I was on Singulair for approx 3 years with zero side effects other than actually being healthy for the first time in my life - no chronic acute bronchitis episodes, no calling in sick to work. Then I switched jobs and HMOs - they immediately took me off of my Singulair and Combivent and put me on Qvar and Proair. Quess what? I began wheezing and sniffling. So they prescribed Claritin and Nasarel on top of the other two. Still not working. So now after a bout with antibiotics and steroids they have prescribed Flonase and over the counter Zyrtec. I have BEGGED to go back on Singulair repeatedly. I have offered to pay the $120/month out of pocket. Now I really am depressed and angry all the time - as well as having intense headaches, tremors, chest pain, insomnia, jitteryness then fatigue then jitteryness again = all because I can't get the stupid Singulair.

I am a 35 year old women, with severe asthma. I have had asthma since I was four years old. I have been through numerous meds. Currently I am taking Singulair, Combivent, Advair diskus and thte 7 day Predinsone. In July 2007 i had a severe asthma attach where i almost lost my life. In the past I'd rarely take the Advair, but since that last time in the hospital i have been religiously taking it. Right now i have a severe chest cold and i am taking theraflu and vicks cold meds and i am noticing strange things. Irregular heartbeat, feeling bloated, some anxiety and my weight gain. By reading the other posts and this whole site, i know believe i should ween myself of this Advair again. It is too much to worry about ...

Ive only been on Advair for almost a month. I couldn't believe how quickly my asthma disappeared. I was using my inhaler daily and tried other things but nothing helped. I went to a pulmonary specialist and prescribed Advair for a month. I'm so glad i have to go back and see him this Saturday b/c I want to tell him I will no longer take this. I'm 26 years old and had developed asthma when I was 7 years old. It went away when I was 14 and just came back full force 3 years ago. I would have tried anything to be able to breathe normally again.
I've had the hoarseness in my voice and a bad cough where I'm spitting up mucus everyday since I've been on Advair. I figured if this was what I had to live with to have the chance to live a normal life asthma free that id take it, it wasn't so bad. But this past week I've had blinding headaches non-stop. Ive been nauseous, sweating, coughing, I've been sore like I just finished a long workout, chest pains, tightness in my chest and my legs have felt so weak. This morning I woke up with the worst cold too; which I know Advair weakens your immune system but this is crazy. I stopped taking Advair this morning & I'm going to tell my doctor I need to try something else.

My GP put me on Advair in the summer of 2006 because I was having trouble with so much phlegm in my throat and losing my voice by using Combivent. I also have a weakened voice as a result of asthma medication. For the first three weeks the Advair was great. Then one weekend at our cabin, I had a severe asthma attack -- to the point that my husband wanted to pack up and drive an hour to an hospital emergency ward. I thought it was from something in the cabin or in the air. As a result of some research on Advair, I truly believe that it was from taking this medication. Not realizing this, I have continued to take Advair at the advice of my GP. I then noticed that my skin was very itchy, mostly on my legs at that time. My GP said it was excema. It started spreading to my hands, wrists, elbows. I started reading about the side effects of Advair -- from the insert that comes with the discus -- itchy skin is one of the side effects listed. In December 2006, I went to the lung specialist that has been treating me for asthma for several years. I asked him about the itching and mess on my wrists, etc. He indicated that it was excema and not a reaction to the Advair -- and proceeded to write me a presription for more Advair. In January 2007, I went back to my GP because I couldn't stand the itching and red blotches anymore. She wouldn't give me anything to relieve it, but sent me to an allergist. I asked him about the mess my skin was in and he told me that it was very rare that someone would react to Advair in this manner and he didn't think that was the cause. He decided that I was allergic to dog and cat dander. Just the other day I was finally sent to a dermatologist. She was appalled at the condition of my skin, as the ithing and redness had now started to spread to my upper arms, under arms, breasts and stomach area. I took some research about Advair with me to this appointment. She has now taken me off the Advair for a two week trial and given me an ointment help with the healing. Finally, a specialist that really might think the Advair is the cause of this itching all over my body. I sure hope that these doctors will realize that I really have an adverse reaction to Advair and will find another medicaiton that will be suitable, but not cause the problems I am having now. my voice is still strained, but I am sure as the Advair leaves my system, this will improve too.

i am 39, female and had been using combivent for years. i felt it was not working, and dr put me on advair. i was AMAZED at how well it worked. i could run w/ my dogs, swim the length of the pool with one deep breath. i began having problems with the glands in my neck. we finally figured out i had a huge yeast infection in them from the advair. the dr had me back off and use only once a day till the infection was gone. i began using it twice a day and i have been suffering from i thought was back pain. i've been going the chiropractor over and over and nothing he had done had helped. last night the pain was the worst it has been, and my lungs started to burn. the burning went around from my back, around to the front and i could not figure out what was going on. this morning i decided to not use advair, and i have NO pain! of course, i'm using my resuce inhaler alot, and getting a breath isn't always easy, but i don't really care. i am not taking it again. AND, i can't eat meat now either. my husband fried chicken tonight, and he looked at me like i was crazy when i said i just couldn't eat it.

