the Bacterial Vaginosis as I was still in a lot of pain and in desperation went to my GUMed clinic which revealed I still had the BV despite having 1 lot of treatment. I am waiting for a Laparoscopy in April. I am so angry that I have suffered for over a year with the Mirena. I have no idea what my periods will be like in future or when they will return in full. This IUD has affected my relationship with my partner and family, my social life and my working life. I live in the UK and I would sue the makers if the opportunity arises.

I know that the Mirena is causing my acne. I have always had clear skin, and it's just like everyone describes, its not just regular acne, its cystic deeply scarring acne. I never used to have to worry about acne, I cannot believe how bad it has gotten. I read all about Accutane being able to help, and I have been taking just Vitamin A (that you can buy at walmart), these seems to have helped the cystic acne a little, it's not as bad as it was, I just have to take about 20 Vitamin A pills a day, but its worth it. A Dr. just prescribed me some Clindamycin Phosphate, and I will be sure to let you ladies know if it helps me get rid of the rest of the acne. If it doesn't I will go ahead and get off the Mirena, it is just a shame because it's a contraceptive that I don't have to think about taking every day, and I paid 700 dollars out of pocket. but having my face scarred for life and having acne ruin my life isn't worth it either. I guess I should mention that my hormones have been kind of crazy, and I've been more irritable than ever. I have gained weight, but I think it may be to my eating habits more than anything...we will see.

Astonishing! My 8-year-old daughter, whose age your 6-and 9-year- old perfectly bracket, began mentioning "depression" yesterday; a word we didn't know she KNEW.
It became a real concern at dinner tonight, when we had 2 favorites, French bread and broccoli, (and spaghetti, which she also likes). She wanted none of it, and said she was depressed and it was causing her not to be able to eat, though she said she had "eaten anyway" yesterday even though not wanting to. We have never discussed depression or its effects with her! She DID learn to speak long before her peers, so after stressing enormously during the meal, during which we asked her if there were "mean girls" (only one, especially mean, anyway; only a few mean, etc.) we were pretty upset, and she had red face & tears, all very unusual.
We DID wonder if this weekend's weekend's 1 a.m. trip to emergency room for strep throat and amoxicillin injection (she asks for injections, these last 3 years, being quite a food connoisseur, she can taste oral meds mixed with ANY tricky bait) but always got Rocephin; even one in each leg, last time, as her weight called for double injections, as it is apparently an unusually irritating injectable....So we questioned her closely about whether her throat or any part of her still hurt, or if she felt sick. Negative. (as I write this, she informs us she was depressed from Thursday; she received injection at 1:45 a.a.m. in the wee hours of Thursday morning)
Back to narratie: we had been gratified for ONE simple injection this time, and "--cillin" part of drug name, plus familiar milky oil suspension appearance of intra-muscular drug reminded us of OUR days of painful but unusually effective "plain vanilla" penicillin shots, which we reassured her about (yeah, we've paid our dues too, daughter) after the typically achy injection.
By dinner tonight, our daughter seemed so upset, and yet so unusually grown up in saying she was "depressed" and that she had prayed that it end, to no aviail, I got up from dinner and Googled "amoxicillin, depression" and VOILA, "two daughters" response and next response so amazingly similar, I printed them and took them to dinner table, to have her read aloud to us complimenting her on how grown up she was to describe herself as depressed. (Also, she received 5 minutes of reading towards going to Fiesta Texas on a reading program! but, how many kids will have "Amoxicillin and depression--5 minutes" on their reading logs, I wonder...Her pre-med sister called while she was reading, another treat! God is good.
Thanks for taking time to post this! I am only now learning that there is no need to argue or feel alone, confused for long about much of anything anymore, or rely on just one friend or medical practitioner--Until they censor the 'net, just GOOGLE IT. Bless you. -- And, any men, google "bladeless vasectomy" or "******" and read my 8-year long compendium of vasectomy side effects doctors don't know or don't talk about.

