UPDATE: Went to the doctor on November 9th and got the Mirena taken out. He asked why i was wanting it out and i told him all my side effects (severe hair loss, moody all the time, hot flashes, cold flashes,etc..) and he seemed like he didn't want to take it out so i just cut him off and told him to take it out. He doesn't believe my problems are from the Mirena, but i knew different. Got it out on a Monday and the very next day i felt so drained and tired , i see everyone calling it the "down" day. Well Wednesday i felt so much better and actually started bleeding that day and it only lasted heavy that day and Thursday it was light. Just two days of bleeding and nothing since. I have noticed changes i have more energy and i am not as moody as i was, It was like i felt like the devil when i had the mirena in, i was mad all the time at little things, nothing seemed to make me happy. It is so much better now, not back to my old self but so much better. My hair is still falling out but not as much as it was, much much better. I think that taking the Mirena out was the best thing i could have done for myself.

Oh yes I forgot a few things. I also experience extreme hot/cold flashes. My husband yells at me because I am constantly turning the thermostat up and down. Also I am losing my hair, much more than other women I know. I attribute this to my PCOS, which already has a side effect of thinning hair, but I doubt Yaz is helping it any. At this point it's hard to say how many of these side effects are not Yaz related, and it's quite possible that 95% of them aren't. I know I'm young and still maturing, however, these headaches and nausea are not normal (and no I'm not pregnant).

If Yaz works for you, that's fantastic, but for those that are having physical/mental/emotional symptoms that you don't feel are normal, please get yourself checked out. Even if you only go off Yaz for a month to see how your symptoms are affected, please do so. Every birth control pill works differently for every woman, and it might not be for you.

I'm 26. I was on the Nuvaring for about 2.5 years. I didn't really realize much for side effects. I had short, light periods, no cramping. Did gain a few pounds...maybe 10 or so, but never really thought it was because of the ring. Nothing really to complain about except for the complete loss of sex drive. It's been an ongoing issue with my fiance and I for about 1.5 years now. I had no idea why I wasn't interested in sex, and he felt it must have been him.

After a year and a half with no sex drive, and an upcoming wedding we were really concerned with our sex life. We did some research, and after reading all the possible side effects decided to discontinue using the ring.

I took it out at the regular time, had my one week break, and never put it back in. I have been off it now for 14 days. I had a regularly timed period, although it was extremely heavy and lots of cramping. My period finished on Aug. 13th.

It's Aug. 21st today, and yesterday I got my period again. It's extremely heavy, lots of clots, and cramping (which is not normal for me).

I am dizzy, nauseated, very tired, have back pain, feel overly emotional, and have absolutely no appetite at all! I'm having hot & cold flashes, and feeling all around like crap! I was worried that I possibly got pregnant during my period-free week, and was having a miscarriage.

I've done some reading, and I think it's safe to say that its the effects of stopping the Nuvaring. I'm hoping this doesn't last too long!!

On the bright side, after not having the Nuvaring in place for a week, my sex drive is completely back to normal!

I will never use the Nuvaring again, and I wouldn't recommend it!

I was prescribed Levaquin for a sinus infection/ bronchial infection, and it through me through a loop. I couldn't sleep, had crazy dreams, I literally felt this drug moving through my whole body, and the next day I was exhausted even more exhausted than I was from being sick, and am having hot and cold flashes. I am sure this has reduced some of my sinus symptoms, but it is NOT WORTH IT!!! This is a strong medication, and I wouldn't advise anyone take it unless they had no alternatives. This antibiotic should not be prescribed to the average Joe with a Sinus Infection. This is a seriously strong medicine, with severe side affects. I only took it for one day, and threw it in the trash. My doctor called in a different prescription. I am going to use homeopathic remedies from now on. I feel like I have to at least take this alternate antibiotic though since I already started the cycle. I am going to do serious research before I put even one pill in my mouth though