Taking this for possible COPD. Took the first pill (500 mg.) at approximately 5 p.m. plus 2 doses of Combivent and am on 2 litres of oxygen constantly for a week. At approximately 12 a.m. extreme coughing occured and then I felt as if someone were standing on my chest. I felt like I couldn't breathe even though I was breathing---very scary.

Within four days of taking Singulair I started to have vivid dreams, anxiety, shakiness and weakness in the morning, and a feeling of "medicine head". It initially helped my asthma/breathing but after three days was using Combivent on the same schedule as before. My mouth got so dry at day three I woke up in the middle of the night and thought I was going to have to pry my lips open with a fork! I have since stopped taking it as feeling nauseous and shaky all the time is not for me......

What to do about ADVAIR.....

I was introduced to Advair 8/02 and like the posts here I have experienced most of all the side effects.Complained to my Pulmonary Doctor and was told that there are no known side effects....Ha

Last Oct (04) I weaned myself off Advair 250/50 and felt terrific-for about 2 months and then I became very weak and stepped up on my Combivent puffs.Had to use 02 24/7 instead of only at night and excertion.Come April when I saw the doctor he said lucky I saw him that day as next week I would have seen him in the hospital. I did agree with him so I went back on Advair. I only take it in the morning.I don't feel I have any nightime problems,so for me one dose is ok. It does help but I would prefer to be on a drug that has no steroid in it..Betwixed & Between..

This past November I got the flu, as did my husband and daugther. The day after Thanksgiving I started to have some difficulty breathing. I went to the doctor and they prescribed an inhaler for me, which did nothing. I went back to the dr. again and she prescribed an anxiety medication and combivent and told me that it was just anxiety. Why would she prescribed combivent (which is strictly used for COPD) if I supposedly just had anxiety? I went to another doctor and he informed me that I had pneumonia and broken ribs. He prescribed prednisone and Advair. Since taking Advair the quality of my life has gone downhill tremendously. I have gained upwards of 30 pounds, have a swollen (and painful) stomach, have lost my voice (I cannot speak above a whisper), I'm having excruciating pain in my right hip joint, it hurts if I put any weight on the heels of my feel, and my back is killing me. Advair has not helped me in ANY way. It has not helped my breathing, in fact, it's made it worse.

When I informed my doctor of this he acted like I was crazy. He said it was completely safe and that I had nothing to worry about. So, I went to a pulmonologist...and he told me to stay on the Advair also! Even though they're aware of the fact that it hasn't helped me! I found it ironic that someone stated on here that they thought the dr.'s might be getting a kickback for prescribing it, because I thought the exact same thing!

I have been off of Advair for 4 days now and there has been no improvment. I called the company that makes Advair and the woman I spoke with said she was "in shock" that the dr.'s kept me on that medication with the side effects I'm having. According to her, 5% of people using Advair will experience "hoarsness," which is a grand understatement...it's more like loss of voice. She said she was filing a report with the FDA and we would receive a copy of it. When I asked her if this could have caused permanent damage, she was honest with me. According to her there is now a study for people who have been on Advair for 2 years, then off of it for a year, and they still have their symptoms. She also said that the study stated that there was no difference between long-term use and short-term use. Which basically means that it doesn't matter if you've been on it for 2 months or 2 years, if you're going to have a reaction...you'll have it.

I'm praying this isn't permanent. I'm only 37 and this is miserable to have to deal with while running my business and taking care of my family.

I am so glad I found this site. I thought I was going crazy! I've been taking Advair off and on for two years, and prior to that, have taken Flovent and Serevent for three or four years. Every time I report side effects to my allergist, he is surprised and tells me that he doesn't hear about any negative effects from others, implying that I am the only one. I have reported extreme weight gain to him (40 pounds). The weight gain started with Flovent use, but it has ballooned out of control, and that's with diet restrictions and healthy eating over the years. In addition, there are the following symptoms: dental pain (increase in cavities as well), mushy gums and sensitivity; shortness of breath and a heavy, tight feeling in my lungs; severe joint pain and swelling in calves, arms, especially at the knees and arms; stiffness (after a half hour of driving, can hardly get out of the car); extreme incontinence; extreme gas and bloating; abdominal swelling (very pronounced); changes in the skin (many small blood blisters all over plus brown splotches on the face); hair growth on the face; increase in perspiration; dry eyes; itchy scalp and skin (crawling sensation); constant foot pain and athlete's foot ( I never had that before!); depression and extreme fatigue; muddy thinking and memory loss (short and long term); mood swings; cessation of menstrual cycle. I am not one to complain, so I keep quiet about it, but now, it's out of hand. I stopped for awhile, knowing that it had to be the medication, but then my doctor noticed decreased lung function, and urged me to go back on it. I tried Singulair, with combivent, with mixed results, but not as effective in stopping the wheezing as Advair. I would like to try Pullmacort, if it will make a difference. I can't stand all the side effects.

I have used Advair two years 50/250 dosage. In the last week I broke out with splotches and bumps over most of my body after inhaling my dosage. I stoped taking it but still having minor outbreaks after waking up in the mornings. Since quiting usage the pain in the joints of my fingers has stopped. My breathing is still ok. I have COPD and the Advair seemed to help me take deep breathing and I was able to stop using combivent. I have slight memory problems but use notes to keep myself reminded of items for the day. I'm one month from turning sixty. RGB