I am a 38 year old female prescribed clindamycin for a tooth abscess and it is the absolute worst. The main issue is stomach/intestinal problems. Unless I take it with a lot of food or some Pepto-bismol, I will puke after taking it. Also, my stomach is so bloated, I look like I'm pregnant, not exaggerating! Also, it makes you reeeeallly lethargic and I've completely lost all my energy. The only reason I am not stopping this medication is because my tooth is really badly infected, but it you do have to take it, be warned--it sucks!

I had my mirena inserted in Dec. 2007 (shortly after I delivered my daughter via c-section). My libido took a nose dive right away, I became really irritable, bloated, and I would get sharp pains just above my pubic bone. Not long after all that, my face started developing these little bumps, that short of resemble a zit, only they don't go away, and you can try to "pop" them like a zit. They started slowly, a few near my chin, and now they have traveled up to my cheeks, and under my eyes, and a few on my forehead. I had the mirena removed Sept 2008, and now a month. and an antibiotic lotion later, they are still there. I wouldn't have jumped the gun in thinking that the mirena had caused the bumps, until I started talking to a few of my friends. One who had hers inserted in Dec. as well, has even worse bumps on her face, and has an appt to have hers removed in 2 weeks., another who loves the mirena, but can't figure out why her face it getting these bumps!
They feel like zits, and kind of hurt, but when you mess with them nothing comes out, and they get more red, and spread. My fam doctor, prescribed Clindamycin, and it has done nothing but dry my skin out. Going to a derm today...wish me luck :)

I was on the medication to treat a really bad eye infection. I can tell you it was really bad for me.....I got very very sick after and now have Colitis caused by the medication. They didn't tell me that this was a possibility and it changed my life forever. If there is another drug to take I would suggest taking it and not Clindamycin because the risk's for intestinal problems are very high.

Update on my post of Aug. 11th. I did see a neurologist who was a bit skeptical, but after looking it up did acknowledge that this drug can cause tendon ruptures, etc. Later that week he did a nerve conduction study, both the one with the needles and the one where they shock the muscles. He was happy to report that I did not have any "nerve" damage. I had already told him that I did not think I had neuropathy as the numbness had gone away and was just replaced by the constant pain in my joints, etc. I then went to see my rheumatologist who was also just as skeptical that the drug could be causing all the pain I was describing. She said she had had three patients with tendon ruptures, but nothing else. I really don't care what she believes, and I told her so. I know what happened and what horrible pain I have been in ever since. I hate to report that the pain in my feet, knees, hands, hips, back and now my neck are not any better. My insomnia is some better, but I am taking more Lyrica. I tried a different antibiotic yesterday for the sinus infection called Clindamycin. OMG! I took one pill and within a few minutes had unbelievable heartburn. That lasted for 12 hours, along with reflux, burping, weird stomach noises. Now, I can't take that. Doctor called in a prescription for Augmentin this morning. Afraid to try anything now, but guess I will give it a shot. Is anyone getting any better from their joint or muscle pain? Some encourgement would be good. Thanks.

I had been on Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim for ten days when i had my allergic reaction- i went out for a run Saturday evening and about thirty minutes after my return i started breaking out into unbelievable hives and excruciating itching at this point it was only on my arms and i put some anti-itch gel on it to get better went to bed and woke up around 2 am with my lip completely swollen out i then took benadryl which controlled the itchiness- going into Sunday the hives got so bad i could hardly move my hands and then the hives spread to my feet which made it literally unbearable to walk- i have never experienced anything like this! I felt like a cripple i was hardly able to move- luckily i had a packet of steroids previously prescribed to me started taking them and immediately started to feel better i woke up Monday morning around five am and the hives had almost vanished- then when i got up to go to work on the drive in the hives were back and stronger than ever it was horrible i was driving in traffic watching my arms and hands swell in size and itching unbelievably out of control- managed to get some benadryl in my system and another steroid- made it to work- throat started closing in on me started wheesing couldn't catch my breath- ended up in the emergency room- this has been the craziest thing that has ever happened to me! The ER doctor told me that 40-60% of the population is allergic to this antibiotic- YET ITS STILL ON THE MARKET!!!!! I seriously thought at time i might die- this was the most excruciating experience i've had- and if i lapse the time i need to take my steroid the hives come back soo fast-The doctor said it can take a week for my body to metabolize the antibiotic out of my system- the lesson i learned here always do your own research on any medicine the doctor gives you to take- just bc they prescribe it doesn't always mean its the best i mean up to 60% of the population is allergic to this- had i known this i would have asked for a different antibiotic! In my case i think that it took my body so long to have its allergic reaction due to the fact when i went on the antibiotic to fight an ear infection i was also prescribed a steroid and i believe the steroid was fighting off my reaction and keeping it at bay until i ran out of that....Also anyone having this reaction DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN OR IBUPROFEN/ADVIL THIS MAKES THE REACTION WORSE- IT IS REALLY BEST TO JUST TAKE ALEVE!!