I am 27, married, and have been on birth control continuously for four years (right before we got married). I have been on Loestrin 24 Fe for five months and just stopped three days ago. I thought there was something wrong with me. Our whole marriage I've had sex drive issues, depression, tiredness, feeling sick all the time, and headaches. All of it got even worse on Loestrin 24. In talking with a co-worker and then doing research a few days ago, it occurred to me that my these problems could be a result of the synthetic hormones I've been taking in the form of birth control. Prior to Loestrin 24, I was on Ortho-Tricyclen, Ortho-Tricyclen Lo, and Yaz. I suffer from endometriosis and have problems with severe cramps and bleeding. My Gyn thought Loestrin 24 would help, with fewer inactive pills. Since taking Loestrin, the side effects mentioned above have gotten worse. In addition, I have had cystic breakouts on my chin and neck, horrible vaginal dryness, fluctuations between nausea and ravenous hunger (I've gained 8 lbs. in five months!), chest pain, muscle and joint pain that gets to be almost unbearable, moodiness, anxiety and paranoia issues, and hot and cold flashes. I think Loestrin 24 should be taken off the market. I've only been off of it for three days and already feel a bit better. My husband and I are now researching natural family planning. No more synthetic hormones for me. Keeping your body's estrogen levels so artificially high all the time is bad news. Not to mention it is a leading cause of breast cancer.

Hello All. Please see my posts on Dec. 13 & 18. I had my it removed on Dec. 18th and have never felt better!
I have a regular cycle, no more spotting or terrible, TERRIBLE cramping. The only mood swings I have are when I am PMSing and only for one day (right before I have my period) and this is supposed to happen. Very normal for us women. It is not normal to be moody all of the time, 24-7 (at least for me). My anxiety is fading away, slowly but surely. It had gotten really bad. Heart palpitations, short breaths, cold sweats... and out of nowhere. Since the removal, it may have happened one or two times but its been a while since my last episode and I am so happy for that. This was happening to me almost on a daily basis at one point. No more dizziness (which I went to the dr for), hot flashes or cold flashes. My husband has noticed a significant difference in my attitude. He notices that I am not down his throat the way I used to be when I was upset with him.
No more spotting, no more pain in lower abdomen, which was almost unbearable. No infections. My skin is glowing, though its still a little dry. No change in my low libido, but I have some other personal things going on right now, so... pray for a sistah. here is one of best parts about having this thing removed: no more of that hormonal smell! I won't attract bears or any other wildlife when I go camping. Won't attract sharks at the beach. lol. Traditional deodorant works again, however I just very recently changed to using a natural (potassium alum) deoderant stick and it works better than traditional deorderant without the possible breast cancer (please ladies, look into this). And, I just read another post where someone was having joint pains. It never even occurred to me that this was the reason for my joint pains. HAVE NOT HAD THEM SINCE THE REMOVAL! And I'm telling you guys, my hands would hurt so bad, I would be near tears. I thought it was from doing to much (your know us women do everything... clean house, children, work, cook, etc.), but now I realize it was the IUD! And I am now pissed about that. I've gotten over everything else, but this is a new revelation that is going to take a bit of time for me to forgive!
For alternatives to hormonal BC, check out the Billings Ovulation Method. If done right, it is more reliable than hormonal birth control. Get on amazon.com and get an old used copy for a few bucks and check it out.

I am a 30 year old nurse and know first hand how birth control pills are individual. I was on many before Yasmin. 6 months ago I started Yasmin because it was the new hype in birth control medicine since it reduces length of period, flow of period, and reduces acne.
I don't think the ingredient drospirenone that's included in Yasmin (a potassium sparing drug, and diuretic, another form of the same type is Spironolactone) works for me.
Ever since I had experienced these symptoms:
Anxiety-heart palpitations, suspiciousness, racing thoughts.
Headaches-tension, leading to muscle spasms in neck and shoulders.
Dizziness-Vertigo type spinning sensations
Ear fullness-popping and cracking without losing hearing.
Fatigue-no motivation, especially for an early riser and a person who works 12 hr shifts.
Chest tightness, lump in throat feeling, could be due to increase in stomach acid (HCl).
If anyone else has vertigo, or dizziness, I would love to know!
Thanks,
Good luck with trying a different form of birth control.

