I've had mirena for about 6 months now. I had it put in due to very heavy periods, and i must say for that reason the mirena is GREAT. My sister has had the mirena for 2 1/2 years now and a few times she had cramps/severe pain so bad she couldn't even get to a phone, one time she actually fainted. Well i experienced my first "cramp attack" (as we call it) and it was bad, but my second experience was last night, and it was crazy. It hurt so bad i fell to floor in pain. It felt like a constant contraction that wouldn't go away for about 20 mins. My sister has been to the doctor several times for it and the scary part is they don't know what it is. We know its from the mirena though because we both have it. Has anyone else experienced this?

I am so glad that I found this site. I had my Mirena put in February 2009 when my son was 10 months old. I wan't even looking for options for birth control. My doctor kept pushing it on me every appointment we had. I knew 2 people that had it and they loved it so I thought why not. The day I had it inserted I had major major cramps. But the doctor said I would experience cramping. Well the next day the cramps were so bad I was doubled over in pain. They felt just like contractions from active labor. After about a week they went away.
Then came the rest. Heart palpitations. Tossing and turning at night. Night sweats. My contraction cramps came more and more frequently. I started getting pimples and I never get pimples. Joint pain especially in my left shoulder. Mood swings like I've never had before. I don't even want to be around my son who is now 16 months old. Most days I feel like both him and my husband would be better off without me.
I went to my doctor in June and she told me they're was no way it could be from the Mirena. I then called the Mirena clinic. They told me the same thing and said not only would I have to go through my family doctor for a referral to have it removed, I would then have to wait 3 months for my appointment. Needless to say I felt backed into a corner.
I made another appointment with my doctor planning on telling her we were going to try and have another baby and hopefully we would get a better response.
Well in walked in a new doctor saying my old family doctor no longer works there! So I told the new doctor about my symptoms. She took out a pen and pad of paper and started writing everything down. She told me that it's rare for it to happen but few people have serious side effects. I felt like giving her this website.lol
Anyway, 4 days later I have an appointment on Oct 6th the have it removed!!! I am so happy. I will post an update.

I had a Mirena put in originally to avoid surg for excessive bleeding. That was almost 6 yrs ago. It was wonderful and during the first 5 yrs, I had only one period! The insertion was terrible and the pain was like a very hard contraction. I passed out when it was put in. When it was time to take it out, the MD couldn't get to my cervix (very high and tilted) so I had it surgically removed and another put in Sept 2008. This time has been very different. I have bled every 10 days or so for about a week. I have had PMS like I used to have before any Mirena. Now I have been bleeding for a total of 20 days and the MD just took out the Mirena and did a biopsy. We will see what happens now, when will I stop bleeding? I am gonna enter the World Records ....btw...lots of chin hairs over the past 6 yrs, pluck daily so maybe that too will stop.

I had my Mirena inserted in January, 2 months later i stopped bleeding, i have spent several days waking up with the same type of nausea i had when i was Pregnanat. 10 days later i experienced excruciating pain in my left side of my abdoment that is so intense it makes me double up, it feels as if something goes pop before the pain relapses this happens every 3 weeks, i have a dark discharge every 3 weeks that lasts for 8-10 days, i have lost my sex drive altogether, my tollerance level is less and frustration comes easy. Over the last week i have experienced contraction like pains that last about 20 minutes. I went to my local gp's to get it checked 8 weeks after insertion, i was told my Gp isn't qualified to do this i would need to go to the sexual health clinic and see the nurse there....