I had my Mirena put in two and a half years ago, and actually just decided this past week to get it out. I can't believe I found this site, I thought I was just crazy and that maybe the Mirena had something to do with it... my hair is falling out by the handfuls, I have no desire to have sex with my husband, in fact, I don't even think about sex anymore. I also have the nasty vaginal discharge with the horrible odor that will not go away. I have been on Clindamycin four times for this infection since the Mirena was placed, and had never had it previously. I can't seem to lose weight no matter how hard I try. Also, I seem to cry at the drop of a hat- these things are NOT normal, but I am glad to know that I'm not crazy or imagining these side effects! I had migraines as a child, they went away for a long time, but have been having them again within the past 2 years, have had maybe 6 or 7 in two years.

This was given to me for a periodontal (tooth/gum) infection. I've never taken this antibiotic before. Beside the normal (antibiotic) stomach upset and diarrhea, it was as if I was taking sleeping pills every 6 hours and generally felt like I'd been dragged behind a horse. 5 days into the medication, I started seeing flashing "crescent" lights in my vision. Needless to say, that was disturbing. It lasted for about 20 minutes before the "flashing" slowly moved to the left of my vision and then disappeared. That was a day ago and I only have 2 pills left which I will now take at 12 hour intervals. I've taken antibiotics over the years and never experienced this type of reaction. Needless to say, I will not take this particular medication again.... For the record, I'm a 62 year old Male.

I was started on Toprol-XL after a triple bypass in 2000. I had experienced several episodes of rapid heartbeats. For the next 7 years I took it daily and had no side effects that I was aware of other than feeling a little weak if I missed a dose.
During this time, I was diagnosed as a diabetic and started on Lantus insulin. I had some gastric side effects from the Metformin but other than that I was doing ok. I was and am still overweight but I was also in good enough shape to walk 30 minutes everyday on my treadmill and to hold down a stressful job.
In September of 2007 I hosted a large family reunion at my house and had no physical problems. Right after that I came down with a bad sore throat and was put on Clindamycin. At the same time, my husband went to refill my meds and came back with the generic version of my Toprol-XL. Our insurance now requires us to use generics if available. Within two weeks I was having shortness of breath just walking up the steps into my house. I at first thought it was a hang over from the sore throat and went to my GP. He had me switch back to the original Toprol-XL and I felt an almost immediate relief. However, the symptoms did not go away entirely, in fact after seeming better, they came back again. I went back to my GP. He was concerned enough to want to send me to a cardiologist. Since we had just moved here a year ago I had not visited a cardiologist as yet so this doctor was new to me and my symptoms.
So far we have done a nuclear stress test, echocardiogram, EKG's, heart cath, lung scan, and numerous blood tests. Everything looks good according to the cardiologist. And yet, I cannot walk through my house without stopping to try and catch my breath, I have had to quit work since I can no longer climb the stairs to the second floor offices, I cannot sweep a floor without having to sit down.
Is it possible that a side effect from this generic drug could have damaged something permanently? Has anyone else had any kind of problem like this?