I have been on the NuvaRing for 4 months. And I have to say, Ladies beware!! My story is basically this... I had two children during the age of 25 years old, so my midwife wouldn't release me from the hospital unless I had a birth control plan because if I have another child again so soon it will put my health and life at risk (2 c-sections with back to back children is apparently a bad thing no time to recover!).... I had problems with having anger with other forms of hormonal birth control so I was very nervous about taking the pill or trying the depo shot again. So she suggested the NuvaRing and warned me that because it is hormonal that I may have the same problems with this that I had with the others. She told me that it would take being on the NuvaRing for at least 2-3 months before my hormones would regulate and we would know for sure how my body would handle it and I would react to it. These have been my side effects so far:
Explosive Anger: Every other day my husband and I are fighting in which I over react blow everything WAY out of proportion and threatening to leave.... And I have no right to do this because I literally am treated like a princess.
Depression: Generally after feeling the anger I hit an extreme low.
Sleeplessness: Feeling horrible about myself for acting the way I have, small issues bother me that shouldn't and I'll stay up all night thinking about them not being able to sleep, always feeling like my mind is racing.
Loss of Libido: I have sex because he wants to and it's a rarity at that. When before we were having sex 3-4 times a week, now, it's been about once a month.
Unable to reach orgasm: He knows how to get me there, and I know how to get me there and all of a sudden, neither one of us can get me there no matter how hard we've tried.
Vaginal Itching: Mostly external to the point where it's red, swollen, sore to the touch.
More Discharge: (which is probably causing the above problem)
Headaches: Almost daily and completely out of no where.
Chills and freezing: I live in Sunny Arizona in the South West corner where the average coldest temp is around 70 degrees out and I'm constantly freezing when every one around me is completely fine or way too hot.

All of these side effects started with in 1-2 weeks after I started the NuvaRing. I gave it 4 months to see if my body would regulate and change, and some of these issues would go away and they haven't, if anything they are getting worse. So with that said, we're going to good ol' fashioned condoms!! No more NuvaRing for me.

I hope this helps someone else who might be questioning to stay on it or not... I know you guys helped me! Thanks to all these responses!

I've been taking Alesse for up to a month now and all I've been wanting to do is sleep. I sleep through classes all the time and have been falling behind in school. I've fallen asleep before during school which is why I thought it wasn't caused by anything except maybe stress over marks but then I've started getting hot and cold flashes, my face has been breaking out a lot more, and I've been a bit more emotional. Also my family has had a history of breast cancer and I read online that it might affect it. But anyways what I was wandering is how long before it gets better and if anyone has dealt with it affecting the whole breast cancer thing? I asked my doctor but all he said was awhile and I don't know if I can fall behind in school anymore. Any suggestions? Tips? Maybe recommend a new light birth control? Would be very much appreciated please and thank you.

Had my son in May 2006. Had mirena inserted in Nov 2006. Insertion was quite uncomfortable. I have a very high tolerance for pain. I bleed for maybe a week. Stopped having regular periods, which was great. Spotted a minor amount for the first 1.5 yrs. I've had mood swings and depression on and off for the entire time. Lately, within the past 6-9 months, I've had anxiety issues, dizziness (which I went to the dr for), hot flashes, cold flashes and the mood swings are worse. Spotting has increased. Abdominal pain in lower abdomen is almost unbareable. Like many of the women have posted, I am about ready to go the ER from time to time because of the pain. I've had 2 back to back vaginal infections which my dr says can cause cramping associated with the IUD (but she says its not because of the IUD). My skin is dryer and my libido is decreased.

I am having it removed; after 2 years. I don't know what I am going to do for BC but I honestly do not think that the mirena is worth it for me. Not to mention the more serious KNOWN possible side effects like cancer, blood clots, hypertension (which already runs in my family). I don't have these, but I don't want to take the chance of getting them. The mood swings, depression and anxiety alone not only harm me but my family as well. I'm thankful that my husband has put up with it, but frankly, I'm starting to get on my own nerves now!

And, to top it all off, for the past 2 months, at times I have a very hormonal smell. Now, I am the type to shower every day and some days (hot summer days) maybe even twice a day and so I know its completely internal. My freakin' Degree deodorant doesn't work sometimes and the smell seems to be emitting from my pores. Its not a terrible smell or constant. But when I have it, I smell like I'm in heat or something! LOL

Its coming out this week!

My daughter is 15 she has always been healthy. After her 3rd Gardasil shot on 10/14/2008 she began having headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness tingleing in her hands and fingers (this happened in the next few days after the shot), tiredness, chest pain, stomach pain, face rash, eye itchiness and hot/cold flashes. I am really upset that I allowed my daughter to get this shot. The doctor says she doesn't feel this is from the shot but there is no other explanation since she had none of these problems before! As a mother I feel terribly guilty for letting her get the shot. I haven't seen anything about how long people are having these side effects. Do the side effects go away in time?