I had my mirena put in on 2/24/06. I still have it. It has been over 3 years. I have experienced a lot of the above symptoms. I had Mirena placed 10 months after my 3rd son was born. he is medically fragile with a lot of special needs. I was depressed and angry, so I went on Zoloft. I figured it was the stress from trying to keep my son alive. I have NEVER bled- not even when they put it in. I have not had a single period. I have had contraction like cramping a lot- off and on. Sometimes it even seems painful to urinate. I just ignored these symptoms. I too have NOOOOO sex drive.. which I of course have blamed on the Zoloft. I have not slept more than 2 consecutive hours in over 3 years.. again- I blamed this on worrying about my son. I have not gained weight- but no matter how much I diet or exercise, I cannot lose and ounce. I have always been that person that women love to hate- eat what I want and never grow out of a size 4. I blamed this lack of weight lose on age.. I blamed my fatigue on my insomnia. I have answers for all of these symptoms.. but I never once put them all on Mirena. I think I will get this taken out to see if my spirits, sex life and sleep ability change.

I had my Mirena IUD inserted two weeks ago today. I had it inserted on day three of my normally five-day period. My period stopped for 2 days following insertion and then I spotted for one day. After that one day, I have been bleeding heavily ever since, and I'm talking super jumbo tampon every 2-3 hours bleeding. Before receiving Mirena, I talked to my GYN, read the pamphlet and researched online. Each resource told me to expect spotting - so I expected spotting for 3-4 weeks after and I am completely blown away by the constant heavy bleeding that I am now being told could potentially last 3-4 months.

I normally do not use oral contraceptives because of my problems with High Blood Pressure, but my doctor felt the low dosage of hormones in Mirena was "ok" for me. Since insertion, I've experienced a slight raise in my blood pressure but the doctor doesn't seem too concerned about it because I am supposedly "adjusting" to the Mirena. I am slightly worried that my constant bleeding and increased blood pressure are not going to subside in the 3-4 months the doctor is recommending I wait it out.

Not to mention how the constant, constant bleeding is ruining my sex life.

I honestly have no idea what kind of standards or limits I need to be setting here for myself. It has only been two weeks, but how much is too much..? I also have to say I am worried as well since I have to have minor surger in 4 weeks and would hate to have HBP/Anemia complications because of this.

Thank goodness for this site. I had my Mirena removed on Feb.16th 2009 after reading everyone's posts. I first had it inserted in April 2008 because progestrin pills were making me gain tons of water weight which was leaking around my heart and I still had painful heavy clot field cycles. I have SLE lupus so I can't have estrogen. Mirena insertion was horrible. I was in severe pain for 2 weeks. There after I had contraction like pain daily(or at least that's the best way to describe it seeing how I've never had a child), developed multiple cysts that kept bursting between cycles, gained 25 lbs., have bad acne seeing how I used to be called baby face because I never had acne before, severe depression and mood swings, and the 'fuzzy' 'out of it' feeling several women have described on this site. When I told my GYN about what I was experiencing she made me think I was crazy saying the Mirena wasn't causing my problems. Granted my cycles got lighter but never stopped. So I had a laparoscopy done to see what might be causing me to be constantly in severe pain. It showed nothing. So then my GYN was really making me feel crazy seeing how the laparoscopy showed nothing and the doc kept saying it wasn't the Mirena. So Jan. 2009 I stumbled across this site looking for reasons I would have 2 excruciating and heavy cycles 3 days apart from each other while on the Mirena. Well I got my answer. The Mirena was screwing' me up and ruining my life. Turns out I'm not crazy and now am free from the grasp of that evil pharmaceutical plot to ruin women's lives while making big bucks. I was just about to start taking antidepressants before I had the Mirena removed now I'm holding off cause this constant aggressive and angry mode I was in has disappeared since having the thing removed. And I no longer cry for no reason. I just came off of a heavy cycle reminiscent of how it was before Mirena. I also experienced a 'crash' yesterday and I was very moody. But that's expected with the damage this thing has obviously done to my body. I'm trying really hard to lose the weight I gained by May 1st, or at least most of the weight. Was 170 lbs before Mirena because of the steroid Prednisone I'm taking for my Lupus and I'm 195 lbs right now. I'm going to Florida in May so I want to feel good about myself and maybe consider getting in a pool. Anyways, I will let everyone know how my Mirena rebound is coming along in the next few weeks. If anybody gets wind of a class action suit against Bayer pharmaceuticals please let me know. I'd love to get these jokers for ruining my life!