Had a terrible allergic reaction from it.
It started as cold like symptoms and my throat and nose were terribly inflamed. I thought I had just caught something.
By the third day of this though, still using the Clindamycin not knowing this was the cause, my throat was closed up so much that I had to go to an emergency care clinic to figure out what was happening, and that it was an allergic reaction from the topical. I could barely breathe, and I choked anytime I tried to eat or drink from the severe soreness and pain in my throat. I had a high fever, chills, and green mucus in my nose and running out of my throat from my nose.
Even after discontinuing the topical, I was inflamed and infected for over a week more.
I told my dermatologist about this, yet I looked on the sheet about it afterwards and they still only recorded that I got a "sore throat" from it, and that was why I could not use it again. It was a LOT worse than just a sore throat, it was potentially quite dangerous.

I got serum sickness from Clindamycin. I had enormous hives everywhere, along with angioedema, fever, joint pain, and intense itching/burning. I had to take Prednisone for 10 days and, just to add insult to injury, later developed both thrush and a yeast infection.

I'm a 41 yo woman. I was prescribed 300mg to take 3X per day for 10 days for a bad sinus infection. After the 2nd pill, I experienced a very intense nausea like never before. My mouth tasted like a metal pipe. When I went outside, everything appeared bright/white and I thought I saw white flashes in the sky. Also, my kidneys felt like they would explode. I had also started prednisone that same day. Would you think it was a bad combination or did I have a bad reaction to the Clindamycin? I stopped using it and went on Avelox. After 6 days of that stopped it because I could hardly get off of the bed, my leg became numb and I felt like I had a football helmet on. Was that also because I was on afew days of prednisone?

What most people don't read, is that if you are taking Levaquin or any of the quinine based antibiotics you are NOT supposed to ingest caffeine. No tea, no coffee, no chocolate. I was getting major rushes off of it. It was kinda neat :) But not when the heart started racing like crazy. It also contributed to a lot of other icky symptoms. Stopped the caffeine as opposed to the antibiotics and the infection is getting better. Now I just have to kill the caffeine deficiency headache :) Oh, and if you go off caffeine, you're going to sleep like the dead for a couple days.
I have an MRSA (antibiotic resistant staph infection) did a round of Zithro, a round of Cipro and now on a round of Clindamycin. Infection is finally being held at bay from getting worse. Now I have to convince it to die and go away.
What fun

I was given Levaquin for a toxic spider bite. I was given Levaquin & Clindamycin to remove the toxins from my body. I have a wonderful doctor. She would have NEVER given me this drug, had she known about the possible side effects. For over two weeks, every muscle & joint in my entire body has put me through agony everytime that I moved. Please, let's get drugs such as this off the market. When I finally found information on the drug, it stated: During & even after you are taking this medication you run a risk of tearing tendons in your body. The main ones being in your shoulder & your achilles tendons. THE COMPANY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO WARN ALL PHYSICIANS OF THESE SIDE EFFECTS!! Some of us are already in enough pain without adding to it with an antibiotic that is SUPPOSED to help you. WHAT A JOKE!!

I hope that I can get an answer from anyone or doctor
who can tell me that why doctors still use Levaquian on prescription even if Levaquian has such a serious side effect to some patients. Is it the best antibiotic medicine and the most efficient one among those new generation of antibiotic?
I have Sinusitis and Chronic Pharyngitis, I have used Amoxicillin and it didn't work for me.
My ENT doctor let try Levaquian. But I am allergy to Clindamycin and Sulfonamide. In other words, I am very sensitive to medicines. Therefore, I am afraid of taking Levaquian. (I have not tried it yet). But I like to know if I must take it or in other words there is no any other medicine that I can use for my Pharyngitis.