I have had the SAME EXACT THING!!! The 1st time I had the shots I was at a knee specialist. He stated that it wasn't cortisone but a different med that does the same thing just better for you. Never could pronounce it!!! I started going to my family doctor to get them cause I trust her fully. However I got cortisone shots from her and was okay that evening. Woke up the next day and face was on FIRE, HOT, RED, FLUSHED all the above. BP was 170/102 was ILLLLL to my stomach like in knots and the WORST HEADACHE I have EVER had in my LIFE!!!! I will NEVER EVER do this again its HORRIBLE!!!! I took Benadryl and just knocked my miserable self out. Today is day 3 and I am still red and still major headache!!!!! Your not crazy and your not alone this is from the shots!!!

I just HAVE to add my story here!! I was on Lexapro 20mg for 2yrs. All was pretty well. It somewhat controlled my anxiety & panic attacks (I have GAD) and it helped stabilize my moods (I am Bipolar), BUT I DIDN'T like that it made it to where I couldn't cry when I wanted to but yet cried at inappropriate times! I basically came to a stand-still with the lexapro and it KILLED my sex drive, so bad that my relationship was at risk (well, thats what I think, cuz no man is happy with NO sex!!) So, I SLOWLY came off them over a month, and even though it was very slowly, the WITHDRAWAL from this drug is just a horrible experience that I hope none of you that are taking now, will ever have to go through what I did!! I seriously thought at one point I was going to die!! I was severely sick for one week-- nausea, vomiting, the runs, hot flashes, cold flashes, the shakes, internal tremors, severe migraines, dizziness when I sat up or stood up, and I got bad electrical zap feelings in my hands & brain (which, even one month & 3 weeks later, I am still having!!) But to you all still on them, I also had weight gain on them, head rushes, dizziness, headaches, internal tremors, and I didn't like that it made me generally dumb!!! Since coming off, I still have the "duhhh" moments, getting less & less, thank goodness, now if only these darn "Zaps" would go away. But yeah, the side effects of this & the withdrawals are HORRIBLE!!! I will never take this again!! So much for newer drugs eh!!

I was taking 40mg of geodon twice a day. The doctor is weaning me off.
So, he said to stop taking my evening dose. Well, I did for two nights and couldn't sleep. I was really jumpy, leg spasms, couldn't sleep, hot and cold flashes, trembling, nausea. It was like having the flu really bad. I also had a couple brain zaps. I wish I never would have started geodon. It's awful.

I've been on the same dose of Levoxyl (118 mcg) for 11 years and I have none of the side effects that have been described. My mother and grandmother also have hypothyroidism, but my mom take 110 mg of synthroid, also prescribed by the same doctor that prescribed me. When I was in the 4th grade my thyroids swelled to the size of golfballs, so much so that you could see them when my head was up, and I was extremely tired and had hot and cold flashes- scary for a 10 year old! My doctor recognized it immediately, and put me on Levoxyl. About a year ago, I gained 15lbs for seemingly no reason, but then this summer I lost about 20lbs. The only difference was taking the medicine 1 hr before I ate anything. I saw someone said that after taking the medication she would get hungry, which I also have, but this makes sense, because Levoxyl is in essence trying to up your metabolism and by doing this you are burning more calories and thus become hungry. If you let this hunger pass, about 20 min later you are no longer hungry and feel great! I still get slight hot flashes, but not too noticeable. I would recommend just as other on here have, that the dose that your doctor may give you may not be 'your' number, and to give it time. If you change your dose, give it 3 months, not 5 days like I saw above! If you have to wait 6 months for 2 dose changes isn't that better than hurting your whole life? GOOD LUCK!

I started Yaz about 3 weeks ago and stopped it after only a week. Two days into taking the pill I experienced flu like symptoms which for me typically includes shaky, vomiting, hot/cold flashes, & weakness and lasted for a day. At the time I thought it was the flu until I began experiencing similar feelings after another 4 days and the following day I had a sore stomach, similar to a stomach ache but it wasn't my typical stomach ache (I have irritable bowel problems and have to carefully watch my diet so I know a stomach ache when I get one!). Needless to say I stopped taking it after it was ruining my family reunion and everyone told me to stop. Only two days after stopping it and after only being on it for a week, I got my full blown period again only it was much darker and much heavier than normal, and lasted just as long as my normal period. It threw me all out of wack as I had JUST ended my period when I began taking it only the week before. Now that I have been off of it for a few weeks I have noticed my nipples are extremely sensitive--which they never have been like this before..I am blaming it on the Yaz. Will start new BC pill shortly...Hopefully you all have better luck than I did, I was excited until I got pretty much all the side effects! Haha!