To monkeygril, i had to rush myself to the hospital on Sunday because the pain was that intense, they couldn't find the threads then they had a look and took swabs, i went for a scan on Tuesday and they said the coil had moved down my womb, i suppose all the contraction pains i have been having means my body is trying to push it out, im going to get it out on tues because i cant take anymore of this pain, and i have really heavy clotted bleeding as well which isn't very nice, ill keep you updated on how i get on,

Cheers for now x

Hello I am 28 and I had the mirena put in Sep 2006 after my daughter was born and I didn't think that I had any problems with it until yesterday. In the last 3 weeks I have burts 2 cysts (not unusual for me) but after the second one I had a constant sharp pain in my lower pelvic area (where my overies are) it was comparable to a contraction. My Gyn did a pelvic exam and she didn't feel anything, I went home still in pain, the next day the pain was so bad I went to ER, there they did a pelvic exam took cultures, took a urine sample, and did an ultrasound. everything came back neg. I went back to the GYN and they decided I have an infection she didn't say much about it she just Rx 2 diff types of antibiotics. After I take them if the infection doesn't go away then she'll take out the IUD. Has anyone else had this problem and knows what about the type of infection and how severe it is.

Hi, Ive had the Mirena for 2 weeks now and it has been TERRIBLE, I have had terrible sharp pains off and on... I have never had kids but is a contraction like the pain that I am feeling? My doctor suggested that I have it put it since I felt sick with the pill and specially if I am not ready to have a baby yet. I've been married six months now.... I don't know if this will go away and I don't know what to do, the only thing good about this is that my sex drive is much better, lol... but this is terrible what should I do? Should I have it taken out and will it hurt?

Remember... Every body is different! I had my mirena removed today after 4 months and my doctor did NOT feel my issues (mostly mood swings, dizzy spells, confusion, fatigue) were consequential, and that I gave it a fair shot. She said the hormones would be gone within a couple weeks, and I should feel better soon-THANK GOD! It's not for everyone, and the mom of four children relating these issues to post baby or age is lucky to not have to deal with these side effects. I was not happy to have to give up this convenience for sure! The Copper T may be an option for some of us, if you can trust an IUD, but I'm sticking with the tried and true. If you feel as though it's not for you, get it removed - life's too short to feel yucky!

Wow!!! I just received my IUD 2 days ago and this website has me terrified of the problems to come. I am grateful of such a site so i will at least know what I may experience, others have experienced as well.I do have to admit the cramping, dizziness and vomiting shortly after the insertion of the Mirena almost had me to the point of having it taken out immediately!!! However the pain became a lot more tolerable after a couple of hours. I do have to say I am however experiencing an abnormal discharge, there is no odor or color but it is heavier then any discharge ive ever had. I have also noticed that after the cramping was little to none after taking a warm bath everything came back but not as a constant pain but almost comparable to a come and go labor contraction. I have called my doc and as with a lot of your doctor he said everything im experiencing is normal.I guess only time will tell

I have had my Mirena for 2 months now. I have not had any children, so my cervix had to be dilated for insertion. That was hell!!! . Thankfully, the procedure was very quick. I had horrible cramping all day. I have had a lot of cramping in the past two months, and an occasional sharp pain in my abdomen. Other than a little spotting the day after the procedure, I have had no bleeding at all for two months. About a month after I got Mirena, I had a day or two of torturous cramps - more like contractions at times. It's been about another month, and I am having these contraction-like cramps again. I'm hoping they'll pass in another day or so because they are debilitating. My doctor told me to give it three months for my body to get used to it, so I hope everything will be okay. I want to like Mirena, because I know I'm unable to remember to take a pill everyday. My friend has one and loves it. She says she can barely remember what those days of uncomfort are like. I have an appointment next week to trim the strings. Sex has been uncomfortable sometimes, causing me to cramp up. And my boyfriend got "poked" the other day - it kinda killed the mood. I hope my body gets used to Mirena, and I wish you all luck with yours!