Finally, I have found a site that makes sense of how I am feeling. End of Oct, went to Dr for severe migraine-like headaches, no other cold or sinus symptoms. MRI normal except mild sinus inflammation left maxillary, so prescribed 10days Levaquin 500mg. After the 2nd-3rd day, developed trouble sleeping, legs and arms felt heavy, slight dizziness when walking, discomfort in breast bone and headache worsened with neck ache. Started Prednisone which then helped the stabbing headache. Day 8 my left maxillary sinus started hurting/swollen ,I was feeling sick, and neck really ached. On day ten, my cheek was beet red, hot and swollen, and I had a dentist appointment (my dr said levaquin wasnt effective for MVP, need to take Clindamycin--I took it more than twelve hours after last dose of Levaquin). That same day,the doctor stopped levagquin then prescribed biaxin XL to take later that night (had taken before for MVP dental treatments without problem). I was nervous about all the antibiotics even though they were spaced out more than 12hrs between plus the prednisone--asked the doctor repeatedly and two different pharmacists who all insisted all ok and absolutley necesary for the severe inflammation. The nightmare begins!!! That night I had severe gastric pain and nausea, I felt totally devoid of energy. I called dr-- said biaxin causes severe gastric pain to stop taking it. I couldnt get out of bed the entire day. That night, I developed racing heart--stomach pounding out of chest, severe nausea and headache with neck ache. Went to ER--dehydrated, Xray and blood work normal so sent home with pepcid for the gastritis. I still felt like I was dying! Heart palpatations/pounding out of my chest plus severe nausea and stomach pains, not able to eat, trouble sleeping, "flu-like" feeling constantly with lowgrade fever. That went on the entire week--worse part the sinus infection still needed to be treated so prescribed Avelox(had taken in past for sinus infections) for ten days. Exactly two weeks from 1st ER visit, awaken in middle of night with "stomach" pulsating out of chest HR130+, went back to ER still feeling sick, ache all over, high BP and pulse with mild fever. This time they did abdominal xray, ct-scan and US--all normal (except tons of kidney stones) and so was the blood work--sent home as the mystery gastrtis case told to have upper GI scope ASAP. Endoscope in mid Dec, found only mild/moderate inflammation of eosphagus, yet I couldnt eat anything other than yogurt and soup? I started to feel better Christmas day, and have been making progress back to feeling more human, but not myself. My normal coloring is almost back. I have a few good days which are always followed by few bad days. I have aches and pains everywhere in my body from my shins to my breast--but usually concentated in neck, shoulders, hips. I still have the nausea in am with hot flashes and dry mouth, but are getting less intense. I am 35, perfect health and exercised daily for 2hrs prior to Nov. I cant believe that antibiotics could have such toxic effects and long staying powers. I cant attribute the symptoms I am having strictly to levaquin---but since I still feel the way I did when I started the Levaquin (prior to the prednisone and other antibiotics) I believe that some of the residual sideeffects are from Levaquin. In case, you think I am an uneducated idiot for taking so many meds--I asked several Dr and pharmacist before taking each med, plus I have a Ph.D. in biology.

Prescribed Bactrim for MRSA skin infection on my arm that I picked up at my local gym. Day 1 OK, Day 2 severe headache at the base of my skull. Day 3 continued headache, general nausea, gas. Day 4 I began to develop a low grade fever and dizziness. Almost passed out after walking just a half mile. Still a severe headache, weakness. Day 5 Headache, consistent fever of 103, chills and muscle aches, light hives visible, weakness, unable to sleep. Day 6 early am, couldn't sleep all night, went to the ER with the worst muscle aches and fever I have ever had. Hives now very clear and pronounced all over my torso. I was tested for the flu. Said it was not, but was a viral infection that was attacking my muscles. Muscle breakdown found in both blood and urine samples. ER physician changed medication to Clindamycin HCL. Told to stop Bactrim, but thought what I had was viral, not a reaction to the Bactrim. I continues to feel bad for a couple more days, but hives started to reduce, fever diminished and started to feel halfway human after being off Bactrim for a couple of days. Still not 100%. New med has it's issues too (have to take every 6 hours, can't lay down after taking it) and a nasty taste in mouth and stomach upset, loose stool. After 5 days of new med went back to my doctor. A secondary infection had set up in the Staph area. The fungal infection needed a different med. Now is 4 weeks later, after finishing all meds, still have an infection. Blood cultures taken to see if the infection is the staph or fungal. I have lost 8lb, have no taste buds, loose stool, severe stomach cramps/burning (now taking Activia to put back good bacteria in my stomach...no one told me to do this before!!). If Staph not gone, need IV antibiotic for a month. I am 50 year old female, but note I had taken this in my 30's without any problems. You can develop an allergic reaction to medicines previously OK for you. Beware of Bactrim. It kicked my behind!