I'm having the same issues with my doctor not believing me that its the Gardasil. I am a very healthy person, but a few days after receiving the shot I started with these symptoms:
- severe nausea
- severe dizziness
- hot and cold flashes
- stomach problems
- feel faint & weak

I went to my doctor and she said I was having panic attacks! Why would I still feel sick for days at a time if it was panic attacks. I'm still feeling sick now and its been just over two weeks since I got the 1st shot. Does anyone know how long it stays in the body?

I took this medication as a malarial prevention whilst traveling through India.
Never EVER again. My boyfriend had suffered from depression in the past and we had heard bad things about Larium in relation to anxiety and insomnia so we specifically asked our doctor for the malarial tablets with the least amount of side effects associated with that kind of stuff. He reassured us that there was no record of Doxcycline ever having caused those sorts of effects.
So off we went- we followed the instructions exactly and began our trip.
A week or so into India I began to notice shortness of breath and stomach pain- I put it down to typical India travelers upset and thought no more about it. A bit later I began to suffer moments of anxiety that were really out of character ( I've never suffered from anxiety or depression). I'm very well traveled ( I work in the travel industry and have traveled extensively in the Americas, Africa, Australasia and se Asia) and so although this was my first trip to India- i knew my anxiety had nothing to do with India itself. ( people kept telling me this but I loved India)
It came to a head on a overnight bus from Goa to Hampi- I was feeling really anxious, sweating and clammy, I couldn't sleep and my breathing was really tight. Eventually I had a full blown panic attack that was almost like a out of body experience- I couldn't see and I couldn't breath. The whole bus had to stop ( embarrassing!) at 3am in the morning. Eventually I managed to get back on and make it to the next town ( although not as far as Hampi) so we could take stock.
I was petrified and had no idea whatsoever what was going on. It never occurred to me it could be the malaria tablets as we had been so clear and our doctor so confident they didn't have these kinds of side effects.
I was worried about being on buses, trains even planes again since I didn't know what caused the attacks and I was terrified another one would happen. I had no valium or any other sort of thing that might have helped. In the end we had to cut our trip short and make it back to Mumbai - In Mumbai I suffered from another two panic attacks- one where I could see the walls closing in in our cheap hotel room. Shortness of breath, tightness all through my body, hysteria, blurry vision - it was awful! And also this ongoing pain and upset in my stomach.
I ended up cutting short a RTW trip that my boyfriend and I had been saving for for over a year and coming home to Australia 2 months early.
It was devastating and I still had no idea what was causing it. Finally a friend said her doctor had mentioned sleeplessness and anxiety as a rare side effect of this drug when she was taking it for some problems to do with vaginal bleeding and spotting. I started searching on the internet and was amazed to find loads of sights with people experiencing heaps of the side effects that I'd been told were never a problem with this drug!
Obviously Malaria is really serious but if I had been properly informed I could have made the decision to come off the drugs and look at alternate medication. For now - Im taking the risk of no malaria tablets at all for my next couple of trips (to Borneo- so not a major risk anyway) and will actually research much harder before taking anything again!

I'm 16 and i started taking Accutane about two months ago. i was on the medication for three weeks and had to get off it. The first week i feel like my body was being bond into a rubber band ball and then being bounced around it killed but i figured it fade but then i was having suicidal and violent thoughts, i was short of breathe, crying daily, fighting with everyone, throwing emotional fits, blacking out, dizziness, headaches, hot and cold flashes, back pain, i was isolating myself, and blaming my self for everything. I also had the minor side effects of chapped lips, bloody noses, dry skin, and muscle cramps. Luckily my boyfriend noticed and told me to get off it.

hi, Finished a 6 day pack of Prednisone and am so very tired. I feel a bit sick and have hot/cold flashes. More than the normal for my age. I do not feel energetic. I don't know if it is the winter and gray sky doing it to me, but I don't think so. I feel so blah. Could this be from the Prednisone?
Thank you in advance for your help.