I am 30 years old and have never had any children. I had my Mirena inserted on on 7/18 (during my cycle). I know it has only been a week but I'm feeling a little concerned and confused.

While having it inserted I was SHOCKED by how painful it was. I, like many other stories I've read, felt like I was going to faint.

Sunday I woke up in at 5:30 a.m. in so much pain! It literally hurt so bad that it woke me up. The same thing happened Tuesday. Night time has been a struggle also. I resorted to taking Tylenol PM to knock myself out.

I asked my doctor to test me for all STD's to ensure that I would not have a PID, but I'm still apprehensive. I realize I need to give it time... but gosh it sucks being a girl! I'm glad I haven't had any emotional side effects and hope that I never do!

I just don't know what to say. I had the Mirena inserted in May 2007. INSERTION WAS VERY PAINFUL......almost like having a contraction. My doctor had a hard time inserting it and almost gave up.....so did I. After insertion, i had a period the next week that lasted for 14 days. I went back for them to check it and he could not find the strings. Finally after about 20 minutes of searching he found it. My periods have gone from regular pre-mirena to 8 days on post mirena and in April 2008, I had 2 periods. I thought this was suppose to slow down or stop periods. I have gained 20 pounds in a year, started having migraines again, feel and look like I am 6 months pregnant, am very testy and irritable, cry at the drop of a hat, spot after intercourse, and have palpitations. Now I read that the Mirena can cause thyroid problems. I have kidney disease and do not need anything to deal with. I thought I was going CRAZY until I started reading posts on the internet. I wish I had known all this before I got it. I have an appt. to have mine removed June 28. That is the soonest I could get....If I could take it out myself, I would. Has anybody else experienced palpitations?

I have had my Mirena IUD in for 5 years now, and am having it removed tomorrow - yay!!! The only thing I'm NOT looking forward to is the contraction to have it removed (my Doctor reminded me to take a pain killer 1 hour before removal!). Whilst I have had a relatively good time on the Mirenda IUD and didn't have a single period once it was inserted - compared to a friend who also had hers in for 5 years and still had monthly light periods - I am beginning to put 2 + 2 together and have seen the reason for some of my "medical" problems as being linked to the Mirena!

I have had a decreasing sex drive for the past 5 years - which my husband says is "psychological" and I should be able to "think" myself into wanting sex!!! (I've told him that us women don't think about sex every minute like men do and it is impossible for me to feel like making love in the build up to actually doing it!!) I have also experienced weight gain - I am the heaviest I have ever been and my diet hasn't changed much from before I had the Mirena put in!

I think it may work for some people, and I am glad I have tried it; but I certainly don't intend to get another Mirena after I have this one removed!

Has anyone had a High White Blood count due to the Mirena? I was given the Mirena to help with the Progesterone because I'm so young and I didn't want to have a hysterectomy. I haven't had children and want to try even though I've been told it's not possible. I have a 1% chance which is why I want to give it a try, but I'm almost 34 years old, so I only have a little time since I'm already in Pre-Menapause. I have had horrible headaches and also bloating, but I thought it was from my GI problem I've been dealing with for over a year now. I had the Mirena insert on February 11th, but my White Blood Count has skyrocketed to the point they want me to go on to a Hematologist. I was on Seasonable and I almost had a heart attack because my blood pressure went up to high because of the side effects. Just be careful. Now reading this website has me suspicious, so now it maybe hysterectomy time. This was my last chance to try something.

I had MIRENA inserted after my son was born almost two years ago. I was so excited to not have to deal with taking a pill or having to worry about anything at all. Well, after a year, finally my period got under control and i only have gross looking spotting for a few days every month. But, I think that it is causing some serious problems. My fiance and I had sex yesterday and the pain that came to me afterwards was absolutely unbearable. I was curled up in a ball screaming and we considered taking me to the hospital...my problem is I no longer have health insurance. The pain I felt was like a terrible gas pain and felt like there was a knife that was tearing into my cervix. I can't seem to lose any weight, and I feel like shit EVERY day. Has anyone had that knife stabbing pain I am talking about? I just want to make sure I'm not the only one. We are paying out of pocket to have this removed as soon as possible.

I have been on Levaquin for 5 days and have had an ache and tightness in the back of my neck since the first day. I have slept very poorly for the last three nights and over the last two days have developed significant chest pain..feels like the muscles in my chest and upper abdomen are in a constant contraction. I went to my internist yesterday thinking it may be an unfamiliar type of asthma attack. I used my inhaler on the way and blood oxygen was fine when I got there but the chest pain continued. I was given a chest Xray and an EKG, both of which were fine. My doctor did not feel that it could be the Levaquin and advised me to continue it. The contractions in my chest have continued, almost crushing at times. The neck pain has been continuous. I am stopping the Levaquin and willing to risk having the infection return.

I had the Mirena IUD inserted on October 10th. I had it switched from the copper IUD because I was spotting dark brown blood prior to my period, so my gyno recommended the switch. I spotted for the rest of the day, then stopped for two days, then began what I would call my period, since I was due for it later that week anyway. I am still bleeding, but I'd like to believe I'm nearing the end, since it seems to be lightening up. I expected my period to be fairly long after insertion.

The day after insertion, I experienced severe itching and swelling down there, and decided that I must have a yeast infection, but both symptoms are listed as side effects on the sheet I got from my pharmacy. I treated the infection, but still itch from time to time... I'm wondering if it's the hormones in the IUD.

On the weekend of October 19th, I lost my appetite, my sex drive, all sense of sexual pleasure and my ability to acheive orgasm. I ate three meals all weekend long, and only because I felt that I should eat, not because I was hungry. Sexually, I felt friction and not much else. Upon trying to climax 4 seperate times over the course of the weekend, I failed at all 4 attempts and all I got from my efforts was sore muscles, frustration and tears from being so upset by it. I have never experienced problems with sex or climaxing in the 14 years I've been with my husband. However, a couple of days before insertion, we had had sex and it was fabulous, as always. I climax every time we have sex, so it's been very upsetting.

I weighed myself today, just out of curiosity, and since the insertion, I've lost 7 lbs. I'm not dieting, not exercising, not even trying to lose any weight.

Upon calling my gyno and discussing my symptoms with her assistant, I was told that it couldn't be the Mirena, because the amount of hormones in it are so minute that they wouldn't affect anything outside of the uterus. I was told that something else in my life must be causing my sexual problems. !!! I don't think so! The IUD is the only thing that has changed in the past 2 weeks! And how do you explain a sudden loss of 7 lbs??? She didn't want to say it straight out, but she was trying to tell me it was all in my head.

I've had sex again since my failed attempts, and it's getting better, as is my appetite, so I'm hoping that my body is simply adjusting to the new IUD and getting used to the hormones. I have not been on any medication or hormones in the past two years, as I've been pregnant and then breastfeeding, so it might be quite a shock to my system.

If my inability to acheive climax continues, I am going ot have the IUD removed and have another copper IUD put in. My sex life isn't worth this.

I had my mirena put in almost 7 months ago. I had my first child 1 year ago and chose to use Mirena because I'm terrible at remembering to take the pill. The procedure didn't take very long but I thought it was painful during the insertion it felt like a contraction during labor. I cramped and had lower back pain for the 1st week. I swore to my husband I was going to have it taken out because for the first 3 months if I wasn't having a period I was constantly spotting. I was convinced the reason mirena prevented pregnancy was that you weren't interested in intercourse with all that going on down there. It has stopped finally. I do have a period every month it is slightly lighter then what it normally was, which was pretty heavy, but some periods are worse then others as far as cramping goes. Intercourse is not painful. I have noticed I've been just a little more emotional and it varies depending on what time of the month it is. I'm okay with mirena so far. So I'm going to decide to keep it for now. But it does sit in the back of mind that if at some point I suspect Mirena is causing any kind of harm to my well being I will not hesitate to have it removed.
